Mission Accomplished - Even though I almost walked away from the bloody thing yesterday.
1. Eastern Creek Private Practice Day Jan
2. ARDC Eastern Creek Twilight Drive Feb
3. Drove Syd to Portland and back for VWMA drags
4. VW Nationals Wakefield Park Mayish running in engine
5. Eastern Creek Supersprint only 4 stinking laps due to oil breather issues
6. Oz Mazda Track Day at Wakefield Park new PB 1:14.6
7. Oran Park Standing Start Supersprint Sept with another PB 1:27.?
8. Drove to Warwick with another "Warwick PB" 9.3? (Not 9.5 quoted in VW MA)
9. Last weekend went to Circuit Club Christmas Party at Wakefield Park and gave Dad a drive for 2 sessions. I did a demo session, a solo session and a session with Yokohama driver Steve Glenney instructing.
Not bad for the old girl.
14 KM from home it was running on 2 cylinders. I pulled an idle jet and only the holder came out. I only had a screw driver. I was lying in the dirt unable to get the jet out and unable to get the holder back in. I had to drive it home on 2 cylinders below 5000 rpm and 4 above 5000 rpm. Torture! When I got home beer never tasted so good. Over and out for 2009.
Merry Xmas all
In 2008 I was more of a drag racer than a circuit racer. I did 2 drag events, Warwick and Portland, and one circuit event being the BugIn at Oran Park. Disgraceful!
My Oval spent more time fitted with roof racks than race rubber. Disgraceful!
I have also admitted myself, along with Jak Rizzo, to the shock absorber hall of shame. My front konis were half oil and half air. When I fitted the new Bilsteins the front sat over an inch higher. Even after a run around the block. And boy didn't the car feel different. Jak, at least my shocks still had some oil in them! Disgraceful!
I was a member of the Australian Racing Drivers Club last year, which gets you into one major event as a spectator and you can do Friday Private Practice days for just $85. Porsche Club sprints at Eastern Creek used to cost $220. And guess what, I didn't use my membership once, for any event. What a waste. Disgraceful!
To make amends I've entered a Twilight Drive with Instructors to learn the correct lines at Eastern Creek on 21st Jan. Then 2 days later I've got Friday off for a Private Practice day. Then I could possibly enter my first ever regularity on Australia Day. That would do for Eastern Creek for a while.
I've got to give Oran Park GP a good wriggle before it closes and I might see if I can scam an entry into Superlap on 29th March. But the front straight speed of all those boosted up rice burners kind of scares me.
Anyway that's my rant which will hopefully make up for the fact that I haven't been on here boring peoples socks off for a while.
Who else is circuit racing in 2009?

CT,
I had the same sort of 08 - all I did was a 10 day rally and that wasnt in the bug - so I made the same sort of promise to get Herb out - first event is in Feb which is a clubday at Morgan Pk,
Then a lap sprint at Oakey (first time they are holding it, so I dont know much about it) but I think in March.
Then the Cootha Classic Hillclimb in May in Brisbane
10 day Endeavour Rally from Mackay to Cape York and back to Townsville in July
Leyburn Sprints in August
and given our first child is due late August I had better not plan on too much more...
Cheers

Hi Peter (Brisdubba),
Your 2009 racing calender sounds pretty darn good. I'm itching to drive around Morgan Park and I might consider joining you for the Leyburn Sprints. You played the herbie music on a speaker outside your car last time didn't you? The bub will probably slow your plans. Just ask Paul (1303).
Hi Paul,
I couldn't turn my car into a boat. I can't keep the water out of it in the rain so imagine the ocean. That's the only reason.
Hi Cam,
What are you driving in the Marque Sports Car Association event? What are you competing against? I've never been around Sandown but I imagine the corners at the end of the back straight would be the most interesting. Good luck.
Hi Damien,
I used to be into windsurfing. Each year I vow to do more of it. My gear is just about as vintage as the car. I've got a wave/slalom board which is good fun. I guess you're a windsurfer too, being close to the beach eh?
Hi Mick,
C'mon don't dilly dally. Your car doesn't have to be perfect before you get on the track. My first time around Eastern creek was in my old daily driver oval with a stock 1600.
Come out to a private practice day and join me in blowing the cobwebs out of the driver.
So are we all heading to Wakefield Park for the VW Nationals Supersprint. I know I will be. It's my favourite driving track.

