Evenin All, Im looking at buying a torque wrench to replace the one I lost many years ago, Im just not sure what range of nm / ftlbs etc etc to get.
Also, best to get a 1/2 or 3/8 one?

This one should do the job, right up to axle nuts, anything under 20ft lbs on a dub is just common sense...spark plugs etc..

Generally,(unless it's something REALLY delicate), things listed with a low torque setting are ok to do by hand, just use a smaller tool, like a ring spanner or, a 3/8 drive socket rather than a 1/2 inch. ( length of ratchet tool is the decider) That way you lessen the risk of stripping threads.

Regards,

Matt.

I would NEVER buy a second hand torque wrench.

I handle mine with care...

I only use it to do head studs , rear axle nuts, etc
that have special tensions...

I'm now doing up My engine sump nuts with one finger on a spanner
very easy to damage....
although so far I've only damaged the nuts...

i do calibration checks on torque wrenches at work and can adjust the warren and brown deflecting beam type. if anybody thinks their wrench may be a bit suspect.i work at richmond raaf base.just pm me and i would be happy to do it.

Cheers Homer..................good offer 👍

Hi Homer

I have 2 Warren & Browns, a 1/2 & 3/4, both are very old, but well cared for. How can I take you up on your generous offer, can I bring them out to you?

Lee, does your 1/2 torque wrench go high enough to do rear axle nuts or do use a torque multiplier?

I think you need two. A smaller 3/8 for heads and any smaller stuff, eg when doing heads, should always torque in stages [8, 12, 15, 18/20 ], and the bigger one for bigger stuff [obviously] TIV flywheels 80 ft/lb, to do T1 flywheels you need a multiplier [unless you got a really big one [>300 ft/lb]

Go the Warren and Browns, we have a few... all i think.. 1/4", 1/2", 3/8", 1" and a bigger one again, forget what it is.. never really use it personally.. the good thing about them is they can be serviced easily and last FOREVER.

personally i'd go the 3/8, does most things easily ours i think has a range of 7-80 ft/lbs, generally that would do most but in some cases the 1/4 is handy but if you just wanted one for general use i'd go the 3/8.. mainly cause there not cheap! 😂🙅👍
