Solex H30/31 PICT vacuum query

Hi,
I've got a Solex H30/31 PICT carby on a 1600 engine, using a single vacuum hose distributor(not sure what type but has 022 stamped on it).
My question is-on the rear of the carby there are 3 metal vacuum tubes, the bottom one goes to the distributor, the one above it has an end cap(sealed),and the one on the left of this is left open and sucking and not connected to anything-does it need an end cap to seal it?what should it connect to?
Also I have an original air cleaner-Is there any other air cleaners available that improve performance? If so where can you get them.

Joel ·

sounds like someone has connected it up wrong

looking at the carb if there are any ports facing u they should all be capped none left open
this would cause an air leak and make it idle rough and stall

the dissy vac should be connected to the port on the LHS above the mixture screw

Is that a picture of a Solex H30/31 PICT as it looks to have 1 rear facing vacuums-mine has 3

Joel ·

thats a 34 but there all similiar in lay out
the replacement carbs are made to be universal so have alll the barbs cos the yanks have alot of pollution crap on there cars that need the extra ones

only one u need is the left hand one for the dissy vac
others all need to be capped

Ok thanks Joel

The other outlet is for the vaccum operated preheated air flap in the some of the later model factory air cleaners.

As per this photo of mine.

Cheers

no its not
thats another wrongly connected set up
brendan that connected like that would only work when the throttles closed
it needs full time vacuum so it stays open all the time the thermostat calls for it

someone has changed either the manifold or the air cleaner
cos the preheat vacuum comes from the manifold just under the carby mounting flange

u can just make out in this old pic of mine were it connects to the original port on the inlet manifold

ur manifold is missing this port which is why someones connected it else where
thats actually the retard port for dual vacuum dissys

So Joel if I want to get my vacuum operated preheated air flap working- Can I use any of those 3 rear facing vacuums?,as I have no outlet from the manifold under the carby as you described

Bugger

i honestly wouldnt stress over it
ive got about 8 air cleaners with vac flaps in them under the house and only one still works

after 35 odd years the diaprhrams disintergrate but the one that works ive tried and it really made stuff all difference
probably if u lived in europe and had 8" of snow on the ground it may help

when they blow out all that happens is the engine sucks air past it and leans out and wants to stall

better off blocking them off particularly if the diaphrams toast

besides i dont see to many engines that still have the stove pipe off the head for the hose to connect to anywayz

thats a 76 model air cleaner on ur engine brendan, its got the charcoal canister barb on the side
what models ur bug??
