Hi, just wanting to know if a 1500 motor from a 69 beetle will fit a 58 beetle gearbox? Will it bolt straight up, or no go?

cheers,

Damien.

it will bolt up

but the 12volt flywheel will be 200mm
and your gearbox was made for a 6 volt 180mm clutch and flywheel..

A fellow in the USA told Me all he does is bolt the engine with 200mm clutch and flywheel
and tuns the engine over with the starter motor
[spark plugs out]
until the teeth on the ring gear cuts out enough room
for it to turn over.. it doesn't have to take off much of the metal...
or You can line it up and grind a bit of metal off where the flywheel touches...

I saw an engine the other day that had grinder marks in the metal in the bellhousing where someone had ground it away for the larger clutch flywheel etc..

other than that it bolts straight ON...

sumthing like that, but grab an adapter bush for a 12 volt starter/6v box...........and go to a 12v starter too

Thanks.... I will use my die grinder for the clearance. Is it all the way around, or just the bottom of the bellhousing?

The adapter bush goes on the end of the starter??

in here Damo..........

use the "new" engine to mark it by turning it by hand, then tightening the bolts a little, then turn again ETC........

then clearence with the die grinder....................wash all the dirt and grease out well tho, chance of fire there with mag shavings🙅

starter bush pushes into gearbox case, yes on the end of the starter

don't forget different pressure plate/thrust bearing models too

You'll also need to modify your tinware if your fitting it into a 36hp engine bay (well i think you will, i had to). Just the front bit that sits near the pulley (haven't done mine yet)
