Davo's drag buggy project

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/73866/davos-drag-buggy-project

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, I (David Richardson) will be taking on a meyers manx drag car project with limited fund's so any helpfull hint's would be most kind, ie: floorpan type to use? how much 'tube frame' can i get away with, turbo/non? i will keep posted about the whole project.

grogy ·

hi, is it street strip or strip only

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Strip only, so bare essentials 😂, I already own an off road buggy (manx copy) which is registered. This one is damaged (hit in the side) and cant track down any previous history so decided the strip was the best place for it

grogy ·

ive seen single seat in center of manx , pure drag car

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Henry Spicak used to race one back in the 90's from memory. turbo set up and was pretty quick too.

11CAB ·

I never saw Henry's with a turbo...

HotRodMatt ·

grogy wrote:ive seen single seat in center of manx , pure drag car
Then try and find a class it can run in with centre seating!

modulus ·

Hi David,

Get the ANDRA class rules and sift through them carefully. Your choice of class will determine issues like tube/floorpan chassis, turbo/na, capacity, type of fuel etc. and, in the longer term, how much you'll spend.

hth

pete wood ·

matt and modulus are on the money.

I thought about something like this a few years back. I wanted to try fitting the swb body to a full length pan or using a lwb body for better straight line stability and less wheelstanding.

re tube frames. a stockish pan (thicker floor and square tubes down the sides and under the seat) is easy enough, strong and cheap if you can weld. spend your cash on a decent roll cage coz if something goes wrong, that's what you'll wish for.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

cheers for the advice guy's, such speedy replies too, another question is swing axle or irs??? i have both available! Also braking, i was thinking 4 wheel disc's, the BIG BRAKES add in VWMA looks quite good, anyone tried them yet???

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

just writing 2 more post's so i can pm.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

ok that should do, by the way my avatar is only half that pic, i really suck at the pic thing on here ay🤪

13BVW ·

I run swingaxle still and drums all round still slows me enough although adjusting all the time sucks and am thinking disks might be the go

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

But is IRS a better option or not? my other buggy is IRS and seems to do pretty well off the line but it's only got about 68hp at the wheels, i hope to add like another 100hp into the picture for this one and i've heard swing axle is the go?

modulus ·

IRS gets you a better geometry (i.e. less camber change) through the range of suspension travel. However, IRS introduces CVs (one more thing to break), is somewhat heavier than swingaxle, and robs a tiny amount of horsepower due to the multiple drive re-alignments. My understanding is that, for those last three reasons, the drag dudes prefer swing axle. Different story, of course, if you want to go around corners.

hth

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

I was really hoping to use a 2L Kombi box, so i think IRS will have to do but i've also heard i can just fab Kombi cv's to beetle shafts. Would that set up hold together with say 160hp? (planning a 1916,or there abouts, turbo, carburettor and Big heads.)

OZ Towdster ·

Dave Dave Dave , between you and Mick you need a lesson in patients , that manx was always going to be abled to register , you just need to talk to the right people.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Kombi box with Kombi CV's would handle 160HP if set up correctly.

Brad ·

The Geko has a 2L kombi bow with Kombi CV's inner and outer. It has 101 RWHP and at Warrick a few years back in snapped two axles and shattered 2 CV cages.

The axles and CV's where old crappy things and it was no suprise. No liking to break stuff I just put 930's in it and have been flogging it stupid ever since without any issues at all.

I had the Box rebuilt by Dangerous and it is all sweet..

1916baja ·

OZ Towdster wrote:Dave Dave Dave , between you and Mick you need a lesson in patients , that manx was always going to be abled to register , you just need to talk to the right people.
I need the money and have no money to do anything with it.... As much as i would love to keep it, the timing is just not right. I think it will make a great drag car. I would rather see it on the strip than under my house for the next 20 years!

dangerous ·

Hi Dave,
you can use the bus CV's no problem.
I used them for many years before upgrading to a Commadore CV.

If you counterbore the CV so i fits on the axle properly, you can use axles from the LHS of an auto type three.

If you modify the axle its self it will become weak and fail at that point.
When an axle fails it will usually take a CV or two with it.

Another tip is to keep the axle and CV angle shallow.
This should keep the CV cage intact even with high power.

grogy ·

it depends on how much power u have and how fast u think u will go. the manx is much lighter and easier on trannys than beetles etc. i ran a 2180 wit 48ida high comp for years on a swingaxle trans wit close ratio gears beefa/diff, steel shifter forks , standard vw axles shotpeened and polished. i broke one axle in 5 yrs thats all. ran high 12s consistently

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Thanks for all the replies so far, it's nice to see such keen interest in this sort of thing.

I don't know if it's 'forbbiden' or not but i should probably mention that i'm selling my 99' YZ 250 MX bike ($3200) to help get this car off the ground if anyone knows anyone who might be interested, Contact me anytime on 0409875618.

p.s. I've enlisted some help from Rod Penrose to help steer me in the right direction.

Cheers Dave.....

Boostn ·

Swing Axle is the go.
long axles
Dave Butler
alloy spool
welded gears

One of the main reasons I use swing axle is so I can tune in the amount of wheel spin, depending on the track.

matberry ·

I'm running swing atm, and after the IRS in my old drag car I think it's much more reliable for a budget build, also easier to tune the launch.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

matberry wrote:I'm running swing atm, and after the IRS in my old drag car I think it's much more reliable for a budget build, also easier to tune the launch.

How is this achieved? (tune the launch)

Boostn ·

if the car hooks up too well at a good track, you can let the car down at the spring plates and make it wheel spin because of the negative camber only uses some of the tyre and not all of it.
Likewise if the track sucks you can dial the car up so the tyre is flat using all of it.

This method can also save boxes, because you can allow it to wheel spin a little instead of going home early with a broken tranny.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

so what would be the best transmission 'set up' for my buggy? (1300/1500 beetle?) for a 1915 turbo aplication.

I really need to sell this bike too if anyone is interseted?

cheers dave!

OZ Towdster ·

On that note is there a specific year floorpan i should be using? cos i have quite a few pans lying around that i could probably get started on!

Just like Nick says, and playing with bump stops (size and length), tyre press, front ride ht, amt of droop etc etc. all effect launch and car reaction.

As for the pan, I'd just pick the lightest, best condition.
Tranny, my bet, 1500 to start with, find a few close gears and a super diff and hd side plate and get DB to put it all together.

EASY❗

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's! Ok well, I have seleted a suitable floorpan from the vw grave land i call my back yard but having no body i'm unsure of the year and would like to find out. I t has a gear box in it with numbers 23 113 301 103 on the side of it??? Can anyone ID this?

dangerous ·

Have a look a bit lower don.
There should be a STAMPED code.

Pick one fom this list:

http://ourvw.org/TechTips/tech_tip_TransaxleCode.htm

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Dave, thanks for the advice but all i could find was a stamped code a bit lower but it was a number, it read 5834923??? the vin number is 5594983 if that helps narrow it down???

I should have some pics up soon of the state we found this pan and the body!

cheers Dave!

dangerous ·

That's the one David.
Pre 1967 in Australia they had no letter prefix on the stamped number(other than a few exceptions).
My guess would be that itis just an early(weak) 40hp box, and probably not much good (hard to say without a picture).

IF you can find one with a number beginning with 7,
or better yet one with a letter prefix,
you might be onto a reasonable base.

Ultimate would be late 1300, or 1500 beetle with recess and bush for 12 volt flywheel.

DB.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

I'm looking for a 1500 box to use and was going to call you Dave about maybe puting something together for me, could you pm me your number?

Also, should this pan still be fine for a starting point or not?

