Lining up the bolts.

I my post titled "Big Bolts" I made reference to the bolts on the "horns" carrying the engine mount not lining up, I find that I have to wedge them apart to line up the large bolts fixing the frame member to the horns (maybe these have a more technical title) is this normal, is there a way of doing it easily?
thanks

Bizarre ·

These are the bolts you are talking about

I just changed my cradle over from the crappy late style

to the stronger early one

Mine just fitted straight up

A "torquey" motor "can" twist the horns or your cradle may be bent
Do you have a spare cradle to check??

The one in the last pic is the one I have, no spare unfortunatly, was on the car when I bought it and the motor is prety well standard I think, sure hasn't been driven hard since I got it.
Thanks for the reply.
edit
that bracket you have at the back (guess it's realy more at the front🤓) is where I am fitting part of the tow bar assembly, there was nothing on it when I got it, does that mean I am missing something?

that bracket at the front of the gearbox is an addition..

I've never seen that late model engine mounts before..
the mounts look very good - for a standard engine etc...

a lot thicker than the early type...

I've never had any problems with those bolts either..
so the horns on My beetle are spot on...

I've had My gearbox mounts bracket off many times...

Maybe the horns do move with that late model bracket etc....
You could file the hole in the bracket until the bolt holes are aligned....

those later ones really are crap
i ripped mine off and put on a pre 72 one same as Barry did as well

the later ones have tendency to bend in the middle when ppl use them to jack the back off the car up
this can cause the bolts holes not to line up real well

is yours nice and straight still Don?

yep, and a happy new year to ya.
