I like the lead and warren brown.... don't like the little guy.
They need to learn camera skills rather than looking to their mates for approval on a joke keep looking at the camera.
Its has to scripted (To much!), maybe off the cuff would be better. I think I will give it a few more shows and see what happens.

But as always there are few shows which make it as a clone, they are not australian ize it!!!

Warren Brown I think did a pretty good job - but then he's been doing car related TV for a while, so has more experience (Peking to Paris for
example)

Charlie Cox needs to stop trying to be Clarkson while trying to look like James May, and the little guy they just need to get rid of (ok, maybe he can drive, but who cares - that's what Stig is for). Got to say though, 10 points for launching the RAV like that !!!

btw - has anyone been watching the "classic/never before seen" TopGear that SBS has had on the last few weeks ???

Amazing how much Clarkson, May and Hammond improved just in the first season alone... if the Aussie show can match that, it'll turn out brilliant I reckon.

I'm in the "television business" so i thought i could give some of my thoughts...


They got the studio look down pretty well although the sound recording wasn't too good.

The camermen will hopefully get better - in the studio they were all over the place and on location there was far too much zoomin g/ pulling focus etc. OK, it took the UK Top Gear 5 years to get to that beautifully art-directed look it has now down but Top Gear Oz has it to copy and they were not doing it too well.

It was far too scripted - they were rushing their lines to get their "jokes" in a more ad-libbed approach will be better once they have found their feet...

Far too much shouting - over the top of each other at times, thats just really bad TV, and the director should have pulled them up on this pretty quickly when filming.

There were some others but i'll wait to see if they are ironed out next week. For a 1st effort i'll give it 6/10.

We were very disappointed and probably won't watch again. We liked Warren Brown but the lead guy was just obnoxiuos. The little Hammond clone was trying too hard to be funny. If they want to just clone the pommie version, it is a waste of time. Why watch the imitators when you can see the original. I MAY tune in to the last one to see if they improved but I doubt it that I will.

Why didn't they make the presenters our own not a almost carbon copy.
They need a bogan, a older business car guy like a club presedent of some kind and maybe a woman with there own personalities and that get along but dont if you know what I mean. Aussie top gear is a waste of time at the moment.

Hope they pulled all of the fluids out of the moke before dumping it in the ocean. I fish near there!

Overall, I wasn't that impressed. It just seemed like an Australian version of the original with dubious choices for hosts. Why not just stick with the real thing? It's the original and the best.

It was definitely not as good, but come on we gotta cut them some slack, first show. And think about the UK guys, how good they are, how long they've worked together. It would be almost impossible to top them.

Give them a few weeks and it will improve.

Its strange how 4wd clubs try to promote safe driving techniques & looking after your vehicle.So here are these three "MORONS" driving through the surf(i dont know about you guys but i dont like driving around in rust buckets).

Very scripted and copied from the origional (which incedently seems to have dissapeared from our screens!). I enjoyed it but all 3 are carbon copies of the Uk origional. Warren the cartoonist was my personal fave having watched him in Peeking to Paris. So the others were complete unknowns to me but like fungus will take a bit to grow on me. Although I'm Red all the way through (VW first of course) I'll freely admit that at the lower trim levels the current Falcon is a better package than the Commodore. Go higher tho - SS-V compared to XR-8, HSV compared to FPV/FTE/WhateverFordHasTheseDays... well up there the Holden is ahead of the Ford.

Plus the current Falcon looks like a tarted-up Camry.

thought the Porsche segment was pretty laem, the yhad to show teh car in heaps of funny angles as whenever you saw a long shot is was going 80 kays on beautiful windey roads.

I went to the filming of the second episode that will b on next week. I stood round from 2pm till 6.30 on the 40 degree day watching take after take and it was all ford v's holden. I really hope it gets better than this especialy after all the hype.
The question is will SBS run the english version as well. If they dont im sure it will b back by popular demand.

I really like both holdens and fords up to the HZ holden and XC Falcon. After that, they all turned to disposable plastic junk IMHO.
These days, the only difference between Ford and Holden is the badge on the bonnet.🙄

Id much rather the new models than the old piece of shit VN, VL etc etc (don't know the ford equivilants 😂) My brother has a VN sitting unregistered in our garage atm. It is one of the most poorly built cars IMO. It has lasted very well after ALOT of abuse though 😁

Top gear has been running in the uk since 1977 and was relaunched in 2002 in its current format. jeremy Clarkson presented it from 1988 until 2000 and then again from 2002.

SBS will continue to screen the original, the Aussie one is on whilst the UK one takes a break.

