Automatic Beetle question...

This may be a stupid question but can someone explain to me how the Automatic beetle is driven... do you simply put it in D and go? or do you shift the gears clutch free?? I've been wondering for a while now

barls ·

shift the 3 gears with out putting a foot on a clutch pedal

MickH ·

You shift the gears "clutch free" so to speak...the clutch is automatic and changes itself. They are basically a 3 speed manual box with an automatic clutch, not a true automatic.

and dont leave your hand on the stick after changing

^^^ Absolutely! And no flopping the left leg around😂 . It's a vacuum circuit that controls the clutch mechanism and the gearstick has a contact "point" inside which electrically fires the system to cause clutch activation when you shift. Motivation is provided by an ATF circuit feeding a Torque Converter which fronts the gearbox.

Plenty of info on www.vwar.org about them.

the automatic Beetle does not have a " D " position or similar shifter as per a normal automatic marquee Its really a semi automatic and requires gear shifting without a clutch as per above

The Type 3 and Kombis have a normal shifter like other cars and have the " D " position

L, 1 & 2 is ur gears :P

clutch activated by contacts in you gear lever. so rather than putting your foot on the clutch, as soon as you put that hand on the gear stick, it goes.
Clutch slipping and engagment timing is tuned up and set, and is all automatic. its just the gears u got to flick through.
