This is the beginning of a long project! Started as a 1969 Beetle!
Will end up a Bugrod named Rene!
renebugrod ·
Removing the Body, Not easy on your own!
renebugrod ·
Just the floor pan, well most of the floor pan!
Good Place to start!
newghia ·
Work area looks warm, might i suggest a tv as well !!!!
Good Luck, should be moving along well judging by the posts.
Have you seen the "volkxrod" in the latest " volksworld " magazine, very cool !!
enjoy.
renebugrod ·
Welded in the floor!
renebugrod ·
Floor pan primed and ready for painting.
renebugrod ·
Thanks for the post I haven't seen the volksworld magazine with the volksxrod. I must find somewhere that sells the mag.
Cheers.
Heres some more photos of Rene!

watching this build with interest, are you putting in a beam extender, running without guards?
What type of welder do you use for welding in the floor. I only have an old fashioned arc welder, have to b uy a new one soon before i start building my car, what is the best to buy in your opinion? Cheers for any info and good luck with the build..😎
renebugrod ·
Thanks for watching I'll post some updated photo's soon.
I use a Boss Turbo Dual Purpose 150H Mig welder, gas and gassless, does panel welding and up to 6mm with ease. Set me back about $600.00 was recommended to me by a professional welding engineer.
The car will have no guards, no roof, half windscreen, will be registered for the road so will need to run small trailer style guards at first. Interior will be bare, see photos to come.
renebugrod ·
Floor pan Being Assembled. Everything used from the original bug, but using new Brakes, bearings and seals.
renebugrod ·
Floor Pan rear. I ground the paint off the gearbox fins. Something different.
renebugrod ·
Floor pan rear different angle.
VWFREAK ·
Great stuff, any idea what the final build will look like.
👍
renebugrod ·
Working towards something like this!
Will be making a fully road legal Volksrod, that you can build yourself or let us do it. This will be the prototype and a kit will be made from this. I am using everything I can from the original Beetle, to make the project affordable for anyone to build.
newghia ·
AWESOME work !
the pan looks hot
how long have you been building this?
renebugrod ·
Been building it for about a Year now, but spending a lot more time on it now. Here are the seats finished.
renebugrod ·
The back seat, I have padded foam to sit on while driving to give some comfort.
Thanks Greedy, been there many times, have got many ideas from the site. This first Volksrod I'm building will be very simple, not too much complicated welding or fabrication. Like the word volkswagen (the peoples car) this Volksrod will be the peoples Hotrod.
Dak-A-Tak ·
I'd like to know how are going to get full rego in qld ? ( no roof , cut windscreen , no roll cage , no strengthing ).
Like to build one myself but doesn't come under hotrod rules .
kroozzn63 ·
hmm looks sweet ,will the seats be legal like that? either way go hard dude prove us all wrong rego that little rod,
love the vision
renebugrod ·
Good Question! Cut roof has been approved, cut windscreen is under engineering certification at present, roll cage is not needed, as for strengthening, this is already approved by engineers, I can post photos but, the plans cost me a pretty penny, so I will post some photos, but not in detail. Thanks for the post. I am happy to answer any Questions. Cheers
renebugrod ·
The seats are not legal like that, the law says there can be no rips on tears in the seat, (none I can see), the reality is when I go for Road worthy, Just put seat covers on!
renebugrod ·
This is the Body in a bad way!
renebugrod ·
Heater channels completely gone!
renebugrod ·
I bought another body and began to cut and weld!
greedy53 ·
dam i like ya style don't sit around thinking of all the crap that will stop you doing it and just think about what you have to do to do it
i meet many more people who tell me it can't be done and 1 who says you can do it blesss his soul same with you cut it weld it than drive cross all problems as they pop up
good luck
BRENO ·
Your tranny looks like gasburner rims! cool.
bags ·
i'm with greedy on that one
renebugrod ·
Thanks for the posts, all is working out fine so far. I made some rear guards last week, tell me what you think. I am trying to use just parts from the original beetle, so you don't need to buy too much to build it.
This is the template!
renebugrod ·
This is the guard I made.
renebugrod ·
One more for good measure!