As far as iam aware SBS have never shown series 1 from 2002.

I didn't mind it. If it was going to be heaps different to the UK version it wouldn't be called Top Gear. check out other shows from around the world, price is right?, Big brother etc.

Well, it wasn't bad up until the Moke bit. What chowderhead thought that one up? I think that once the actors stop trying to be their British counterparts it might be pretty good.

I'm really fearful of when the American Top Gear starts here. No British program has ever been improved by Americanization.

I wasn't impressed with first show- set up looks good and format is OK but they should be themselves and not try to be versions of Jeremy , Richard and James. It can only improve😊

I finally got around to watching a recorded episode. I too think it is crap. The guy who plays hammond should stop drinking so much coffee. The whole show should try to stop being a clone. It doesnt work. Just like the american version of 'the office' didnt work. You can copy the format without trying to imitate the whole show. You can have road tests, celebs in satrias etc, just dont try and make it word for word.

Dont know that the Satria is a good car to let them loose in. Its actually too good. If they are anything at all like the Gti you'll never see excitement.I went to the launch at Eastern Creek years ago and I was blown away by the grip. No grunt + heaps of grip will mean boring TV.

What shits me about both versions of the show is the constant talking. Just once I would like to listen to the cars rev out. All I ask for is 10 seconds of engine noise per car. Is it too much to ask?

Destroying a classic moke wasnt cool either.

By copying the original show it feels like they are playing roles that were never meant for them.

Watched the first half hour of the first show and TOTAL SHIT! they were trying to be there uk counterparts, the format was the same,the warehouse was the same shit they even had a stig!!!

I must say that the first few shows I thought were crap......Again tried to clone tonite with the sail boat car, already been done by Clarkson and crew....

Must say though that it seemed better. Especially liked Warren with the Torak tractor....

It took Clarkson and crew a few seasons to get it going, so I will give the Aussie version some more time, however, not a real fan of Charlie Cox....Trying to be Clarkson and that will never happen.

I agree - it's definitely nowhere near the UK show, but I think it is slowly getting better. I only survived to ep2 because of the Ford v Holden thing, but I'll keep watching it now I think.

From ep1, to 2 & 3 there was a noticeable difference in the little guy (who the f*** remembers his name ?)... obviously where the show's producers etc. felt their weakest link was. Now that they've improved him, they've moved focus to Charlie...yes he's a goose and he's trying too hard to be Clarkson, but last nite he was definitely "toned down" over previous episodes, and I reckon next week will probably be improved still more.

Once they've got the presenters being a bit more natural, I reckon some format changes are in order. "What were they thinking?" should go bye bye, which would open up some more time for road tests etc.

The track also needs to be made more obvious, some higher camera angles etc. Putting the map of it up on the SBS website is a good start to that process tho http://www.sbs.com.au/topgearaustralia/web/images/circuitmap_large.png

I agree with the comment that they are trying to be too much like the UK show and Clarkson. And thats the bits of the show I dont like. When they stop being Top Gear UK clones it actually gets better.

In all the people I know who've owned or had anything to do with kombis, only one or two didn't like them. Unfortunately I'm married to one of them. 😢

How is it that in the last two weeks or so the show has featured six or seven completely useless and unaffordable mercs, bimmers and audis, but given one german workhorse that more Aussie have owned than have had trips to the dentist and they think it's a good idea to right it off as useless?

Sure old kombis are old and slow, but so are HK holdens. 2 weeks ago a standard 4 cyl camry wagon beat said holden (albiet somewhat worked too) over the quarter and they didn't diss it. Good on James Morrison for getting up them about kombis. They've gone down in my estimations by some distance.
And what is it with the star in a bog standard car thingo? Almost everyone they've had so far has been a full on petrolhead with motorsport experience. Of course James Morrison can drive fast, he owns an Aston Martin for crying out loud. I've been waiting for the show to get better, but I might not wait much longer. Alby Mangles did a better job of driving from the desert to the coast than they did and the background shots of one of them doing no.2s were just unneeded. The jokes are fake, the driving is boring, the cars are completely boring and the personalities...oh, sorry, there aren't any. The rubber snake prank was the highpoint of last night's show.

One word describes the whole thing. SOFT! 👎

More hooning, real cars, decent challenges and proper personalities is what they need. But I'm not holding breath...and believe me, I wanted to see it succeed more than anyone. Otherwise SBS, it's time to activate the ejector seat and get Clarkson and the boys back. At least they are real.

I thought it was huge improvement over last season, Warren Brown has really lifted his game, James Morrison was very good, the other bloke has improved as well.

