How about those nifty intake louvers on each rear fender side?
How did that get accomplished???
Lots of fresh air......and fine Aussie dust zooming right into the engine compartment.
Love to see some pics of what that looks like! 😵💫🙄

looks like you scored the original seats also from one of your pictures!
I think you have done really well ❗

how`s sunday sound? haha im sure we cant scavenge parts form mine and yours.
some guy just messaged me on our carclub forum his dad just bought a 181 from bali heading there tomorrow night for a look might take some spare $$ with me haha
Joel ·
if ur gonna keep that engine be sure to ditch that remote oil cooler and fit back a standard one
that is one of the most stupidest setups right there
unless theres a fan on the other side which i highly doubt then the oil only gets cooled when on the move at decents speeds so when stopped idling or traveling slow it wond get air thro it especially thro those pissy side louvers
and other bad point is the hot air is just gonna come staight in to the engine bay off it only to be recirculated by the fan trying to cool the engine
all original oil coolers duct air out of the enginebay underneath
looks like a good score tho

Great news on the new purchase.
If the new one is KO587 and the earlier one you purchased was KO588 is sounds like consecutive KO #s residing with the same owner.
Now that would be a first.
Fancy owning two cars that rolled off a production line after each other from over 40 years ago.
Is KO587 a beige one with rollbar, flared guards and missing a motor/gearbox located in Spalding.

😂😂😂
58camper ·
No,
Did not see the Spalding vehicle. I only found out about it early last week through a fellow CB owner living in the Victorian Mallee. He had a look at it a couple of weeks ago and thought it abit overpriced. He walked away but then gave me the details for the Register..
I think he found another near White Cliffs in NSW which he is going to look at tomorrow which sounds like worse condition to KO587 but the $ are minimal.
They are still out there. Will update the Register with the new details

Have done a little research and KO0590 came off the production line at Clayton on the last day of May 1968 so both KO0587 and KO0588 would have been produced very close to the same end of May 1968 date.
I am still staggered two consecutive production numbered vehicles have the same owner.

Bill......I find this incredible too! Simply amazing.
I'm surprised the vehicle appears to be in better condition than I imagined.
Yeah, those fender flairs are a little goofy (they look to me to be cannibalized from a Bug), the seemingly intregal running boards don't do much for the look IMO, the bonnet edges look a little suspect, but overall I think it's not bad at all.
From the pics I don't see anything that would indicate serious problems with the rockers.
In the "spares" pic it looks like some useful goodies came with the deal.
Looks pretty reasonable to me.
SpLiTmEiStEr, I'm curious as to how much this purchase may have lightened your wallet?
Inquiring minds from across The Big Pond can't help but ask. 😉
Good find! Gives Graham more pics for his great pictorial project.
Please keep us up to date on the revival of this CB.

Just love those flares. Looks like the car should be running in the V8 Super Car series.
I also see there are two snorkel holes cut in the rear firewall which someone appeared to have bogged up.( Bet you spotted these Steve)
That is a great spare parts wall you have collected. Its amazing how things get used over the years.
I am really interested in the Chassis #s for both vehicles to see how close they may be.

SpLiTmEiStEr 😵💫
Wow........at this morning's exchange rate of 1 AUD = 0.640387 USD that is an incredible price!!! 1,500.00 AUD = 960.58 USD
That's just an incredible buy IMO.
Not that's its perfect by any means, but for what you got in exchange, I think that might just be the CB deal of at least the decade.
Keep us all updated on your progress.
1500 AUD.......my head is still spinning..... 😵💫 👍

p.s. Bill......I actually missed those "snorkel" holes.....thanks for pointing them out.....guess this means I'm not living up to my new nickname.....😉

Looks like your all set for a resto with a few parts to pick and choose from.
58camper ·
Splitmeister,
Can you let me have the chassis numbers for KO 587 AND KO 588. i am real interested to see how close the two chassis numbers are given the production numbers were consecutive.
countrybuggybill
58camper ·
Thanks for that. If one is on a Beetle pan it may still have the compliance plate under the dashboard. The Chassis # is stamped there as well.
I appreciate your help.
countrybuggybill.😎
58camper ·
Peter,
Thanks for the chasss # detail. In looking at those number I think KO 587 might be chassis # 118310130 as I saw the CB from Grenfell that was recently only Ebay for US$18K ( and did not sell) has Chassis # 118310120. It was KO 546.
This supports my thought that there was no great production plan to match chassis $s to KO #s as the vehicle went onto the production line. Consecutive KO's dont mean consecutive Chassis #s
Thanks again.