are you going to be putting a beam extension in rene?
If so will it be imported or will you build yourself?
Will it be legal in all states?, keep up the good work but stop going away😎
eraser ·
im actually building one right now and i am liking your ideas, wouldnt mind having a chat about the chopped roof even payment for answers 😉 look out for a pm sometime soon (when i have money)
renebugrod ·
Hi all,
The car will be road legal in all states!
No beam extension, as I can't get it legal yet.
No chopping until the body is back on the pan.
Cheers
renebugrod ·
Fuel tank before I paint it.
Not sure what colour to paint it yet?
Maybe Gloss black or keep it Matt black?
Wannavee ·
Gloss the tank.Itd be a great contrast to the Matt i reckon
Come on,I'm hangin to see this finished! 🙂
renebugrod ·
I'm doing the best I can!
Here are some more pics.
Might do the wiring next, might put some mood lighting, red undercars? and some red interior lighting.

renebugrod ·
The rear has come up very nice.
renebugrod ·
Another for good measure.
greedy53 ·
looking bloody great i just can't wait to see it nearly finished and i know it will never be really finished,as you see more and better ideas evolve things will change
good luck
renebugrod ·
Thanks greedy for the comments, you got me motivated to do some more.
I have now started to do the wiring and have decided to mount the fuel gauge in the bonnet.
I have some lighting left over from a past project and was thinking of doing some kind of interior/exterior mood lighting.
Post your comments as I am open for suggestions.
renebugrod ·
Here is the dash, I have decided to use an older style speedo, get rid of the air vent controls, put red behind the grills.
renebugrod ·
Here's one more for good measure.
renebugrod ·
Think I might go looking for some wheels, going to go standard rims and caps, only seriously wider at the back, not sure whether to go skinny or fat on the front?
renebugrod ·
Got some new wheels for her, I'll post some pics soon.
I've been in the workshop welding up the support beams for the conversion to convertible. They have come up a treat!!
Will be welding them in place as soon as the Engineer approves the welding. Once that's done the body can go on the chassis and time to cut the roof off, waahoo!!
I'll post some pics soon!!
eraser ·
cant wait to see.

I like red wheels!!!
good to see the pics!!!!
renebugrod ·
Hi all
Come along way since last post, body is now on the chassis, Roof has been chopped off, doors on, boot on, bonnet painted (few final touches to complete), I will take some photo's and post them soon.
renebugrod ·
Here we go cutting the roof, Daughter was taking the photo.
renebugrod ·
Taking the roof off!!
renebugrod ·
Roof is off, now just need to put her back together.

