Silly to have to ask this question

I feel like a bit of a tool to have to ask this question, but how do you operate the heating of a 1973 Superbug (if the heater channels are ok, I hope).
I have three dials the two on the left seem to control fresh air and windsheild, dashboard and the third smaller one seems to control the fan.
I can't tell if there is some form of heating control, could use some advise as I'm totaly new to beetles as I only bought this a couple of days ago.
Still in love with it though.

Thanks

PS hope the image link works.

Look down on either side of the handbrake. The right hand lever if you pull up is heat on ,down obviously heat off. The left hand one on mine, is heat through the footwells with the lever up and to the windscreen with lever down. BTW no question is too silly to ask, my dad had used and owned VWs nce the 40's but didn't know that they could demist the windscreen or that the rear seat went flat till he gave one to me in the early 70's and I started playing around with them.

Sides ·

Yeah - similar thing where my dad had owned a '59 and a '63 since new, and when I got my '70 he was stumped on how to turn the heaters on - he was expecting the twist knob near the gearshift !!!

If you pull up on those levers and DON'T get hot/warm air blowing through, either your engine/fan isn't running or the cables have been disconnected where they reach the engine... which is pretty common.

Bizarre ·

If you PM or email your details i can send you a PDF of the original instruction manuals

talk about complicated!!!

Took em another 30 yrs to adapt the single push button action to direct the air flow haha

Cool though,
would feel like one of those railway track switching coordinators with all the levers to push and pull...

I always laugh when people say how crap the heating system is in a beetle, I once had a music cassette melt to the floor because a stupid girlfriend didn't pick it up when I asked her to!!😠

68AutoBug ·

Yes,
the heaters have always worked for Me...
from the 60s to now...

I have noticed that they do however go to warm when its
around zero degrees... and driving fast..

as the air doesn't have time to warm up...

but all the other times its too hot to have on full..

Thanks very much for your help, I've only been a Beetle owner for a few days and already I'm amazed with the help and advice from you all, so thanks again.

PS I can't pm yet as I've only done a couple of posts, but if you could email me the user manual to glencsiro@hotmail.com I would be in your debit.

A freind use to say "the only stupid question, is the one you don't ask".

have a look and see if the hoses from the fan housing on the engine to the exhaust are in place and also the hoses from the heaters to the car are there
alot of ppl remove these cos they get fumes in the car or are under the wrong impression there car will run cooler without them

the heaters in later 70s beetles dont work as well cos the heaterboxes dont have the fins inside
just j pipes with sheetmetal around them
i put the finned type from my 71 super into my 74 and the difference was incredible, enough to melt the empty coke bottles laying on the floor

Glen, the knobs on the dash arnt anything to do with the heater theyre just ventilation

the left one opens up the vents above the radio and the right one opens the windscreen and door glass defroster vents and if there isnt enough airflow when on the move like sitting in traffic u can put the fan on

you have email
