Who would be intrested in running a Super sprint at the 2009 VW Nationals?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/72894/who-would-be-intrested-in-running-a-super-sprint-at-the-2009-vw-nationals

1303Steve ·

Hi

In conjunction with the 2009 VW Nationals we will be holding a Supersprint at Wakefield Park near Goulburn on the Saturday 23 May, the day before the 2009 VW Nationals.

Who is intersted in running?

Send me your snail mail address and I will get entry forms to you as soon as they are available.

Styeve

VWFREAK ·

My car isn't suitable, but great idea.

Sides ·

Yup - I'd be keen.

1303 ·

I'd be in if you can make it happen....are you planning on tagging onto anothers club event to make up numbers??

hellbugged ·

yeah, i'll be in that Steve

1303Steve ·

Hi

We are running the event ourselves, Club VeeDub Sydney merged with the Volkswagen Club of NSW some time ago, so we will be using expertise from our own club to run the event, we will however need to invite other clubs to attend to fill up the numbers, perhaps friends of VW racers.

We will need helpers on the day, we are trying to do it as cheaply as possible for the entrants but but we will have professional timing etc.

Thanks for the PMs keep them coming.

Steve

VWCOOL ·

yeah mate

Mick058 ·

i would be keen, have a mini friend too.

Brad ·

What sort of vehicle do you need ? Mods etc ?

I maybe interested if I can use my L Bug with Subie.

1303Steve ·

Hi

Any car can virtually run, you would need a CAMS licence, your car would be scrutineered for safety etc, you would need a helmet, neck to ankle clothing and fire extinguisher.

Steve

barls ·

im sure the boys at vforce would put one or two cars in

Guy_H ·

Sounds good as long as Golfs are allowed 😵

speedster356 ·

Yeah, sounds good Steve.

1303Steve ·

Hi

Guy of course the water cooled brigade are invited. At last years VW Nationals car show, 1/2 the entires were water cooled cars and many of them would hopefully be keen to run.

Peter it was taken as a given that you would run, it will actually be really good to have all the VW racers in one place.

Steve

t2 ·

how is this going to work ? will there be catorgories as in beetles / kombis etc or engine size ?
i would consider having ago at this in my ute but as its only a 1679 with a 34 pict 3 i dont think it will be very entertaining to watch , if there were some other kombis running with small engines now then it would be interesting and could be a good laugh

this is the link to the wakefield site
http://wakefieldpark.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37&Itemid=55

1303Steve ·

Hi

Thanks for the photo.

The classes will be along CAMS guidelines, so no special classes for different model VWs, we can't cater for every model but if you have run you will have ball and I guarantee that even a "ute but as its only a 1679 with a 34 pict 3" can get out of shape.

The cars will however go out in groups with approximately the same speed, so slower cars with slower cars etc

Steve

Craig Torrens ·

so I can run a Lancer EVO then 😂

hellbugged ·

only if you like loosing Craig😉

Craig Torrens ·

oh I dont think so 😀.................and I know how quick beetles go 👍

Brad ·

Craig Torrens wrote:oh I dont think so 😀.................and I know how quick beetles go 👍
you might know but do you still have one that isn't to pretty to drive ?

amazeer ·

I'll be in it Steve. I'm driving your car.

I dont know first hand how it works, but you can run at Wakefield under AASA permit and licences. Would be cheaper.

vassy66T1 ·

I'd love to think that my 54 Beetle will be on the track by then. (note to self: late nights and weekends must be happening)
If it is I will make the trip ... sounds fantastic!!

1303Steve ·

Which one, the Prado or the Hi Lux? I'm hoping to have my new bug ready for then, aint nobody driving that but me.

Steve
LOL.........yeah right, maybe for the 2014 supersprint ! hehehe

1303Steve ·

Hi Craig

You have to have a dream, only a few things to do before paint now.

So are you going to have a run, if all you have got is an EVO, I guess that will have to do?

Is there nothing better in the museum?

Or are you hill climb guys reluctant to run with another car near you?😂

Hi

That was my attempt at giving Craig a serve, sorry if I hit anyone else.

Steve

Craig Torrens ·

yeah a weak attempt at that 😂

VWMA Editor ·

Hi Steve,

Open wheelers allowed? My Fvee will be ready by then.

1303Steve ·

Hi Craig

They are more than welcome.