Hi All
Had a couple of productive days on the CB ("Sunny", based on the number plates & colour).Topped 36 degrees in Adelaide today so a bit of an ask to keep working instead of downing amber fluid.
Now back to bare shell: roll cage, lights, interior fittings etc all removed & packed away. Beetle guard flares have been removed & it looks great without them. Have completed removal of bolts holding pan to body & will separate the two next weekend (with Andrew's help). Can then start on cleaning up the pan. Pan halves are pretty solid. Bit of rust to cut out from LHS; couple of holes to fill but all up a great starting point for resto.
Aim is to have this car ready for the Volks Enthusiasts Club of SA's "Ratex Rally", scheduled for August 2010. When the pan is done, will shift focus to body. Need to re-profile the wheel arches to get them back to standard lines.
Will certainly appreciate any tips from any of the CB community on what to look for and pitfalls to avoid (the poor old T34 is sitting forlornly waiting for attention & can't get started til the CB is - or both of them are - completed.
Hope to be able to put a few progress shots up on the forum.

ptoome,
Welcome to the CB Forum.
You have come to the right place for info and support while doing your resto.
How about some pics of you progress?
I don't think you mentioned the KO number......I'm sure Graham would have been asking very soon about this......but I have bet him to the punch on this vehicle. 😂

Ztnoo Steve,
What are you smokling over there in the US. Maybe it just the cold weather has got to you.
This yellow CB is the one where consecutive KO numbers are owned by the same guy- even the chassis numbers almost match. Have a read of the prior posts on this thread.
You did not beat 11Cab to the punch on this one.
BTW, It is really good to see the work being done on this yellow one and it brings another one back on the road whioch is what it is all about.

uuhhhhhhh.....I guess I just won Space Cadet of the Week Award here at the forum 😵💫
Sorry for my faux paus.
The poster I answered was new here at the Forum......so it wasn't clear to me he was talking about the CBs in the thread.
I just assumed he was talking about another vehicle and thus my confusion.
The only thing I smoke....now.....are some small Swisher Sweet cigars I gave up the wacky stuff long, long ago.
I will be 61 on the 21st......maybe that's the problem 😂
Fortunately for me, Obama's health care plan will fix that and I'll be dementia and Alzheimer's free at no cost to me. 😂

I don't see much of a problem, sleeves are welded over...

My CB is now my daily drive. The best decision I've made was putting it on the balljoint / IRS pan.
ztnoo ·
It seems to me a lot of a CB owner's focus would be on what the intended primary use of the vehicle would be.
It you plan on slogging around in the "boonies", short here in the US for boondocks (meaning basically for off pavement, open country driving), then having the original T2 gear reduction boxes which limits top end velocity, but affords some real low end, slow, labored work, would be the thing to have your CB equipped with.
If however you are always, or nearly so, zooming down paved roads, playing imagined F1 jockey, then the ball joint/IRS rear suspension would be a much better choice.
John, how about a road test performance report on that 2009 CB of yours???
Given your Formula Vee background, something tells me you might be doing some real tearing about in that beauty.
Have you been to the top end yet?
Had the thing wound out yet to really see what she's capable of???
Since your CB is set up for the street, I suspect you have tweaked that stock suspension a bit........not that anyone else would know......until they can't stay with you in a corner. 😂 👍
Regards,
Steve

That's KO 861. I've got the KO tag off it. It was outside the scrap dealers yard here in Whyalla a while back. I had no room to store one that rough, couldn't let the scrappy have the tag. Then I see it's gone and the rehister says it was "saved from the crusher". Reckon even John would have trouble with that one. You can have the tag if you're going to rebuild it. You've got a motor at your place that belongs to me so we'll be seeing each other soon. There's a couple of other pictures of it in the gallery.
Cheers

