Which fuel line goes where?

On a 2-litre Kombi, the fuel pump is on the lower right front of the crankcase, near the flywheel.

The pump has the usual two pipes in, one for the line to the tank, and one to the engine.

But which one is which?

I am in the process of reinstalling and replumbing my Kombi engine, and I cannot for the life of me remember. None of my workshop manual help - they say 'reattach fuel hoses.'

Which outlet goes to the tank, and which one to the engine?

I would take a guess and say the lower tube is the inlet and the higher is the outlet.

If you have 2 people, attach the hoses to the fuel pump, have someone crank the engine and the other person holding a fuel line into a jar (not attached to the carby). If the fitment is correct then the jar should have fuel pumping into it. If not, reverse the hoses.
Might be best to drain the carby by starting it with no fuel hose attached so it dries up and then you won't risk a fire with the engine running while performing the test.

Hi Phil

I'm pretty that Notch nut is correct, I'm almost sure that the inlet hose was a much larger ID than the outlet.

yep thats correct

i think theres also a small casting mark in the shape of a arrow for the directing just on the in n out tubes

Yes Adam, you are right - thanks. It is the 'lower' of the two pipes that is the inlet from the tank.

Dave and Steve were also right. The inlet pipe on mine is a larger diameter than the output, although the photo above (from the Gregory's Manual) isn't the same. And the inlet pipe has a triangular 'notch' in the body, just where the pipe goes into the pump, indicating 'in'.

I confirmed this yesterday by checking out a couple of other working Kombis from underneath.

Now I can get mine finished...finally.

make sure you clamp the hoses and use some tie wire around the clamp n body of the pump to ensure they dont blow off when running

this is the most common cause of a VW fire because of the 2 different metals brass n alloy

over the years they build up corrosion between the 2 different metals cause they to fly apart when heated

Hi Phil

No more catching the bus to work, that will be good.

Or to club meetings! Yeah its been a bit of a bugger, but it will be running again soon. Just haven't had a chance to lay a spanner on it since last weekend. Hoping to get some time this weekend...

Dave its an NOS pump I got from the Bus Depot http://www.busdepot.com/ in 2002. The fuel hose is all brand new and I have clamped every end. With the in-line filter and T-piece, there are 8 clamps in total between the tank and the carbs. I also gently peened the pump body where the tubes come out, as per Bob Hoover's TULZ articles.

add some tie wire just incase
