tuff as nails.but. what is taking so long with this car, lack of funds or shit slow workmenship.it has been out for a while now..we would be keen as punch to help out if needed,we want to see this car back in action.
wastegate pipe is proberly to small i hope that you are putting on a bigger one.
and why are your shocks so imbound the angle looks aliitle wrong, but in saying that its hard to tell from limited photos.
keep the pic's comong and for god sake hurry up.

Judging by these pics, it looks like its been to the track.....what times is it running?

10x10x ·

sorry
deleted both posts when trying to put pictures into same posts

some new photos , more on thursday if trent works on car

Yes Dave bigger tyre and time frame soon, as trent wants to get the car out , do some runs, then strip and paint. The last roll over was very costly.

Westi , the shocks are not mounted at the bottom, so wheel height could be set up on the jig to mount the guards

The wastegate is the correct size for a high boost motor. The car uses a co2 style boost controller designed by ron lummus, new to the car to control boost better than the motec.
some new pictures, let me know if you want the last ones up again, sorry again

Stanley ·

Looks fantastic. I like the grey will it still remain or have you a different colour in mind?
I also like the fact the volksy dash is still there in the background....👍

CO2 boost control ... how does this work?? Sensor?

westi ·

i pulled this of the net for you to under stand staley.
it pretty basic once you have read it and it makes good sense.
10x10
i under stand the co2 set up.but after making a fair few manifolds in my time pipe size and placement are also just as important as the choice of size waste gate.and its flow.

i look forward to updates as the car will be nothing short of a masterpiece as always.

Co2 Boost Control: In order to understand why Co2 boost control is needed in some applications, basic knowledge of how a wastegate and boost controller works is needed.

An external wastegate has a diaphragm which creates a seal, and a spring which holds the wastegate closed. Spring rates vary depending on the amount of boost you want to run. Typically they are given in a "bar" value. For example, 1 bar would be 14.7psi. This would mean that in order to open the wastegate you would need to exert a greater pressure than the 14.7 psi spring holding the wastegate closed. In order for the wastegate to work you must have the boost reference port hooked up to the compressor side of the turbo or intake manifold. If you don't have this vacuum line attached then the boost pressure will not be limited to the set spring pressure; it will build unlimited boost pressure until your engine is destroyed (“bottom” wastegate port). Normally, exhaust manifold pressure pushes against the valve and diaphragm (through the vacuum line attached to the compressor reference port) which in turn pushes against the wastegate spring. When the exhaust manifold pressure exceeds the spring pressure the wastegate’s plunger opens releasing the excess pressure through the wastegate outlet (typically via a dumptube).

The top port on the wastegate is normally open to the atmosphere. This provides no additional resistance to the wastegate “spring”, and the wastegate will operate at the desired spring pressure. In order to increase the amount of boost over the spring pressure inside the wastegate, two methods can be used.

The first method is using a manual boost controller. A manual boost controller works using a spring and check ball. By screwing the adjusting screw into the boost controller you put more pressure on the spring which reduces the amount of airflow through the boost controller and into the boost controller port (“bottom” wastegate port). Less airflow means less pressure will be assisting the spring to keep the wastegate plunger shut. The “top” port is left open to the atmosphere with a manual boost controller.

The second method is using an “electronic” type boost controller. An electronic boost controller uses a solenoid inline of the boost pressure source to the top port on the wastegate. The solenoid is “pulsed” by a PWM (pulse width modulated) output from the boost controller or engine management system. With more opening and closing of the solenoid more pressure is applied to the wastegate. With less opening and closing, less manifold pressure is applied and less boost is achieved. When more boost pressure is applied to the top port of the wastegate, it directly applies more force to the wastegate valve, keeping the valve shut until enough exhaust pressure is applied to open the wastegate. This is essentially like adding a higher rated wastegate spring (stiffer). The bottom port of the wastegate is connected directly to the pressure source (compressor cover or intake manifold), with nothing installed inline.

