my Karmann on hoiiday in 2006

karmann54 ·

Here's a photo of my '63 Karmann Ghia the last time I drove it at the 2003 Dubs by the Pub - the one on far left. Has about 52000 miles on it now.

I've since partly dismantled it ready for resto, but our house reno must come first. Later this year for paint I hope.

karmann54 ·

And here is my old '54 karmann cabrio, obviously the source of my user name. No longer mine....

gellecan ·

Thats cool havent seen that many together in Aust need to see more

restonubie ·

My 72 ........... a project in progress 🙂

gellecan ·

How can you not like them don't thay look good

ancientbugger ·

Hey Karmann54 how on earth could you let something like that go!! My cab has some bad rust but I have to hold on to it till I can restore it,the thought of letting someone else get their hands on it just doesn't come into it. Wish I had a Ghia as well, I still miss the one I had to give up in the UK and that's 20 years ago🙁

gellecan ·

Still time to get another one minde you there is not many good ones out there for sale what i have seen before i got this mine thay are asking to much for a lot rust and to much work had to be done to them i got mine S/A 2 months ago good buy for the money

Winding the clock back here to 1988 with my 1960 KG. Slammed, dechromed and moons.

First shot with original Ansa exhaust which I got rid of because I hated the note. If only I knew then what I know now. Not long after I got it on the road (check the overspray on the rears).

Taken at Valla a few months later with 1640, Bugspray, dual quietpacks, and an old Holden peep mirror.

VWCOOL ·

My ex-girl's Ghia... Lucky we're still mates so I might get to drive it again 🙂

It was pretty tough to sell the cabrio, but I had to make a choice of one or the other as we were buying a new house at the time. Real Estate ain't cheap! The cabrio although rarer needed a lot of bodywork to bring up to scratch - new front clip, new rear apron, cabrio decklid missing. It was going to cost a lot of money. 'Phoebe' the ghia is a rock solid, low mile original car. Plus my better half preferred the ghia. Life has continued to get in the way of restoring Phoebe but it will happen soon.

The guy who bought the cabrio owned a panel shop so I knew he could do the necessary work. Unfortunately he died a year or so ago from cancer or something, don't know what has happened to it.

I probably should change my user name now, I sold it 4-5 years ago!

Work has stopped for a few months as I'm in the U.S for awhile. I can't wait to get back and finish this off- she's so close!

This was a picture taken before I left while I was halfway through fitting a headliner.

Yogie ·

Here is a photo of our 72 karmann cab after restoration with our 68 that was restored about 12 months earlier and the new beetle. The other photo is of our ghia that I will hopefully start work on this year. Have most of the parts for him in the garage now.

Karmann54,
Long time no see... hope all is well.
no real progress on our lowlight for various reasons similar to yours .... 🤪
but, we had the paint done & I'm hoping to fire things up again soon & move on to upholstery etc.
cheers
Andy

gellecan ·

I do hope so we need to see as many K Ghia on the road and not in the grave yard thay are a classic little gem of a car i had a 66 Beetle before the Ghia and i would much sooner drive the Ghia god to see more Ghia on the forum keep it up we need to know were thay all are and there and there updates so please keep the updates updated. please thank Glen.

Our slightly ratty 1960 KG pictured at the Noosa Classic Car Show a couple of years ago

ancientbugger ·

Whenever I pass your place Andy, I always look to see if it's outside......jealousy is a very bad thing😬

lowrider ·

Hey Baz, remember this?

ancientbugger ·

Yes I remember it, she's looking a bit worse for wear at the moment as I've had to use her a lot more than I'd bargained for with all this rain for the last year. A buggy is not always the form of transport in a storm🥲 Maybe another little trip should be suggested for us up here on the Sunshine coast as there must be a few around.

gellecan ·

How old is the pic of the Ghia it looks pretty good clean there❓👍

lowrider ·

Glen,
Tha'ts from a couple of years back.
The KG is an old resto from the 80's.
It had centreline wheels & horrible stripey Cal-look seats & door panels ( which are still there ❗)
It had been shedded for about 10 years before we bought it.
I wacked a motor in it & some new wheels; and left it at that, for now.
There's a couple of small dings on the other side & the paint needs re-doing....

What's the story behind yours?

Axelpressbutton,
Look forward to seeing yours on the roads around the Sunny Coast before too long!

gellecan ·

It's a short story i have had the car 3 month . It sat in a garage in South Australia for 2 year with no rego till thay decided to sell it thay know nothing of it's history so i can not tell you when it was restored because thay did not even know mind you it would be nice to know plus it just got 2nd place for best standard Karmann Ghai at the 2008 Sydney VW Nationals that made very happy 👍 🙂

axlepressbutton ·

Thanks Lowrider,
I'll be in-touch when I'm back in the country. I was still hoping for a look at your Ghia up close to help me out with a few details. I've got a couple of other projects sitting around in the yard back home that I'm itching to get back to also. To be honest, my projects are the things that are making me most home sick right now!
I miss my welder 🙁

vwsteve ·

Love the look of your ghia axlepressbutton, keep up the good work👍

lowrider ·

My 61 Cabrio

gellecan ·

the 68 looks sweet and having full history would be unreal, how long have you had it in the family for and do you intend to keep it👍👍😎😎

chickenfillet ·

We've had it for almost 6 years now, the original owner bought it out of the window of a department store in SA where it was part of a display and kept it till she died. The husband then kept it for the next few years, then when he popped his clogs we were lucky enough to pick it up through an ad on drive.

I'm 33 now so I'll definitely keep it till I checkout too!

Kev

gellecan ·

My Karmann came from SA so if you could find out any info on my Karmann it would be most greatfull
rego was 61 GHIA before that it was XBB 549 it came from Colonel Light Gardens from a S Plummer❓❓

ancientbugger ·

Hey chickenfillet, if you checkout soon can I have it.........please🤘

gellecan ·

your will have to get in line for that one 😎😎😉

ancientbugger ·

I had first dibs!!!

badkarmann ·

just a few to show

gellecan ·

I think you will find there are others that wanted it before you😏😏

Menangler ·

This is my '64, it is an original unrestored little old lady car, now with Sprintstars and a 1776 with a pair Dells

axlepressbutton ·

Love the 64 Menangler!!! Why have we not seen pictures of this one before?
How is the interior? What's the full story with this car?

I had been playing with the idea of putting my Sprintstars on the Ghia but had been worried about clearance issues because of the off-set. They look great on your car- but I'm interested to know if you've had any problems. I've fitted a 4" narrowed beam and have decided to run with stock rims.
I've got a 2054 motor coming from the States this month with dual 44 Webers. Fingers crossed for finishing this long overdue project very soon.

Menangler ·

I have had the '64 for about 4 years, I bought it after the previous owner passed away, she bought it from her boss in the late 60's and had owned it ever since, car was originally from Pennant Hills in Sydney, then she moved to Nowra about 12 years ago.

It has always been garaged and very well looked after, it does have the odd scruff here and there, but for a 44 year old car it is very nice, inside is all original and in very good condition.

Sprintstars fit well, I have 155 Michelins on the front and a 195 x 65 on the rear, they miss the back of the rear guard by a bee's pube.

axlepressbutton ·

Awesome car!! Thanks!

gellecan ·

great car thanks for sharing the pics👍👍👍😎