True, i just need to get into it. Let me know about a private practice day - i do need to do stuff to my car though to get it track ready - mount fire extinguisher, battery sticker - that kind of stuff i think - i really need to work it out properly. Wakefield park im looking forward too!

You can cable tie the extinguisher, even though I wouldn't.
You can make the battery triangle out of blue electrical tape, like I did at Easter and its still on the car!
If you have a Level 2S CAMS (Cornflake packet) licence you can do the private practice day, and there's no scrutineering.

Radiator clamps (er, from a water cooled car!) might get you out of trouble for mounting the fire extinguisher to a seat rail etc

as in hose clamps???
Im not too keen to stick holes in the car to mount the extinguisher.

yeah hose clamps........
why would you NOT have an extinguisher in your car anyways?..........after such an extensive and $$ (and NEATO😎) rebuild, it just doesn't make sense,sorry🙅.......probably wouldn't be acceptable for CAMS, but get one detailed as per the style of your car (chrome, painted etc)........., then swap it out with a red approved one for racing?
Mick058 ·
VW's don't catch on fire do they???
nahnah, i've always had the extinguisher, it just 'floats' around in the car - which is not too good either, cause when i need it i'll have to find it - not the best idea if your car was currently burning up.
hellbugged ·
ha yeah , believe me they do🙄, when things burst into flames it's great to know exactly where they are.....
anyways, as Glenn said, fairly easy to mount to the passenger side seat rail after you remove the seat from over there
Sides ·
Yikes Mick - an extinguisher that "floats" around in the car - man don't go hitting the brakes too hard or it'll "float" right to the front of the car !!!
Mount it on the floor just in front of the seat is the best place... mostly out of sight and completely out of the way.... and best of all you can have two (one each side) just in case....
Mick058 ·
i saw the pics! they burn good - though you had an EJ engine
yeh, a few little things i need to do really - time and space is a problem - anyone selling a house in the Carlton/Allawah area? Not to mention a loose extinguisher would make a mess of your melon if you rolled, heaven for bid?

yep - I was told to do that in my old senator by a scrute dude. They are super strong. Plus tape down the release clamp with 'race tape' to stop it being accidentally released by your feet or a heavy impact
fullnoise ·
Hose clamps is what I use to mount the metal fire extinguisher brackets (Avoid the plastic ones) to my roll bar. I had to have 2 fire extinguishers for the Dutton rally, so now I have 2. One on either side of the car mounted as low as possible and easy to get to.
You also need a secondary bonnet tie down. I used to use a tie-down strap on the bonnet handle and bumper bar bracket. Then one day a scrutineer said it had to be flame proof or something. So I got some wire and a couple of shackles which I can hook up to the inside of the bonnet handle and panel area on the front apron when the bonnet is open about 20cm. Then just close the bonnet like normal. The guys with engines up the front do it this way when they don't want to fit bonnet pins.
I've removed the sailboard, checked the tappets and bolted the race rubber up. I also lowered the front by a notch to counter the height increase from the Bilsteins compared with the worn konis.
So I'm ready for the twilight drive on Wednesday night and private practice on Friday.
Interestingly, the tappet screws are nolonger pitting. It's either the STP oil treatment I decided to try putting on them whenever I did the tappets or (more likely) my recent method of adjusting the tappets, which is not at TDC. They're Yamaha screws by the way which bolt on and have a nice hard, round tip.
Mick 058. I can't remember how long it takes to get a CAMS licence. I just renew mine every year. Once I forgot and CAMs arranged a temporary licence by fax machine on the same day.
So if you're keen to come out on Friday you may be able to pay for the full licence, then get a temporary until the real McCoy arrives.

I don't think they time the runs. I might be able to borrow some timing equipment, but its more about blowing the cobwebs out of the driver than the car.
I'm also hoping to see how the smaller rear springs and new shocks go. Hopefully I can find the understeer end of the handling balance, because I've got plenty of options for dialing it back.

