Thinking about bringing my young fella along for the day (5yr old), will the dyno operator have any issues with a kid in the workshop? Anyone else bringing kids along to watch?

Cheers
Brendan

Hi Brendan

It's just like taking kids to any show, they are under your supervision at all times.

NuZo ·

ok i cant come! beelte #1 is in shop for a new starter Beetle #2 was in an accident and i dont want to drive it till this shit is sorted....

Sorry ladies n gents! NuZo is missing out on this one :'(

Mick058 ·

Sydney cruise consists of 2 at the moment 🙅 is there no one else keen to take their VW for a Saturday drive?

Are people to busy talking about their cars rather than driving them and showing them off a little? 🙅

People complain that there is no 'scene' and not enough cruise's etc, and now there is one and no one's keen. If the dyno ain't your thing fine, come for a drive and attend a day that Rose has put a lot of effort into 😬

Are we enthusiasts or tyre kickers?

***here ends the rant***😀

donn ·

Buggy kicker here, still working on the genie / alternator thingie swap (only been 2 weeks or is it 3)😠Oh yeah and won't have the new tyres on till Saturday, not realy cool driving (if I could) on one skinny and one fatty🤓

Craig S ·

I'm trying to get there, including the cruise from Sydney, my wife's roster request was granted, I found someone to fill in for umpiring in the under 10s, but I've had a gastro bug since Monday, and I'm not sure how I'll go on the drive. Final decision probably won't be made until tomorrow night.

I am very keen to find out how many horses Gwendolyn has left before any mechanical improvements are made on her.

Cheers

Craig

rose ·

Come up for a nice drive with the guys no rush then afterwards you can take the kids for a cruise to check out the sites of Newcastle and the beaches make a day of it.

At this stage I am all go.👍

The young fella has had his wings clipped by his mum, this was his first full week of big school & she reckons that big day out in the heat will be to much for him (she's probably right). So I will be child free which will make it easier for me but I'll probably feel bad all day cause I've gone dubbin with out my main man.😢

I think I may also have another another 2 beetles coming with me from the Taree / Forster area.😎👍😎

Anyone else going from north of Newcastle?

Hopefully see ya there

Brendan

PS. Rose, VWCOOL has asked me to leave a sway bar with you & Ian if he doesnt get there himself to pick it up. Is this OK with you?

hellbugged ·

👎 i'm out guys........work mates got a busted back, so no one left to cover if i'm not there.......... was looking forward to getting out and catching up with a few old people + meeting some new ones.........apologies Rose🙁 and good luck to all.

rose ·

A big thanks to all that turned up you all make the day. And also the guys that came from Sydney and Nambucca especially hope you all had a safe trip home.

Hope to see you all up at our next cruise in May and it's a lot nicer weather than.

The guys at Carline where great bunch of mechanics the day went off well hope to do it again soon we need to beat the amount that they have there when the commodore club come they get over 40 cars.

Come on guys we can beat this next time.
We had 14 on the Dyno and a few more came along to watch it was a great day heaps of fun.

Great pics!!

Especially love the view of the water .. have ahppy memories of a couple of years living in Newcastle at Merewether.
Well done to all for braving the heat 😎

dangerous ·

What was the highest VW power Rose?

rose ·

I don't think anyone got over 80hp for the day.
From 1500 - 2200 vw engines on the day.

If this isn't correct I'm sure someone will let me know. As I was a bit busy taking pics, videos and organising bbq.

dangerous wrote:What was the highest VW power Rose?

Great day out in the dub, thanks to Ian & Rose for doing the leg work once again to organise this sort of happening.

I'll put some pics & my results up tomorrow some time.

I took the oportunity on the way down from Taree to reaquaint my self with Buladelah Mountains, what a blast, havent driven through there since the new road went in. It was great to stretch the old girls legs through some twisty stuff for a change. That is a great piece of road. But a bloody hot trip home.

Also good to meet a few more guys from on here, hopefully catch up at another time & place.

Cheers

Some pictures from yesterday, most are pretty similar to those that have already been put up.

My car on the dyno

Powering up

My results, not to bad for an engine thats basically stock.
Can some one explain how the Air/Fuel Ratio read out works & what it means to me?

mickmick ·

Great pics. Hopefully next time i won't be working. I wonder how much power the old girl makes.

Bizarre ·

Brendan

57 ponies out of a stock motor is damn impressive

I "thought" the magic number was 13.8 - which would mean you are a tad lean up high

Well done to those who participated.

Shame i coudn,t make it. Maybe next time.

And I also missed the guy in the grey bug does anyone know who he is?

Lee I'm glad you enjoyed the video you might come along to our next one that I was thinking about holding in June or July when its heaps cooler for the vee dubs.

looks good power and fuel curve.........yeah tad rich up high, but not bad...........12.5-14 makes good HP for me........

