Regualtor wiring issues

I have (i believe) a 55amp bosch alternator and a RE57 bosch regulator and am having charging issues.

If i have the wiring one way, it seems to last a little bit then suddenly drop from 12volts down to 8 volts in about 25min or so, and then my spark is no good so the engine just stalls.

If i have it wired another way it over charges. My dash gauge says 18volts when im driving alone and 14volts when idling.

When i check the battery terminal on the alternator at idle it reads 16-16.5volts.

Any ideas guys? Very frustrating issue.

The terminals i have to play with are:

Alernator: D+, D-, DF
REgulator: D+, D-, DF

i think your regulator is playing up as it gets a bit worm it starts to faulter not uncoman what ti do is borrow new on and go from there
dont do the switch a bout to 18 volts it can and most likely goes up to 30 volts i know blew thw liven shit out of the coil and fryed the condensor and points
