https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/71664/vw-warwick-2008-all-systems-are-go-driver-list-included

VWMA Editor ·

Hi All,

All systems are go!

The final driver entry list is 74! Quite impressive. The weather looks good, the final preparations are almost complete, and I did manage to get my engine back in (today)!

One last announcement - for all those concerned about good track commentary keeping them informed and up to date with the latest VW Warwick weekend goss and results, that has all been taken care of thanks to Dave Birchall volunteering to take the microphone!! Thanks Dave.

See you on the track (and don't forget your gate passes and Tappet Cover Racers).

Cheers

So, will many others be burning the midnight oil to get their cars done for Warwick like me?

I will start stripping down the oval tomorrow for a quick repaint (had a bit of leftover paint so thought I'd give it a quick lick). Rod has kindly loaned me his 1916 that was in the chop last year for me to use this time around...so that has to go in after the respray, fortunately nothing else major for the oval as everything else works (hopefully!).

Pending time I am going to try and put together something a little different that should give everyone a laugh if it gets finished in time....will be super low budget but time may be against me! If it doesn't get done I'll throw up some pics if I conceed defeat, but for now I'll be having a few late nights in the next three weeks!

Al

Anyone else?

hellbugged ·

yeah Al, me too as usual🙅............either a new gearbox strapped to the 1776, along with Craigy bars, line locker and usual pre road trip maintainence or finish the hellVWrx fire damages,re-spray,find trailer and tow vehicle........can't wait!

vw54 ·

good to see you there Damio

LOWBUG ·

Mmmmm should be some nice surprises, be nice to be their this year, last year I was driving a wheelchair

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

i have one very dirty and neglected bus with no engine... yet. hopefully this weekend it will all be together and in the car. then check the brakes and start on the rest of the car......

dangerous ·

Well the excitement is building rapidly for this event.

I am entered, and engine is back together with a little more compression.

Still building the 1/8 mile tranny....among other things.
Gearing is set to do 8540 at 100mph.

westi ·

were's the volks porn pic's dave

dangerous ·

Only tranny porn.
Engine porn pics were up last month.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I have entered so no turning back now!!

Craig do you have a preliminary competitors list??

Dasdubber ·

Here is my oval as of tonight - just started the prep for a quickie respray....luckily no major problems to fix and I will be just prepping the existing paint rather than going back to bare metal (will do that one day!). After paint i need to get Rod's 1916 in there....and try to finish another bug which we'll hopefully debut at Warwick if the planets and stars align for us (ie. if time doesn't beat us!). Lots of late nights ahead 🙂

Al

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

you're a machine Al!!!!!!

don't spose you'll have time to give my bus a quick coat of paint!! there's a lot missing since it was last on the road!!

VWMA Editor ·

I'll post the weekend before when I'm compiling the final list for the race director - saves doing it twice. Yesterdays count was 42 entries!

There is only one week left for entry to VW Warwick. This is also the mad rush week, so don't leave it too late if you intend on competing this year.

Dasdubber ·

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:don't spose you'll have time to give my bus a quick coat of paint!!
That's a negative Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.

Would love to mate, but will be struggling to get everything else done in time unfortunately 🙂

matberry ·

Entered today.....should be a good turn out.

Who's ready already?

fullnoise ·

Nice one Alan "Just a quick resparay!"

What's the colour code?

I just need to replace an the front oil cooler, a cluch cable (just in case), a couple of oil lines the usual tappet adjustment and oil change.

A few months ago I had grand plans of IDAs, T-bars instead of bumpers and a bit of cal-look stuff but that flew out the window with the time.

See you all there.

1303Steve ·

Hi

I just entered my daily driver 1303, my sons going to be doing the driving, they asked for an elapsed time on the entry from, I said a solar eclipse, but them again a slow time is sometimes useful in bracket racing.

Stanley ·

shocking news....don't do that Craig.
I had visions of it being cancelled like what almost happened last year with the horse flue.

Know how you feel Stanley. Do I go to the shed or is the event......?

No such catastrophe, thank heavens, it's down to the shed then...

I'll post the full list next weekend, but Wayne is bringing three cars - the oval, the hillclimb and the Vee.

Other good news - Chris Holland has made a full recovery from a nasty illness and will be racing his bug.

L620 - I am going direct gloss in this instance for time constraints (ie. single stage 2 pack) rather than base/clear. First coat of high build primer tonight, will need some repairs/rub down/reprime/resand before colour goes on!