Exhaust pressure increases as boost pressure increases. The amount of exhaust pressure in the exhaust manifold is affected by the turbo exhaust wheel size, exhaust housing size, exhaust manifold type (equal length or log), displacement, cam profiles, etc. In most situations using a manual boost controller you are not able to increase boost much more than a 2:1 ratio, meaning if you are running a 10psi wastegate spring you are not able to increase the boost much more than 20psi. With an equal length manifold, and large turbo sometimes a 3:1 ratio can be achieved. When using an electronic boost solenoid on the top port of the wastegate, as much as 6:1 ratio can be achieved if an equal length manifold and large turbo are used. For high boost applications, using a small wastegate spring for lower gear traction an electronic boost controller is what is necessary. For most turbo set-ups (probably 95% of what is on the market) achieving a 6:1 ratio is not possible. This is where running a compressed gas that can apply greater than manifold pressure is necessary. For example, a 3psi wastegate spring can be used, and flowing 90psi of co2 pressure to the top port of the wastegate will allow for greater than a 6:1 ratio. This gives the ability to get the boost low enough to aid in traction, and increase boost to pressures in excess of 50psi if needed. The boost solenoid vents the excess Co2 pressure so that target pressure can be reached. This also allows for more boost consistency with elevation change, as you are not relying on less available atmospheric pressure for the turbo compressor to work with. Boost controllers such as the AMS-1000 or AMS-500, and the AEM boost controller solenoid being used with the AEM EMS or Hondata systems are compatible with Co2. It should be noted that Co2 as a pressure source is not practical for a daily driver, and should really only be used for drag racing applications.

Turbo54 ·

Westi, great summary and totally understand. Thanks.

Off topic and should be in another post called ASK WESTI!
I am running internal wastegate GT2871R and am doing the exhaust and muffler at the moment. Thing is I have looked at so many different exhaust flanges and dont know whether to run a big exhaust or a splitter in between the wastegate and exhaust. I have heard this can cause pressure opening or kreeping the gate open with the exhaust gasses sucking the gate open. Is this true, what is the best setup? My whole exhaust system is only 1.5 feet long and using 2.5 inch pipe to keep the speed up.

Also on the subject of CO2, (Drag racing only) what is you setup your turbo completely seperate to the motor and spooled the exhaust turbine with CO2 and forget about the exhaust manifold and regulate it with soloniods? This would run cooler, get instant boost with no lag. Would this work?

London Bugger ·

wow awesome work, looks like Oz is getting some serious race cars out, what with the new CBB car, I have to get overthere to see a race one day!

Rob.

Dasdubber ·

Fantastic stuff - certainly can appreciate the amount of time not only to do the fabrication, but for all the headscratching and planning that goes into something so complex. Well done thus far!
Al

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Can relate to the head scratching and planning in trying to make stuff fit into that space you have. Troy and I have stood at the back of his car in the building stages and just stared thinking for quite a while before one of us comes up with an option. then usually the argument on whether or not it will work begins LOL

thanks for the comments, but dont get to excited about the paint, was done with a spray can , so the car can get out on the track soon. Trent hopes to have it ready in the next 2 weeks, although a few parts from the states have not arrived and will added later. Chasis, body and aluminium will be re done later so the car will be like new as it was before the roll over.
Dave the tires are 10.5 by 28.

What do you call that type of step (triangle design raised up) and what length can your machine reach in . Does it shrink much, over all size .
Great to see a shop that plays and builds all types of cars ( not just v8's ) Mast be some great jokes flying around the shop .😵‍💫
Play safe , Trent and c & v crew .

Thankyou for the comments, trent will be doing more dyno work tom. just a little at a time. Dave that run is about 6000 rpm. We hope to run at least 9000. Boost is still low around 26 psi, we need to see around 36 psi.
The new tyres have made the car very easy to dyno, a frew straps and it has been ok.

Does anyone know when it will be hitting the track? Will he will be going to warwick?

Dasdubber ·

Fantastic stuff. I'm sure a lot of people will be eagerly waiting to see it make some shake down passes....myself included!
Al

vassy66T1 ·

Holy crap batman!!! Get it going straight and there will be some amazing numbers 👍

10x10x ·

sorry for the delay in report.

