here it is - my 58 dub. and here is the plan.
de-crome the body and paint it grey.
get it as low as (legallyish) i can, with 2' narrowed adjustable beam and adjustable spring plates.
extractors of course
she's been in a shed for the last 10 years before i bought it so i want to give the engine a quick overhaul as the 34hp runs rough. any sugestions on the usual things to do would help, i was thinking of new rings and head gasket? is it necessary?
i've got christmas leave now so i'm going to get stuck into it. should be a good practice for when i get an oval and put an 1800 and irs pan under one.
this forum is such a good influence!

they dont have head gaskets (as far as i know).you might not need to rebuild. does it blow any smoke, any ratles and bangs if not it could be ignition timing, a bodgy lead , or spark plug shagged points, coroded dizzy cap. blocked jets. hope this helps

That is a great looking beeltle. I love the paintwork and chrome as it is! Definitely lower it though.
(I can't talk because mine has been freshly painted - had to be done though because it had a crap repspray - can't wait for some patina to develop)

I have to agree, it looks great as it is. Spend your cash on period accessories and drop it !
bugking ·
yeah she blows smoke and takes a while to start, even with a new 6v battery. behind the rocker covers is pretty shiny so i was hopeing the internals were the same.
the respray is too good for a rat but not that good either. a friend of mine is an ex raaf painter and he is going to paint it for cartons. i'll leave the wolfsburg crest on the bonnet though.
cnfabo ·
yeah thats a wicked colour. have a play around with it on photoshop or something and c what those greyish brm's look like
on it. could look differnt.
good luck.
vwkg ·
Dude that looks awesome as is. All you needa do is lower it. Don't change the paint or chrome. Keep it as is👍
izac ·
yeah another a vote for leaving the paint as is... looks awesome, and will look sick when slammed 👍
stock smoothies would look cool or maybe some BRMs like Chris says or I reckon some Escras would be the tits!
but thats just what i would do, its totally up to you man its your car.... have fun! 🤘
izac ·
sorry couldnt help myself 🙄 just an idea
modulus ·
Between the sinuous front guards and the swooping decklid this is a very elegant looking vintage car.
Great to see it being brought back to road condition. Even with new pistons & barrels the engine work will not be expensive, relative to a complex modern car.
bugking ·
seems like I will disappoint a few people by painting the 58!
I didn't plan to paint it for a while, but the offer of a cheap paint job was hard to pass up. and the rest of the body is covered in surface rust.
spent hours daydreaming about colour combos, two tone black/white etc. I want to save that idea for an oval.
bugking ·
took the engine out today to check it out and give it a clean. not as bad as i was expecting. looks like it may have newer heads as they are a different colour- or is that normal? and the rockers are much shinier than my 68 i had years ago!
the heat exchangers and exhaust are rusted out. ill send them away to get fixed and get a new exhaust.
one of the leads fell apart when i pulled it out!
flywheel is worn from the starter motor, and a bit rusty around the edge.

Do you mean something like this ???
Kev
bugking ·
Yeah camo thats cool. maybe abit lower.
this is the look im after, with empi 5 spokes. does any one know the owner? - they read my mind!
bugking ·
progress today. nearly all stripped out. wasn't too hard as there was no interior when i bought it, just the seats.
only thing i couldn't get out was the wiper and headlight switches. frustrating.
start sanding next week
izac ·
looks good man 👍
phatratpat ·
gotta love the 58👍
h ·
hey
leave da body orig n lower is cool..
hmmm
Mountains Greg ·
That is one amazing original 58 I'd leave it as original as possible as well, Only paint/repair what you have to... A few period items and a little lower with a nice set of BRM's
Just my two bobs worth 😎
Greg
bugking ·
thanks for the interest everyone.
i wish the paint was original - i'd leave it. but she's had a respray thats not the best, with runs and cracks.
otherwise everything else will be stock. I've always wanted a bug that is clean, smooth and low. something nice to drive to work in.
this is the second beetle i've owned. here is the first- the most enjoyable car i've driven.
Mountains Greg ·
ahhh now that you mention it has had a very amateur respray I can understand why you would want to repaint it. It looks original in the photos. Photos always make things appear better then they really are 😂 I do like the colour though. I think grey is cool and would'nt mind a grey VW myself.
Whatever you decide to do with it should look great
Cheers
Greg

if you are still stuck with the switches try putting a precision ground tool (nail) through the hole in the shaft to get the knobs off. then if the escutchons are tight you could try making up a "bodge" tool like shown in the pics. i held it in a set of vice grips. please note if you don't get the angles sort of correct or don't hold it in the hole properly it may chew the eschutchon.

i just bought a house with a 58 bug included in the sale, it looks similar to yours except its white, pretty well rust free too, im wandering what to do with it, will have to see how yours ends up for inspiration🙂

