Hi everyone, my name is Adriaan and I am from South Africa. I would love to invite you all to join our SA Forum at www.aircooledvwsa.co.za
Does anyone perhaps have the contact details for Simon Glen?
Thanks!

Hi Adriaan, welcome along.
Simon Glen is based in Townsville in QLD and was once an active member of Klub VW Townsville there. I am not sure if he is still active. He used to come down to our big annual VW show in Sydney once a year, but haven't seen him for a while.

Great. A South African pops up on the forum just in time for the Wallabies and the Springboks.
Welcome by the way. Bring on the Rugby.

Townsville?????????????? Hope not......

Thanks for the welcome! I see under the 'spotted' heading someone saw the 411 belonging to Simon Glen recently?
Volksaddict ·
...MickH might have one also???
MickH ·
Nah I crushed that rusty old thing.
Phil74Camper ·
Well Simon did live in Townsville, but I'm reminded that Klub VW is based in Toowoomba. In fact I can just make out 'OOMBA' in the background of the third 411 photo. He may well have moved.

Hi Adriaan, welcome to the forum.
I recomend the ACVWSA forum I liked it!
If you are looking to score a 411 or something else from here I dont think you will get the friendliest reception.
I doubt though that you will be excommunicated fromthe AVDs forum as i was from the ACVWSA site for buying one of yours.
Good luck with whatever your endevours are ( except in beating the wallabies) and enjoy this friendly and informative site.

Merlin is kinda quiet at the moment - silent observer, though...
I just LOVE your Fleetline! Is it already in Aus? I am pretty sure I drove past that very same Fleetline in Pretoria about 2 months ago? I will help you to source some Sprintstars (SA Rostyles?), as I also feel it belongs on that Bus 😵💫

Geez, it's kinda weird - my post above was done on August 25, at 21:21 South African time, and it is already Tuesday in Australia!

Wallabies 27, Springboks 15.
Australia - 14 Gold, 15 Silver, 17 Bronze. Total = 46 medals. Population = 21 million.
South Africa - 1 Silver. Total = 1 medal. Population = 45 million.
But then South Africa has a Volkswagen factory and we don't...

Hi Adriaan Welcome the forum. I also have one of your countries cars. A 74 (I think !)beetle sedan. This car had no chassis number on it when I purchased it only a plate in the spare wheel well. Is this correct? had to stamp a number on chassis to register here. Look forward to hearing you response. Cheers
HotVWheels ·
Hi Dubb
Yes, that is correct. AFAIK all Beetle models from around '72 till end of production in '78 have no chassis number on the tunnel behind the hand brake, only on the factory plate in the spare wheel well. If you build a buggy on one of those 'blank' chassis, the SAPS (SA Police Service) needs to clear the title first, and then stamp there own number on it - quite a difficult process red tape-wise..
'74 Was the only year that SA Beetles were fitted with those large US-spec indicator lenses on the front fenders. More that willing to help with any more info you need, cheers!

here she is

Wow, what a beauty! You have a very special VW there, the 1600S - a car totally unique to South Africa as it has torsion bar and king/link pin front suspension with rear swing axles, yet the curved windscreen of the 1303 (a car never sold in SA). They were originally sold with 14' or 15' 'Rostyle' wheels, also known as SA Sprintstars (as in the period pic below), not the EMPI's on your pic. Note the small white round reflectors below the headlights, a requirement by law a fewy years ago. They are quite rare, even here with us. Do you have the correct rear '1600S' script on it?
LUFTMEISTER ·
no someone nicked it from the car yard between me see it and purchasing it. Would you be able to source some original parts for me? let me know by pm. Cheers
HotVWheels ·
Got one for you - it is a single plastic moulded script the shape of the curve of the decklid. The lettering was chromed, but it came off over the years. You are welcome to have it, PM me your address and wish list of what else you need

BOKS WHIP THE WALLABIES
30 August - Jongi Nokwe scored four tries as the Springboks powered to a record 53-8 victory over the Wallabies in their Tri-Nations rugby test played at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday. 🙅🙅🙅
LUFTMEISTER ·
Congrats...............now get back to working on your Volkswagen and mention this no more.🥲
Phil74Camper ·
Ouch. You got us there! We were pathetic, well done to the Boks. And South Africa still has a Volkswagen factory too.
PS - Coca Cola park?? What happened to Ellis Park? Don't tell me South Africa also has the noxious habit of renaming grounds after sponsors?
I still say Lang Park (not Suncorp Stadium). SFS, not Aussie Stadium. Homebush stadium, not ANZ, or Telstra, or whatever. Don't even mention Cronulla's ground at Endeavour - it's had more name changes than my old Beetle had engine rebuilds. At least there are no plans to change the name of the Sydney Cricket Ground (I hope)
