oldskl60 ·

Hey All
Thought I would finally put some pics of my rag. I have finally got it up to Brisbane from Adelaide - hoping to get it to the track soonish. Plenty of work to go though. As you can see, tiny garage but just enough room to tinker...
Cheers
Tom

VWCOOL ·

Nice! Too good for the track...

Dasdubber ·

Nice one Tom - another tough beetle being built in SE Qld is great for the scene up here! Tell us a little more - obviously the alloy beam and centrelines mean business!
Al 👍

oldskl60 ·

It is pretty hard not to get enthused by the scene up here! Can't wait to be able to have a run again - current aim is Warwick 2009...
It will be running an superflow'd (48 x 38mm valves) 2332cc motor, IDAs, Berg 1.52:1 rockers and bugpack cam (similar to fk89).
The motor and gear box have run 11.6 (best mph of 117)in a very light car. I am adding a heap of weight given that I want to be able to drive it on the street (may change beam) - so if I can hit some low 12s I will be happy.

Dasdubber ·

Great stuff mate - looking forward to seeing the progress!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Sounds good mate. Be another welcome addition to the fast Volksy scene in Brisvegas!!

GASBNR ·

I like your style,Look forward to seeing this in the flesh
why can't I find a golde like this??

Turbo54 ·

Is this the running gear out of 'beetle juice' ex adelaide car?

Good to see you've got the car back home.

Thanks for backing me up Pete Wood - that was my thought also...

Turbo54 - yes it is the motor and gearbox out of the car once featured in hot4s as "Beetle Juice" - this car is now ( regretfully) retired.

Pete - I am sure I will have to take you up on the offer! It is very much appreciated!!

Dave - great to hear from you! Any news re your cars?

We did up a couple of clips way back if anyone is interested...

After minimal progress on the ragtop, a few months back I decided I would put my 2332 in my brown '58. It has taken a heaps longer than I had hoped but today (after approx 4yrs) I was able to fire it up. It fired first pop bringing a rather large smile to my face!! Still plenty of finishing off to do before hitting the track.

The tranny has also had some upgrades. After Pete and I noticed a 'loose' spider gear pin , we shipped it off to Dangerous who confirmed a shagged super diff. Dave went through the box and ended up fitting a spool, new syncros etc...

Looking forward to hitting the streets! Hopefully next weekend...

FROSTY ·

Awsome !!!!!

reub ·

Sweet dude. Gives me something to aspire too. 😉

davidoconnor ·

Great stuff Tom, I've been looking forward to this!!

oldskl60 ·

Thanks guys will keep you posted with progress.
Marcus, you're welcome anytime mate.

dangerous ·

What is the latest Tom?!

RAZ34 ·

Hurry up Tom. Pete and Tom were walking around like Zombies after a big thrash to get the car there. I know the answer but will let Tom spill.

hellbugged ·

that's beautiful!

oldskl60 ·

Yep after a monster effort by Pete, we made it to the track for a low key familiarisation. Pete collected myself and the car Friday morning. Only stopping for about 5hrs we test drove it for the first time at 3:30pm Sat, then straight to the track at 5.30pm. I can thank Pete enough - I reckon it would have taken me a couple weeks to get it to that point.
With circa 160 cars we were lucky to manage two runs. Plenty of nerves (new car, track blah blah..) but so glad to be back in a hot vw.
The first one was a bit of a debacle but it was only ever going to be a half track romp... Launched at about 6,000, missed second gear and rolled off it at half track. All felt and good and found my way to the return road. No time was recorded due to computer error but it did not really matter.
The second pass was a little better although I missed second AGAIN... (welcome to the amateur hour). Ran through with a 13.43 at 105.5 (pretty sure that is what it was). It felt great off the line, plenty of wheel spin but still managed a 1.86 60' (i think, time slip is not with me ATM).
The car felt good, a still few things to do but hopefully it has a 12second full street trim (full int and street tyres) pass in it...
A MASSIVE thanks to Pete and Rod for all their support, advice and patience!