😂 yeh well i did originally look at the car first🙂
bugking ·
sounds like a sweet deal.
bugking ·
Here is where I'm up to. All that is left to sand back are the doors and the inside. Now that I dont have any hard exams to study for I can finish what I started. The only disappointing thing is I cant find extractors for the 36hp. Oh well that just means I'll HAVE to get a 1600 or similar!
here are some pics of what has been lurking under the paint, someone elses handywork!
bugking ·
here she is nearly naked
bugking ·
Today the 58 went to the panel shop to get some rust cut out and welded. Ordered the paint aswell, Platinum grey, as seen on the new vw jetta. finally achieveing some goals. just waiting for mr rudd to buy me a new beam! will post pics when my phone/camera wants to talk to the computer! found some sample pics to compare....
trickysimon ·
Hey bugking.
My bro said his looking at your computer atm at Computer Dencity 🙂
Should go for a cruise some time when your beetle is finished.
this is the look im after, with empi 5 spokes. does any one know the owner? - they read my mind!
hey thats my beetle,i lowered it even more
bugking ·
Painted the 58 in the garage on the weekend, and i'm very happy with the result. So much so that i'm not going to recycle the old nuts and bolts! a call to Vintage will fix that issue. The next step is to put in a new beam and reassemble the jigsaw asap, without a careless srcewdriver causing any damage!
Excuse the rubbish quality of the photos but you get the idea. I'll take some in the daylight on the weekend.
bugking ·
and then..
Hey Trickysimon, small world! seems everyone i talk to lately has a beetle! turns out even my boss at work has one. Love to go for a cruise when shes done. Is there a vw club in wagga?
trickysimon ·
Yeh there is a local club. I keep forgetting to join it though 😂
well after many late nights the front end is together, with new beam, steering arms and tierods. just need to sort out the wheel alignment and bonnet geometry, it doesn't quite lock.
but here's the pictures we all want to see.
izac ·
looks great man that beam looks good enough to eat! 😎
colonel mustard ·
i wouldnt suggest doing that...
vwrallycar ·
just wondering, how much paint did you end up using and what was the cost? i had thought of painting mine in the same colour but the cost of 4 litres of the platinum grey was close to $700
bugking ·
I used Debeers paints/Octoral ( from Holland ) from the local ford dealer.
All up including sandpaper and plastic etc cost around $650
Still got about 1 ltr of base coat left and 2ltr of clear. Hindsight would tell me to use another litre of primer and not have large sections of old red oxide primer, because it had a bad reaction in places, which had to be resanded. Overall it is a really good garage job, which is what i wanted for a daily, but it wont win any prizes at a show!.
It was a great learning experience for next time.....oval!
vwrallycar ·
thats interesting, the price i got was for the 4L of base coat only, no clear which was another $200+
car looks the goods too, its such a nice colour on an old beetle
cesiumfrog ·
hey kingsley, from one backyard spray painter to another....nice job!
yes there is a small but keen local club, mainly social outings on a sunday plus the odd cruise to nationals or DOVW etc http://www.vdubber.com/groups/orca/topic/--2009-06-08.htm
contact me if you want details
phil
ps that colour is saying nice wheels and slam me.

yeah paint prices can be extreme. glasurit quoted me $2000 for primer, base and clear! which is fine if you have a show car. i guess debeers isn't considered a high quality paint, but it was easy to apply and nice and shiny.
bugking ·
It took an hour to get out, only 10mins to put back in!
bugking ·
The 58 went to the mechanic today to get a roadworthy done. Hopefully there aren't and dramas and i can finally take her for a drive in a week or two.
here are some of the latest pics
not sure if i want to put the over riders on....
trickysimon ·
Can't wait to see this around town 👍
bugking ·
Betty the beetle, as she has become known, got her number plates today.
I have to relearn how to drive a manual again, and how to drive a beetle aswell !
Im guessing it's normal to have such along time between changing gears, it's been awhile since I have driven one.
otherwise it is a pleasure to drive, for a car that hasn't been driven for 15 years.....
Ill post some better pics later on
Scarab ·
Nice work mate.....that is really looking the goods!! Well done!
izac ·
that is very cool man congrats!
paint looks schwwwwwweeeeet! 👍
bugking ·
I recently moved house to Nowra, so it was a perfect chance to take Betty for a roadtrip. I only planned to nurse her along at 80kmph since she hasn't been driven for years. But she wanted to sit happilly on 100! Until a slight upwards gradient that is, 90-80-70-60, then back down the hill, 70-80-90-100. Beetles' are fun aren't they!

Love the colour dude. Nice home job. When I get round to doing mine I'll have to remember to ask you what equipment you used to do the job 🙂
As for the paint cost, well I've recently heard of Debeers and seems like good quality. Dupont and Glasurit are good products too but rather up there own arses. Because they are so well known and respected they think they can charge more. Bit like Yves Saint Lauren really, I mean it's just a bloody suit that some poor pakistani has sewed together for 20cents.
Still I hope the Deneers turns out to be hard wearing 😉

Wow that looks really neat, its all about the cruzin when its finished I like it.
71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·
hey man thats looking good, there is now three bugs with preety much the same colour etc, mine is an alright quality but is quite good from far away but then isn super preety up close but its better than it was before. Here is a pic of mine,

Back in the game again, picked up a 1600 twinport the other day.
engine no. AD013126
Whilst I'm doing the 12v conversion aswell I thought of modernising the engine with an alternator and electronic ignition.
Any advice and other suggestions are most welcome!
DieSchnelleKafer ·
wow that progress was quick as!

Looks good mate👍
bugking ·
Did a quick test fit of the twin solex 32-34 PDSIT-2/3 today. I bought them off ebay awhile back for $70 alot cheaper than webbers! Found the manifolds don't line up with the locating pin on the heads, so looks like it's out with the power drill😂 The linkage looks like it should work (although it's somewhat 'lightweight!') Has anyone had any experience with this set up? all I could really find out is that the -2 goes on the left -3 the right❓