I went to my first Eastern Creek Private Practice day for probably 5 years. It was 35 degrees at 11.00 this morning. And that was in the shade!
This was good for getting heat in the tyres. It's been a struggle to get the 195/55R15 Yokohama ADVANs into the 60 degree temperature window with a light car of 760 kilos and just 99.9 RWHP.
John Ladomatos manned the Pyro for me just after pit entrance. To get an accurate reading I pushed the car on the last lap, right through the last corner and suddenly into the pits before the temperatures have time to dissipate and cool.
The right rear, the loaded side, was 86 in the inside edge, 84 in the centre and 82 on the outside edge. That means there's a tad too much negative camber on the rear, but not a lot I can do about that.
The right front was 62, 68 and 68 meaning I probably need a bit more camber and maybe a little less pressure.
The high heat didn't seem to trouble the engine. It was happy right around the circuit and humbing down the main straight up to 6200 rpm in 4th. I probably did 5 or 6 laps in each of the 4 sessions. I called it quits when the needle on the temperature gauge went past the bit with the numbers.
It was great to reaquaint myself with the car. It's so easy to drive. It has a bit more understeer but I like it. It seems that if I induce a bit of understeer on turn-in and then meter it with the throttle the weight shift to the rear is a lot more gradual. The rear will step out if you want to induce it with steering input or lifting off. But I'm not that confident with it yet.
There was a few traffic problems in the early sessions. But I found the cars that I passed didn't seem to want to come out again in the following sessions. That included a Supra, R33 Skyline, current WRX and an EVO 9. The EVO was funny. His lines were crap and he had no corner speed. I sat right on his clacker from turn 2 to 12. I'd get right up beside him exiting the turn onto the straights and then he'd blast away down the straight like I was standing still. Then I'd catch him under brakes. Finally he let me past between turns 5 and 6. He picked up his pace and I gradually pulled away for the next 2 laps until the temp gauge told me that the fun was over.
It was awesome fun. I think the car is fine. There's still more in the driver. I could enter a few corners faster, brake a little later and use more throttle in places. But that will come with practice. Bring on the next track day i say.
I've now done more circuit racing in 2009 than I did in 2008.

Hi Mick,
In my experience a wider rear track will cause snap oversteer. I used to run Fuchs 6 & 7s. Now I use cookie cutter 6s and a slightly wider front track which makes my front and rear track identical. From memory you have Fuchs 6 & 8s? In other words a really wide rear track if the offset is outwards.
Theoretically the rear bar will also cause oversteer.
Do you have dropped spindles? These restore the factory front trailing arm angles and keep the front soft allowing weight transfer unlike the adjuster only method of lowering. This can potentially generate great turn-in which means less weight on the rear wheels after braking which can, create more oversteer.
I'd drive the car before fitting the rear bar.
That's pretty much guess work. You may like the car this way. Or it may not do what I suggest. Doing some pyros will help diagnose the handling if you're not sure. The only way to find out is to drive it on the track and gradually creep up to the limits. Well that's the way I do it.

yeh, i can't wait! Got my rear coils over in (so much better getting the rear end off the ground - pics in 'my ride' link in signature)
Yes, 6 and 8 fuchs, i have dropped spindles but no sway bar what so ever on the front.
fullnoise ·
I think you should run at least the stock front swaybar.
I drove a 1500 once with no swaybar on the front and it felt terrible.
I think "How to hotrod your volkswagen" says whatever you do don't run without the front swaybar.
Maybe somebody else can explain why.

