Is fuel injection worth the effort?

Hello. I got a type 3 engine, and found a whole set of stock type 3 fuel injection gear to convert it from stock twin carb.

But is it worth the money and the time/effort to wire up spagetti and plumb fuel return lines etc?

Does it really give you much of a gain over carbs?
Is it reliable?

Cheers guys.

much smmooother and better off with a after market ECU

rekon a porsche 1971 fuel injection kit would fit?

Says it shares the same 1.7ltr type 4 motor as the flat 4 vw. manifold mounts fit type 1 heads?

its a bit of fiddling around and will prob cost a few bucks but worth it in the long run

I ma not sure about the prosche set up as not familair with it

A Porsche setup from a type 4 configuration will not fit an upright type 1 configuration engine without a LOT of remanufacturing....they are just different. The type 3 setup has components you can use,but unless it is very cheap, the better option would to be to use mexi EFI intakes and aftermarket ecu etc....there is a thread here somewhere on the mexi efi beetles.Check egay for an aftermarket ECU that is cheap and you will have a setup that requires no stuffing around with unlike a carb setup, will start easier ad get better economy on the whole and if going offroad there is nothing better than EFI when you get in the rough stuff....when carbies are a pain....If your considering using the type 3 donk as a pancake config. then stick with the EFI that suits it,perhaps go with an aftermarket ECU,make sure your exhaust is clear of the fan and just do it!!!

I believe there is a Big difference in the 70s fuel injection
compared to late models

it was pretty basic back then

You won't have any float problems with fuel injection
when in the rough stuff...

even the most basic fuel injection systems out gun the best carbys

think about it computer is providing the perfect mixture all the time , carbs just cant match that, but yes the old D jetronic is pretty basic compared to todays systems
its not hard to make a junk yard setup with late model parts and aftermarket ecu

Here's an excellent article from shoptalk on fuel injection systems from VW http://shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=114309 Lists the basic systems and the dis/advantages.

I'm over 44 IDF's and look forward to eventually having efi on my 58.

I'm estimating $2k min is required, on top of the already purchased twin 48mm throttle bodies, but improved drivability, power and efficiency I'm sure will make it worth it... 👍

Thankyou gentleman!

This is a gold mine of info, cheers brus,
very helpful stuff.

an efi system sounds lovely. 😏

All sounds great.
Reub that reality hits home though with the cost(2G + throttle bodies!)
Plus some dyno time I gather.

EFI is like heath insurance.
Technology and reform should make it more affordable.
You know what has happened though.

i agree to disagree.
the first questin that need to be asked is BUDGET.
simply giving your standard car a good dyno tune will be a massive improvement.if you wish you can even play aroung with a few styles of dissy.exhaust .carby's etc etc.there is always power to be gained.but go back to that dirty litttle word BUDGET.
when you go efi. make sure your wallet has a good dose of money in it before you start.and if you are going down that path.why not turbo as well its only a few more pipes to be plumbed in.
any how that's my 3 cents worth