Steve

pete wood ·

might be interested. what would be the cost?

Guy_H ·

I'm In!

Let us know if there are any available practice sessions (like the day before) as well - for us "out of towners"

i have mentioned this to a couple of kombi friends and they seem to be keen, should be a couple of nice slow 1600cc split buses getting around the track if all goes well

1303Steve ·

Hi

We are only hiring Wakefield for the Saturday, let me talk to them about private practice before hand.

We are only trying to break even with the event, it will cost Club VeeDub around $7000.00 to run the event, we guess the entry fee will be between $120 - $150, it depends on how many cars we have running but as were talking about VW drivers we want to keep it as cheap as possible.

We are still ironing out all the details, but from the response so far, I think that the event should be well attended.

Steve

Sides ·

Guy_H wrote:Let us know if there are any available practice sessions (like the day before) as well - for us "out of towners"
Guy - after seeing your Lakeside video's, you're too much of a quick learner to need practice !!!

I on the other hand need all the steering time I can get....

😉

Steve - the $120-$150 price point sounds reasonable I reckon, and although I've never driven Wakefield I'm sure it'll be a hoot.

👍

mactaylor ·

yeah count me in car should be on the track by then. I think you can run with a aasa licence at wakefield but if you guys are cams affiliated then it could get interesting.

vw54 ·

think you can run with a aasa licence at wakefield but if you guys are cams affiliated
YES the event will be CAMS affiliated

Cam ·

This should be a really fun event. I'll definitely be doing my best to get there.

amazeer ·

Not real fussed Steve, but since you're giving me a choice I'll go the Hi Lux. Should be able to find a couple of WSCC members to have a run there as well.

hellbugged ·

oh dear Steve..............i've seen your driving before😀

..............can a car be entered with two drivers ?

1303Steve ·

Hi

Multiple drivers shouldn't be a problem.

I just spoke to Wakefield. They sometimes have private practice during the week, it all depends on track bookings, they should be able to tell us about 2 months before hand what will be available.

There is limited villa accommodation available at the track,
5 Villas available: (Club VeeDub has booked 2 alreadyfor Friday night)
6 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Large Lounge Living Area (per Villa)
Accommodates 2 People per room ( 12 persons per Villa)
Cost: $60 per person per night
Utilities:Bed Linen and Towels provided, Kitchen: Bar Fridge, Microwave, Kettle, Clock/Radio, Tea/Coffee

i tried to find some info and prices for cams licences or any other license i could get so i could have a go at this , wasn't very lucky does anyone have a link ,looking for the cheapest legal license as it will only be used at this one event ,so don't want to spend $100 just for the license if you know what i mean
cheers

Level 2 speed is the minimum for supersprints. $95. What you may not know is that you MUST be a member of a cams affiliated club to get a cams licence.

1303Steve ·

VWMA Editor wrote:Hi Steve,

Hi Craig

Apparently open wheels are not allowed to run with sedans, so you will only be allowed to race with other open wheel cars on the day.

Steve

Guy_H ·

Will try to round up some more Golf's for the weekend to help fill out the numbers 😵

Is there camping available at Wakefield?

Otherwise - who wants to share a cabin on Fri nite?

well, its not too hard, just a matter of doing a membership form, licence form and entry form, but I admit its an expensive days outing.

VDU.88A ·

Sounds like a good event put me down for it too I'll give it a go.

Glen Wouldn't mind doing the camping thing but if its not available and your keen for a cabin put me down for that too.

amazeer ·

Apparently a formula holden is interested in turning up. I've said OK, so long as she moves over when the formula vee's want to pass 😉

For those who have tried 10-20 seconds drag racing and think it was good fun/fantastic well figure on 4 flying laps at a time, (4 to 5 minutes) with brakes and corners thrown in. Drag racing is lame.

sounds like youve got similar ratios to my box, should be runing close to 224ks @ 6500 top. at Eastern Creek next month, will be a busy month wakefield on the 3rd of may then the creek on the 17of may and the vw nationals supersprint on the 23rd of may.geting plenty of r and d in Rudi

fullnoise ·

I'm about 90% sure I'll make it to the Supersprint.

Well done for Club Veedub to organize it. I hope we get enough entrants.

I did a 1:16.0 at Wakefield back in 2003. I haven't run there in a few years and didn't beat that time until the Dutton Rally in 2007 where I managed a 1:15.0. Hopefully a 1:14 is on the cards.