I have attatched a photo and it was successful but i can't see it??? anyone?

dangerous ·

That photo is there David.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

That's strange? I still can't see it on my computer, however i can see the pic's in my Members rides post???

So what do you think of the floor anyway? lol!

bajamat ·

its there dude i can see it to

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's,
Not much to report, just booked in at custom for stage one on the first of April. That will include shortening the pan i've got and making the tube frame floor sides with alluminium pan halves. The front end will go on when i get it back (no brakes) and in the mean time D.B. will be putting together the box, then that can be solid mounted plus hydraulic clutch and rear Disc's.

Good luck too everyone at Portland and wish i was coming.😎

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

All stripped down ready to go to Custom Vee Dub!
Plus a pic of the body where i found it!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

STAGE.1.
Hey guy's, sorry it's been a while but Custom Vee Dub have been very busy but i have just dropped the floor off to Dave and the boys and have all faith that it's going to come back awesome! They will have it over April while i am over living it up in the U.S.A. I will be back at the end of the month and will have a whole lot more to report!!!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, just a quick update. Well i have the body removed from the old twisted up floor (nearly fell off with all the rust!!!) and have started to gather some key items, like my genuine Gene Berg shifter which i got from Gene Berg enterprises in Orange CA on my recent trip to the USA. i'm still waiting for the actual floor to be finished at custom vee dub but as soon as i get it i will post some pic's of it and the body, (and the shifter!)

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

I now have sponsorship throgh my parents buisness Allpave asphalt servises, under 'Allpave Racing' so things should move forward a little easier now. This is still all new to us and i'm sure I will still be calling on support when I need it. There was even a mention of Craig and VWMA coming on board once i finally finish this project.

more pics soon when i get the floor back!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

My shiny new shifter and the body Free'd!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

OK Guy's, it's all starting to happen now, the floor is cut to size and the body, even though cracked and twisted, seems to fit preety good. started smoothing out the sides of the body and preparing to slice all excess fibreglass from the rear of the body. Once the body is bolted in place we will repair the damaged section and finalise seating position, then off to Custom again for the roll cage (Dave's got something crazy in mind???).

Mean while i sold my motorbike today and so therefore have the funds needed for a drivetrain! just got to find one now? or more than likely just build one from scratch with Dangerous.

Here's some pics of what i'm up to!

1916baja ·

Sick.....👍

Brad ·

Looking better than it did ...

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, Yet another update. I had a few discussions with the Muffin man over the last couple of weeks and have came up with quite a nice little pakage i thought.

I ended up getting on to a 76 single side plate box, with that and the swinger out of the pan i've used i have the specific internals and the tubes etc... needed for the new Rhino case we've orded. Internals being replaced are with Albins 1st and 2nd, with 1800 kombi 3rd and 4th for now,
Alluminium spool diff, Billet side plate with thrubolt, and more!

Undecided about Axles, apparently alot of guy's are breaking sway away's Dave said. Maybe a bad batch. Any other ideas on Axles?

Dave said he'd have it for me in about 3-4 weeks so progress will continue on the body for now so i can get it off before the box returns for fitting.

Cheers Dave!

dangerous ·

...but still waiting for the Rhino and side cover to leave he USA.

Albins gears are here too.
Perhaps some pics of them tomorrow.

Went for a 3.00 first gear and 2.00 second,
to go with the L-bug 3.875 crownwheel and peanut.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Very nice indeed!

trickysimon ·

Could you use a spool in a street car or would the tyre wear be too great? Looks good btw 👍

dangerous ·

trickysimon wrote:Could you use a spool in a street car or would the tyre wear be too great? Looks good btw 👍
Hi Simon,
tyre wear would be the least of your worries on the street.

The biggest concern would be the shocking understeer.

I know some guys that run them for street use,
but it is quite dangerous if you are not alert ALL the tme.
With the VW's light front suspension it can push straight quite easy.

For you, a superdiff and side cover would be the best and only 2/3 the price.

dangerous ·

Here is a comparison of the Gleason 3.875 pinion head on the left,
and an early 4.375 pinion on the right.

dangerous ·

Here is the Albins mainshaft with early VW needle bearing installed where third gear will be.

And some comparisons in tooth size with stock gears.

20bkombi ·

looking good davo, coming along well.

hey Db , so the stock pinion is cut by a klingenburg, yeah?

Will it be ready for Warwick?

dangerous ·

Hi Aaron,
you have an eagle eye there dude.
that 4.375 is actually one that was made on an Oerlikon machine.
I is a very similar tooth form to the Klingelnberg, being a thicker tooth at the heel.
Most 4.375's were gleason,
but the Australian ones in the mid sixties were Oerlikon.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Aaron, thanks man, it's good to hear from you dude. It's definantly starting to take shape although D.B. is just making me look good at the moment 😂 and looking very nice Dave by the way. This buggy won't be ready for Warwick but I will be racing my yellow buggy again with the new and improved 1641cc engine!

See you there!

Cheers Dave!

It must be like Christmas most days at your place Dave...🙅

dangerous ·

YES, today was a very busy day and all sorts of deliveries of spiffy parts came.

Unfortunately I had to wait until the end of the day to unpack things:

These are for swingaxle,
but I also got in a couple of Billet IRS side covers too.
....pretty nice!

dangerous ·

Today I set up the crownwheel and pinion.
First i set the pinion depth and backlash to factory specs:

This is the drive side:

This is the coast side:

dangerous ·

I then replaced the stock diff centre(required to ise the VW genuine tools),
and reset the backlash to .004".
This moved the "drive" pattern more toward the nose, but the pics i took weren't as clear as the above pics.

Also today added an extra stud to the side cover,
and made up a modified clutch fork and bronze bush,
so that i could squeze in the L Bug clutch fork and arm(fat 20mm size),
into the Rhino case that normally only fits the 16mm shaft.

Like this one:

Lots of cleaning and setting up of gearstacks,
but more pics tomorrow!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Looking Really nice Dave, Cant wait too pick it up!

dangerous ·

Unfortunately my Camera has died with all the pics on it.
I was able to use a mobile phone and send a couple to my email address.....but they are small.

The gear stacks are using the Albins 3.0/2.0 gears,
and 1800 bus gears for 3rd and 4th, and look like this:

Note the chromoly pinion bearing retainer to stop pinion movement.

The reverse gear was narrowed to clear the wider 2nd gear:

Modified with extra stud in side cover:

Machined nose cone and steel thrust plate to retain the mainshaft bearing:

Some more:

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Awesome Work Dave! I will be picking this box up tomorrow,I will have to source some Heavy Axles, then clean up the axle tubes and fit them. Mean while I have dropped off the adjusters needed for my front end too custom vee dub and will have that back next week, this thing will be rolling before i know it!

Any advice on Axles would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers Dave!

dangerous ·

I did speak with ERCO regarding SAW axles, and he said both themand the EMPI are both made in china.
He said the EMPI is better than the chnese SAW, but probably only good enough for a 12 second car....but still way better than stock.

Apparently RANCHO have somehing in the works, but that will be some time.

The other option is the KARPIOLA from Finland I think.

Hey guy's, just thought I'd throw up a pic of the rims I just purchased from Rodney! They are 15x4 fronts and 15x6 rear, spun alloy outer with Billet center's. He's also sending up a Scat solid mount kit so I can get these wheels on!
Also mounted pedals and shifter in stock position for now, I may move It all back, just got to wait and see how much room I will have for the extensive cage going in.
Feels pretty good actually so I may just leave it.

More pic's soon, Cheers Dave!

dangerous ·

HOLY COW MAN!!!!
They look awesome!

1916baja ·

Sick! you should post a recent pic up of the doodle racer 😀 particularly of the awesome bonnet graphics....