Roses sheet bit weird but can see where it matches fuel ratio...........bit of jetting work to do there Rosie........what carbs and jets on the day?

rose ·

Running twin 44 delortos.

My slack motor mechanic said there fine how they are, straight out of the box and put them on.😂😂 The box said suits 1600 - 2ltr 😂😂

The Dyno dude was having trouble with the accelerator pedal with the wheel.

I know I do need my carbie's tuned anyone know of a good vee dub mechanic to do them for me?😂😂

I might get Boris at Vintage do them for me next time I'm down there.

HEY VLK55Y

Air fuel on your graph it starts at around 14 14.7 is stoichimetrice or where all things being perfect it should be . As the vehicle ramps up you see the air fuel graph drop toward the 12's this just mean that as you push it the fuel mixture is getting richer you could probably change the main jets a size or to and possibly pick u p a little more power but then you run the risk of leaning out. I'd be happy with where its at

rose ·

VWCOOL'S bug had 65.7hp

Damo may know what the kombi did.

Great vid Rose, watched it yesterday. It's the air cooled guys that didn't make the vid or missed having their hp figures posted on the vid. Did vwcool run? What did Laurie's type 4 make....

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Yeah be interested to see what Laurie's Type 4 made as well.

rose ·

VWCOOL'S it's just an old bug he picked up with oversized barrells so he freshened it up and I sold him some old kadrons that he just bolted on to have some fun in to race. He had it at Valla.

rose ·

Damien may know what he did I'll send him a pm
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:Yeah be interested to see what Laurie's Type 4 made as well.

VWCOOL ·

For the record, my engine is NOT a current-spec Pobjoy, it is cobbled together from 20-year-old bits

Given the conditions (41C as I drove into the dyno driveway - not real good for grunt!) and my current state of tune, I'm pretty happy with "65hp" from my $1000 junker! I can drift it at 60MPH - gotta be happy with that!

matberry ·

65 rwhp from a 1915 with Kadies is ok, especiall if it only cost a grand, well done.👍

It's only that I'm interested to see how all the aircooled vw's went, so comon Laurie.....your next to fess up 😂

hellbugged ·

yeah, sent laurie a email, i'm not sure what he sung out to me from the car the other day..........normally runs around 80 hp, give or take........wll let you know

RED62E ·

The old dude in the hand painted hammer coat grey semi automatic stock standard from memory showed 58hp and surprised most watching. He saw an add for the day at the Belmont VW shop. After his run he jumoed into his car and off he went. Like the wind........
Was he really there ?????

That is excellent power.
What mods are done?
I assume it has at least an aftermarket exhaust?

Dangerous, I was chatting to Brendan about his car and he was saying that it is a stock 1300 with standard carbie, from memory it looked to have standard exhaust also. He put it on the dyno and pulled off that number....I remember turning to Brendand and saying I dont think its a stocker!!!

BAT69.. well said. I cant understand why people have to keep bringing up the pobjoy thing. At the end of the day it is an old VW motor who cars who built it, whats in it and the number it pulls....its just a number. Not to discredit VW engines at all, but in reality most of the street VWs at the dyno day are all within 25 hp of each other anyway (example Brendans stock 1300 with 56 and a 2.3 efi with 75 or 80 odd)..and even then do not go anywhere near the outputs of other modern engines. I think if your into VW's you should be happy for anyone that has had a go.
As far as melting heads, although not a pobjoy engine, CT runs his with high compression and the temp guage gets of the scale on the track and he has not had any problems in years.

Cheers

Paul

rose ·

The funny think is that Glen's kadrons came off my old engine that I had heaps of fun with, there was no killing it.

Both of those (stock beetles) with the 50 + hp did sound heaps good on the dyno.😂

RED62E ·

Rose's work to arrange a great day where those that bothered, or could, get there had a great time is being ruined by all this roid rage.
Except it for what it was. A day out with like minded people and burnt snags. That doesn't happen too often up this way.
Chill out........

rose ·

Our Morpeth pit stop cruise 3rd May is coming up soon so it would be good if you all come along its another great day out free bbq and a chat with other fellow vee dub people.

dangerous ·

Looks to me like everyone that showed up had a fantastic day.

The graphs showing the exhaust mixture is a big plus in my book,
that alone may be worth th drive down next time.

Although I have burnt my snag on a barby once before, so not to keen on that.
Who designed them at that height anyhow?!

Good effort to organize such an event Rose and Ian.

rose ·

Thanks Dave. Sounds good. It would be good to see your car on the dyno. Rob didn't burn all the snags 😂😂

You can call in on the way down to Portland for a coffee if you like.

