hi, there are many kits, i like to know your experience with and about the pros and cons of the diff brake kits for link/pin &ball joint beams, and what is and isnt necessary, assuming the car is about 200hp and is a weekend driver, appreciate your feedback. grogy

hi, i seen them advertised, read a few bit about them they look ok, but id llike to know how much the kit weighs, i read on one forum that pete from airkewld said if u running 135/145 on the front, discs are a waste of time. i just like to hear from those who have the diff type of kits or 'home made' kits to be able to make an educated decision to buy wisely. thanks

what about these?
Wide Five Front Cross Drilled Brake Kit Price: 465.00 USD
We offer high performance drilled and slotted kits at around the same price as everyone else's blank rotor kits. Take advantage of the drills that help keep these non vented rotors at a cooler temperature. The slots will give the rotors a "bite" for better braking and not to mention they just look better all around. This combination will also help the rotors from warping and the zinc platting will prevent rusting. Why only go half way with the disc brake kit when you can go all the way with drilled and slotted kits.
Wide Five Front Drilled Disc Brake Kit (bolts on to the stock splindles)
Link Pin $465.00 USD + postage
Ball Joint $465.00 USD + postage

I dont think it would matter what brakes you had if you had 135's on the front of a 200HP VW 馃槀

Gotta agree here.
My brothers beetle with 165's and stock quality engine [1600 peeshooters] understeers like a ....... car that understeers bad!

thanks for the replies, its what i thought, so what disc kits does everyone recommend and why?

I used the Vintage Vee Dubs kit for K&L
Why you ask
Made here
Does not widen track, actually narrows it 6mm each side (some widen it by 12mm a side)
Uses commodore calipers (I think I'll be able to get them locally)
discs 2mm thicker than most other brands gives me
1 1/2 hrs to install
Vintage are here if i need them
hope this helps

I just made another set using the stock vw stubs , rx7 hubs to get 5 stud , & 4 pot brakes a NC machined adapter sleeve for the bearings using the rx7 bearings , adapter plate for the caliper .This should pull up the 300hp drag bug ok , rears are ford ea with v force hubs
were are you Simon ?

Link pin is not very adjustable and the trailing arms flex under cornering loads. Ball joint allows you to dial in useful amounts of negative camber. If you want a better setup get an Lbug/Sbug with macfearson struts.
Re brakes; Whatever kit you buy, just make sure the parts are available over here. I personally have a volks conversions kit. I think VWcools kit looks a lot better (if can stop a 300hp corvette it will stop a 200hp beetle). Vintage make brake kits, Vforce make them. I'm guessing Vforce would be cheaper but I don't know for sure. Steer clear of OS stuff if you can unless there is a very good reason for using it.
P.s. all volkswagens understeer. It's just a matter of how much and when. 馃ゲ
P.s.s. anyone using 135s on a beetle needs their head read. All cars need shock absorbers, don't believe anyone who says otherwise. 馃お

These are a nice kit and work well, but are very very heavy.

why not use the local guys, they know their stuff,Vintage or V force have a lot of experience and knowledge that they are willing to share. Sure a lot of this stuff appears cheaper but if it doesn't stop or breaks someone usually gets hurt. over the years I have seen a lot of Mazda front brakes converted to the wide 5 beetles. some good some bloody awful. As for dicing the shocks, just try it on a backyard somewhere to get a feel why they are there.
