How much gearbox oil?

How much oil does the gearbox/swingaxle take? It says 5.3 US pints in the manual - I think this is about 3.3 litres. Is this right?

2.5 - 3l or when it overflows from fill plug

i have heard that you know its right when you put your finger in the fill plug and can touch the oil.

Thanks fellas - dropped the old oil and put 2.5 litres in and it was just starting to flow out of the fill hole.