does 2 inched narrowed make a difference though? less need or more need?
fullnoise ·
I notched up another 3 sessions last night at Eastern Creek. I've probably done 38 laps around the track in the last week and I'm very comfortable with the track and the car.
I've taken the oil temperature off the gauge 7 times, that's past 120C, and the engine seems fine. No oil leaks and a smooth idle, it sits in traffic happily. I must say I'm a little surprised, surely I'm pushing my luck.
The car still turns-in well but the understeer is noticable but not washy. It means you turn it a little earlier, or have to wait longer to get on the gas. But it does give you more confidence turning in. There's absolutely no incling that turning-in will make the car swap ends. As a result I almost don't have to brake for turn 4 and the car gets drifty on exit but its leading with the nose slightly.
This would be the perfect set up to build confidence for somebody getting on the track for the first time.
But, I must stay its a little boring. I need to get a time to see if its slower or faster than normal.
I'm getting the negative camber reset to 2 degrees on the front and I'm goint to reinstally the 18mm rear bar with new bushes.
I tried countering the understeer by dropping the nose 2 notches on the bottom beam adjuster and putting some weight in the spare wheel well but it did stuff all.
I hit the track in the middle speed group with some corvetts, FPV Falcon, a couple of WRXs, an EVO a lowered MX5 with a rollbar and R-spec rubber plus a few other cars. They always look miffed when I line up in front of them because they think they'll be stuck behind the VW. But I never saw anyone in my rear vision mirror all night. But I've probably got more experience than most of the people there. But they don't know that so the concept of a racing beetle is still amusing.
Finish your popcorn this time JVL?
CYA CT
Cam ·
Sounds like you're on the right track (pardon the pun), CT. What camber are you currently running on the front of the car?
fullnoise ·
I reduced the camber for the Dutton rally to get as much lock as possible to do 180s around witches hats. The car had so much turn-in and not much body roll it didn't really need it.
The car was set at about 1.5 degrees. Now I'm trying to tune the neg camber in so that the temperature is even across the tyre and I'm getting no understeer scrub. The new neg camber will be about 2 degrees.
The rear is 2 degrees and the temps indicate it should be less. So I may raise the rear a smidge but that's a day long job!
I'm finding this stuff interesting. In case you couldn't tell.

I am at the beginning of the build.
Just stripped the pan halves off the tunnel yesterday and prepping it for the new halves.
It is a 69 semi auto pan converted to manual. The body is a 54 oval.
I have almost everything for the chassis build which will see out the next few months. The major items missing are the motor (only carbs, heads and exhaust currently), seat, gauges, tyres, bumpers.
The gearbox is a dangerous special and ready with quaife lsd installed and close ratio 3 and 4th and 002 main shaft, etc.
I will build a car and an engine that conforms to under 2 litre improved production specs and run hillclimbs and lap sprints.
Hopefully something like the Dutton after a year or two of getting the car (and my own skills) in some kind of order.
Will get the car build in my rides in the next few days as I get more underway.
I hope for the chassis to be ready by May ... engine is a finance question. I would expect maybe June to have the engine well underway.
Track this year definitely. :-)

Hi Daimo,
Freeway speeds are no problem. On the last two times I've driven up to Warwick for the Drags the air temperature was in the 40s as I left Sydney and the oil temperature is about 100C. Normally it runs between 80 and 90.
A supersprint is usually only 3 or 4 laps which is fine too.
But Eastern Creek last week was pretty extreme for a few reasons
- The air temp was in the mid to high 30s
- I was doing 5 or 6 laps at a time
- The average speed is about 118kmph
- The engine spends 10 to 12 minutes between 4500 and 7000 rpm.
I think the oil cooler setup is brilliant.
I think the engine lid popped at the bottom by 2.5 inches and no front engine tin works a treat.
The biggest weakness is the standard cooling fan. I think I need a Porsche one. But that was never in the bang for my bucks game plan. It sits on the 'never gunna happen' shelf with rear disk brakes and a LSD.
The Castrol Formula whatever is apparently good to 150 degrees.
I probably only get the oil up to 130 for about a minute or 2 because when I see it past 120 I usually finish the lap I'm on. Usually.
Welcome back from holiday Jak. You must've missed your vw fix if you're on here!

Hi CT,
I should pay more attention.
So how much faster (speed too please), was your PB at Warwick?
That was basically just the smaller cam and the rockers(CB perf K8 x 1.4's now and old cam W130?)
Sounds like it is making more usable power?
Merry Christmas!
Dave.
fullnoise ·
Hi Dave,
The cam and the ceramic coating were the only changes.
The engine is alot more loser-friendly but didn't seem to have the same shove in the back from 4500. I now shift at 6500 with the CB K8 instead of 7000 with the W130.
It surprised the hell out of me that it's faster on the circuit and about 3 - 4 tenths quicker at Warwick. I think it's about 2MPH quicker but I'll have to check. Surely I've exceeded the old combo's 99.9 HP!
I'm contemplating a DMS 78mm crank for next year. Just to give me an excuse to keep tinkering.