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

OOPS, I already have taken some more shots and didn't even realise I got your very indecent chalk drawing in them😂

1916baja ·

he he... indecent? more like a work of art! that sort of stuff really adds value to the vehicle you know.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's, update time. I have mounted the box with the Scat solid mount kit I got from Rodney and have just the front and rear mounts in at the moment with the 'Mid' mount only bolted to the gear box. I will weld this onto the forks of the floor pan then simply unbolt the gear box from the mount to remove it. The front mount will only be used to line it up then it will be removed as there is no need for it. I have just put the stock axles in for now and will be upgrading them along with the brakes later on$$$$$! kind of at my limit for a while.

I also have the front end adjusters in, however I think I need the dropped spindles aswell?

Here are some pics of the gear box mount's and the car on some old rims!

1916baja ·

oh man, that looks hot. Yeah go lower! is that as low as the adjusters will allow?

1916baja ·

oh man, that looks hot. Yeah go lower! is that as low as the adjusters will allow?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Yes Mick, that is as low as she'll go and it has a 20L drum of diesel under the bonnet. The dropped spindles will allow me to drop the car further but then wind the adjusters off the bump stops and gain at least some suspention travel!

1916baja ·

you told me all this, this afternoon at your house! 😂

chunks54 ·

Hey guys, whats the reason for the extra stud in the side cover, and what determined its position?

Thanks

chunks54 ·

And niice project btw!

1916baja ·

That looks like a question for dangerous! I'm sure he'll see it sooner or later 😀

dangerous ·

chunks54 wrote:Hey guys, whats the reason for the extra stud in the side cover, and what determined its position?

Thanks
The position of the extra stud is mid way between the others,
and is at a point that is most likely to lift off the side cover under load.
Anything that can be done to keep the crownwheel in mesh with the pinion is a "plus".
The ultimate is a through stud that achors on a solid side cover on the other side,
but in this case it is threaded into the same side, and will still add to the strength.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey again, I would like to start by saying I had a great time on the weekend at VW Warwick racing my other buggy and even drove it off the trailer after 11 runs!

I wont list them all but,
slowest (first run, 40psi in tyres so big wheel spin off the line)
r/t - .602
60 ft- 2.338
MPH- 63.11
ET- 10.595
I adjusted the tyre pressure on the next run and ran,
.586
2.10
62.94
10.307
The fastest run all weekend was 8.673@0.00MPH as dangerous would say it "BOGUS" but my actual fastest which didn't feel like a computer glitch was a
.578
2.092
63.91
10.155(Breakout)

All in all some very competitive racing on all levels i felt and can't wait too move up one with this new project! Congadulations too everyone involved in this event and a big shout out too Craig Hughes for doing what he does!

"Actual Update"
I have many parts on a wish list for Rodney to take over too the states(slipped it into is pocket at warwick)which includes cb performance front wide five alloy disc kit with dropped spindles braided lines and master cylinder, Empi rear wide five disc lit. Tyres steering wheel and more...

The car itself will be going back too custom in Three weeks time to have a 12 point cromoly racing cage fitted. That should keep me ammused for a little while but the Engine build is something i need to start too consider.

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's, well pulled my finger out today and got the painter around to help glass up this major crack in the side of the body. We started by sanding/grinding the body back paper thin around the area to allow more layers to be applied over the crack. Tie wire was used to hold the two sections of body in the right place. We then taped up one side and glassed to that. We will remove the body and flip it over to glass the other side when it comes back from Custom. I also cut the rear section out to give Dave plenty of room in there. There is more to be cut later so the body can be removed over the whole roll cage.

Here's some pics.

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

more pics!

1916baja ·

Sick! Whats shane doin drinkin while at work😂 lets hope the purists don't see that dirty great hole you cut out of the arse!

pete wood ·

cut cut. there's nothing pure about a manx. 🤘

1916baja ·

This is day two of the fibreglassing, and good thing you say that pete cos there was more cutting including the bumps for the head lights and wipers. The body came off the pan and was turned over. The rest of the day was spent glassing the hole for the fuel filler, the holes where all the bumps were and the other side of the crack in the side plus various smaller ones, also reparing the point of the left hand front guard. That is pretty much it for the fibreglass, so off to Custom on the 7th Dec for the cage!

Cheers Dave!

Here's some pics of the glassing on the under side.

Quick Update, not alot has happened as I have been waiting for my booking date at custom vee dub but the time has finnaly come and the car is in the shop as i speak having the cromoly roll cage, seat mounts shifting rod and harness mounts all being fitted. Also mounting the steering column and intermediate solid mount on the gearbox.

I have also been in touch with Rod and shall be flying down to sydney early in the new year to recieve my rather large basket of goodies from the recent U.S.A. trip!
There is also a complete Draw through turbo kit in there for me too, cant wait to see it all.

So from me merry xmas everyone!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, I just got some formula vee tyres off Craig Hughes for the front of my car. They are 5.5" wide and went on my 4"x15" rims. Thanks again Craig, I think they look pretty good!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Bugger! The tyres leaked air over night so i pumped them up and stuck them in the pool.

I found that the tyres were leaking through the side walls and also one rim was leaking through the weld.

I think I'll put some tubes in if i can find some that fit through the valve holes i already have. Other wise I will have to seal that rim and get new tyres🥲

Cheers Dave!

colonel mustard ·

Do you mean leaking through the bead, or the actual sidewall? Because if they are leaking through the sidewall, get new ones! any repair you do would be patching an issue, and would be quite unsafe. also, if there is a leak in the rim, get it welded!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey eveyone, Update time again!

The cage is moving along nicely, sorry no pics of that just yet, and I just got back from Sydney last night after flying down to see Rod and go to the Top Gear Live show(which was awesome.) I spent the whole day just about at Rod's on sunday, we went through and pretty well put all the parts required to finish the car, brakes spring plates axle's, steering wheel, fuel tank etc... on a crate to come home, bar the engine. Altough here's some pic's of the Turbo kit which was included in my spending frenzy!

"mmmmmm", alot more pic's to come once all this stuff lands!

Looks like a T04 exhaust flange and a 'B' series turbo. Do you have the specs on it.
Is the webber set up for alcohol?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Well to be perfectly honest I am a little in the dark on this one Aaron, All we know is it came off a sand rail car and yes we 'guessed' a to4. Rod hasn't pulled the carby down so unsure what's inside? either way i'll be stickin to pump fuel for now!

Craig Hughes said he would stow my goods away in his Drag Rat and smuggle them over the border for me in exchange for some storage fee's for the Drag Rat! 😂

Cheers Dave!

jjwebb123 ·

i hate that fiberglass ,its hard stuff to work with. But it looks like you have the refreshments sorted. 😂

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Well the parts which i purchased from Rod on my recent trip to Sydney have just been dropped at my door this morning. Check This out!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

More, four piston calipers on the back! + cb performance front brake kit

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

More, adjustable side plates and the turbo kit!

dangerous ·

mmmm.
stuff.

1916baja ·

dude! thats some big ass calipers! i'll see it all tomorrow... I i'll just take what i need for my car and you can keep the rest 😎

colonel mustard ·

thats some sweet goodies.

Craig Torrens ·

you may want to modify the spring plates with a locking bolt, or when you "back off" or brake really hard the rear will lift up.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

that looks sweet as Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, Well I have spoken with Dave and will be going in next Friday for a test fit of the seat position and the roll cage clearance of my head before final welds are applied. Should have some progress pics of that when i go.

Cheers Dave!

Stanley ·

Lookin good Dave. Thats some neat stuff you got delivered

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, while I have been waiting for the cage to be completed I have started ordering a lot of engine parts with Leon Motors and Rod Penrose.

