Chrome Trim in window rubbers.

I have removed some chrome trim that is damaged as I have some good spares. Can you put the trim back in whilst the window is still fitted or do I have to remove the whole window/rubber and then do it? Im referring to side windows but guess it wouldnt matter which window Im referring to.
