Never brought a complete engine in, and not sure if it's a good idea or not.... chances of the engine having issues, warranty etc.... I guess others will post their thoughts on that one.

I've brought plenty of parts in though - both new and used - and yeah it can save you a bit of money, providing you're not in a hurry. On the duty side of things, Australian Customs will charge you $50 (ish) for a processing fee plus 10% GST on the value (not cost) of the engine. There is duty on top of that for some things, but since VW's are so old now parts for them mostly get exemptions. There's a bit of paperwork involved too since both sender and receiver need to be registered, but nothing too difficult really.

Best bet I reckon is ring Customs and ask them straight out what the process is - the couple of times I've rung they've always been pretty helpful.

Good luck !!!

long way for warranty repairs also there are some guys over there like here that should never be allowed to touch a spanner again after what they have done to previous engines. make sure you research it really well.

Bizarre ·

i would only buy on personal experience

A lot of USA dont seem to mind buying grenades

Buy any mag and look at the EX adds
Then do a seach on any USA site

Basically
when you buy something from the USA

You have No warranty

and it wouldn't pay You to send anything back...

I bought a window rubber kit for a 1968 beetle and received a rear window rubber for a 1972> Super Bug
and its not feasible to send it back...

also side pop out seals for a 1968 and received seals for an early model... [up to 1964 in USA]

thats what you get from buying out of the country,,

enginewise , there are plenty of good engine builders in Australia with warranty.

my ex many moons ago did that trick from the great US of A..
it was all there and looked fine..
we fitted it up and wow whata you know..
when it got warmed up and up to running temp
it started to leak black gold.. (oil)
we pulled it out n found that it had a cracked case..
all these new bits fitted to a cracked case so it was basically useless and so we had to wrecked it as da case was unfixable..
from that of course there was no recourse to follow (not happy jan)
so a lesson for all of us was learnt.. an expensive one @ that!
just to let you know what happened to us yeah..
cheers h

There are a few good supplies in the USA though...

I been sussing this out for a while... Some claim to do a run test of the long block, provide you a direct dyno print out, and once it is tested, and cooled down again, they re-torque up all the bolts.... (cause of the bolts and threads getting seated and run it from the first go)

Mind you though, they say this, but i can't say you could be 100% guaranteed it ain't B-S

Who do people reccomend inside AU?

Brad ·

If you buy that you will regret it ......

Save a cent spend a $$$$.

Conti Engines (Bribie Island, QLD) will do a 1600 TP for around that money and give you a 20 000 km warranty and they are in Australia and actually build them properly ......

68AutoBug ·

Yes, I have no experiences but Conti have been around for many years..

I have heard people buying from Conti probably 20 years ago..
and many engine builders don't like to give warranty

I haven't heard anything against them..

Most VW shops also do engines..

Mick motors
SKH
VVD
Gary Williams in Sutherland shires
