ignition kill switch

G'day, I'm looking at installing a switch somewhere into the ignition system, so the switch has to be on while the key is turned on so the engine will fire. This will be going into my 1969 beetle.

I was going to place the switch between the ignition and the starter motor but I am having second thoughts as I found out that there would be quite a larger current running through the switch.

I wanted to uses a small push button switch so I could hide it but the small switch i have is only rated for .5 amps at 125 VAC. If anyone has any information as to solving my dilemma, it would be much appreciated.

if it was me I would go and get a good switch 20amp and find the switched wire to the coil from ignition switch and put it line there.you can't beat quality.

Ignition to coill. Also allows the starter to turn over with out the engine firing.

ok thanks, new couple of questions, whats wrong with placing a switch between the ignition and the starter, and next what sought of current (magnitude, no "its electrical current" jokes, I know there's pranksters out there, haha) runs between the ignition and coil?

Joel ·

cos that will just disable the starter
a would be theif could still roll start or just bridge the solenoid wire and be off into the sunset with ur bug

yeah after posting my last reply I thort that may be a problem. Well what sort of current can i anticipate coming through the wire to the coil.

Joel ·

cant tell u off hand waht a coil draws but its not huge
an oridinary quality toggle switch will do the job fine

Cool thanks Joel. Will set up tomorrow and tell everyone how i went.

Hi
You are better off using a relay next to the starter motor or battery to get better voltage to your starter motor solenoid...

there is very little current going to the coil...

then use a hidden switch turn the relay off...

or you can go the other way and use one of those Hella/Narva battery cable switches..
some have a plastic key to turn them on/off
and the other metal heavy duty one with metal key..

You could place it under the rear seat so its accessable
- under the metal rail that goes across under the seat.
I have fitted one of these... not in My car...

I've got an alarm... remote.... lol

plus electric fuel filter switch...

cheers
