Barry there is a difference in talking in an accent, and talking crap because you're too lazy to speak properly...馃槵

ancientbugger 路

I spent years in typesetting and a lot of the job was as a reader (printers on here will know what I'm on about, spell check is something new) and all this sms spelling drives me to tears. I must say though (tho) that cockneys are probably the worlds worst speakers of the Queens English but I definitely agree with you.

donn 路

Kinda think it is writen that way with a bit of tongue in cheak, maybe.

pod 路

i`d rather listen to a cockney than someone talking like that^^^

Joel 路

i feel like punching babies when kids start talking like that

J BOMB 路

AnnaBee 路

馃槀 Haha!

But having laughed at him, I wouldn't mind being able to do those acrobatics...

this has gone of on a tangent. I have 2 pet hates. Using the word 'like', for things that arent like. And turning the word 'versus' into a verb.

My 10yr old will come home and say how a "party was cool cos there was like 20 people there" Leaving out my uncertainty of using 'was" or "were" I ask her if there were about 18 to 22 people. She looks at me as if I am stupid old fart and says no, there were 20. But why would you abbreviate words and spelling only to add in unnecessary words? Even worse is that I have noticed doing it myself and also correcting the wife.

What is worse worser is "Versing". 10yr old will be looking at her netball draw. It says Shellharbour versus Berkeley. So she will come out with "We are versing Berkeley" Again I am a stupid old fart for suggesting that it would be better to try and beat them at netball than sing them a song or read them a poem.

And dont you mention "cool man", "dig it", "chill", "lush", "pissah" from 70's 80's. That was compleetely different.

Actually I think the "like" thing came from the hunter valley + scone areas. Everyone on my mothers side of the family who are all in late 60's or older use it but they tack it on to the end of sentences not chuck it in the middle.

Jay_1965vw 路

Argh 'versing'... yes.

The kids I was teaching a couple of years ago were saying it too, I wonder where it came from?

Phil74Camper 路

Tch, these youngsters today, eh? She goes, she goes, she goes, like, she just goes. My seven year old hasn't started that stuff yet, but if she does I will be ready! I have hever heard of 'versing' - maybe it's like 'medaling' in the Olympics (which I hate)

I used to umpire junior cricket, where my two pet hates were calling individual matches 'games'. Ponting says that all the time - I hate it. They are matches, not games.

Also the players coming out to hit the ball - they are not batters. Batter is what you have on fish! In cricket you have BATSMEN.

ancientbugger 路

Wow! I think we need a different thread for this. There's a difference between slang and grammar and this thread proves it. As I said earlier I was born and raised in Central London but as I worked in the print industry was made very aware of correct grammar (even went to a grammar school in Brixton, if anyone here knows of it?), but speaking English is completely different thing. I still have my cockney accent after 20 years of living in Oz but my sons who were all born here all have Aussie accents but my middle son for some reason has a distinct Queensland way of speaking where he ends every sentence with 'but'. I annoy him by asking "but what?". It's the spelling that drives me mad, things like 'furtherest' instead of 'furthest', even Australia deciding whether to use English spelling or the Americam equivalent not just a mishmash of both i.e. the colour of my neighbors' car'. Things like that drive me absolutely bonkers!!! Don't even get me on about volkswagon bettles, if I see those spelling errors again I'll be writing to my MP or to the Education Department馃榾

Phil74Camper 路

Getting back on the topic a bit, people have been mis-spelling 'volkswagon' since the 1950s. Even VW's own dealers do it sometimes in the newspaper classifieds. I don't think there's anything we can do except try to set the example. I edit the Club Veedub magazine Zeitschrift, so I have the 'pleasure' of correcting grammar and spelling. I use the Australian style guide, which recommends UK spellings (colour, harbour, etc).

I think a few US VW expressions are here to stay - decklid, Bug, Bus - but then we use UK ones too. Bay Window (I hate that one) and 'Mk1 Golf' come to mind. At least we don't refer to fenders or wings yet - thank goodness they are still mudguards.

I thought one QLD thing was ending sentences with 'ay!' but then the Kiwis do that too, ay. They don't do it in Sydney but.

amazeer 路

I thought of another word an old gf used to excess. "scuzzy"... nothing to do with todays scuzzy-scsi

Matt Ryan 路

disorientated instead of disoriented is my pet hate. Don't know where "versing" came from but my kids were using it in the '90's and it used to drive me nuts.

There is no excuse online, when it's possible to spell check as you type. I use firefox browser which has a add on "Australian English" dictionary.

Matt.

Thank you - this thread has suddenly made me feel more at home here!

greasykitchen 路

My pet hate is poor spelling and grammar, and lack of punctuation, especially on the internet - sure we should make some allowances, but if you can't undestand what is being said, then what's the point?

On the other hand I've been at University most of my adult life and my spelling is getting worse (and I still couldn't tell you what an adjective is!馃槈).

馃槑

Phil74Camper 路

I just remembered another one of my pet hates - 'clever' journalists writing reports on the VW Golf using golfing puns.

Eg. 'New Golf Tees Off'. 'Play A Round With The New Golf' etc. Hardeharhar.

They think they are so clever. The VW Golf is not named after the sport, but after the Gulf Stream (Golf Strom in German). We once put an article in the club mag that tried to take the piss out of this:

"The latest Golf tee'd off this morning. What a fantastic driver! In a fair way, it is not a handicap. It really rolls and will not putt putt. It easily avoids the traps and the bunkers. It feels like a Caddy. Take a slice, it will hook you in. Play a round - you will feel like a good stroke with your wood afterwards."

Didn't stop people doing it though.

This is turning into a grumpy old men thread.

Another example of what irks me came as junkmail today from a carpet and upholstery cleaner.

Apparently they specialise in carpet and upholstery cleaning, leather upholstery, tile and grout cleaning, vertical blinds, flooded carpet removal and 1 more that I cant think of.

Is it possible to specialise in all of the things that you do?