Update first post

Stanley ·

For those travelling from Brisbane via the Cunningham remember the airshow is on at Amberley.
There are already signs up along the Cunningham advising of arterial road closures and expected delays, plus there are road works on route as well. The Airshow gates open at 8.00 am so expect delays early. There is talk of 60,000 people attending.

matberry ·

Wow Stanley. 60 000 people coming to the vw drags? Craig must have done a big advertising push !

STIDUB ·

was justabout to let everyone know about the airshow at amberley on the same weekend, seems stanley beat me to it, should be good fun all the same though 🙂

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

It is a great airshow!!! Went to one a few years ago and it was awesome. F111's doing low altitude fly bys was my fav of the day. the noise then the heat and pressure from the engines on occasions was something else.

punchbuggyracer ·

You can always tell when someone has been to an air show cause their burnt under their chin and on the front of the neck!

If it wasn't for the fact I see it everyday I might have had a harder time making a choice.

Big cheers to Brad for hanging around at work till around 2am last night to lend a hand.....good news is his "mystery bug" that will debut at Warwick is now painted. Now time to pull the front beam to weld in adjusters then reassemble the whole thing, quickly go through the brakes etc etc.....hopefully I'll get the final repairs done to my oval tonight and get it in the last coat of high build primer ready for its rub tomorrow and then paint!

Big cheers to my lovely wife for letting me spend so much time at work leading up to warwick 😘

westi ·

when i saw that there was a cheer's to brad for working until 2 am.i thought that was the norm.i hope he wasn't payed overtime.lol.

love your work, can't wait to see what you have done in the flesh.

No probs Al - it was worth it!!!!!

The drive home was a struggle and my insides are struggling from the 4th cup of coffe already today - but it was worth it.........as no doubt everyone will soon agree....

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Warwick is a great track and the place has a really good atmosphere. Plus a great attendance!!

fullnoise ·

Well, I thought I just had to do a few little things like replace the front oil cooler and check the clutch and accelerator cables.

That snowballed into making new copper lines front to rear with threaded fittings which I could supposedly, like a plumber, just solder together, Nope, the solder doesn't take to brass.

Then I pulled out 2 perfectly good cables and decided to rebuild the peddle box, none of which needed doing. God that clutch cable and peddle box work is frustrating and back breaking when you're in a 30 degree garage.

So I don't have any oil in the car, I'm flat out at work and supposed to be leaving for Tamworth on Thursday morning.

There, now I feel like part of the gang, or just a drama queen. It hardly rates a mention with Das's respray and Westi's engine rebuild. But then again they haven't seen how slow I work.

See you at Warwick, CT

hellbugged ·

sounds spookily familiar CT...........

should be able to "silver solder" those fittings with a bit of flux........done it a few times.

i also like to use the 1/2 inch "hydraulic" style rubber lines, they're a little smaller on the o.d, more durable material and take a tighter radius turn better too

fullnoise ·

Hi Daimo,

I gave up the oxy bottles a while ago because the rental was ridiculous for the amount of times I'd actually use the things. I thought I'd simply solder with a butane torch, but I don't think it heats the brass fittings up enough.

I gave them to a korean bloke at an engineering place today who only knows one word of "engrish". He said okay and I said okay and hopefully the rest of the job is self-explanatory and the result is oil tight.

I'll have to do a 2 hour round trip to work on my car after a long day tomorrow, yay.

How are your preparations going?

CT

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Well Troy is gearing up to drive the car home from the dyno and pull engine out tomorrow in a bit of a marathon effort. reckons he could do in a day and a half easy. It is one very big jigsaw puzzle that has to go together one way.

as for me one stripped exhaust stud is giving me grief as we were so close to firing it up for the first time.

I can feel a few late nights/early mornings coming on......

Dasdubber ·

Just got the inside of the oval painted tonight. Bit of sleep and then need to get the outside shot tomorrow.....so for anyone going to warwick please don't look too closely at the paint on my oval and Brad's (blup58) beetle as they were both rush jobs - having a non operational booth and insufficient lighting doesn't help to stop the number of runs I've managed to achieve 🙂 blah blah, excuses excuses I know.

Brad is back down tomorrow night after work to try and get his engine ancillaries back on (Dave has upped the compression on his 2110 out of the ghia)...put the solid mounts in the stock gearbox in last night (anyone taking a spare swinger box by any chance as we have no idea if this one even has all the gears - big gamble!). Line lock went in the that bug when Brad was down yesterday along with new stainless fuel line. Fuel pump in tomorrow and then do a quick rewire (luckily not a street car that needs all those extra wires!). Then general reassembly like doors, windows etc etc on both bugs. I need to get the shroud etc onto Rod's 1916 which has kindly lent me (if I break it I'll fix it Rod!).