renebugrod ·
Thought it needed some flames. Bare metal, with a gold candy over the top.
eraser ·
wow come a long way good work 😉
57 Chook Shed ·
Great work, like you say it takes guts to cut one up!
So are you going to chop the windscreen? I think you need to.
Have you considered a beam extension?
Dirtbag ·
Hi. Cool project. The bare metal with candy flames are a nice touch. My mod plate guy has given me the thumbs up for cycle guards and suicide doors on my little project, but I can't find an ADR approved beam extension, so I think I'll run it around for a month or so without one, and then just sneak it in there and see if anyone notices : ) What beam extension Officer??? Oh, and if you don't use the fat front wheels, can I buy them??? Please????? I need 2 widened stockies and can't find any. Keep up the good work.
renebugrod ·
Did a bit more work, got 135 x 15's on the front now, not sure if I like them? They are growing on me!
Rims are powder coated red now.
Started making the rear guards.
Bit more cutting here and there!
Post some pictures soon.
Keep the comments coming it motivates me!!
Cheers.
renebugrod ·
P.S I'm doing a windscreen cut, just not sure how low? 100mm??
Anthony have done everything myself so far, taking the body off was easy, putting it back on was tough!! Happy to share my knowledge, I'll give you call, use to have a VW night, mates came round and discuss what to do next and tinker a bit. Haven't had one in a while.
isky ·
That would be brilliant and much appreciated! You must have some pretty good mates 🙂 Most of mine including my family just say im crazy lol...
anyways i sent you a p.m a couple of days ago also....Cheers
renebugrod ·
Here are some more photo's.
renebugrod ·
Here are the new wheels, powder coated red.
renebugrod ·
And a picture of the new indicators, they are the same at the back.
renebugrod ·
This will be the gear stick, still needs welding in and painting.
DU88EN ·
holy crap that gearstick is huuuuuuggggeee!
loving the build so far, keep posting photos!!
greedy53 ·
don't know if this helps, but if you are having trouble with the gearstick spinning, i used a stick from a kombi it has a small rod at the bottom i just made a nitch in the beatle gear ror and no more spinning
dodgsun ·
those indicators off a bike?? LED?? lookin good. really need to start on mine soon, but will use the Baja/hotrod stlye h'lights with post bolted to the body.
keep it up 😉
DaveCarter ·
This thing is going to look so tough. Good build thread. Keep the pics coming 😀
renebugrod ·
Been Working on other projects, but will be back on this one soon.
Having problems getting the windscreen cut down. It's a 1969 beetle so has tempered glass ( can't be cut, without shattering).
Any suggestions?
Thinking about getting a flat screen and modifying the windscreen frame?
The indicators are LED motorcycle ones. Made of solid steel, got them from the states. $200 the set. Worth it though.
Few other additions
* Key-less Ignition, from jaycar, now just uses a small button key ring to start the car.
* Soft top, that is in the process of being modified to fit cut down screen, if I can get it cut down!
That is it for now, i'll post some Photo's soon!!
mcabs123 ·
wish i had more time to work on my ratvrod! very inspiring. gonna go stare at my car for a while.
renebugrod ·
Hi All
Back onto Rene (french for Re-Born) again. Did some electrics on her and now has keyless ignition. I am now looking for a motor.
Need a 1600 twin port, anyone with something give me a call.
Justin
renebugrod ·
Did some work on her, started on the support struts for the roll bar. Just need welding in. I'll post some pics soon.
Any comments keep me motivated!!!!
eraser ·
pft comments where are the damn pics :P im still dieing to see this baby's progress.
gorn ·
awesome build, more pics please lol
renebugrod ·
Cut the Windscreen down, little more progress. Work is taking up my time at the moment.
More photos coming!
renebugrod ·
Made some bumpers for the rod, cut the existing off and welded some rods on the ends, cheap, but look Great!1
road_zombie ·
looks like it will be a very sweet ride congrats on the work so far
renebugrod ·
Here is the update on Rene, this is the rear support beam, this will be underneath the rear seat.
renebugrod ·
I Have cut the windscreen down now, looks very cool. I have kept it below me line of sight so I won't need Windscreen wipers. All comments welcome, it gets me motivated!!
renebugrod ·
Another angle. Enjoy!
renebugrod ·
Started on the engine. will post a pic soon. Bought some awesome engine bits from the states!
Ozzyash ·
Interesting project,.....how did you cut the screen and are you fitting a rollbar?
renebugrod ·
Thanks for looking, the plans I have require a roll bar, but my engineer has informed me that if the car is only used on road it will not need a roll bar. the screen is made of polycarbinate for now, not legal! Still deciding what to do about a windscreen, will probably have a flat screen cut and modify the frame.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Good to see something different , mate . I need to talk to a engineer , who is the man ( name ) Have you spoken to him about extending the beam out ?
Peter Page
renebugrod ·
No Beam Extension! it changes it too much and then you need another modification plate. This project was started so that anyone can build a volksrod for the road. I will be documenting everything, it will be done the easiest way with minimal problems to get it registered. The engineer is a client of mine and doesn't do public certification ( I'm an exception).Sorry.
renebugrod ·
this is the new exhaust, finally fitted the motor.
1600 TP with twin 40IDF Webber's, Petronix electronic ignition.

Exhaust
renebugrod ·
Got the motor Started, it sounds loud as Hell!!
Very Happy!! few more bits to weld, and off to the engineer.........