It's a great track. My favourite.

Jake's in. Paul is a maybe. Hopefully Colin can get the day off. Rod Penrose is building a car for the event, from scratch. Rudi is in. John Ladomatos might be an outside chance too in his recently built L bug.

I suggest everyone gets to Goulburn on Friday arvo and we all go out to dinner or for a drink on Friday night? How about it?

rose ·

I'm going to race the 70 bug so you all can have a laugh.
I have a six stacker cd player so I'll be right something to listen to while I'm racing around the track just like the stig 😂😂

vw54 ·

good work Rose good to see you there

amazeer ·

did someone mention drink? i'm up for that.

It would be good to get as many cars down there on friday as possible. That way we could do some pre event scrutineering and start earlier. The earlier we start the more runs we get,

trickysimon ·

What is the plan for starting times and finishing times at the moment? (Sunday show and shine as well)

Mick058 ·

Can we come watch the sprints? What time does racing start? its only 1.5hrs from Sydney right? Down the M5??? i'd be keen to come watch for a little.

amazeer ·

The event is scheduled to start at 9:30. That is going to be a tough ask if we cant get a lot of cars scrutineered beforehand. That is the aim though. The event will finish at 4:30. Cant really go beyond that because Club VW need to get back to farifield to set up for the show.

Its approx 1.5 hours yes, and spectators are invited to come and check it out.

bigrudi ·

any idea how many entries in so far cheers Rudi

Captain Cockatoo ·

At $150 per entry , I don't think it will be full
🤪

amazeer ·

Check out the event website www.clubvw.org.au/supersprint
It has a list of entrants so far. At this point in time its current as of Tuesday.

Re the crack about the cost of the event, I think you will find it is on par with other events of this nature. Ask Greg Ward or Glenn Torrens how much they paid to run at the Bathurst Hillclimb and how much track time they got for their money. 4 x 30 odd seconds. They'll get over 4 minutes per run at Wakefield for a similar price. Ask people how much they pay for Warwick and how much track time they get. I think you find that the Club VW SuperSprint is bloody good value by comparison. Club VW wont be making any money out of the event. They need 33 just to pay for the track hire. Add cost of ambulance, rescue and recovery, cams affiliation, permits, trophies etc.

76bug ·

just a quick question, why is clubvw only running 4 lap stints? most event ive been to at wakefeild they do around 10 laps 10 cars per group roughly 5 groups.

vw54 ·

At $150 per entry , I don't think it will be full
you obviously have never run an event or hired a venue

🤪
obviously never had any motorsport experience before. $22 for go karting doesn't count.

I'd pay even more if it was asked, purely for the fact that it's a vw event. In 11 years of supersprints I have never done a vw organised event.
My recolections have to go all the way back to the mid 90's, watching Craig, the Mullers, Stan etc at Amaroo. It was one of the best things I had ever watched, shits all over the drags.

Massive thanks has to go to Dave, Amazer & club veedub for sticking their necks out.

regards
Jak

pS should see how much the Porshce club charge.........& it doesn't include a porsche in the entry fee.

vw54 ·

Massive thanks has to go to Dave, Amazer & club veedub for sticking their necks out.
thanks for that Jak but there are many others as well Steve, Herb, Hicko and Rudy and John L for the enthusiam

amazeer ·

just done a quick search on google, first page of results only.

19th Oct HSV ran supersprint $140, 4 laps
15th Feb AROC ran supersprint $170 3 laps
8 March WRX club ran supersprint $150 entry fee, 3 laps
19th Apr NSWRRC ran supersprint $130 members/$150 for non members 4 laps
5th May MX5 club will run a supersprint, $150, 4 laps.
23rd May ClubVW $150, 4 laps.

We're running the normal amount of laps, for a normal price.

Captain Cockatoo ·

its about on par then😎

Craig Torrens ·

How much would it cost if you do 15kph over the speed limit on the road, and get caught ???

Cam ·

$150 was the cheapest sprint I've come across down here (vic) of late. Looks like damned good value to me, unfortunately I will be really struggling to make it 🙁

amazeer ·

Went down to Wakefield yesterday for a bit of a reconnaissance run to Wakefield yesterday. Superb venue. Almost no chance of hitting anything solid. You'd have to have the most monumental 100m tank slapper to hit the only armco wall which is along pit lane. There's heaps of undercover pit garages, unlike at Oran Park. The food from permanent cafeteria is easily edible, unlike most race tracks. There's proper seating and clean toilets unlike most tracks. Even a kids playground apparently, though I didnt see it.