vassy66T1 ·

That is awesome Tom!! Bit of "mumbo" there

Good on you Pete and Rod for lending a hand..

reub ·

Nice work Tom, and great work to Pete for assisting you get there.
Look forward to reading of a 12sec pass👍

matberry ·

Great to hear Tom, well done.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Well done mate ! Car has much more in it yet ! Looks great under lights 😎

oldskl60 ·

Thanks guys. Cool pic Pete - thanks for finding. Looks like i will have to detail the pan (or just the bits you can see)

Dangerous, the spool took a bit to get used to on the street but loved it at the track, especially coming out of the burnout... Third gear, as you suspected is nice and loud but it will beat listening to my wife saying "slow down"...

debiasi4 ·

great to hear you got to the track again tom car looks great
adam

Dasdubber ·

Congratulations Tom - that is a great result for the engine's first outing on the track. Definitely promising signs of things to come!
Al

Turbo54 ·

Awesome car tom. love the colour and the times. Pitty it's not still here in Adelaide with some of the other hot streeters.
T54

GASBNR ·

I like it, nice work Tom and team😎

FROSTY ·

Mate the car looks HOT!!!! next time your heading out let us know, i would have driven out to see the first outing.

oldskl60 ·

thanks guys.

Frosty, will definitly give you a heads up next time. It was touch and go right up to about 4pm Sat arvo so it was pretty late notice.

Heath, i agree mate. Hopefully some of the hot streeters will make the trek to warwick again this year. easy for me to say that living 2hrs away though...

Craig Torrens ·

I love this car 👍

wilderness ·

beeyootifullll!!!!!

Keith Haeusler ·

My new favourite car.

Congratulations, it`s a credit to you and all involved.

Regards, Keith

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Congrats Tom on getting it all together. Look forward to seeing the ol' girl with some more mumbo in the back at the track!!

davidoconnor ·

Tom,

The car looks awesome, it's a real credit to you and team Dak-A-Tak!! I can't wait to see this on the Cal Look Top 20 for 2010!? Is this the plan?

How's the car feel with a spool compared to your experiences in Adelaide with a Super Diff? Any plans to bolt the slicks on?

HGFS ·

Dak-A-Tak wrote:Well done mate ! Car has much more in it yet ! Looks great under lights 😎
Car looks awesome, this is EXACTLY how I wanted my drag car to look! I may have to change my plans now. I love the brown & erco's. Good to see you've got it to the track, hope all goes well getting the times down

oldskl60 ·

Craig Torrens wrote:I love this car 👍
And it loves your traction bar Craig!!

Thanks for the kind comments guys. Seems like a few brown beetles (two in the2010 cal-look ultra vw) getting air play at the moment.
This is one of my favs: http://jg54greenhearts.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html There are better pics of the zwitter at the track but I could not find them..

Dave O'C, I would love to see it in the cal-look top20 - big ask and with a baby only months away... maybe 2011...
The spool brings out the creaks and groans and takes a few more revs to get it moving in tight areas or corners. But in the burnout patch it felt awesome, really direct and predictable. It is hard for me to tell whether it was the track, the spool or both but it left straight from the line with a nice amount of spin and stayed straight.

matberry ·

Tom the pic above is awsome.

As said above, your ride is sooo sweeeet 👍👍👍
Bit better than a Kaddie huh?

reub ·

SWEET❗

Love the Zwitter too...

crazy kids in adelaide 😉... need a race track...

David, glad to hear your toys are migrating to brisbane (and gathering parts too). Look forward to seeing them in the flesh. Plasma is perfect!!

oldskl60 ·

I forgot how much I like BERMs!! I had been thinking I would like some rims with a bit more detail. I was thinking Fuchs, but after test fitting Rods BRMs I am back thinking about my old favs. Thoughts?

