hi ...

while searching for a new engine for my bug , I have come across a *apparently* brand new surplus Industrial 1600c 126A engine . From the pictures look exactly the same as the one in my car ... (other than the magneto , and the governor)

are these really the same engine ? Should I get it ?

Thanks !

.. check single port vs twin-port heads, and clutch too. Some/most industrials I have seen have the early 6V style clutch that is smaller. Oil cooler is another point of difference... others may know more

Depends on where it's surplus from, and what they used it for... VW used to customise them a bit for the customer.

Never seen a 1600, but dealt with a few of the 40 horse 1200's (or 1200A) that Dept of Defence bought to go into both generator sets and big 20/40 foot refrigerated containers. The configuration of those varied a bit over time, but yeah - they were basically the same as a normal engine just with a different carb/aircleaner setup and the magneto.

Also knew a guy who'd put several of 'em into beetles, magneto and all and they worked great.

like the others have said it depends on the application as to what specs it has
but im pretty sure they didnt make twin port industrial engines
u might have to change a few things to make it suitable for use in a bug
magnetos arent much good for street use and also alot of them had carbs with no accelarator pump

also dunno if all of them were but most industrial engines had alot lower compression than a standard bug motor
depending on ur driving habits tho may not be a bad thing

Kims got a 1600 industrial in his oval and gets pretty incredible economy out of it and ive been for fang in it and its not slow either

Yes, many had no starter motors
and were started with a crank handle

change distributor and carburetor plus anything else that is different...

as mentioned - clutch could be different..

I've only seen single port engines..

I have a one of these 126A motors in my Splitty, and have had another in a beetle, and have 2 more in the shed. There is a 122A motor about which is a 1200cc but the 126A is 1600cc.

They are great motors if all you want is a nice 1600 and don't plan on hotting it up at all. Being single port, they are quite torquey motors, and they pull pretty hard. Fuel economy is great, reliability is excellent (its all german parts), and you know that you've probably got 10 years+ of driving before it will need redoing. Most german dual port motors are probably on their 2nd/3rd/4th rebuild by now.

You will need to get the following to put it in your car:- Distributor, Carby, Heat Exchangers & Fan Housing & Exhaust (if you want heaters), generator stand, generator, pulley+nut, rear breast tin, flywheel, lower engine mounting studs (they have puny small ones),

If you want to see some pictures of them:- http://www.matara.net/gallery/armyengine?page=2

You can pick them up for between $400 (incomplete and fairly used) to over $2000 with all the bits and very low hours. They have an hour meter on them to tell how much usage they've had. Try and get one from a cool room as pictured below, as they don't have the green paint and cork sound deadening on them.

Cheers