It doesn't matter about the horses or killer wasp to me it's all about a get together to have some FUN😂😂😂.

Hope to see all of you guys at the next Dyno Day in Jun or July. Should be a lot cooler and be able to make a day of it.

I bought the beetle box stock as far as I am aware 7 yrs ago. Its a 72 1300 poverty pack, still had its drum brakes all round (which had never been machined), standard peashooter exhaust & oil bath air cleaner, so I cant see the reason why anything else internally would have been modified.

Only mods to the engine that I have done are late model air cleaner with K&N element, aftermarket exhaust, 034 distributor (which is supposed to have the same advance curve as the 009 but also has vacumn advance) with a basic pertronix or compufire (cant remember which one) ignition module. Ran it on Caltex 98 vortex for the day with 32 degrees maximum advance.

This is the exhaust I'm running.

If I go to the next dyno day might downsize the main jet to see what happens as far as air fuel ratio is concerned. Or I might have been inspired to try a few more bolt on goodies. We'll see what happens I guess.

Cheers
Brendan

colin ·

Instead of arguing about what combo or engine builder is better, why don,t we applaud ALL the guys that compete in speed events.

They are ALL representing these little cars we ALL love.

Cheers Col

Craig Torrens ·

Its not an arguement, it's a really simple question.

ratbug ·

My 2ltr n/a engine got 94Hp!!! It was built by someone in the Subaru factory in Japan, perhaps with the aid of robot.

Seriously though, all these arguments over power outputs, you can really only compare power outputs of two different cars on the same dyno. Different dyno's display different results, people even fudge the figures on the output of the dyno's. I will only truly believe one car has more output than another if its on the same dyno, same day, same operator, with the same configuration.

donn ·

second that

Super1302 ·

Seem's that the 1916's are coming in around at 65 ponies @ the wheels
seems to be the mark with not too much done to em.
Wouldn't you agree...

Till the next Dyno Post👍

Anyone Anyone!!!!!!

1303 ·

finally got around to getting my dyno sheet. Red was the first run at 185 hp with 10:1 A/F under boost and 82 degree intake temps. Blue was the second run after pulling some fuel out of the map under boost, got a little out of it at 192 hp with 11:1 A/F and 86 degree intake temps, did sacrifice a little down low, so may have pulled to much fuel at on the lower revs under boost..still has 150hp at around 4000rpm which is good for the track as I normally sit between 4000-6000 rpm.

Would be nice to have adyno for a full day and get things 100%.... or a stock ECU!!

Cheers

Next time you get to run this event could you please do the following and for any other dyno day this will help

make a list of all the entrants and include the following

Car type and redgo number, engine type, capacity, blown NA or injected, perhaps a pic of each car so we can identify whos who on the rollers

eg DB2882 bug, type 1, 1916 , injected this will help others when choosing what type of mods to do to there own car

Great work and a BIG effort to getting it all together

vw54 ·

1303 / Paul

What engine is in yr car ????

hellbugged ·

subie dave, subie 🥲

vw54 ·

yes i knew it would have 2B

1303 ·

yeah Subaru, doesnt really count does it?? Its an RS Liberty series eg around 1993 model engine, aftermarket ECU & standard TD04 with about 14-18PSI depending on how much boost spike I get....engine hasnt blown up........yet

rose ·

Will do for next time. This was just for a bit of fun we didn't realise it would be such a success and have so many actually turn up. So the next one should be a lot better and it will go a lot longer and have some extra runs as well. As it was to hot to stay around that day.

I did put up a video so you can see the hp that matches the car and you can hear which ones are subies.

Hope to see you all there for our Winter Dyno Day maybe Jun or Jul need to find a date that doesn't clash with other events.

nice figs m8...more tuning you will blow that fig away😎

hellbugged ·

Blue Kombi.........2000cc only reved to 5200 on this run.........pulls hard to 6400rpm, so more in it no doubt

matberry ·

Daimo, you'll have to Laurie to go HARDER....look at the power curve reaching for the sky!!!

dangerous ·

Any detailed specs on the Kombi motor.
Interesting dip in the power curve where it goes rich in the mid range.
My guess is the power curve would be even steeper if it was not so rich up high.
I'd love to see what the graph did up higher.
Nice stuff.

hellbugged ·

the first sheet had the fuel in the LEAN LEAN scarey lean!

yeah, he's had a dynoed in the mid 80 HP range before when it was run right out, but with different set up..........this one being still sorted.

44 webbers, 1800 (massaged) heads,non standard cam, M &W electronic ignition, extractors

yeah DB, digging the fuel log here too, next time, even if it's just to check accuracy of the CB perf guage i run

Heath ·

Daimo

From my experience if you can get the AFR above 12 the power graph dip will disappear, she'll just keep on powering on.