So like CT, I seem to be great at creating unnecessary work for myself (and Brad)...I guess a show/event like this provides a good impetus to get jobs done (like painting the oval) that I've been putting off for ages!
Al

hellbugged ·

fullnoise wrote:Hi Daimo,

How are your preparations going?

CT
yeah well, hardly repainting or engine rebuild (Al i think i officially hate you now🤓), but like everyone, i've aimed to do twice the work for the hours available it even took two goes to get tappet cover seals oil tight 🤪........the "luxury" maintaince jobs and modifications (which were as grand as a 5 speed box and hydralic clutch install a week ago) have been put aside for now and it will be fine tuning in the pits. i swear i'm starting '09 preps as soon as i get home.............just happy i'll be on track this year after missing out by a week last year

it's 3am at the mo and i'm up looking after a "chucking" child...........oh joy!...........so preps might have started and ended with a tappet adjustment yesterday😂........gotta love a daily driver!

if only we could all afford these thrills without having to work in between to pay for it all!

CT did you see the dyno day results ?................. i'm ready for the 99HP fat bug showdown this year🤘

all good fun tho, any excuse to run around with the stinger barking for a couple of days, exited!

That is a big blower Wayne!
Let me know if you need jet sizes.

fullnoise ·

After Wayne's effort I'm no longer going to complain about creating work for myself!

I'm sure it wasn't simply a case of whip the turbo off and bolt the blower on before the tea gets cold.

I'm looking forward to Warwick even more now.

BTW the Korean welder did a brilliant job attaching the brass fittings to the copper pipe. He knows another two words of english "thirty" "dollar". I wish others were so easy to deal with!

THE WPVW SPORTS SEDAN HAS HAD THE FRONT END REPAIRED FROM THE MINOR ALTERCATION AT VALLA WITH THE TYRE WALL . THE FRONT GUARDS AND BUMPER HAVE ALL BEEN REPAIRED AND PAINTED AND FITTED TONIGHT .
HOWEVER , THE NEWLY REPAIRED FRONT END NEARLY BECAME UNREPAIRED WHEN YOUNG BEN THE APPRENTICE AT WPVW TOOK THE SPORTS SEDAN FOR A QUICK SQUIRT AND FOUND HIMSELF VERY SIDEWAYS WHEN IT TURNED THE TYRES IN 3RD GEAR . TO HIS CREDIT HE GOT OFF IT REALLY QUICK AND CONTROLLED THE CAR BEAUTIFULLY . I DO BELIEVE THAT A QUICK CHANGE OF UNDERWEAR WAS IN ORDER FOR HIM.....

hypo-vw ·

THE PROBLEMS WITH THE SUPERCHARGED ENGINE IN THE OVAL HAVE BEEN SORTED AND IT IS ALSO READY TO GO TO WARRICK .
IT LOOKS QUITE SPECTACULAR TO SEE 4 LARGE BLUE METHANOL FLAMES COMING FROM THE PIPES AS IT ACCELERATES DOWN THE STREET .
LOOKS AND SOUNDS LIKE A TOP FUELER . . . . .AND IT ALL FITS UNDER THE ENGINE LID .
A FEW QUICK SQUIRTS SEEN THE ENGINE TURNING TO 8400RPM AND FEELING STRONG . THIS ENGINE IS JUST 1642cc .. . . . .

Wow Wayne - can't wait to see the oval run again!

My oval is finally into paint....now just have to get it back together (may still be piecing it together when it comes off the trailer at warwick!)

Brad's "mystery project" will debut at Warwick. It was started on Sep10 and has been good fun. Brad was down till arond 1am again tonight to get the fuel pump in, remaining fuel line, seat, guages etc....still lots to go and gearbox is and unknown so could be our sticking point if it is no good....may have to find and take a spare to warwick just in case!

I'm planning to hit the freeway about 12:00 tomorrow for Tammworth, after I baygon the tow bar. That'll be my test drive.

A couple of bottles of beer says Das's oval doesn't make it. I'm not being negative I just think he deserves a couple of beers if it does.

Great list of entrants, gonna be a good time.

The hillbilly horsepower racing team is ready and loaded on the trailer, after wheel alignment today and for dyno tune tomorrow, Warwick Friday.😀

hellbugged ·

shiney new wheels hey matt!........get those slicks?

muffler WTF?

dang, i've still done nuffin........when is this event?

matberry ·

No slicks unfortunately.
Last year slicks worked quite well, but 60,s were still slower than I'd like. Found a bit more power this year, so dont know how these old radials will cut it, but I cant wait to give it a good go, afterall, has to be softer for the tranny.

matberry ·

And the Muff is only for first dyno pull, then wake the town!

no spinning ... just traction..??