When James Morrison was a guest last season, he said he used to own a Kombi, gotta give him points for that

Yeah, I thought tonite was pretty good... James Morrison is a MASSIVE improvement over Charlie Cox.

I reckon Steve's got a point on who the Stig is... height is about right for it to be Bargwanna.

Best part of the show - the look on Skaifey's fast when he was told that first time - he was ready to go him I reckon !!!

I must say, I rather enjoyed it.

Wazza has always been ok in my book. Morrison sounded like an ad voiceover when testing that Evo, but he relaxed a fair bit towards the end. What it need to finish off the presenters lineup is to hold Steve underwater until he stops kicking. His replacement can be anyone who hasn't got a voice like an ADHD 5-y-o with severe nasal congestion.

The Steve character is trying less to be like Hammond now but he is still annoying. This was the first episode I have watched since the 2nd one of the 1st season. I doubt I will watch again until they start doing things that are not based on what the pommie version has done and done better.

i thought it was much better - i enjoyed it enough - it may not compare to the 'best' Top Gear episodes, but some of the pomme episodes aren't that exciting at times.

Best bits of show, the 'What were they thinking bit' - frig i thought, you idiots - you didn't keep it did you!!!

And im with Sides SKAIFEY's face - what a sore loser! Even though he actually won, geez the guy was ready to massacre the place - take it easy Skaifey!

James Morrison = legend; so how could they go wrong with that choice..
the other 2 have settled in better and carried the show, though at times i cringed at the attempt at humor
but overall is was watchable and so way better than with that other wayne kerr who got the punt..

Question (sort of). If the guy that got kicked off was sort of taking the part of Jeremy Clarkson (main man), who is doing the job now ????

Also, I think the Stig might be Russell Ingal. The way he stood with his arms crossed looked exactly like Russell on the Super Cheap Auto adds.

I was much more impressed with last nights episode. I haven't watched any since episode 3 of last season. When they started talking about putting kombis on a bonfire was when I switched off.
I thought clobbering the 'What were they thinking' board with the lamo shark repellant mini was a great idea 😂

Just got back from the shooting of episode 5 and they are getting better. They feature a low light bay camper in one of their challenges (which James Morrison very obviously likes), so worth catching the episode for that reason alone. It will screen on Monday June 8th.

was much mor eimpressed with it after the change over between Cox and James Morrison. Much better, and at least he says that he simply likes cars rather than try to proclaim that he knows lots about them. (like some long haired mullet freak that can go back to the other country he lives and commentates on motor sports in)

I think some of the appeal of the UK show is the exotic locations and in some of those locations they can do things in cars that would have you locked up and your car impounded down here.

At least with the Aussie show the taste of the presenters is a bit closer to mine ... the cool board on the UK show just gives me the &*$%@ 's and they have such a VW phobia.

Nup. I'm out. Watched my second episode last night.

The road test between the 2 elfins. YOu dont need to know too much about cars to know that a 2l turbo is going to outperform a 5.7litre V8 when the 2L is 400kg lighter. It steered like a dog. They made a point of saying the trick would be getting the V8 off the line. Well maybe you shouldnt turn off traction control. They made a point about the v8 being the same engine as the HSV and also the corvette! Wow. Both cast iron pushord engines. great. They made a big point about the suspension being developed by the SAME people who work on the HSV cars. wow. How much more credibility do you need than someone who experimented putting different shock absorbers on a taxi.

What on earth was the point of the challenge? To see how long a group of paintballers would yell at a driver? Or to see if a painted mini was more bullet prrof than a commodore with sheets of corry stuck to the outside?

Not to mention the voice and too much red cordial personality of the "hammond" one.

I thought last weeks episode was pretty good but it seems that they have sunk back into their old ways 👎

yeah well I was well sucked in….

I see the prog a few hours earlier than a mate.
so, early in the prog when the low light kombi was wheeled out and it seemed they were going to butcher it, I sent a text to him to tell him to watch the forum for the inevitable reaction.

"trouble" was, they didn’t butcher the kombi and there was no reaction on here…….

PS. any theories why it wasnt cut up.

ls1's are all alloy. Show was alright nothing serious , think they should have compared a country buggy to the pommy kit car though.

They didn't and they are forgiven.

Why get so upset about the imminent destruction of a low light?

They are becoming too rare and anyway, they are my favourite bay, having driven one called Gus the Bus through Baja California in Mexico, with the Manx Club in 1998.

my panel was in neighbors so been there done that n it wouldnt make the septics touch cause it doesnt have the bog skin treatment
