hi there,
if got a 69 baja bug with 30 inch wheels on the back and i wanna upgrade my motor ive got a 1600 block and wanna take it out to either 1835cc or 1912cc would 1835cc not be enough or will i have to go to 1912cc plz help Rob

matberry ·

To go 1835 or 1915 you need to rebuild your engine, not just upgrade... so be prepared to spend a few $$$.

What condition is your 1600 ?

Maybe just get it going better?

Craig Torrens ·

Rob, best just to go straight to the 94mm P&B (1915cc)> Its the same $$ and amount of work, so you may as well just bypass the 1835. Beside not many people building 1835's anymore.

vw54 ·

the 94mm barrels n pistons are the way to go but you will need 044 heads that have enough meat ( alloy casting ) around the chambers to allow them to be machined out to 94mm stock heads dont have enough alloy in this area

and besides you will need bigger inlet and exhaust valves as well

gavandrob ·

thanks for the help i was thinking of going 1915cc anyway my 1600cc engine ive got has new pitons and rings and a zenith carby but i still struugle and want more power the block ive got will be putting new bearings through it wat else will i need to do

in regaurds to 044 heads wat are they are they 1600 kombi heads or wat how can u tell

thanks rob

That said - i run a 1916 with stock heads 🙄

bond ·

where are you located?

gavandrob ·

u run 1915cc with stock heads? huh u havent had any problems with it have u?

im located in victoria, latrobe valley region

VWCOOL ·

Stock DP heads work with 1916 - they will need machining for the bigger barrel, but no other mods.

76bug ·

hi gavandrop i have an excelent set of 043 heads stock valves bored for 94mm barrels for sale, if your interested.

gavandrob ·

will i need to do anything to the motor will the ports be big enough to produce the most power etc...

vw54 ·

good luck using stock heads

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

My brother has a set of 94mm pistons and barrels that have done like 2000km or less for sale. Pistons have brand new rings and a second hand set. Pistons can also be used with a stroker crank. Pm me if you are interested.

Dave

Pretty sure Jak's motor use to run 040's.
Cant say that didnt work

Be VERY surprised if Stan Pobjoy uses 044's on his "base" 1916's

Admittedly 044's are better but 040/043 will work

hellbugged ·

i make plenty of HP with my 040's...........but they aint STOCK

onetrackwonder ·

Maybe you already have enough horsepower and you need tranny mods to suit the 30 inch wheels, cheers Greg

Two 1916s in my shed and the stock DP heads are fine. It's true some DP heads have less metal around the combustion chamber (liek one of mine) and as such can't be machined for high comp ratios (ie: too much for ULP) without breaking through to the fins

A nice torquey 1916 would be good in an off-road vehicle but with tall tyres, a Baja will benefit more from lower gearing than more power

yep thats what happened to mine had big valves and nice port job then machine to up comp and to 94 and went through the fins

Mick058 ·

yeh, ive got stock heads on my 1916 - so far so good.

Stan Pobjoy has been using them (and still does) for the last 25 years.......................and a couple of thousand 1916's later !!

You just need to know what your looking for when sourcing the heads........some standard heads have the right castings others don't.

Pity you did the valves and port job before checking Dave !!

no they were cut for 92s which i never used so decided to cut for 94 n busted through there carnt be much meat using stocks after cutting must be very thin

Craig Torrens ·

use the right heads and there's plenty of meat 😉