What Lee?

And slicks don't provide even more traction?

I'm feeling thirsty already CT 😂

I may still be putting it together come saturday morning at the track (as per last year when I ran in my type IV engine after a rebuild at the track with the help of buggy brad and co. after the started shat itself).....nonetheless it will be there!

Hi Lee,
some times a radial can be a problem if the drivetrain mountings are inadequate.

The wheel spin that a radial may have,
can cause a lot of vibration and "hop".

This intermittent traction and grip cycle can shock the trans to failure , even in a low power situation.

The only other problem with radials is, if only one wheel spins off the line, or in a burnout.
This can cause damage to the spider gear shafts and thrust plates that retain the side gears.

As long as the engine and trans are mounted firmly,
a radial can work well, by allowing some spin off the line,
which eases the load on the trans.

dangerous ·

I was speaking with aaron and his 20B powered Kombi now has 570 hp at the wheels from 3500 rpm right up to 9500.

This is only about 10 more than last years peak numbr,
but at low rpm it is "hundreds" more.

It is going to be fun to watch now he has the quaiffe diff to replace the weak ZF clutches that failed last year.

lookin' good Matt. There's still time to brush some flames on.

With this flu I've got I had just enough energy to put the final touch on my car....the Warwick 2008 sticker.

SHORTLY AFTER CHRIS GETS A BROKEN WINDSCREEN IN HIS TOYOTA UTE .......

WHAT DO YOU DO ? .... JUST KEEP SMILING AND ENJOY THE REST OF THE TRIP

SEE YOU TOMORROW AT WARRICK ...........

matberry ·

My trailer is loaded again after a good morning at the local dyno shop, and happy to say a few more hp found (well two actually).

Safe journey everyone

dangerous ·

Just got back from Das' shop.

The oval is still getting assembled, but should make it.
Looks great in new colours.
Plus Rod's "mule" 1915 thrasher engine.

bRAD's "80's Rad-Bug" is all but done.
2110 was upgraded with FK87 and 10.5 comp.
Should wake that sucker up!

Not sure how long the original 1500 tranny will last though.

But it is going to be fun!!

I hope everyone has a safe trip to Warrick and home.

See you all there.

Wow what a crazy time, I just finished work - started at 9am thursday morning (after finishing at 2am that morning), and worked straight through to just after 12 tonight....bloody 36 odd hours straight. The "RAD BUG" is done and oval just needs windows to go in and some tuning but otherwise the hard work was worth it as both Brad and I can drive something again this year and have a few grudge races!

Dasdubber ·

Oh yeah, massive thanks to dangerous for the assistance in what is a busy time for him, as well as my brother in law Pat who rewired the RAD BUG (pity the sign writing wasn't ready in time!).

OZ Towdster ·

Well my year is only getting worse , first i miss Valla to get my Cruiser on the road so i have a reliable work truck and bugger me if not a week before Warwick the bloody old girl decides that the crank would like to escape , so here i am still at home again doing an engine rebuild.................should of bought a kombi ute i suppose.
Anyway , just been speaking with 11Cab who's up there amongst it and he informs me that it is turning out to be another great event .
Gordo usually known for his big wheelies has fritted wheelie bars this year which resulted in one run of 2 chattered CV"s , which as far as graham knows is the biggest breakage to report.
Our Partner in CVD Dave " DYNO " Avenell is having a great run with his Injected 2442cc Supa Sports Buggy with plenty of wins against fellow buggy nut Pommy John Barrett in his Max FX.
Sorry people thats about all i can tell you but thats how it is this hour at Warwick Raceway .

Till futher reports come to hand Oz Towdster signs out

BEN THE APPRENTICE AT WPVW HAS HAD 12 PASSES IN THE SPORTS SEDAN . QUICKEST BEING 7.98 SECS .
CHRIS IN THE FORMULA VEE 1200 HAS HAD 16 PASSES . QUICKEST BEING 10.35 SECS .
I HAVE HAD 1 PASS IN THE SUPERCHARGED 1642 OVAL AT 8.8 SECS AND A HEAD CAME LOOSE . I THEN JUMPED INTO THE SPORTS SEDAN FOR 2 ADDITIONAL PASSES WITH THE QUICKEST BEING 7.81 SECS . ON THAT RUN I LINED UP AGAINST BROTHER ROD IN HIS DRAG BUG BUT HE COULD ONLY MANAGE AN 8.1 SEC PASS . THE POWER OF THE TYPE-4 WAS TOO MUCH FOR RODS AUTOCRAFT . LOL .
DAVE BUTLER HAS RUN 7.2 SECS
AARON IN THE 20B TURBO KOMBI HAS DONE THE BIGGEST WHEELSTAND I HAVE EVER SEEN A KOMBI DO AND FINISHED WITH A 6.8 SEC PASS
PETER PAGE HAS RUN 7.5 SEC IN 'DAK A TAK '
MIKE WALDRON IN THE LMS BUG HAS RUN 6.6 SECS

