Copper Head Gasket

Hi Guys,

When you use a copper head gasket, do they tend to squash up - or generally keep to the original thickness.

Cheers

Where are you using that?

As I understand it, it goes between the head and the cylinder.

It improves the seal and also lowers the compression. I saw them at .04" (1mm) and .06" (1.5mm).

is it a ring type gasket if so yes its suspose to squash but Vw did away with these years ago

the barrel should be lapped into the cyclinder head area this removes the need for the ring gasket

If its a copper flat ring thats as wide as the top of the barrell then depending on what compression you want
is wether its fitted or not also fitting these rings in the heads increases the possibility of leaks

Have you worked out the compression ratio

If you need to lower its better to fit the rings to the underside of the barrel

Hi David,

The compression is around 9.57:1. Ive lost my enthusiasm for high compression and was looking at the difference between cylinder spacers and the copper gaskets.

If the gaskets have a greater propensity to leak, then the spacers sound the better option.

... that's not high compression!

theres gaskets and theres shims

the shims wont crush as they're designed to be spacers
ive got some CB ones in my 1776
i had to decompress it when i put my supercharger on

most of the turbo guys on shoptalk that use them say they give a better seal for force fed motors

ive been more than happy with mine but im only running 10psi

How true BUT if you can put them under the barrel instead of in the head much less chance of having leakage problems
