Whats the best way to get my CAMS license and what is the minimum that needs to be done to my car?
Does CLub VW Syd have CAMS affiliation yet?
Guidance would be appreciated.

Hmm... what sort of events are you planning on doing ???
A Level 2 Non-Speed is the lowest level license that lets you do events that are not measured against the clock such as Motorkhana's, Touring Road Events and Navigation Runs while a Level 2 Speed is what you need for anything that is timed, such as Hillclimb's and Sprints.
Only two ways really to get the license
- print and fill out the paperwork at http://www.cams.com.au/Content.asp?PageID=Competitors and send it in yourself
- turn up at a low level event like a Motorkhana or similar and get what's called a Single Event license, which the organzing club can then send into CAMS for you to turn into a full license.
Higher level events like circuit racing and so-one require higher level licenses, that are both more complicated and more expensive to get.
Oh - there's also the AASA system which is in competition to CAMS, but most club-level events are still run under CAMS.

Oh, and you don't need to do anything to your car to get the license - two completely separate things.
Minimum safety spec's and so-on for the car depend on what sort of event, but the best starting place is the CAMS Manual which is available online at http://www.camsmanual.com.au. Start with section 6, General Requirements for Cars & Drivers.

Cheers sides.
I watch a mate go out in his mini at Oran Park on the weekend - 3 laps kind of deal. Whats kind of license would that have required.
I assume i'm not allowed to run hillclimb because i have f/glass guards. Is this correct? or do you just fall into another class?
Sides ·
Oran Park I think it'd depend on who was running it - for Bug-In at Oran Park we all needed to have L2S licenses cos the club organizing ran it under CAMS, however if the sprint session was being run by the track owner/operator it was possibly being run under AASA. For example Queensland Raceway and Lakeside both run their sprint sessions under AASA, and since AASA and CAMS are competitor's neither side honor's the other licenses... which means that I've now got both CAMS L2S and AASA Clubman licenses.
Fiberglass guards can end up putting you in a different class, but they shouldn't prevent you from running altogether.
In Qld they have a Road-Registered class that I run in and fiberglass guards are fine there, however they stop me from being able to run Improvided Production. Other classes that do allow fiberglass are Sports Sedan and Sports Car Closed.

cool, i don't think i'd be competitive, just be nice to get into and see what happens.
So its worth getting both licenses if you get into it then?

Hi Mick
Club VW is now CAMS affiliated, still getting everything sorted out at the moment. We are planning to have a supersprint the day before the VW Nationals next year.

I'd say get the CAMS one definitely, since that's what most clubs run their events under so it'll be a more natural starting point.
AASA the application process is a bit simpler - just an extra $55 and an extra signature when putting in your event paperwork at whatever track it is that requires it - so I reckon just get that one when you need it. It's taken me 18 months of competing to do my first AASA event, but things might be different down there.
If Club VW is CAMS affiliated then that'd be a great option for your membership - always good to keep it VW I reckon, and doubly so if they start running motorsport events again !!!

You need your cams afiliated car club membership first, then as dave said fill in teh form and send the money off.
Sprints (ie cars not racing door to door, but racing against the clock, but with up to 5 or more cars spread around the track) requires only the 2S.
If you want door to door racing you will need cage, circuit lisence, plus a whole new level of eqiupment.
In terms of car prep simple list for sprints would be
- roadworthy (tires, brake pads etc)
- no fluid leaks at all
- 1kg fire ext, mounted in metal bracket
- firm seat, and min 3 point belt
- Blue triangle on body near battery
- Cover the +Ve terminal on your battery (rubber or tape, or in a battery box)
- clean out the car
- Double throttle springs, dual carbs will require one extra on each carb.
- helmet, non flammable clothing (ie jeans, and cotton or wool top) and non synthetic shoes (leather)
Then it depends on the club, some will be strict in certain areas , ie oil leaks, other may be strict on the seat moutning, while others arn't, it can also change event to event.....
Best bet go to event, find an offical and ask!

Mick theres a small fee and form you need to complete
Mick058 ·
IS there much planned for the future Dave?
Whats the advantage of joining with the club in regards to CAMS?
amazeer ·
you cant have a cams licence without a cams club membership. thats the advantage.
As soon as your club membership runs out, your licence is invalid and you cant compete. Dont need to stay with the particular club you were in when you got your licence, you just have to have a membership of any cams club.
Get your licence through the club, that way you get a 30 day interim licence. You dont get that if you deal directly with CAMS. Also, dont pay for your licence now unless you plan on doing an event in the next couple of weeks. Wastes your money. And your licence renewal will be up at the same time every year, forever, even if it lapses completely. ie if you get your licence now 21/8/08 and lose interest it will expire in 21/8/09. You then want to run at Raleigh in 2010 so reapply in July 2010. That licence will also expire on 21/8/2010. You will only get one month out of it.
And if you have any medical issues, regardless of whether it will affect your driving, dont tick the box. Sure, if you have an accident due to that issue and they prove it was pre-existing you wont have your PAI, but if you tick the box, chances are you wont be racing.
Anything with 4 wheels that can safely go/stop/steer can race. Your car will go in 2D sports sedans regardless of any other mods because of the fibreglass. If you had a 36hp oval with fibreglass you should go into S/S. A barndoor should go into sports sedans if it is missing a bumper. Any engine swaps non flat 4 vw will also put you S/S.
CAMS L2S licence fee is $95. That will allow you to compete in hillclimbs super sprints motorkhanas, khanacross.... anything that you are likely to want to do in the near future. EXCEPT that if you want to go to Wakefield Park you may need to get one of their AASA licences depending on who is running the event there.
Mick058 ·
Sweet, sounds good - nothing planned just yet, but may aswell get the forms etc.
Dave, do you have them in electronic form? Or Steve? So i can apply through the club.

i thought cams licence was ok for wakefield, it was last year? doesnt mean it hasn't changed since though.
speedster356 ·
Private practise (off the street speed days) at Wakefield will require a Wakefield license. Think it's about $100 and is valid for 12 months.