There is only one problem. Lack of entries. There's only 3 weeks to go, If you are going to do it, you need to do it soon. Dont forget the early entry fee runs out in 2 weeks. You'll be hit an extra $30 after that. The number of entries is disappointing so far. The number of entries received from all sources is less than the expressions of interest received from this forum alone.

I'm on my knees begging, please spread the word about the event to anyone who might be half interested in turnng up. Doesnt have to be a Volkswagen, any make of car is welcome to come along.

vw54 ·

Or the over head view

amazeer ·

Double posting this on the other supersprint thread but...

If you are holding off on sending forms in for the supersprint while you wait for licence or club membership details, there's no need. Send the forms off now with blank spaces or tba in fields you dont know and we can sort it out later. Its more important at the moment that we know the numbers of competitors than licence numbers.

Cheers

Damo, I don't have any that go around corners anymore 😂

Besides, if i was going I wouldn't be driving a vw !!!!

Pity about the low numbers.....this will be a great event.

where's Ben Durie, Grant Cook, Heath Campbell, Greg Ward, Nathan Abbot, Wayne Penrose, Boris from Vintage, Dak to the future !

I've been pretty quiet about the sprints, since I'd ended up with family commitments that weekend. But it now sounds like I may be able to juggle things slightly.... so there's a possibility...

GREAT SIDES!.....and don't take it to hard, i've been hassling everyone so the event will fill and we can do it again next year..more the merrier!

yes, my concern about the low numbers is that this might be a one off return to racing at the Nats without a decent response......C'MON it's such a great learning experience no matter what size engine or handling specs.......surely learning how your car handles in a safe enviroment is worth the time and effort.

last year i couldn't believe the size of the grid at Warwick, yet the couple of cicuit events that are put on at great time and expense on behalf of the organisers struggle big time......add up the seat time!!!!........i like Craig T's thought on how much $$$$ would the coppers fine be if caught testing your new donk or handling improvements on the street🤘

Wayne Penrose is taking 3 cars, Boris is running in Georges car. The others are invited. One or more got personal invites.

I have been building a car to compete at this event for the last 4 weeks and am almost done .This has been a ground up rebuild and I will be out testing this weekend and if all goes well should be fun next week .I will keep an eye out for all of those Mack Trucks this time . I am not a would be racer and support the vw scene no matter what . To claim to have so much hp and to have a so called good record of driving skills I would have thought Torrens would have been the first person to have entered . Maybe he is frightened off by the competition of other good drivers and cars , ROD.

1303Steve ·

Hi

Gees that looks good, glad you saw the light and went with the most aerodynamic model bug.

Take it easy with the testing, plenty of time at the track to go hard.

May the struts be with you,
Steve.

Craig Torrens ·

Nice Car Rod and I love the color. And you're right I'm waaaay tooooo frightened 🥲......I've seen how you drive and its awesome, there's no way i would have the skill to slam into a parked Mack truck.😂

Evo is a Dirty word

Craig Torrens ·

There is absolutely no way i would have the skill to do this !

amazeer ·

Guys, you're killing the romance in here.

Going to be doing some cross posting with this one, but one last request.

If you havent already got a CAMS licence, you should bring your completed form along to the event, along with CASH PAYMENT.

Sending it off to CAMS now wont give them enough time to turn it around and post it out to you. If you have already sent it in, and havent got it back by next Thursday, ring CAMS member services and ask them to fax you a confirmation.

The early entry fee cuts off on the 16th technically, then goes up to $180.

Could you send your entry in with anything you dont know left blank. If you're fair dinkum and let me know your entry is in the mail before then, we can let it slide. Anything postmarked after Monday will be bad luck. This is not to be an arse, but it helps us plan for the day better if we know the numbers. Cars need to be put into classes, allocated timers, placed into colour groups and running orders. The more we do on Sunday morning, the more it eats into your track time.

If you are going to leave it and pay on the morning of the event, it will be CASH ONLY.

This is to stop unscrupulous people cancelling their cheques after they have had their fun. A regular thing unfortunately.