Basically we are not building a 1916 with that turbo anymore. We are building a 2332 with a bigger turbo and flanged crank!🤪
Should be fun anyway, I'll keep you posted.

Cheers Dave!

SuperOwen ·

Any reason you didn't tie the cage to the frame horns?

vlad01 ·

weight I'm guessing?

1916baja ·

I'm pretty sure it is getting tied to the frame horns, Well it was last time i spoke to him about it....

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

SuperOwen wrote:Any reason you didn't tie the cage to the frame horns?
There are two bars that go from the cage to the horns that bolt in.

The cage is nearing completion and should be home in the next week or two!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's Here are some (old) pics of the cage all tacked up and ready for welding.
It's finished now and I'm actually picking it up today so more pics then.

SuperOwen ·

Very nice!!

Wow 2332 and a big turbo in a buggy, thats nuts!!!
Looking at 6s on the 1/8 now? I thought your grin was big after a few hot laps around raleigh race track.😂

Good stuff Dave, keep the posts comming man.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Home at last! Plus some pics of the body being mounted. The front wheels are just too far apart for the small Manx front guards, so I removed the front end today, pulled it down and will be having it shortened 30mm on each side.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Today I also welded two more cross braces across the floor as per direction of the tech inspector. It was going good until I had to start notching it around the seat braces but I'm happy with how it turned out!

Cheers Dave!

1916baja ·

oh dude.... that is the shizzle. wow.

oldskl60 ·

13BVW ·

Wow looks unreal!!!

Man now I have to pull my finger out and do some fixing on mine

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Well, had a couple of busy days on the car and got a fair bit done. We have finished the gear shift and am just awaiting the 1/2 inch stainless fuel line to come in so I can run it through the tunnel before i weld the piece with my shifter attached to it back in. Today I picked up my front end which has been narrowed as far as we could and it might just be enough.
We also cut down the steering rods this afternoon and re machined the ends to take the tie rod locking nut taper and tapped the holes about 30mm deeper(the amount we cut off each rod and each side of the front end). It was back on it's wheels before I left Dad's, ready to do the steering column in the morning.

camera was flat today sorry.

Cheers Dave!

Stanley ·

Top work Dave.
Always liked the look of a manx set up for drags. It'll be a rocket. Got some wheelie bars yet?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, I've Been very busy trying to get this car done and have slowly been making progress. We now have the body mounted apart from a few brackets here and there, plus we Finished mounting the gear box by making some custom brackets and welding them into the horns on the floor. Now all I have to do is make a couple of straps for over the top.

I also had D.B. fit the other side plate and thru bolts plus fit the axles up to the backing plates for me.

I have also ditched the disc brakes on the rear for some good old type three drums, they were much easier to have done if I have any chance of diving this thing at Warwick.

Here's some more pics and yes they are my new MH Slick's!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's, Got another huge shipment off Rod today, Crank, Bearings, Flywheel, Lifters, Heads, Tappet covers, Turbo, Wastegate, Header, Holley carb, Intake, Billet slide pedals with master cyl's and clutch slave cyl.

On the engine front, not looking good for Warwick as Leon is having three weeks off starting next week and I head off to Europe in two weeks for 4 weeks landing home like a day before Warwick! Anyway it will still probably make an appearance and might just shake it down with the old 1641 yet???

Well I'm super tired after a big week on the car we even got the bonnet attached so that it hinges forward so couldn't be bothered with heaps of photo's so here's just a teaser.

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Ok, I got some more pics for you. Here's the rest of those parts to start with!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

And the turbo kit!

I also have the rear brakes finished with the studs in the drums and the wheels on!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Now Here's how that bonnet works. In order for it to come forward, it needs to come up about 40mm. So we had to slot the hinge and then we added spring's to pull the hinge up, then the bonnet is held down in place by a bonnet catch out of a beetle custom mounted, and released by a shortened golf cable under the dash sweet! Here's the pics's

Cheers Dave!

1916baja ·

thats really smart dude, was your dad behind that one? it seems like a john idea!

👍.......nice project coming along well

looks mad!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, It's been a while I know but I did go to Europe for a month which put a slight hault to proceedings on the build. However I have picked up the Engine from Leon last week and slotted it in place to start mocking up the turbo, plumbing etc... As for the rest of the car, well I can sit in my car turn the front wheel's push all the pedals with my feet and change all the gears with my gene berg shifter and It feels good! I will have some pics In a couple of day's.

Cheers Dave!

1916baja ·

Coupla days!?!!
That's too long!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here's a few close up's of the new shiny donk.
Enjoy, cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's, It's been too long I know. We have made some big changes and have decided to go EFI. I have purchased another T04 Turbo and dropped the car into Leon's to have it fitted. We're going to mount it somewhere over the Gear box because we have a lot more flexibility with it's location now and this will help with weight distribution. 2000cc Injectors have been purchased and the Microtech system is also on it's way. I will keep you posted.

Cheers Dave!

Sorry bout the light in these ones but here's some pics of the brackets I made to go around the horns of the floor pan and the bracing back to the torsion tube. We will take the body off again now and flip the frame over to weld it all with the tig!

venFun10 ·

venFun10 ·

Cool guys, what do you think it will run?
how much HP?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

well it should have 300Hp+ and should run sub 10 sec on the quarter quite easily.

venFun10 ·

nice mate, sounds like a scary ride. what mph will it go?
what are the other 10 sec cars you have had?
how light is this thing?
I cant wait to see it run mate

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

If the car runs 10's then MPH will be something over 120mph depending on launch. My guess is if you make the HP you want to then 135+ mph isnt out of the question at all.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:If the car runs 10's then MPH will be something over 120mph depending on launch. My guess is if you make the HP you want to then 135+ mph isnt out of the question at all.
Yeah I can go up to 140 MPH with the 4 wheel brakes I have, however We are incorporating a parachute into the design right now. Oh and this will be the first 10 sec I have owned.

Well probably not this year, I may be bringing it out for a bit of a shake down before I paint it but we'll see. I would like it to run into the 6's straight away at Warwick but that's if everything is right and nothing falls off😂

venFun10 ·

The fabled Pigman!!!!! Half Pig, Half Man. I thought everyone had heard this story!!!!
Works only at night while eating food scraps.
It is said all the cars he has built are lost in the mudpit in his shed/pen😂😂😂

matberry ·

Yeah, some say even more pig than man, but who really knows........

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Man you guy's are tripping😂, Pigman is a mate of mine who does a bit of fab work from home but is really just starting out so will basically be showcasing a lot of his skills on my car.

Had a good day today, mounted my staging brake and pulled it apart to be welded up at Pigman's tomorrow. Dad and I also made a windscreen frame to sit inside my front hoop which will also be welded in. We even made a template out of plywood which I will go and have cut out of Lexan on Monday. All systems go!!!

What a great weekend Mick and I had! We really got a shit load done. Mick's car runs awesome straight up! That's one going to Warwick now we have the mammoth task of completely building a whole race car in 3 weeks🤪 .

Here's some pics of the new fuel cell, and the motor is back from Troy's and looking pretty damn sweet! Also Mick cut my floor panels while I cut ALL 10 stainless hard brake lines to go from the master cylinder to the staging brake and rear brakes then forward from the staging brake to the front brakes. I have had braided lines made for the flex with stainless fittings bling!

I Also have the whole clutch Hard line and hose done and Dad mounted the slave cylinder for me but don't have pics of that will put them up later.

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, I know I still have to push hard to get to Sydney and trust me I will however I am getting married in less than 4 weeks so the wedding is taking a front seat until then oh then there is the 8 nights on a 32ft self charted yacht in the Whitsundays for the honeymoon!