We have encounterd a few issues with the fuel system. The electronic fuel pump could not supply enough methanol once we started to increase boost. After much thought it was decided not to run the car with the current set up therefore trent has decided to switch to a mechanical fuel pump incorporating dry sump pump to carry out dry sump conversion with tank heater and pump to be supplied by pauter and ron lummus. these items should be leaving the US next week. After a little fabrication to install tank and heater etc, Trent will keep everyone up to date with tuning process.

polak ·

that is frikken mental🤪 do you get any traction on those rear tires on the track? or are they just for the dyno runs? great work, hope to see it at warwick!

10x10x ·

tires are just for dyno. Destroyed one set of slicks in 2 runs. So far these have done 6 runs and are still perfect. They actually give you a lot more grip than the drag slick.

10x10x ·

trent has been busy building a street car, but is now back onto the race car. just a few shots of new set up with mechanical pump, new hard fuel lines , oil tank/ heater. etc etc.

BigWigRaceCars ·

Nice work! That car is looking good.

vw54 ·

so will we see the car in Portland ???

10x10x ·

welcome along Big Wig, some of your parts being put to good use, thankyou.

Trying to get to portland , just need to wire the car , easier said than done. Trent has also purchased larger pauter heads, pistons etc which could delay things. This would mean re-making exhaust, inlet pipe work etc etc

Ron lummus will be comming out from the states to test a new clutch set up he has developed in trents car, it would be good to try and make this around portland, but trent keeps changing things.

Trent has also been working on his other German car

http://www.cvperformance.com.au/news.php?show=68

News on the street car. Dave B has finished the gear box, waiting for ron l to send some more parts and it to may be ready for portland

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I have a few C63 and a CLK black come into work all the time. One of the young guys witha C63 has done some work to his car and recently(about a month ago) ran 11.37@121 at a test and tune at willowbank.

would be good to see if you could get RL out about the same time as Portland though👍

JVLRacing ·

Really like to hear this bloke make it to the track!...

reub ·

Or even what the final dyno results were...👍

JVLRacing ·

Iam bumpin this to the top....i like this!!!!!😎

10x10x ·

Trent has been busy since Christmas. Have been waiting for the motec installer to finish, he works one day in every three weeks on the car. It should be finished in the next month. Trent got sick of waiting so is now half way through building his second drag car. Another pauter has been ordered running large carbies. The gearbox has been re built by Dave b. And gd racecars has again built a half chasis car. The car has a custom front beam, 4 wheel disc etc etcThe piston, barrels and heads will come off the turbo motor and a new more serious set up on the turbo motor to run high psi has already arrived . More in 4 weeks as Trent is away watching the Brazilian beetles run

Loved the videos!

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Hi all...
Thankyou for all your support and encouraging comments.
Firstly i am wrapped that the car is now on the track ... Even if it was for only a burnout.
We attended a friday night meet at sydney dragway at short notice as we are still in the final stages of tuning.
The car is being driven by Vick Elfes, the V of cv performance...
Vic drove the car into the burnout area and went through procedures and the car bogged down. We suddenly realised that the burnout limiter was set too low .
He then switched to race mode and then produced a very strong burnout with the engine sounding strong.from the outside we were happy , but vic had another story with a warning light of low oil pressure.
A decision was made to take the car back to the pits ...

First thing monday morning i pulled the engine out and then stripped it to reveal signs of poor oiling on number 1 and 3 big ends..

We are currently rectifying this problem as we now run a dry sump and at this stage we have put the problem down to a simple case of setup due to cavitation.

I have put aside next week to have the car sorted and plan get the car ready for friday before jamboree...

Thanx

Trent.

Any updates?

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Hi All
I have been busy getting the street car ready for the vw nationals over the weekend.
It was a great day and i enjoyed showing the car.

If any forum members have any photos of my car from the weekend please feel free to post them in this thread .

The race cars new engine has been dummied up for fittment of headers and intake and fortunately it all fits.
I have completed plumbing and today i removed the engine for final stages of build. Tomorrow i will be measuring pushrod length and sending the pushrods to GD to cut.