Houndog ·

Rod.........what a big disappointment to do that to a racecar ie vw versus Mack. However when you get sick of trimming cars you had better come & work for me.In between eating pies I do not know how you can physically build a car in such short time...you'll have btter luck with this one.By the way you have got more than I will ever have as I wouldn't pick a fight with a Mack...good on you for having a real go !!!

bigrudi ·

hmmm nice Lbug rod very slipery looking forward to catching up dont forget to dial out the rear brake bias those willwoods realy bite hard on the arse, hear no evo, see no evo, speak no evo ,cheers Rudi

amazeer ·

Dave's at a committee meeting. But he is running his avatar. Its 1916, you should at least come and watch it. Will be interesting to see if Dave can race when he has to turn the wheel. Only ever seen him do straight lines.

ratbug ·

Just got my CAMS license tonight, yay, didn't take long at all. Can I email and direct deposit the entry to speed it up?

Also is there any track insurance you can get for the day? I plan to enter my near new wrx and although i won't be doing anything stupid and be cautious would hate something to happen. Otherwise I could still enter my subie powered Rat buggy (in current issue of VWMA) which i'm towing down to enter into the show on Sunday, but it handles like a boat which is why the wrx is more inviting...

I would love to be there but unfortnately my car is in 1000 different bits and as you can see from the pictures its missing a couple of the vital things to make it go forwards. Plus there is nothing for me to sit on (apart from milk crate), steering the thing, strap me in, stop me, protect me if I crash or stop the wind from getting in my hair.... Pretty much all there is is a body shell in one part of my shed and every thing else stacked up against the other side.

I was talking to Greg Ward the other day and he too would also like to be there but he is in China at the moment on work and will not be back until June. So worst luck for him. ..

It looks like you are going to have a really good event. Wish I was there racing.

no cage

bald tyres

broken clutch cable (today)

broken bulk head

......and 107HP now actually

Craig Torrens ·

so its a dyno skank is it ??

how long does it take to fit a new clutch cable ??

And I'm sure a hillclimb racer that lives up your way would lend you some tyres, considering they have new ones for nearly every state round 😎 !!!

Excuses, Excuses 🥲

Just stirring Daimo, hope you make it 😎

no, it's done 34000km

not long, if you have one

tyres too soft for a long trip

........but if it's that what it takes, YEP, i'll do it, no excuses!!.........see you there😂

anyways...there are plenty of reasons for wanting the race car there like, the amount of seat time so i can then start picking off hillclimbs i can make it to, Zane Unwin will be second driver and the track will suit 260HP and TALL gearing down to the ground!!!!!!!!!!....so the notch was picked up this arvo, I didn't offer any explanation, just took it away so at least i could do the final checks and sorting........still aiming for paint tho, even if it's done with a toilet brush 🤪

fun fun fun.......all about the fun and great people that make the effort to be there, entrants, organisers, helpers, pit crew and spectators alike......can't wait to catch up with everyone again

Hi Daimo,

I've entered the sprint. The engine isn't exactly progressing quickly. I keep getting distracted.

All I did on the weekend was add the oil pump and pistons and barrels. I'm still not sure which rockers I'll go with. I'm likely to run the engine in with 1.1s and then switch to 1.4s.

Either way it's all last minute. I can hear the mission impossible music.

Goulburn has had a lot more rain over the past few years than usual.

Current dam levels are here:

Two years ago the main dam (Pejar) was down to 2%. Some photos are attached. On one you can see the spillway over on the left and the tower way in the distance.

I can also tell you that the water that was there stank🙁

Team WPVW is ready for the supersprint and looking forward to catching up with fellow vee-dubbers .
Only 2 of our 3 cars will be attending as I have been quite ill with the flu and unable to get the turbo oval ready in time . The new front suspension was in and finished , swaybars and shocks , wheels and tyres , but engine is only half built and wont be ready in time .
The sports sedan has had the diff and gear ratio changed , engine serviced and put back on to unleaded racing fuel to comply with CAMS .
The formula vee 1200 of Chris Bolton has had the transmission overhauled and new tyres fitted and engine serviced .
Both cars are ready to go and I look forward to sharing the sports sedan with my 17 year old son Dean , this will be his first ever super sprint and first drive of the sports sedan . Should be very exciting for him .
See you all there .... Team WPVW.