I will work on the car between now and then. I also have the turbo mounted, the whole exhaust done and the intercooler attached between the turbo and throttle body. Just working on the Injectors right now, will put some pics up soon!

bugboymatt ·

Congrats on the impending wedding mate. Hope it goes to plan. The eight nights on the Whitsundays sounds great.

I can see why the buggy would take a back seat.

Here's the pics.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

more, and one with the body back on.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Today I worked on the dash that Mick started for me and had heaps of fun with this. I cut out the hole for the switches, drilled the holes then Dad got a bit old skool on it and braised some tiny 4mm nuts on the back for me to bolt to. Then I trimmed and sanded it to fit, made some tabs off the cage to bolt to and mounted all the gauges on top in cups. I think It turned out pretty awesome actually!

Hey, I have bought a few more goodies inc, electric water pump which pumps 80L min for the intercooler, a Micro-tech handset, and a 45 amp alternator. I also bought the two huge fuel pumps a while back. So have a big week planned over the break, we are going to lock ourselves in the shed with an esky and get all this crap on the car!

Merry Christmas Everyone and I'll update in the new year!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hi again, Here's a heap of pics of all the work we have been doing this week.

we'll start with the Inter cooler system. We have mounted the tank so the top of the barrel cooler is about 50mm higher than the bottom of the tank. The water pump is fitted below it.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

couple more.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here is the Alternator. It fit perfectly into this little hole, with room to adjust the belt.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here Is today's efforts. We managed to get the Fuel cell in place. We decided to put it in the back because the firewall at the front was a real headache and putting it there eliminated alot of work.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

And finally, Dad went out and picked up this throttle cable today. It's 316 stainless and we made the brackets to hold it in place. I now have a working throttle. Awesome!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Oh and I bought this for my wife yesterday!

It's a Subaru Liberty GT B Spec, with a few upgrades to the tune of about 170kw at the wheels.

1916baja ·

you couldn't help yourself could you!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

No I couldn't, Nice Avatar too.

typethreeking ·

with that alternator mount where are you running your breathers on the engine??? Might need some weights put up the front with everything mounted in the back, will make it interesting to drive anyway...😂😂

OZ Towdster ·

Dave i'dd be a little concerned over the alternator bracket in that it is only supported on one side of the alternator pivot bolt which under big acceleration ( which is what drag racing is all about ) then the alt will want to flex and continually through the belt off .
Yes i'mm guessing your going to gusset the shaped 10mm plate back to the 3mm plate that bolts to the case BUT it will still flex through the single sided mount to the alternator

Nice Subie , so you got rid of the Skyline ?????

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

typethreeking wrote:with that alternator mount where are you running your breathers on the engine??? Might need some weights put up the front with everything mounted in the back, will make it interesting to drive anyway...😂😂
good point on the breather, I can probably incorperatte something into the bracket. I know there is heaps of stuff in the back now but it's just how things panned out.

The Alternator bracket isn't finished yet but it is quite strong without supporting both sides. I might have a bit more of a play with it.

No, still got the skyline for now, going to fix it up a bit then sell it.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

We have been busy on the tins. here is the coils mounted, the front dash panel and the rear firewall.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

more, oh and our first attempt at the side panels which we have re-done.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here is how the sides actually turned out.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

More, Haven't finished the lid but this is what it will look like.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here it is with everything attached so far bolted on and off to have a chat with the new tech guy!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

And this is what I have bought in the last couple of days and believe me this hurt!!🤪

The complete Breather system, polished tank, all -12 speed flow fittings and braid.

And the fuel system, all speed flow, -10 pre pumps -8 after running two 044 pumps (one into each rail) through two 100 micron s/s filters.

bugboymatt ·

Coming together nicely mate. 😀

typethreeking ·

dave, im running two pumps as well but with run them to one rail first then across to the second and then to the fuel reg. Thats how i had it setup in the street car. Then you can run your return from the reg back to the tank.

typethreeking wrote:dave, im running two pumps as well but with run them to one rail first then across to the second and then to the fuel reg. Thats how i had it setup in the street car. Then you can run your return from the reg back to the tank.
My reg (which is in post) has two in and one out. So i'm going to run one pump to each rail then each rail back to the reg and then one out to the tank. Call me paranoid but as you all well know the last thing I want to do is starve this thing for fuel.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, as Mick said work has hit quite hard right when I didn't want it to! Luckily the frame is off having it's final welds done, I should have some time when it returns to paint it then assemble the whole car, wire it then off to Aaron's to get it running then on to the dyno!! Woohoo! So here are some pic's of the progress over the past few weeks.

This is the fuel system described earlier all mounted.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Dash panel Dzus'd in.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here is the alternator bracket being finished. We added a -12 breather pipe underneath the alternator then made a support behind for strength plus now it's supported on both sides of the top mount.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

All done! I even have a belt on it now but not in this pic.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

This is Dad's fancy custom oil filler tube/turbo drain. It started off just a filler tube with the temp sender in the bottom of it then we decided to run the turbo drain into the side of it with a -12 fitting. It enters just above the oil level but dumped straight onto the temp sender so we moved it down into the sump and we have also added a -8 breather to the top of the tube to prevent any air lock while the turbo is draining.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here is the Rotary crank angle sensor/vw distributor. First we cut the bottom of the cas off and trimmed it down a bit also, then we cut the bottom of a vw distributor off and machined out the cas to take the piece of vw distributor. We then worked out the shaft was 60mm too long but we couldn't just cut the end off because only about 30mm of the end of the shaft is a bigger size for the bush in the bottom of the casing. Long story short we had to cut 60mm out of the middle then drill out one side while machining the other down to fit inside. We then braised it back together. All we had to do then was drill a hole in the shaft and fit the vw drive. I think it come out tops!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

The shaft.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

All together

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

We thought we would use the old fuel pump hole as another -12 breather so Dad knocked this up which should do the trick!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here is the Micro tech mounted, the oil filter bracket I made and the front tow hook down on the front end as with an open top vehicle I can't have one up on the cage.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here is the air intake for the turbo, 3 inch alloy. Also have the custom made plug leads on.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

And finally, these are the 11/16 Romac wheel studs Butler fitted to my type 3 drums Sick! and my 1000 hp fuel pressure reg.

There that should do you lot for a while, Lets all keep everything crossed I make it to Sydney!!!!

OMG, it runs! Cam all run in now, got a small oil leak to deal with in the morning then off to the Dyno for a tune before Sydney. What a massive effort it has taken to get this far. A big thanks to Mick, Matt, Dad, Aaron, Mr Butler, Troy and everyone else who had a part in the final stretch of this build I couldn't have done it without you guys!!!

Cheers Dave!

Onya Dave, if anyone had seen Dave in the last few weeks walking around looking like the walking dead, you soon realise what a mammoth effort he put in himself.... While the rest of us more or less worked in shifts, mine was all day and night on my 3 day weekends, matts was during the week but Dave did all of them... Awesome work bro. Give yourself some mega credit.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

You going to be ready for Sydney after setback on dyno? Don't give up dude stick with it!! Troy had 4 sessions on the dyno before the type 3 was ready to go. First was clutch let go, then gearbox milled teeth off 3rd, injectors sprung a leak then finally got it going!! Even then we couldn't put the boost we wanted into it as the injectors were almost at 100% duty cycle and wastegate spring would only give max 18psi.

The joys of building a quick aid cooled vw!!!

1916baja ·

Mr butler is repairing the head now. Also lowering the compression to 9.8. Was 10.8 was supposed to be 10.1.will be down to the wire.