renebugrod wrote:No Beam Extension! it changes it too much and then you need another modification plate.
Hi renebugrod,
So what if you wanted to do a beam extension anyway, comply and get the mod plate, do you know or can you find out whats involved?
renebugrod ·
Not sure what certification you need to do to extend the beam? It does change the Ackerman angle (steering Geometry) and can cause difficult steering and wearing your tyres and suspension out.
theVman ·
renebugrod wrote:Not sure what certification you need to do to extend the beam? It does change the Ackerman angle (steering Geometry) and can cause difficult steering and wearing your tyres and suspension out.
Hi renebugrod,
I’m not sure that it does harm Ackerman. In fact most of the articles I have read indicate that VW beetles have poor Ackerman anyway and the beam extender actually improves it. Most of the issue is at very slow speed like when doing a u turn at full lock. There is Ackerman angle and Ackerman steering and for small steering angles, Ackerman is minimal. I think more tyre and suspension wear comes from driving habit and poor wheel alignment rather than differences in Ackerman.
renebugrod ·
Thanks Vman, I will look into it in more detail, I assumed that the Ackerman would be correct when the beetle was built.
theVman ·
renebugrod wrote:Thanks Vman, I will look into it in more detail, I assumed that the Ackerman would be correct when the beetle was built.
Hi renebugrod,
Yes, so did I until I read up about "Ackerman Principle". Turns out there are quite a lot of manufactures that paid little attention to it at all. If you look at certain models within car brands, you find they all use the same suspension components across models. Some models have longer wheelbase (eg: Holden wagons/statesman's longer than sedans) without any correction of Ackerman. Some vehicle designs had bad Ackerman and required after market components to rectify or correct this.
I think Ackerman is used by authorities to discourage or stop people from doing modifications because it is such a confusing principle. They too think the manufactures always get it right, but that's far from true. They don't want to accept that some after market modification actually improve a vehicle but assume it has to make it worse.
Stretched vehicles all have absolutely killed their Ackerman but there are plenty of those on the road.
Using the standard VW front end and simply moving it forward via a beam extension does change "Ackerman" but not the" Ackerman angle". This slight change in Ackerman can be adjusted in toe when doing a wheel alignment.
Ackerman is also affected by, tyre slip angle which varies with speed, Lateral Force, tyre stiffness, tyre load, toe angles, camber, caster, lowering, rake, roll centre, wheel backspace and everything else you can think of that contributes to steering geometry.
So in real terms for example, changing from drums to disc's has 100 fold better safety improvement than worrying about slight changes in Ackerman with a beam extension.
This is why I find it hard to believe there is so many certifiers that have issues with beam extensions with regard to this.
More of a concern would be a beam extension without a brace back to the firewall.
This is longer but stronger
renebugrod ·
Thanks for the info, nice to know there are people out there that understand that you can't just build a rod without some planning!
renebugrod ·
Two month's pasted already! Time fly's! Back on the case again.
- Roll bar getting made at the moment.
- Door gussets getting rolled, should have them back soon.
- Seats fitted.
- Seat upholstery finished and ready to be fitted. (post pictures soon).
- Need some crazy bugger to test drive her!!

Nice work!! Considering the extension.

I've seen examples online of people using a sandblaster to cut the tempered safety glass down. Has to be cut on both sides. You might try looking at some of the hotrodder websites for more info.

Are you considering making a tonneau to cover up all of the seats when not in use? I think the car is crying out for one. Not only would it look awesome when driving alone, but it would be really handy if you ever needed to leave the car in the rain.

I wanted to build a Hotrod with a budget of $3000. So far so good! I will be making a picture book of how it is done, so that anyone can build one themselves. Keep posted.
P.S The build is on hold at the moment as I am waiting for other people to Make some parts. Namely the roll bar and door gussets, as I don't have a pipe bender on rolling machine.

I'd be interested in this book. Looks awesome so far..
Rob L ·
I love your build, and your aim for a under $3K Budget. I'd interested in your book (if nothing else to se the secret mounting😀). for me it is the first "Rod" and I dont have the funds for the enevatable mistakes on a big budget build.

from doug in the usa dont know the specs off the top of my head i think its 10 inch extension with a 2 1/2 inch drop

I just got a price from him, Douglas W Fuller (Dbug41) ($300 + $467 shipping = $775).
How does that compair with yours, the freight ridiculous?

But seriously I just built and had engineered a Range rover based Buggy

And then helped a mate put a Lexus V8 into a Toyota Surf with a 6 inch lift..all engineered.
Then the testing, my mate took it real easy, then I drove it like I stole it..wheelspin in 3rd on dry bitumen!!
The cars are still alive so I am a qualified test driver!!

Not that I'm being critical (far from it the build looks great and I have a huge admiration for anyone who can build this kind of thing), but I have to point out that if you have access to all the right equipment and a fully equipped workshop, a budget of $3k is possibly achieveable, however if you are a home builder who needs to outsource body and fabrication of the custom body parts, the budget would be a lot higher. Plus depending on the state the approvals and engineering would be a considerable portion of that budget.

Hi there Renebugrod,
Great build mate !!!! Very cool indeed.....
I have a question for you though in regards to your floorpans..... On the drivers side did you buy a half pan or a full pan and cut down to size ??? If it was a half pan where did you order it from ???
Thanks in advance

Hi All,
Been 10 years since I sold this unfinished rod. I have been wanting to buy her back for some time now and blow me down I found her in a barn, sitting, waiting to be finished.
Anyway, bought her back and now ready to get her on the road.