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Update ... Work will begin again today on the street car, just a little time off after the big push to get the car to the vw nationals.

The race car is coming along nicely too with the pushrods now been cut to length and the piston to valve checked yesterday. The pistons are now at the machinist and then i will have a final dummy assembly.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Good to here , what happen to race car engine after the burnout ? Sounds like major rebuild there .
Will you be posting lummus forsale parts up on website , so we can see them ? Be good to see them instead
of phoning up .

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Hey Peter

Race car engine lost oil pressure ... We were running a new dry sump set up, that enging has been rebuilt and is now in the street dub...

I am building another pauter engine of the same capacity but using later design cylinders and heads... This combo is the new race engine... The idea being all race program parts will become spares and work in both set ups.

TRENT_DEMOS ·

RLR ... Photos and pricing will be on the rlr australia facebook and on the cvperformance website very soon ..

apmitchell74 ·

That street Beetle looks insane! That's going to be the fastest street registed Beetle around! Nice job...

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Nice job Trent and smart thinking on the interchanging of parts from race car to the street car!!

LOWBUG ·

Wow, saw the "street car" at the nats, thats a great bit of kit, are you really going to register that and drive it on the street?

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Thanx lowbug .. Yes it will be a driven streeter.. I can not wait .. Perhaps it will see a cam change .. But this will be done after warrick..

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Hi all please check out some photos of products that are available from Rlr Australia on Facebook...

Updates with many pics of products....enjoy

LOWBUG ·

Trent, how are you going to achieve registration?

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Hey lowbug ... The car has rego already. There will be a few obstacles getting an. Engineers cert , but i will take it step by step.

LOWBUG ·

Really keen to see how you get on with eng cert,(might have to go see your guy for some mods I want to do) it would be good to see some appreciation for all the the work you've done by getting the cirtification. How do you think you'll find using the vertical gate shifting on the the street?

TRENT_DEMOS ·

Sounds good ... Vertigate shifter will be a chore... On the street anyway .. This car will not be a daily .. But something special that will enjoyed for what it is..

LOWBUG ·

Trent what sort of clutch set up are you running in it, something easy for the street or strictly race set up, whats the expected power output?

TRENT_DEMOS ·

I am using a Rlr black magic disc and 1700lb pressure plate ... I will tune the engine and nitrous to 350hp at the wheels .. This clutch setup is available at Rlr Australia. Check out image on Rlr Facebook page.

LOWBUG ·

I've heard that the black magic clutch is very good, good to know this stuff is available here in aus, are you looking after distribution of RLR gear here? Sorry I don't do face book. Is the car going to be full weight or stripped out to keep it light, whats the end plan, paint job maybe? This is exactly what I want to do, maybe not such as big a engine or No2, Im just concerened about the fine line of drivability and keeping it registered, it also will be my weekend toy and not driven much. What do you reckon?

TRENT_DEMOS ·

It's launched !!! The new Revolution 6 clutch pack ... Images on the Rlr Australia face book ... Check it out!!!

dangerous ·

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Looking good Trent!! Bet your keen as to get behind the wheel!!

TRENT_DEMOS ·

A big Thanx to all got your encouraging and kind words...
We made it to Wsid last night.
First the good news Is that we have finally solved the oiling problem that we discovered after the burnout of last outing.
The bad news is that we found the next weakest link...
After the burnout all Was looking engine wise so Vick staged and launched with a soft tune at 6300rpm and then lost all drive.
I took it back to CV this morning to discover two broken axles..
Box will be out Monday morning and off to DB for some sorting.

Thanx

thats for sure !!
I went to Coogee to see Trent some weeks ago and couldn't believe just how much he had on his plate with not only his 4 established resturants , but he had just opened another across the road and his wife had just had a baby .

Trent was kind enough to take Louise and me for a tour downstairs through the kitchen of his newest resturant , and I must say it looks really well set up and extremely professional .

I'm sure when he gets the first opportunity he will be playing with his toys ...... well done Trent !!