Nice one mate!! Did you weigh the car while you were there? Good to hear the car made it down the strip more than once without a drama!!

pigman ·

good to see it come together and be apart of it congrats mate

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

As Mr Butler said, WOW! I cant believe how well the buggy went after the crazy week we had leading up to the vw showdown. Then to repair the car overnight somehow squeeze in a dyno session on the way to Sydney including 10+ power runs all making 160+hp, load up and continue to Sydney only expecting them to let me run maybe once down the track considering the tech concerns, THEN to go and do 5 Qualifying runs first run half track run solo to see cars potential so slipped the clutch off the line then sunk the boot in and dropped it in first then second and backed off running a 17 something then next run decided to just go for it and ran straight in to the 12's at 108mph and it was magnificent, what a feeling! I then went on to the round robin and progressed to the finals against Gunter, the lights came down and i cut a .1 light then drifted my way down to victory in the vw special class running my quickest time all day 12.008@105.94Mph!!!!!

. Thanks again to firstly my wife for being so supportive and understanding when I was doing those 20 odd hour days to get the car ready, my awesome crew Mick, Lisa, James and Matt for sticking it out and keeping me on track literally, My parents for just being there, Aaron Roberts for his massive part in prepping this car, Troy for dropping everything and welding up my head the night I torched it and of coarse where would we be without the "Muffin man" Dangerous Dave Butler.

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's, Just passed tech inspection now just to get my UDL and plumb up the intercooler so I can wind up the boost and run some good numbers!

Going to enter Qld Jamboree this year too if all goes well, and then vw Warwick should be a cracker this year.

Cheers Dave!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Congrats dude good job!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, just thought I would update what I'm up to at the moment. I have pulled out the microtech and sent it off to sort out the injector pulses ( I only have two and have batch fired the other two ) and to unlock the data logging of all of its inputs.
When it returns I will have the injectors re-wired to suit the sequential firing. I will plumb up the water for the inter cooler in the mean time then back to Matty at pits (Dyno). I'm also fitting a boost control so I can just wind it up on the Dyno and start making some good numbers. I will let you all know how I go!!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, well i'm actually starting to get ready for jambo and warwick. Been down to my fav shop and got all the fittings required to plumb up the intercooler system with -12 everything.
Now just have to get the tank all welded up and make the hoses, then set the car up for the dyno next wednesday. If all goes well I should have some improved figures to share.

Here's some pics of the fittings, the tank mounted and the custom spray bar we made which will weld into the tank.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Some pics of the pump fittings we are making out of s/s instead of those huge plastic ones. And the intercooler with the speed flow fittings.

whathaveidone ·

waiting waiting waiting!!!!!!!

Stanley ·

Frosty is coming along to help out. Without car

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guys, sorry to keep you waiting. Well didn't have the best day on the Dyno, that mysterious cracking sound from sydney appeared instantly. We tried to find the sorce of the noise but had no luck. Our best power run was only nudging 180hp but sounded terrible doing so. I'm hoping it is one of the injectors causing a lean miss in one of the cylinders but a comp test in the morning will show if I've done any major damage today. I will keep ya's posted.

Sides ·

Err, bugger... hope all checks out OK dude !!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Well It did not check out well. Comp was down on all cyls so pulled the heads again. Basically there is too little sealing surface between the heads and the barrels for even an aspirated engine let alone a boosted one so some new heads are in order to get me going again. I will load some pics tonight to show you what I mean.

Cheers Dave!

whathaveidone ·

That sucks, But could have been alot worse!!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

You can see here the holes for the head studs on these heads are too big and pertrude into the sealing surface way too much.

Sides ·

Dah, bugger - feel for ya dude, but Ben's prolly right and could've been worse.

What heads you goin for this time round ???

typethreeking ·

Have you got copper sealing rings, most 94mm bores are like this, speak to dangerous.

2442supercharged ·

I use copper gaskets on and they are fine ,

whathaveidone ·

maybe a cheaper fix than you thought!!

1916baja ·

It had copper gaskets already. I don't think that's the only problem with them but ill let Dave fill that in....

Stanley ·

Welding and machining? Gotta be cheaper. That's a bummer Dave. At least there's time fix it before jambo or Warwick....depending on coin that is.

humpty ·

That sort of hole is normal with 94's.... Check your seating surfaces.... If they are not flat, you will have sealling issues for certain.... What thickness copper gaskests you running?.... Brand?.... I have heard that some worked better once they have been anealed... Have also read that some gaskets are actually too large in the ID, which makes contact with the piston!!!!

dangerous ·

DavoBuggy 1641 wrote:You can see here the holes for the head studs on these heads are too big and pertrude into the sealing surface way too much.
It is hard to tell from these pictures,
but some one has drilled the heads much too large at the stud hole,(compared with how they were when they were made)
so in Dave's case, the sealing surface HAS been reduced more than normal.

This may work for a while with the help of the copper gaskets that were fitted before Sydney,
but even with the added thickness,
the compression ratio is probably still to high for what dave plans.
Simplest option would be a set of the new CB heads the same model.
They come with big chambers too.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Ok, Got my Heads fixed up by DB and had to put new valve springs in so I bought the next siize up Pac racing springs to the ones I had, part no 1520. they come up pretty good and should seal well enough with head gaskets. I'm also increasing my deck height to around 4mm to drop my compression to 8.5 : 1. This should help with keeping the combustion chamber temps at a more managable range as the outragous deck heights I have now are more than likely most if not all of the trouble i've been having up to now.

Shims and pushrods should be up tomorrow from Rodney along with heads and shims for Micks drag car so next week I have two motors to build. Should make for typical run into Warwick/Sydney for us though!😂

Cheers Dave!

20bkombi ·

Good to see it back on track dude!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey, well I've got my heads back from DB, got my shims and my gaskets from Rod. Set the deck ht today on two cylinders (one on each side) ended up with a 0.177' shim and a 0.040' shim to give me 2.35mm of deck ht, plus 1.5mm head gasket which is a total of 3.85mm between the piston and the head. The other side used the same shims plus another 0.020' shim to achieve the same height as the other side. Given the cc's of the heads this equates to around 8.5 : 1 comp which should hopefully make a big difference in the reliability of this motor.

Cheers Dave!

Sides ·

Schwing... can't wait to see in action at Warwick dude !!!

👍

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Got a fair bit done tonight, set the rest of my deck ht's then fitted my heads to see if my push rods would still fit. I had two spacers under them before and was able to just remove one of them and back off the adjustment a little and they fit so no need to make new ones. I will strip it down again tomorrow now I know everything fits and assemble it properly. Mick came round and we pulled his motor down ready to test fit all his shims and stuff.

Heres some pics of our "Race Shop" in full swing lol plus my motor dummied up!

Cheers Dave!

Looks like mick has his porting skills down pat with one hand in his pocket 😂😂

1916baja ·

This is what dave looks like these days.... he pretty much never moves from this position 😂

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, well had a very productive day, actually just finished, I was finally happy enough with all the measurements to put some sealant on my barrels and tension my heads down. Set the tappets, all I got to do tomorrow is bolt everything back on to the motor and fire it up!

Also got Micks heads on and tensioned up before we left. We hope to have his motor in and running tomorrow night.

Cheers Dave!

Stanley ·

Well done guys

humpty ·

Great work fellas...... Really looking forward to seeing the buggy run at Warwick this weekend.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guys, sorry bout the late update but I got my car running on Friday and sounded really good. Smooth idle, much better than before. Temps seem more controlled, I think the lower comp means less heat so the methanol has half a chance of doing its job of cooling. Few odd jobs to take care of then she's good to go.

Also got Mick's motor started yesterday, it too sounds really good, we've tested it a few times up dads driveway and soon ran out of tune on the 150 main jets so swapped them out for some 155's and bingo this thing came to life. Let's just say I'm quietly confident with this one this year in this battle of the 1016's

I even found some time today and decided while I was storing Ben Robinson's Vwma drag bug this week I would go down and grab a new Holley red fuel pump and replace the blown carter pump for him so he's ready for Warwick too.

