cheech ·

Hi all how can i tell the exact build date of my bug? the compliance plate is in German i dont know if there all like that? ive been told its a 1972 but am waiting to have the old rego papers forwarded to me to be sure 1 will post pics up in members rides as soon as i can

Bizarre ·

you need to look under the rear seat
There will be an inspection hole for the gear box coupling
In front of that on the hump WILL be a number

This is the ONLY number that matters

It will be 112 2 XXX XXX

11 - This indicates it is a Type 1 standard beetle or 1302 beetle. 1303 beetles weree 13
2 - indicates it was made in the 2nd year f the decade
2 - indicates it was made in the 70's
XXX XXX are the production numbers

cheech ·

thanks very much i will check it out when i get home 😁

cheech ·

i found the number its 111310xxxx???? does that mean its not a 70s as there are no 2s ??

Bizarre ·

Strange

here are some links to look at
http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/specgeninfo/chassisnumbers.htm
http://www.lightner.net/ybdb/serno.html
http://www.bugsandbuggies.com/Chas_Num.asp
http://www.superbeetles.com/welcome.htm

But that doesnt make sense
111 2XXX XXX would mean 1971

Hmmm - hang on
Just found a new site

This like lists a "July 1971 111 320 0000 DO 836 000 34 hp (you didn't even know they still made them) AB 0 350 000 40 hp"
as a 1971
http://www.lennysvw.com/type1chassis.htm

But that goes against what i have listed here
http://www.ltv-vwc.org.uk/wheelspin//ws_jun_2000/chassis_Numbers.htm

which lists waht the numbers mean

Any one else want to comment??

cheech ·

yeah it does seem strange it has a 1600cc engine front disc brakes and is definatly a super bug i found this sight http://www.superbeetles.com/chassis.htm but im still confused 🤪

Bizarre ·

come and ask at http://www.superbeetlesonly.com/forum/index.php?act=idx as well

Joel ·

congratulations you have a 1971 superbug 👍

its not real far from the chassis number of my 2/71 superbug so it would be early 71 like april/june

68AutoBug ·

1200 beetles were made right up until the last beetle made in Germany... EMDEN factory

1200 beetles were the largest selling beetle in Germany....

they were also big sellers in the UK....

Bizarre ·

But why is the 4th number a 3?? and not a 2??

cheech ·