I read this story ages ago and thought, like others that it was special to have 2 KO's in a row.
Just to add a little interest to the chance of someone owning 2 numbers in a row, I have just checked a CB that I have had in storage for 25 odd years.
Amazingly, it is KO 589.
There is now an opportunity for someone to have 3 in a row.
I still have so many projects and not enough time
I have pics now but will need to send to someones email as uploading on this site defies me. I can't even workout photobucket etc.
oh no way. you guys are going to be the death of me. after spending a week solid on ko587 - with regular walks over to 588 to check how thungs go - you go and post about ko589. i just have to work out how close to a divorce i would be if ko589 came here to join its sisters. i'm going back to the shed to cry while i do some more wiring and ponder over the possibilities.......
58camper ·
Peter,
Its just another little bit of work to do in your spare time. Would be something special. You might be lucky in that Grazza has not yet declared if KO589 is for sale.
If he makes that decision then there is some thinking to do that might end up in tears

Progress on KO587 has been rapid the last few weeks, with me starting to finally feel that it is getting close to completion. Here's a couple of pics showing where she is up to. You will note that there are many "non-standard" items. Starting as I did with a car that had been so heavily cut up (flared guards, IRS etc) there was no way I could ever bring this old girl back to original. So I have made a few subtle changes: Bumpers are black not grey but that matches roll bar; Seats are high back buckets - what a crime; the glove box is made from a salvaged instrument panel with holes welded up - hides the stereo and CB (speakers are outdoor units mounted under the seats; extra fuse box under cargo tray for power to accessories & alarm/immobiliser. Just trying to organise tyres this week and plumb up fuel lines etc (fuel hard line and throttle cable tube were both blocked solid). Then a lot of small tidy up jobs and will be soon ready to try firing up the engine (1500 single port with mild cam.

Some pics. Will post some more when I have wheels/tyres organised.

I worry about this site, seen this "no pictures" issue before. Now I worry about my pictures. Seems I'll have to become a Photo Bucket user.

Hi Bill. We had quite an impatient wait for KO589 to get here. It was pretty exciting dropping her off ther trailer. Managed to squeeze it in behind 587 - not sure if it can be next or if I make good on my long overdue promise to get to type 34. Here is a pic of 587 with 589 in the background. We will try to line the 3 of them up for a group photo some time soon.Have organised tyres this week and will have them on Mon. Still waiting for seals (windscreen, bonnet & bootlid) to arrive and hope to get them on soon. Pete
ptoome ·
Have been busy on KO587 again. Ordered windscreen bonnet & boot seal from Spectrum rubber just before Xmas. They arrived at last so I fitted the seals and installed the windscreen. I did not have the original windscreen pivot brackets so copied the ones from the drive side of KO588. This has the mirror arm mount. I now have a pair which allows me to L & R side mirrors. For this aim I ordered a pair of the round stainless items used on splitties. They mounted up really well and look the part.
I had one windscreen wiper arm with ball joint on it and one plain. Scrounged up a set of twin carb linkages and an old carbie; then removed the ball from the carb and welded it to the 2nd wiper arm. Then, cut the carb linkage in two, made up a joiner from a length of copper tube and fitted it between the two wiper arms. The wipers now operate in the correct manner - with the motor driving the RH wiper and the linkage moving the LHS.
Have also managed to sort out selection of tyres. Wanted to stick to rubber with similar rolling diameter and keep track as close as possible (original spec has rear narrower than front but with IRS teh difference on 587 is compounded). Have ened up with 4.5" standard rims on front with 185-80 15 on front and 5" rims on rear with Toyo off road rubber in 205 70 15. Circumference comes up pretty close to one another. With rims all painted up in black & tryes fitted it looks great.

I'm guessing it'll be making its debut appearance at DOVW? 🙂

For those interested in number plates and keeping them correct for the period, I have been lucky enough to score a new plate for KO587. I was able to capitalise on the re-release of the "R" series alphanumeric plates which were in use here in South Australia when the country buggies were released. For a small sum - $75 - I have scored "RKO587". I picked it up on Friday and the plate now adorns KO587. Its a great link to the heritage of the CBs and is a good play on numbers that those familiar with country buggy history will get.
