long story...I've got a 8mm headstud thats been welded together to lengthen it and it's snapped right at the weld. I need it to be longer cause the stupid bastard who pulled the thread out of the case didn't do the correct thing and put a helicoil in to fix it. All they did was tap further into the case and then lengthen the head stud to suit. Wahey! not. So now I need to make a longer headstud, what are they made out of? I'm fairly certain that they're not mild steel and if they're hardened I think I can make one from a screwdriver we've got here. Anyway I need to know what they're made of ASAP. Thanks.馃槑

ive just replaced mine with Scat chromemoly ones
they are obvoiusly made for stroker engines cos i had to cut them down for my 1776
heres what happens when there only made out of mild steel....
high tensile only way to do it properly

Try 4340, or 4140 material.
Or EN26 if they have it in that small diameter.
You can have it heat treated after machining, but for a basically mild engine
you can buy the material in a 'hardened and tempered' state,
and that should do.

In a perfect world the threads should be rolled to help prevent a failure,
but short of buying a whole set of aftermarket long studs(to only use one),
'turning' the thread should get you out of trouble.

Hi Boozer
My memory is getting dim so I cant remember which stud, but the one deeper head stud was standard from the factory with 8mm head studs, where as the 10mm ones were all surface mounted.

don't worry guys I've changed plans again. They've defintely tapped further into the case and done a shit job of it. We didn't feel good trying to make a new headstud and hoping that it was gonna hold in the case. So I'm gonna put the kombi motor in and replace the case. But thanks anyways!
