FK87 Experiences ?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/71235/fk87-experiences

55slug ·

I am going to be running one in the 2442 Im building. I was planning on running 10.5:1 compression.

Just interested to hear of any combos anyone has run and their take on this cam ? Ive read that it likes compression, but how much ? trying to keep it semi streetable.

Combo is 88 x 94, 044 wedgeports 46 x 37, IDAs and 1 3/4 exhaust. FK87.

dangerous ·

Love it.
Depending on a few factors it comes on at around 4000.(like a two stroke bike)
Prob advance it a little and hope your highway RPM does not coincide with where it "comes on"

It will work well with that comp.

Rod Richardson has that in his engine with 1.4's.

grogy ·

hi, i ran one in a 2180, 48s, 11.5 comp, on the street, and it was nice. smooth power and streetable, came on hard at 5000rpm

matberry ·

Got one in my 2332, 44x38, 1.4's [.585"], 48's, 9.5 : 1. Smooth as all the way from idle to redline.
Sorry Dave, but comes on a bit earlier in my combo, about 3300.
Love it !!

dangerous wrote:Depending on a few factors
Rocker ratio, port size and venturi size can be factors.

Smaller 'amounts' will move the start point earlier but will limit outright power.

Sick68VW ·

Im running a fk89 in a 2007 with 1.4s with 10.5.1
heads are 42x37.5 power comes on at 4400 all the to 8200 but i think with these sort of cams ()high lift) you have to get your gearbox ratios right ...

what revs is the redline ?

westi ·

why such a small cam.lol
i haven't run that cam but it sound's like a good combo.
playing around with cam timing and carby's will get it doing what ever you want it to.
everyone's idea of streetable is different.
my combo is loverly on the street, but it's proberly no good for the next guy.

55slug ·

Box is a 1.21 4th with 4.12 r and p, 215/65 15 tyres. It will be at about 4000 rpm at 100k. Sounds like im going to have to break the law or drive like a granny.

7000 atm

Craig Torrens ·

cheers, sounds like a good cam 👍

hellbugged ·

from the berg catalouge...........

"For large cc engines with GB 870 or larger heads, 48 IDA's and 1-5/8" or larger exhaust. Can be for an extra hot street car that has close ratio gears or one of our 5 speeds. Not quite an all out race cam. Used in some mini stock or road racecars. 320 duration, 0.390" lift at cam."

Sick68VW ·

my 4th gear is a 1.33 with a 4.125 it revs high on the high way but awesome round the streets.

westi ·

got rego yet steve.
street meet is calling you.

Sick68VW ·

If all goes well brad i should have rego by wensday and then out to the street meet will your car be ready in time..

55slug ·

Does anyone have timing events for this cam ? - I have no cam card...

Do you still need this, sorry was offline for a few days.

66deluxe ·

What lifters are you guys using for your type 1 engines thats compatible with the engle, cams, everytime i buy one i have to source my own lifters, with the type 4 cams i get matched lifters included with the cam.

Damo.

matberry ·

I've been using Scat with no failures yet. With proper breakin blah blah

Sorted, thanks for the offer.

😵hi from phillippines! im planning to build a 2176cc engine!!!! i want it to use it for a weekend warrior bassis what do u suggest what cam should i use?compression to be set?what valves size do i need? what carb size do i use? hope you guys can help me out..... tnx!😊

cnfabo ·

come on racers help the philipino out.. isnt it to busy to have a street stormer over there, lol.....

matberry ·

A few questions first

What type of driving...full race, partial race, hot street, mild street??
What octane of fuel is available there?
What type of maintenance schedule are you up to?
What expected hp are you after?
How many miles are you expectingting it to last?
What fuel economy are you expecting?
What car, gear ratios and cooling system?

reub ·

I look forward to experiencing the FK87 myself👍

matberry ·

Ask Coletrickle what he thinks of the 2332 with fk87. With the right package they are a great cam

coletrickle ·

I've had my 2332 Matt Berry engine in the car for about 5weeks now,fk87,9.8-1,48,s man i absolutely love it!It idles at 800rpm and drives slow so good,it's like the best tuned stocker you've ever driven with 141hp@w!Merges like a motorbike runs real cool on 98 octane had 9 runs at the drags all in the 13's.It's nice and quiet at idle but since "COL LOOK" is all about speed it's stripped out and it's pretty loud inside at 100/3400rpm.So far i'm over the moon with my new engine and box in fact if anybody is intrested in a ride if i make it to warrick come and see me.

matberry ·

Ah Haa. Ask and you shall receive.
Cheers Col, couldn't have said it better👍

matberry ·

^^^will this be deleted???

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Can't see why it should. Col is stating his opinion on "someone's" handywork and is happy with his experience!!

matberry ·

Man I dont believe it.....why was that post deleted....WTF

Craig Torrens ·

what post ?? They are all there !

matberry ·

There was one above mine with the arrows that was tongue in cheek bag against Col by Brisdubba. Next thing 'they' deleted it. Again ....WTF

BrisDubba ·

Matt,

I deleted my own post thinking that I didnt want to hijack it or send it off track, just having a joke with Col that is all. I actually thought you were suggesting to me that I should delete it, for that reason.