Not sure how I'm going to go, because I dont breathe when I'm racing. Thats OK at Huntley because its only 27 seconds. Not too bad on a single lap of Raleigh. Daimo or Rod?

1303 ·

Great day, thanks to all that organised the event, it was awesome to see so many Volkswagens at one event and also people giving it a go for the first time.

Stand out for me had to be Greg Mackie, 60's beetle, king & link pin front end, swing axle close box street tyres, 1835 and 1.15 lap times. This guy has been racing beetles since 1961 and his skill driving a beetle showed. Proves that unlike drag racing you dont have to spend a fortune to be quick, just practice, practice, practice.........inspiring stuff.

Jak finally with some good R spec rubber (not slicks)and big brakes gave him some well desrved good times 1.13. That beetle of Zanellos is an absolute weapon and Rudy driving the wheels of his car. What a day!

well done to all the organisers and flag marshalls on a superb event .
What a blast !! an excellent race meeting surrounded by fellow VW competitors .
I only managed to complete 9 racing laps and my 17 year old son Dean completed 10 , due to a fuel system problem that developed in the WPVW sports sedan after filling the fuel cell with the new 102 octane unleaded racing fuel . A friendly warning to anyone who is contemplating using this fuel , it hates the foam that fuel cells and fuel tanks are packed with ( to stop fuel serge when cornering )and breaks it down to a fine foam powder . Steve Muller also suffered the same problem on the day using the same fuel . This blocked the fuel lines and fuel filter on at least 4 occassions .
I had to nurse the sports sedan around the track , short shifting and feathering the throttle as the engine was fuel serging badly and I didnt want to melt an engine . I was very pleased with the 1min 11sec time that I ran that left me 3rd outright behind the turbo charged sports sedan of Rudi'.
I am also very proud of my son Dean who had never driven a race car before , never been on a race circuit before , dealt with the fuel serge problems and handled it all with much skill and maturity . Dean drove an excellent time of 1min 19secs .
Well done to Chris Bolton , who drove the WPVW formula vee ( with the smallest engine in the entire field at 1192cc ) to an outright position of 15th out of 50 competitors and a time of 1min 15secs and well done to Ben Ford who also drove the formula vee .
To all other competitors , well done and thankyou all for making this such a good event .

I remember laughing, but I can't remember what at either? It could all be due to the lack of sleep and too much spanner work. Perhaps Paul remembers?

It's odd we're not that funny.

Really?..........Are u sure?

Daimo, was bad luck for the notch and yourself but you had a smile after your run in rods car and it looked great you overtaking lots of people and standing next to rod and seeing him get all competitive! its a credit to both of you he being a drag racer and you putting together a great couple of laps in an uknown car. by the way who owns the light blue ej20 powerd 1303?
The blue 1303 is mine, the car is actually for sale, low k's since conversion/rebuild and only driven on weekends.......

Cheers Paul

one came past as a yello flash..........didn't think you saw me😂.........

Nah Dave, to your credit, i was pleasantly surprised , it took a little while to come round when we both opened the throttles out of the hairpin.....that 1916 must not be too short in the power department❗

VWMA Editor ·

Well done Club VeeDub. Two days of VW action. Bring it on next year.

level51 ·

Congrats to all that were involved in the setup and running of the event. Bring on next year and more VW's !! Let us know as soon as possible with the dates of next years event so we can arrange sponsorship and Trade displays.
Looking forward to having a drive next year

yeah still in the garage getting their surge tanks fitted must be extra bracing required to hold the tank n struts in place

more power but i suspose the Orange car is what it is a daily driver but bloody great fun

Water Boy ·

Bummer I couldnt make it... Had fun at the Show on the Sunday 😊

Just woundering in total how many Golfs and other watercoolers were competting?

Also any pics of any of the Golfs entered?

bigrudi ·

not too many golfs there most were probably parked at krispy kremes top job to the guys that put the effort in to run on the day, you dont have to wait till the next nationals to have another run supersprints running most weekends by cams clubs . check out cams web site coming events, pick an event ring the race secretary and enquire most clubs will welcome you with open arms and you can have a run all cars graded fast with fast slower with slower just remember you are racing the clock if you can have a dice with another car well thats a bonus cheers, Rudi

