How unreal was this to watch tonight on MAX...............the OILS playing live on Goat Island (Sydney Harbour)............felt like it was only yesterday...............bloody hell it was 1985,where does the time go.

Classic to see the Harbour bridge and Opera House in darkness, not like the christmas tree they are now !!!!

Ah those were days 馃槑

I missed it, but have got it on tape somewhere. I had an Oils on the Water T-shirt all those years ago. "My City of Sydney...I love your tug boats with their fantastic water displays yeah....".

where have you been Craig?

this concert has been played hundreds of times on ABC TV over the past 23 years.

also, DVD (Best of Both Worlds) of that concert and another 1981 Capitol Theatre was released about 2-3 years ago.

Got all the Oils DVD's and albums in my collection. Actually went to their last concert before they broke up at Twin Towns at Tweed Heads. They hadn't made it public that they were splitting up but I knew something was up when they got their long time roadies up on stage and gave them presents for all the hard work over the years on the road with them. They started playing at 9.10pm(Diesel was the suppport act which was awesome too) and didn't walk off stage after 2 encores till 12.45pm!!! They went hard and really looked like they were having a ball. I was so stoked to have been there for it after I heard on the news they had called it a day a few weeks after. One of their best performances I had seen to date and have been to quite a few!!! (Fisherman's wharf on the Gold Coast, Festival Hall, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, Rock Arena to name a few for those old enough to remember!!)

You must of been in your early 30s there Craig.

Shame they broke up. Would of loved to see them live, Peter's dancing and all...i am curious though, on one of their songs they smash a bottle in a musical interlude bit (i think its power and the passion), did they ever do it live???

I saw them at least 15 times Mick, and no, they never broke a bottle during Power and the Passion live.

Best gigs for me where at the Enmore during Species Deceases tour, and then a week or so later at Gosford. The Enmore though will not be forgotton. We squeezed our way down the front the sweated through the next two hours. I think the Spy's supported them too, which was brilliant.

Actually...to go a little off tack....I was crossing the Nullabor and we stopped overnight at Eucla. That afternoon we drove down to the old Telegraph Station and we drove past this bloke jogging the the middle of nowhere. So I pulled over the 4WD, and yelled out to the bloke "what the heck is Craig Bloxom doing out in the middle of nowhere". Lo and behold, he came over and had a chat for about 10 mins. He just given up on The Spys (it was 1999), and he was heading over to WA to sort his life out. He's now in Mexico running a restaurant with his artist wife.

Yep it is in the Power and The Passion. the "muscial Interlude" as you call it which is mainly Rob hurst going nuts on the Drums was actually recorded in one take with him going all out and having a ball then at the end he actually grabs a bottle of water and threw it against a concrete wall.

Recorded once and when replayed back to the band they sat there and said perfect and that's how it was then released as a single. Have seen them do PATP live and it is the best. Although if they did smash a bottle at the end it would put the finishing touches on it that much more....

Mick058 路

yeh, smashing bottle would of been tops to watch. I would of been cheering. Its the little things...

Didn't know it was all one off take, thats a good effort. It's also music at its best, when you pull something out of no-where.

those were the days before a man would give up his principles and sleep with the enemy.

I was giving him the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe he would just sit quietly in opposition biding his time. It seems not though.

I love the oils, still have all their early stuff on vinyl, and later stuff on CD and they still get a fair workout. But I think he would have more credibility if he were to speak up a little. They arent anthems anymore, just songs.