Cheers Dave!

20bkombi ·

Glad to hear micks engine is going.
Good work Dave, that fuel pump of ben's didn't sound good on Saturday.

What an awesome result for all the hard work we have put into this car. Top vw shootout win, which gave me enough points for the overall series win and even some prize money to top it all off. Not bad for our second test session ay?

I would like to thank firstly my crew Matty and Dad, you guy's were awesome and couldn't have done it without you two. Thanks to my wife Nicole for her support, my main man Mick for his support also and congrats to him for achieving his goal of cracking an 8 and to all my friends who took the time to come up to the track and support me too. Big thanks to Allpave Asphalt (my parents buisness) for the sponsorship!

The car ran so well all weekend with only minor adjustents being made to the susspension, wheelie bar and clutch settings to suit the changing track conditions all day.

Here's a vid of one of my burnout's.

good luck Dave , hope everything goes well 👍👍

Stanley ·

Hope the weather holds off for you Dave. I'd come out and support but have shit to do....keep us posted.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Well the weather held off but had a number of issues we had to sort thoughout the whole night, the main one being a blocked boost controller which caused the engine to make 26psi of boost!!!! Being tuned for 9psi you would understand this is not a good thing. The car felt and sounded awesome off the line but soon leaned out in second gear causing detonation so I immediately backed off and drove through. Once we sorted that I came out and the car felt like it was back to it's old power again in the skid and launch (felt heaps slower) but then slipped the cluch pretty bad so another back off and drive through. Last run we backed off the clutch and the car went alot better but still only managed a 12.05 @ 108 mph, reason being I had forgot to remove the +12% of fuel in the computer which I had entered chasing the lean problem earlier in the night so It was a bit fat. Oh well, got it 90% sorted tonight at the track just need to attempt the licence runs at Sydney now.

See ya's all there lets hope for some good weather!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

WooHoo, My licence and log book arrived in the mail while I was on the road to Sydney. Going to change the clutch if I have enough time before whatever date is decided for the showdown, and going to put it back on the dyno for a bit more boost then off to willow again to get that 10 sec pass........

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Just a quick update, I have replaced the clutch in my car. I have changed from a stage 4 Kennedy pressure plate with standard disc to a stage 2 Kennedy pressure plate with a 4 puc disc. Did some practice launches up the driveway and it felt good so booked onto the Dyno moday to wind some boost into it! I'll keep ya's posted.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

I am at work!

1916baja ·

Exactly!

humpty ·

😂

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's, went to the dyno today and had a fairly productive day. Too start with I diddn't blow it up for once but did have an issue with the new cluch setup. It was going fine until about 4000 rpm then it couldn't handle any more tourqe than that and would slip then grab and so on right through to 6850 (rev limiter). I backed the clutch right off and it was slightly better until I wound the boost up then we soon found the limits again and ended up making 217.4 Hp @ 5500 rpm and it made 17.4 psi of boost with an early shut down to save the clutch. The tune should be good for a bit over 20 psi which is where we assume it will end up with sufficient load but after that the map just goes super rich in case. Going to pull the clutch out again and check the pressure plate isn't pulling up too far and shim it out if it is but if it checks out fine I will go up to a stage 3 pressure plate. Next TnT I'll be aiming for will be April 6 Sat night If any one is interested.

Here's some photos of the car hooked up to it's life support and my dyno sheet. You can see the squiggily curve after 4000 rpm. This is the clutch slip.

Cheers Dave!

Sides ·

Sounds like some nice progress dude, even with the clutch not wanting to play the game !!!

Hopefully should be able to come out for a look see when you run...

humpty ·

Well done Dave.... That's really getting there.... I just fitted a Stage III clutch to the POS, with a KEP Gold disc, and I can tell you it worked really nicely for me.... Light pedal with the long clutch lever arm, and plenty of feel.

Good stuff Dave,

1916baja ·

Dude, did you see your oil pressure light come on in that last run while you were staging?? Wtf?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

It was getting a bit hot cos that was a back to back run and didn't want to idle very well so the revs where dropping enough to bring on the op light.

Sides ·

The first run was embarassing as I was still feeling out the new puc clutch and as I launched there was enough force to flick my 'missile' style ignition switch to the off position so you could imagine the car doesn't go real good when it's turned off lol. I restarted the car and took off from the 60 foot mark and ran a 17 something but at 120 mph which told us if I can get down the track and start the car just the once then i'm on the right track. The car was making a pinging/detonating sound the whole way down the track on the first run so after a quick chat with Aaron on the phone we supposedly put 5% more fuel in the mix trim. The second run it went 10.65 @ 125 mph but sounded even worse doing it. Another quick chat with Aaron soon pointed out I had mistakingly added 5% to the timing trim instead of mixture. With that sorted I went back out and ran 10.55 @ 126mph and the car sounded a little better but not quite right so going back to the dyno now with the new clutch that works and going to fix the tune!

Thanks to my homies Mick and Matty for their crewing duties tonight and also thanks to Dave Sidery for coming out to show his support and for attatching all his go pro's.

Big thanks to My Mum, dad and their buisness Allpave Asphalt Services for sponsoring me and thanks to all that have helped out with the car over the last couple years, Dave Butler, Aaron Roberts, Rod Penrose, any one I missed you know who you are I couldn't have done it without your help and support.

Cheers Dave!

Nice work now I really have to pull my finger out

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here is a vid of the 10.55 just the in car shot. you can hear the pinging on this one.

Cheers Dave!

I think that may be the head leaking dave,
bit hard to tell if that is the only noise, but from the stands, that is what it sounds like.
Could also be the wate gate.

Have a look around the barrel head joint for moisture.

1916baja ·

When I was under there taking the wheelie bars off, it was a little moist... It looked like oil coming from the tapper cover gasket though. I didn't think to Smell it. Good point Dave, more boost will do that.

Doug Sweetman ·

How long is the run off on that track ? Sounds stout.... I'm with Dave, I reckon leaking head.

11CAB ·

Good work Dave

matberry ·

Head leaking or not, awesome job Dave, well done. Sounds more like head to me on the vid

1916baja ·

Certainly didn't drive like a car with a leaking head! 😂

Just means there's more in it!!

Great video dave.
What is next?
Bit of paint perhaps?
Manx silver would look good.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, just a quick update. I've ordered a brand new set of cnc ported cb performance street eliminator's today which will be going straight to DB for cc's ect...
I have also ordered a set of raceware studs to help try and keep these bad boys in place.

It should all be here in the next couple of weeks then off to the Dyno and a track session before Sydney. I'll keep ya's posted.

Cheers Dave!

20bkombi ·

That's exciting, bet you can't wait!!
What size valves?

whathaveidone ·

You love cutting it fine!!!!!!! good luck with it.see ya in 8 weeks

humpty ·

Damn that's gonna be a beast.... If that's possible.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

You going to lower the comp a little with the new heads mate?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

What size valves?
44 x 37, with plans of a 40 mm exhaust valve maybe after Sydney.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE wrote:You going to lower the comp a little with the new heads mate?
Comp will prob stay at 8.5 : 1.

matberry ·

That'll liven things up

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Thanks for posting those pics Dave!
I will be picking these bad boys up on Monday and fitting them next week. Going to have to port the manifolds a bit but should go on relitively easily apart from that. I will be fitting the 10mm Raceware studs in the meantime.