Mick058 wrote:yes, as Simon said! was a 1916 right? It looked qicked, or maybe that was when Daimo was driving 😀 The was one run it had and it was hammering - looked real quick.
Rod ran quicker times than me
I was flag marshall at pit entry and I had a ball but if your the person that was in rods car with the 18 crossed out I would check the times again because you were visually much quicker in that car cornering speed and down the straight and the event will be on next year because due to this event lots of new members joined club vw motorsport and if you all get behind the club and the event there is no reason for it not to be on

We'll be there next year; we've already started gathering (small) bits & pieces to prepare our car 🤓

that's the way Cam!!...........i've been getting organised too.

good stuff at the back.....

right stuff at the front...........

all the bits stashed away ready to go........konis, whitelines, brakes, cookie cutters, some very bent front trailing arms and some gussets for the rears....add one ZF to the five speed and i'm good 🤪 😂

these arrived today to keep the buzz going long enough till build progress motivation takes over........

warming up.....

round Birchal and inside Rosie......

and off after Sides and the wrx.....

thanx again Rod, it is an inspiring ride..........I'll return the favour next year

That guy in the first video really likes fences

Cam ·

I only have two words: Build Thread!
A year sure seems awfully short when I start to consider the end to end of it all; I've got some koni reds already, but am lacking pretty much everything else that should go on an IRS/Balljoint 'dub to make it stick, go & stop.

Proves that unlike drag racing you dont have to spend a fortune to be quick, just practice, practice, practice.........inspiring stuff.

cooool, missed that one........evidently link/swingers are a lot of fun, even if your an old hand experienced, winning racer 😎

amazeer ·

I think Greg holds a 6 year old class record at Huntley Hillclimb too. In a porsche though. Unless its a different Greg Mackie.

76bug ·

could be the same guy, the greg mackie referred here is from bowral.

Kombi_Rescue ·

yes this is the same Greg Mackie.....Greg has raced all his life and in his late sixties can show many of us a thing or two. This engine puts out 120bhp at the rear wheels and is running only a low 8.0=1 compression ratio. The brakes are standard 1200 bug with alloy fins attached to mthe brake drums to aid cooling and reduce brake fade. The bug was bought in Canberra about 4 yeras ago wher it sat for over 15 years.Gearbox has a close 3rd and 4th gear with a beefa diff .Greg has run this bug for 3 years running in geardays and shown a clean pairs of heals to much better and more advanced machines. The next moves to improve the bug is to reduce the amount of front wheel tuck-in as the lower trailing arms and king pins love to flex.Think you will see Greg compete a lot more club level motor sport....cheers steve

Hi there,my name is Greg Mackie. My ears have been burning lately, so I thought that I should clear things up. Steve has got it pretty much spot-on, although it was 1961 when I started racing a Beetle - earlier it was dinkies, bikes, billy-carts,etc. The Super-sprint at Wakefield Park was great, however having a Mini with FTD really is NOT ON! This goes back a long way for me, and don't be surprised if you see a Mini-beating Beetle appear very soon!!! Cheers, Greg

amazeeer ·

I had a drive of the super brick mini yesterday at wakefield. Awesome little beast. Its a 5 speed 1.6 litre go kart. Incredibly easy to drive. Pity it doesnt have more power to go down the straight. I was running against all sorts of differnet cars AMG mercs an M4 BMW, few other shit boxes. Even in my nervous hands I didnt get overtaken. I could sit up the arse of the merc around the whole track (too scared to overtake) until we got to the front straight and he'd blow my doors off.

I had 2 x 20 minute sessions, strangely I drove it heaps better in my first session. Dunno what happened there. Too confident maybe in the second. And then some twit in a turbo fiat blew a hose or something and didnt get off the track. There was oil everywhere. Took well over an hour to clean up and I didnt get another go in the mini. Spent 40 minutes on track driving and near 80 minutes pushing a broom. Not happy.

I then took my dead standard 240,000km lancer on skinny balding street tyres and managed to spin it several times in 4 or 5 laps. I came off embarrassed. Dont know how Jim Richards can do it all the time. It felt like I could walk the track quicker than the lancer could drive. Could almost keep up with one of those Lanos rent a racer things on race tyres though!

^ months to go until the next Nats sprint. There will be 2 honda powered minis there next time...

im racing a k&l beetle and have just modified the beam by cutting the ends and welding them on a angle using a protractor to get the angle right. we had no issues with fitment of steering box etc, we welded more tubing arount the welds etc to beef it up and made lower beam braces aswell... seems to work a treat...
