Thanks for the write up a great read and a real inspiration to myself in the middle of doing this conversion (If I ever have time between work to play with the beetle).
Congrats on the kms.

Cheers,

Richard

Great writeup Jak and an interesting read.
It's great to know that it's been faultless for so long.

Good write up Jak. Thanks for the thanks 馃檪

As you would know, there wasn't much info around when I did my conversion (end 2002). I figured keeping a detailed diary on my website would help others. Let's face it, it's cheaper to learn from other peoples mistakes rather than your own 馃槈

Did the engine still clear the firewall when you moved the gearbox forward 2 inches?
Is this EJ20t,EJ22t or EJ25t?

there is ship loads of power, no wonder your done so many Ks They are so much fun to drive once your got the subaru power馃槀
Does your engine have some sort of mounting to hold it to the car besides the 4 gear box bolts??
If yes any pics,

ian.mezz 路

After driving my superrex the engine lid is real hot to touch. about 60c you could cook a chook under there.far hotter then me 1916 ever got.
what sort of insulation do you use so the kids don't get to hot in the back seat???

ian.mezz 路

I have been driving the car for 4 months now .my temp is ok ,my rear seat box goes upto the parcel shelf but my cut out in the firewall is a fare bit lower so it seems to get a biuld up of heat from off the exhaust and turbo and it has no where to go , as the heat raisers and it gets trapped .

1303Steve 路

Ian, you need to drive faster to remove the heat馃お

Jak Rizzo wrote:Do u have aheat sheild over the turbo? I have an alloy heat sheild over the turbo, thermo tech wrap on all the exhaust & also a thermo tech blanket wrapped around the underside of the intercooler to stop the heat soak.
it still doesn't explain the hot decklid. Unless it gets hot after sitting there a while from the heatsoak, but not while it's running.

Jak
Hmmmmmmm i have none of that, 馃お馃お. looks like its a trip to the muffler guy to get sum stuff.
thanks ian

and i only have the factory air intercooler

Hi Ian

What about a turbo blanket? http://horsepowerinabox.com/HPIAB2/index.htm

Jak, your shearing CV bolts seems very strange. Where they allen head or the proper 12 pointed spline bolts? Either way they should be grade 12.9 which is friggen strong. They shouldn't break unless they weren't tightened properly in the first place. In fact your axle should shear off (and usually does) before those bolts break.

With the allen head versions there is more risk it might be a cheap chinese bolt that isn't the grade 12.9 that it should be.

A real pleasure to read something sensible馃槑 Thanks Jako馃槑

Hey Jak,
Couple of questions if I may.
1/ Where did you get the steel fuel lines from?
2/What brakes are you running?
3/ I NEEEED a gearbox. Are you able to pm me the details of the guy that did yours?
Thanks,
Steve.
PS. What ever happened to that Type 3 case/motor I got from you that eneded up having a hole in it?

The fuel line I got from Repco for $3 a metre as apposed to $15 a metre for fuel injection line.
I have type 4 brakes on the front which are great ( & actually came from Steve C's wasserboxer bug) but I have Nissan GTR bakes ready to bolt on, they are now finished, just have to find the time to put them on

rear brakes are the standard Ford conversion thats been done since 2000
My gearbox guy doesn't like doing gearboxes, I had to twist his arm just to do CT's.
The type 3 motor funnily enough has been until only recently living in my front garden! it has been a long life dream of mine to have an engine block in my front yard. As u know it would suit my street beautifully...........
I've had it hidden in shrubs & mulch, my wife didn't even know it was there! Ahh living the dream.

Well done Jak, Im tired from reading let alone having to write all that up. I prob should at some stage as there are subtle differences as to what you need to do in a Type 3 compared to a Beetle but a lot of good info for people wanting the challenge. All I can say is do it!

Thanks, mate. Id be interested to know more about the Type 4 front brakes....maybe a pic or two? Lemme know if you want to offload em when you finally get the GTR units on. 馃槉
Yeah, I knew you literally put that motor to (the garden) bed. Was wondering if you still had it out there for your neighbours to see. Im sure they would have loved it!
Cheers,
Steve
PS Re throwing an EJ20T in a Type 3, Im reeeeally surprised it isnt happening a lot more. Ill be definately be going that way eventually. Would have done it this time if I hadnt picked up my motor/loom/ecu etc so reasonably priced!

Yep! After planning and sourcing all parts, GTMac's engine conversion took two days, drive-in, drive out... But not including the radiator installation that was already done. A WRX is a very nice fit in a Type 3 Fasty or Notch - better than a Beetle; not as much metal to slice

Very informative transplant summary, Jak

I have been driving me superrex all week end and checking temp. the temp just seems to be heat soak on the left hand rear of the car from the radiator header tank and the radiator pipe that goes close to the engine lid馃槉

Hi Jak

Where do you measure your oil temp?

Steve

Cam 路

Hey Jak, long time no see!

Good to see that your superbug is still going strong after all this time.

Did you and CT get around to doing the Dutton rally this year? If so, how did your car perform?

Cheers,
Cam

ian.mezz 路

Ha Jak heres a hard Question for you , would you ever go back to a Volkswagen engine ????馃槀

I'd agree with you there... one of the reasons my 58 is now laid up under the house and will be sold....

Jak Rizzo wrote:& what are your inlet temps with that air to air intercooler? Just don't want u to kill your engine Ian.
Ok i added a couple of those flexy air tubes from auto barn to push air up to the intercooler, then wrapped exhaust pipe and added a heat sheild over the top of the turbo , I stuck a temp sender in the rubber hose between intercooler and inlet. Running around today in 34 deg heat intake temps 48deg on boost then comes back down to 39 cruzing along hwy at 115Ks

Good stuff Jak, I am sure this thread would help people make up their mind on the type of engine when considering a conversion. Just checked out the link........... those black wheels are just too bad!!

Great read Jak.
About the 39mpg
Ive always thought mine was real economical, ive never checked but think it would be around that or better.
Im running 3.88 RP and for some reason mine runs past 7500 sometimes, on the stock ECU.
These things love to rev heh!
Or maybe its just me.

ian.mezz 路

yeah its hard to rev to 6000rpm on the street as all the cars seem to be moving real slow in front of you馃槀

choppa 路

Interesting, id like to do those mods on the exhaust and inlet. Ive read they make a small difference, I had no idea it would be anything like a big improve.
Yeah sometimes I get carried away at the drags and hold 3rd thru the traps or maybe just asleep during gear changes.
I have no idea where peak torque is, but your probably right at about 6000.
The engine was definately more lively at normal road speeds when I had the 4.12 in it. With the 3.88 it seems a bit more lazy, but still enough to get me into plenty of trouble.馃槀