So this time at least it was an innocent deletion.

Cheers

Peter

matberry ·

Wow dude what's going on.....LOOKOUT.....they're at the window.....ah no....only my reflection....thought it was them tooo.

I'd never suggest to delete a dig at Crazy Col....would I??

55slug ·

Crikey its taken me a while... engine is nearly there, looking forward to driving it soon....

Hoping to run some 12s this season...

55slug ·

After first start jitters, and stripping it down again, a week later its all up and running really well. Drags next Friday down here at Meremere weather permitting... fingers crossed for 12s.

matberry ·

Cool mate. Well done, good luck on the track.

grogy ·

hi, how about a time guestimate comp, i say 12.9 1st run and into mid12s if tyres stick ok.

coletrickle ·

13.20 but i don't know about car set up and tires radials?drag radials? or slicks?

55slug ·

M and H Dots, quaiffe... ill be very happy with a 12 of any sort... lets not forget my tuning ability will play a big part, spending the weekend with the wideband,,, hope im good !!

grogy ·

wow, if tracks good, it should launch hard..

fish26 ·

first run out......13.8, with seat time thats a lethal combo, did you mod the carbs for friendlier street use?

OLD-DOG ·

Fish 26...The purpose of these straps on my rig is to limit body rise at speed-200ks & upwards. They mimimise
bump steer tendencies as they reduce tie rod angle changes. One has to be careful on the set up
that you don't rob the vehicle of suspension absorbancy. Its like every modification full of some sort of compromise..Ross.

Hey Ross, I think you posted in the wrong thread mate. Thats why I said they should only be used on faster cars, stabilizing the front end.

grogy ·

am i an optimist with my 12.9? i hope the ida vents are real big with jets to suit the top end. from past experience with similar setups in both my friends super and my manx, 12s should not be too hard especially since its big cc. all i say is go slug55 its gonna be one fun bug

55slug ·

fish26 wrote:first run out......13.8, with seat time thats a lethal combo, did you mod the carbs for friendlier street use?
I was running 13.7 s on radials (1.9 60 fts) with the old 2276, full interior, with a 5 speed, missing third gear pretty badly. Carbs are two hole progression, not modded 1.21 4th ( 5 speed now a 4) so it wont see much street action...
Heads are 46 x 37 ultra wedgeports...
Car is reasonably well set up... like you say down to launching it well and getting it down the track...

fish26 ·

its gonna be a hairy, scary ride mate, enjoy.

dangerous ·

If you get the tune sorted, I think you should have no trouble getting into the 12.9s
hang on ...11.9s.

55slug ·

Yep the tune.... I have 42 and 44mm vents, running 42s at this stage F7, 65 idle, 120idle holders, 175 main,190 airs. Will work it from there... After the Friday meet next week, there is a T and T the week after on the Sunday... see how I go, and what I break.

matberry ·

55slug wrote:... see how I go, and what I break.
Ahh....spoken like a true racer.👍

grogy ·

i think i used to run 44 vents 195 mains 220 airs ........
but i think i ran f11 emulsion and 55 idles on 2180 same cam slightly smaller heads n intake valve, but 11-1 comp. hopefully weather will be good for u

12.872@166 ks.1.85 60 ft, made it to the C3 (NA 4,6 and rotors) final and got beaten by a rotor... Im pretty stoked, and theres lots more in it yet !!
vid of the 12.90 run... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uhXMB7oxf4 sounds pretty rough at the top of third, more tunuing required !!!
Launching at 3800. Have a fair amount of suspension work to do to get out of the hole faster, and it was a bit loose at the top end on some runs.

vassy66T1 ·

Nice one 👍
Healthy amount of wheelspin off the line

Awesome effort!

Be good to see how fast it is with correct mixtures,
andless spin off the starts.

Third gear sounds like it goes for ever!

55slug ·

Yeah, im changing into 4th maybe 100 feet from the line... not the best, Im pretty sure its a 1.48 3rd, 1.21 4th... 388 r and p

Im thinking some $$ on the dyno might be well spent

r/t in the final was .075 (vs. .233) - Im convinced its due to the time i put in with the kids on the playstation

grogy ·

great stuff, good time first time out. agree wit dave too much wheel spin, [not sure how u do better without slicks] plus if u can launch higher revs off start without spinnin u should get 4th earlier

Great stuff mate, I was a full 1 sec off your time, square up the rear wheels @ launch and stiffen the front so it don't get loose, what suspension and box are you running now?

Once again, props; it takes a lot of work to run in the 12s.

PS. So what do you think of the FK87 and when does it come on in your combo?

vassy66T1 ·

The healthy part about the wheel spin is the gear box and axles will last for ages.

Stock rear shocks, IRS, T2 CVs, Front end has dropped spindles and slightly narrowed. The dropped spindles are getting changed before the next outing (2 weeks).

I was running M and H dot legal slicks, couldnt get them to stick as well as I would like, running 18lbs air in them... It was pretty cold though, and those runs were close to midnight...