Booked on the dyno 14th june then going to go to a t&t 22nd june if all goes well..... Then next stop Sydney Mo Fo's!!!

modnrod ·

Hey Dave, are the beehives and retainers from Comp? #26125?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

modnrod wrote:Hey Dave, are the beehives and retainers from Comp? #26125?
The springs are PAC and DB made the retainers and I have berg collets.

1916baja ·

What are those valves in there? They're not the ones they came with...

dangerous ·

1916baja wrote:What are those valves in there? They're not the ones they came with...
Needed longer valves to fit the springs in.

1916baja ·

Oh ok.

humpty ·

What's going on with exh side?

Stanley ·

Looks good Richo...you're in good hands

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

humpty wrote:What's going on with exh side?
The exhaust is also cnc ported with plans to go up to a 40mm ex valve

Guides sliced?

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Picking up my motor from DB today hopefully. My work is really busy until we leave for Sydney so I had him fit my heads, set up my rockers and make some new berg pushrods for me this week.

Looking good for Dyno Friday then willow Saturday then Sydney a week after.

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Tharrr she blows.... friggen sweet, top quality job by Dave Butler on this one. This is the greatest chance we've had at getting these heads to seal. New Raceware studs are now fitted and of coarse my new heads. Just got to fit the manifolds and slide it on in then off to Matty (dyno) 8.30 Friday morning... Wish me luck!

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here's the new canvas enclosure we have made for the trailer and I have "re-ported" the manifolds.

whathaveidone ·

Man those ports are HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Dyno Update, Had another interesting dyno session today, made good power topping at 250Hp @ 20 psi and around 5500 rpm. He backed off early because I asked him not to exceed 20 psi as I was not 100% happy with the fit of the intake manifolds which ended up biting me in the arse. What happened was when the plenums were bolted to the new heads they were 5/10mm further apart so when I attached the "basically solid" Y peice in between them it pulled the plenums towards each other and even had trouble sealing when it was dead cold let alone all warmed and stretched up on 20 pound. 4th run in the lh hand gasket blew out at 20 psi and sprayed methanol out which then caught fire. Matty saw this on his live camera behind my car and quickly shut it down and the flames soon burnt themselves out. Could have been a major drama on the track so thats why dyno sessions can be invaluble when sorting a car like this. Oh and to top it all off as I was undoing the nuts on the manifold I managed to put the spanner through the side of it so now I've got to take it to Aaron's tonight and have it welded😬 We are modifying the intake system to take two flexible joints and will hit the dyno Wed next week and if all goes well willowbank wed night before the big trip south...

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Here's a vid of the fire....

typethreeking ·

Glad I wasn't the only one having all theses dramas, except I didn't have a fire.. Very lucky!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Dad whipped up a luggage rack yesterday to fit over the bonnet of the buggy to store the pit gazebo's and whatever....Might even put Matt on it while we drive to Sydney so we don't have to listen to him 😂

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Got a bit done today on the car as well, picked up my plenums from Aaron last night. He did a great job building up the thin sections inside and out. So today I hand filed the surface where the nut seats to match the mating surface to the head and to allow just enough room for an 8mm nut with a 12mm hex to go on. I tried to leave as much thickness as i could for some strength. I Also test fit the now seperated intake pipe with the silocone 'bump' hose. It all fits really well and should work a treat.

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

more

typethreeking ·

You need some small 11mm nuts for the manifolds, makes life easier..

RodPenrose ·

Dave , I sourced some new 10 mm flanged nuts in the US that will suit your needs . I will take some to Syd. next week if you can remind me to give you some , ROD.

20bkombi ·

Glad I was able to help, was fun welding the cast manifolds reeking of sweet methanol... Haha

9's here we come😁 !!!!

matberry ·

Yep, I've got the 11mm spanner or 10mm aero style flanged nuts here if you need any Dave

Stanley ·

Well done Dave...looks good mate. Look forward to catching up in Sydney.

Sides ·

Bummer bout the blowout - great that caught it quickly like that, and even better that looks like have it sorted so already.

T&T Wed night tho instead of State of Origin... gotta be the definition of dedication right there !!!

😂

andrewmurphy ·

Should be less people there = more runs

1916baja ·

Shame his tow car driver is going to the origin and I'm on baby sitting duties! 😂 he won't have anyone to boss around!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Got the car going today after pressure testing the intake system and just had a couple of squirts up the driveway and she was turning the Tyres very easily...
Dyno session tomorrow at 12.00 is a go. Going to turn down the boost a little as its making 20psi at only 5000rpm, prob lock it off at 18psi then willowbank tomorrow night if that goes well!!

Cheers Dave

whathaveidone ·

Good luck man!!

20bkombi ·

Good work dude!!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

F*#k it! Torched a head today on the Dyno, at Aaron's right now having it welded and Butler is waiting patiently to machine it tonight then going to throw it all together and see if it runs. If it does I will make the trip to Sydney but that's a big IF!

andrewmurphy ·

Damn. Sorry dude

"MR" Butler to you.
or DB.

1916baja ·

Oh don't be sorry Andrew! This is how we do things... It's all about the thrill of getting the car ready!😂😂😂

hellbugged ·

Bummer

I'd be sticking to "Sir Mr kind ole mate buddy pal DB Butler" at this stage

Good luck for the turn around

Stanley ·

Fingers crossed for you Davo. I'm sure Mr Butler will see you right

essex ·

Good luck guys,

20bkombi ·

Finished welding up the head and now it's at DB's to be machined.

Also cleaned and flowed Daves ID 2000's injectors. # 1 inj is 15ml down on a 30sec cycle at 3 milliseconds @ 5000 rpm. Which is a lot!!
#2 inj was ok, that's the cylinder that got to hot???

1916baja ·

Good work Aaron! Dave said you did a kick ass job welding the head!

20bkombi ·

Any time!!
feels good to work late nights before a big meet, even though I'm not racing.

dangerous ·

Yeah #1 was the torched one.
Weld was supoib dude,
Dave is on his way home.

20bkombi ·

Sweet, all makes sense.
Dave if you can get another injector I can flow them all again.

whathaveidone ·

Keep going guys, theres plenty of time. stay safe on the drive down.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

So injectors were gummed up/dirty? That was the cause of the BBQ?

20bkombi ·

Yep

1916baja ·

Cars running and were on our way to Sydney! Huge thanks to Dave and Aaron, without them we would not be going anywhere!

Sides ·

Upside down Miss Jane !!! (figure you haven't rolled as you're all still smiling)

Nice one on getting it all sorted Dave - great to see DB and Aaron turning their magic for ya like that.

👍

Have fun down there guys !!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

What power did you end up making mate?

1916baja ·

Heaps!😂😂 he never got a decent run, I remember him telling me it was making about 250 @ 5500 rpm before the intake blew out the other day. I think it only got to 220 or so before the head blew. Haven't been back to the dyno, just throwing heaps of fuel at it for Sydney just to be safe...

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey guy's, I have ordered a innovate motorsports LM 2 full kit inc oxy sensor digital hand control plus heaps of cables and shit. Also got a TC-4 thermocouple and 4 egt probes coming.

I had two injectors which didn't clean up as good as the others so also bought 4 new ID2000's so I can flow 4 exactly the same and a couple of spares which I can change quickly if I have to.

Just got to fit all the crap when it gets here and have it wired up then back to the dreaded Dyno, keeping a lot closer eye on things now...

Cheers Dave!

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Hey Guy's, Mick and I spent some time on our Dash's today and mounted a bunch of Innovate stuff in both of our cars.

Here's some pics of my pile of Innovate goodness...

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

This is the bracket I fabbed up to hold the LM-2 hand control. Strategically placed so I can press the record button with my arm restraints on.

DavoBuggy 1641 ·

Few more of the bracket finished, painted and installed.

Cheers Dave!
