Premium unleaded fuel for a '62?

Nickster ·

Can anyone tell me whether premium unleaded fuel can be used in a 1962 Beetle without using the additive?

What's best for the engine?

Cheers

"my answer" is no you dont.
IF (and i doubt it) you have original heads there may be some cause for using it

USA (Cali in particular) has had unleaded since God was a lad an no additives there

I have a '64 Ghia with a stock 1200, I run it on premium with no additive, no worries, also run my stocker '66 1500 Splitty on premium with no additive, has done around 10,000 miles and the tappet adjustment hasn't moved.

u need to adjust the timing for premo to have a proper effect as premo has a slower burn
usually most vws will run the same if not worse on premo with the timing left stock
but get the timing just right and u'll notice a power diff and probably even mileage improvement

lets face it vw will run on kero nearly they were designed to run on what was available after ww2
i have always used unleaded in all my vw's and had no probs
my old bus ran a 1641 with a blower and used basic unleaded without additives and a top end pulldown after 10000ky's showed no wear or problems
hope this helps

I used Premium without additive for 8 or so years ( prob 60000 miles ) in my 1500 engine

the Premium wont hurt it and you will get better MPG just make sure the timing is right and you dont get any Pinging a compufire or similar ignition will help heaps as theres no movement in the old style points

You can also use the additive again it will not hurt the engine

Seeing yr from Bris Vegas also check all the tin ware on the engine and make sure its all fitted right and the engine is getting correct cooling especially with summer coming up