Craig Torrens ·

Awesome result 👍

coletrickle ·

Nice!So are you happy with the fk87?I'm real happy with my 2332 done over 7000miles now.Raced at the nostalgias,j19,and warrick and a couple of street meets and some after hours testing.I've been fiddling with the tune ever since and prior to last friday i was totally happy with how it drove slow or fast it would pull from 33ish mph in top(700mm trucktyres). After running 98 octane since 0 miles i've now swapped over to 91 octane and CANNOT BELIVE THE DIFFRENCE!!I thought it was smooth before now it will pull from 27ish mph in top it has a lot more power on partial throttle and with full throttle it revs out so much harder and faster and doesn't seem to nose over near 6600.Can't wait to get to the track it feels so much faster than before when it ran 13.17@101.2mph,60ft of 1.77.Maybe a 12 second street car christmas thats what i'm wishing for!

hellbugged ·

interesting findings there Col.......you mean better with 91 octane?

what brand fuel you been using.....same or irregular companies?

coletrickle ·

Either caltex premium or shell v power.tried 95 ethanol blend ran a tiny bit better but shit milage and ran a bit hotter according to the hand-o-mometer.Have tried 7-11 91 octane and now bp both unreal compared to the 98 premium. On partial throttle its like its a 5 cyl engine and the progression is so smooth i havn't changed a thing except the fuel still running 30 degrees timing no pinking no running on even today after driving in peak hour traffic and it was hot had to be at least 34degrees gave it a real good seeing to and it just screamed thru the gears no problems. So yes 91 octane fuel in my 9.8-1 2332 =🤪power who wooda thunk it.Got me thinking in a diffrent direction now, gonna get the a/f meter tomorrow and see what its doing.

matberry ·

Col, here is the dyno pull of your engine with air fuel being around 12.4 and peak lean at 13.5. Typically the dyno operator only really gets it happening 4000 rpm upwards.

This was with 98 and 32* total. You know the jetting.

FK87 is really nice, now I have a better tune in it, I think the 88 crank helps a lot down low in smoothing the powerband a bit. In the last week I have changed a couple of things, found loose inlet manifold nut on cylinder #3 (it was leaning out) and changed the wiring to fuel pump after noticing an audible drop in tone when the lights were on ... my dodgy wiring... and added a bypass oil filter holder (jaycee). At least now I can get repeatable results on the wideband.
Engine will be out next week, and onto the dyno next weekend. Have a lot of stuff to try out to get the max out of it ! Its good to have a mate who works for an engine builder !!

55slug ·

Quick update...Ran 1.75 sixty foots last night, best time was 12.78@168 ks. More seat time required to get used to the launch side of things and get some consistency in it,

Craig Torrens ·

Good time and 60ft.....I thought 140hp would have given a higher terminal speed though.

matberry ·

Craig, you have to allow for the overall weight, that includes the driver.😂😂😂

I think it ran 104mph in matt's car,
and Cole was using his "witches Brew" that week end too,
so I doubt it was making 140 on that day.

coletrickle ·

Yes it should go a bit faster than 101 mph, like dave said i was running some special fuel that day that didn't help and my car is so not lowered so i'm calling very bad aerodynamics for some of the "loss" westie has promised a set of dropped spindles so we'll see if that helps.

Ooooh dropped spindles Col, about time, you wont regret it. Soon you might be all one colour😂.

Are you adding kero to your 91 yet??

55slug ·

Spent time on an Engine Dyno on the weekend (drgouk's place of work). Made 196 Hp and 178 ft/lb, with belt and muffler on. Started at 187 Hp so we made some good gains.
Have been chasing a valve lash problem with the #1 exhaust, found that the pushrod was eating the lifter cup... so Im stripping it down now... Im confident it will make over 200 hp with the valve train set up properly.
Interestingly we found more horspower with 42mm vents than the 44s that I had in originally...

I am running a steel billet cam - any suggestions as to lifters ? I was looking at the CB lightweight jobbies ?

matberry ·

Recently been using the light Scat with no problems (and removed two engines worth for inspection too)

dangerous ·

I used the old black mahle lifters with my steel billet cam, but they are heavy.
The advantage though,
is that Autocraft make a hardened steel lifter cup that slides into the mahle lifter.

55slug ·

Dave, I have lost about .080" in one lifter in the cup area. I have some of the Autocraft cups on the way. Just wondering wether these may be a fix for my existing lifters ? Only one has this issue...

dangerous ·

These should do the trick if they fit inside your particular lifter brand.

55slug ·

Thanks for the tip on these they worked out perfectly. Cheapest fix ever at only $60 Us !

55slug ·

Got back to the strip tonight, ran a 12.501 off the trailer, only made three runs but got to a 12.437 @ 170 ks. Shifting at about 6500. 60 foots in 1.654, 1.658. Im really happy with it. It was cooling down so probably a 12.3 in it yet. I have an oiling issue to sort out, idiot light coming on when backing off over the line... I was running the level at the bottom of the dipstick, and have changed a few things, so need to work that out...