Also put the bumpers back on to appease the police...

oldskl60 ·

With Ercos and T-bars

reub ·

Can't beat the Erco's dude👍
Some Fuchs would look sweet too...😏

matberry ·

Your car looks the biz any way you dress.
For me though, I don't like the wide 5 Fuchs, the Erco's more race, the BRM's more street look

vassy66T1 ·

ditto to Matt's thoughts.

The BRM's and the bumpers etc looks excellent.

GASBNR ·

Just keeps looking better.......you going to Valla?

empi ·

Hello,
Cars looking great , wondering what colour brown was used on this car?
Cheers
Empi

Dak-A-Tak ·

Tom , Looks reeeeeel sweat ( nice jewel , old skool ) , class act , then erco's on race day .

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

BRM's and bumpers sweet as. Come race day swap bumpers and rims and away you go. Looking nice Tom!!

oldskl60 ·

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll keep an eye out for a set I reckon.

Hey Oliver, unfortunately I am not going to valla. My wife will be 36 weeks pregnant so being that far away doesn't really work. 👎

Empi, the colour is texas brown.

Got a few things to fix/tune before heading to the track but hopefully get back there in the next month...

dangerous ·

What is the latest Tom?
How'd it go at Warwick?

oldskl60 ·

Hi Dave, Warwick was a blast!
Even though I only got one run before the right axle exploded, that one run was a pb and felt great.

PB was 7.766 @ 88.58 mph with a 1.716 60ft.
Best at Warwick previously was 7.938 @ 87.04
Best for car was 7.799 @ 87.26 (Willowbank)

Unfortunately I have not landed a new axle yet, sway-a-way will not have any until 15/11 and Karpiola does not have any short axles either... Will bring out the camera to the TNT.

empi ·

Nice work ol Chap!

Aussie ·

Geez was that a race axle or stock? Is the rest of the box OK?

oldskl60 ·

It was a race axle, old school 'crown' I believe.
The box had all gears and from what we could tell no schrapnel made it up the axle tube so hope fully all will be fine.

oldskl60 ·

Backing it up a little for the rest of the forum…

A few months ago while prepping for an race meet I noticed a loose valve guide and sent the motor down to Dr Dave to go through it to and make sure it was all good for the planned nitrous venture and to allow it to run on pump gas. Turns out it was lucky we did because the centre main had issues and Dave has made a heap of improvements.

While the motor was apart Dave dropped the compression to 11.5:1, added ceramic/Teflon coated wiseco pistons, titanium valves and retainers, new valve springs, ARP rod bolts and some head work. My ultimate goal was to drop the compression and go to pump gas (so I can turn laps of Willowbank without impacting the children’s education fund) without losing to much power.

The result: to say I am happy would be an understatement, we ended up gaining 6 - 8hp after going down in compression, dropping the fuel to 98 octane and adding air filters.

To give respect where it is due, I can't thank Dave enough! The service that he provides is phenomenal!

The observations that I have made in dealing with Dave is that he listens to what is the goal and did not run off on his own tangent. He kept me informed (emails with pictures and explanations) at every point, this helps give comfort that you are not being taken for a ride (not that any VW operators do). And the clincher – he is ultra efficient and turns the work around really quickly.
After less than 48hrs of me dropping the motor to him, I had a complete list of the new items I required, initial head flow figures and photos of the things that he was not happy with.
His facilities are great including his latest addition of the flow bench. Great for initial readings and then seeing the gains. On my old school Superflow 1 heads, Dave picked up a heap of cfm in the lower lift and solid gains in upper ranges ie 35% at .200 thou lift, 15% at .400 and approx. 5% at .650. The final cfm at .650 (25”) was 220.5 (correct me if I am wrong Dave). Also big gains in the exhaust right through the range and bare in mind I did not want to spend thousands…

Looking forward to getting a new set of axles… will keep ya’ll posted!

reub ·

Can't wait to hear how it all goes dude...
Gotta love the hypo aircooled hey 🙂 👍

Keith Haeusler ·

Awesome work Tom and Dave. Are you coming down next Feb? would be good to see it at WSID.

Good luck with the axles.

Keith