What a great weekend - will give some more input when I recover a bit of sleep! Congrats to Dave for his win, along with all other winners of the different classes.....and well done to Craig/volunteers/organisers for such a great event. Also well done to competitors for supporting the event!

Not such a great weekend for me as the oval made it there but didn't make it down the strip - dizzy probs on saturday (was intermittently jumping out of the drive slot), then siezed Rod's engine on the start line of first run this morning (sorry Rod - didn't even to give a caining before braking it which was disappointing!).

We got Brad's "RAD BUG" (a tribute to the 80's!) there though which was cool considering it looked like this around 3 weeks ago and 95% of work was done after hours

Best pass was 9.1 wiht lots of wheel hop and spin, should be in the 8's on the 1/8 next time around. Thanks to Dave for all his help with the 2110 engine.

Troy's beast in the background - was great to see it run 8.60's without any probs!

So many highlights, so tired....well done again to everyone who attended/raced/organised etc!

10 seconds = 15.6 quarter mile
9 seconds = 14.0 quarter
8 seconds = 12.55

Well done Craig, your helpers and all the officials. The event was well run and full on fun from Friday to the last thing Sunday.

VW Warwick goes from great to greater each year. In my mind the efforts of the competitors lifted the event up a few pegs this year. Here's why this event stood out from Portland and the 2 previous Warwicks;

1. More high quality purpose-built drag cars running 6 and 7 second passes. They're not only great to watch but to look at in the pits, due to the engineering skill, creativity and attention to detail they display.

2. Very few breakages. The cars are more reliable and there are less oil-downs and more racing. There was 469 passes on Saturday afternoon!

3. The cars are not only more reliable they're faster. The cars run down the strip stronger and with cleaner revving engines. There was less coughing and spluttering; particularly from a certain VWMA rat drag car! I think some of the street cars were getting into the 8s.

4. The more the merrier. There were lots of people, most of whom know each other, or have known each other for years and its a very friendly atmostphere.

The oval sounded as sweet on the way into Sydney as it did on the way out of it. It ran the same 9.7s @ 70 MPH it has for the past 2 years. The 2.1 60ft times make the times a little leisurely because I can't bring myself to do a burnout.

The only trouble was a noisy fan which was solved by the combined hangover wisdom Leigh, Boris & Larry.

Bring on 2009, 2010.......!

A big thumbs up from me, what a great weekend.

Started with a leisurly cruise up the New England from Tamworth with CT and his awesome oval man that car gets some looks.

Met Larry and Simon at the track on Friday, drinks and lots of laughs.

Saturday car went well then fouled plugs late in day. A quick plug change before we ran out of light. (thanks Larry )

Sunday car went like a dream all day,

Dialed in a 8.80

Run 1, 8.97 @ 78mph
Run 2, 8.84 @ 78mph
Run 3, 8.81 @ 77mph
Run 4, 8.75 @ 78mph

Dialed in 8.75 for the final as the car was now really on song.

Final, 8.77 @ 73mph (lifted as not to break out) took the win.

What a great finish to a awesome weekend ,thanks to all for a memorable time. See you next year.

Cheers Col

fullnoise ·

Congratulations on the win Col.

We almost had 2 roundy roundy racers in the final! The field was huge. Craig said it would be split into ET1 and ET2 next year, which is a good idea.

Your car sounds great (without the stinger).

It was interesting that the car could run beautifully in one run and then crap in the next, then foul the plugs with all that MSD firepower.

You might have to give your battery a bit of thought next year because the MSD sucks juice and the small pulley doesn't let the generator spin up enough to put it back in. I think some solar panels on the roof would do the trick. Your car's black, nobody would notice.

Again congratulations to Craig and his team! I read on another thread that "vw drag racing is going off" - which I believe is largely due to Craig and his endeavours with this event (plus the magazine and Portland), as I for one am hoping not to be sitting on the sideline next year.
