That engine number doesn't tally with any I can find through a google search, but engine numbers starting with "B" with a generator rather than an alternator are Type I engines like in a Beetle. The 1800 and 2l are Type IV engines.

Just as mnsKombi said, I couldn't find a result *but* there were many variations including local numbering etc. There are people on this forum who dream in VW product numbers and will hopefully chime in. As mnsKobi said, 'B' engines tend to be Type 1 (i.e. used in Beetles/Kombis/Fastbacks etc) 1600 engines. Spares (NOS, used, remaunfactured, third-party) are widely available at modest prices, including cranks.

Thanks fellas
i will have another look on the weekend to see if i can see any more numbers if not i guess that i will just have to wait for someone to help out.
well this is all i know about the motor
i know that the flywheel face looks like this one below(with standard centre that uses a rubber o ring to seal onto the crank)
the flywheel is larger in dia then a flywheel from a 1200 (about 3mm or somthing like that)
it has a 200mm clutch plate
the generator is larger than the one i have on the 1200 motor
