I finsihed the car late 2007, so far the tally is 19 trophies from 7 shows! I am proud as punch as I have done 90% of the work myself and absolutely love how it's turned out. I realize it is not to everyones liking and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I do hope these pics and stats help out anyone looking for ideas or inspiration. Thanks.
Mick058 ·
well executed.
Any plains on some more HP? That way you can justify the look a little more.

Mate you should be very proud of your efforts, an exceptional job.
It is great to see people still going in their own direction and not dioing a run of the mill strip and paint.
Some great ideas and the front bumper looks like it was meant to be there.
Hope to see it in the flesh some day
Gibbo ·
Well done mate, excellent job!
Different styles are what make the scene interesting! Sweet ride. Keep us updated.

woah! are you sure thats a bug under there and not Darth vaders transformer cousin?🥷😂

WoW!
Awesome effort to build a car that is so unique, and such a high build quality.
Thats what makes Volksys so good, you can make them any style you want.

now if that were a real intercooler up front that would be something 🙂
top job
ian.mezz ·
It looks great, it reminds me of those tuff little Aussie Racing cars.
Does it go as good as it looks????
Well done.
RBS79 ·
Thank you so much everyone!!! And thank you Jess for the photos from Jambo 2007. Yes it was finished off only the week before, gotta love late nights. LOL. Took out "Top Body Kit" that day so very pleased. Photos you mentioned by the beach were part of a "Hot 4's and performance cars" magazine shoot. It featured in issue 168.
Hoping to meet you all at Dubs by the Pub.

yeah, it's not to everyones taste, but the quality of what you have done looks excellent. You obviosly have good fabricating / metalworking skills.... Well done.

good to see new ideas so well executed -the front treatment of the headlights & bumper looks great - & certainly threatening in anybodys rear vision mirror - well done

Really like what you have done..... and would love to see some close ups of various parts of the car where the hard work has been done or what parts you are proud of
well done 👍
Baja Wes ·
Very original ideas, which is great to see. You just need a decent motor now 🙂
fullnoise ·
🤘That's a really bold design, but you've pulled it off brilliantly. Great attention to detail and consistency. I'd better stop there before I sound like a wanker.
The monza exhaust had me worried for a bit, but it's cancelled out by the Porsche shroud. So well done with the engine too.
CYA CT
matberry ·
Very very well done. Have to say like all those above, you have pulled off an original car that is truely yours and works really well. I'd also like to see more detail pics. Now I cant help but also suggest please one day upgrade that exhaust, a good 1 5/8" 4-1 with ceramic paint and fatboy or hideaway would fit the bill so much better, or maybe one of westi's 1 5/8" s/s extractors to keep the aussie flavour running. Trust us, you WONT go back to a monza....ever, they sap performance and don't last too long either.

i must say for a custom fibre job with lights and sound etc that is one extremely well executed bug ,imagine if u did a classic styled factory resto im sure it be be sensational .

Big Thanks to all involved in 'Dubs by the Grub' cruise. The beast got plenty of looks and took out "Best modified beetle (after 1967)" and "Best modified Interior". Glad to be able to mix it with the VW crowd.

looks what i imagine a modern day but old school air cooled bug would look like if they were still being made today! tip top job😉 VW beetle HSV lol:P

RBS79 ·
Some new pics of a little project I have been working on for a while... a 2 inch gilmer belt drive. Now I know it is total overkill and yes it probably detracts from the performance but I just can't wipe the smile off my face when I look at it let alone hear it running.
RBS79 ·
Here are some more close up pics a few of you requested of different parts of the car. If anyone has a certain part they would like to see better please let me know.
RBS79 ·
couple more.
skelaaleks ·
i love it good on you for doing your own thing
how did you get that effect on the black parts? Glad wrap??
matberry ·
Gilmer drive mmmmmm 👍👍👍
colonel mustard ·
Does anyone make gilmer drives for vw's??? Iv seen only 1 other in VWMA.... would sound sick!
RBS79 ·
Paint effect is created using plastic, in this case I used a drop sheet as I found it gave a better effect than glad wrap. The paint used is the trick though, it is called "marblizer" and is by a company called "House of Kolor".
As far as I know no-one makes gilmer drives for vee dubs except for crazy people with too much time on their hands at work.
psimitar ·
A very tricked out and tidy ride there. Not my cup of tea but i like the general look and detail tho I wish chromed alloys had stayed in America.
Nice stereo install too. very schmick 🙂

Probably not what I would normally go for myself but I can say it definately looks cool! I love the work you've put into it 👍
hrastovica ·
Man, seriously fantastic work!
I used to be into the fibreglass as a teeneager, but that wore off and got hooked on cal-look for the last 12 years or so. But this, this is SOMETHING ELSE. Its just out there.
I dont think you can classify this car... its just beyond anything ive ever seen.
Congratulations man! Top job!

absolutly what i was thinking, im a big fan of doing it tough and doing all you can on your own, even if u havent done it before, jumping in the deep end and having a go. Anyone can throw some money at a car and get someone else to build it, clearly you do have the skill and i respect u for creating something yourself 👍

Not my cup of tea but mate full marks for the creativity and as others have said doing the majority of it yourself. Nothing more satisfying than winning a few trophies for a car that you yourself have built!!

The rims are the exact ones that i want on my bug.
Its a 71 standard, but im planing on getting the brakes redrilled at the required PCD.
Are the rims multifit, whats the offset and did you have to modify anything to get them to fit?
Hope im nt bthering you.
Josh
polak ·
i was just talking to Dave Stocker about machining one of these up!! hahaha who did yours? or was it an off the shelf thing? iv always loved gilmers, had them on a few cars, never on a dub though, have straight cuts in mine at the moment just do get a bit of a whine going.... lol....

RBS79 ·
Hi Josh,
Always happy to help where I can, I did modify quite a few things for these rims to fit like:
narrowed front beam, 2" widening of the rear guards, custom discs on the rear and new discs on the front with a ford stud pattern 5 x 114.3mm. These rims do offer a very wide range of offsets which is one reason I chose them. From memory the front are a 15 offset with the rear around 45. I would strongly suggest finding a good store and talking to them about it.
I ended up dealing with Tempe tyres but went through a lot of crap beforehand dealing with people who don't know but are happy to take your money.
I love the look they've given myu car and i've had no trouble with them at all.
Wish you all the best.

I actually machined the pulleys myself. I am fortunate enough to work with CNC machines all day. Sorry I know this doesn't help you any but if I can help in any way let me know.

Would love to see this in person but will definitely not want to park within the vicinity of it. Awesome build RBS79.
RBS79 ·
Well the day has come and gone and the Bug has gone to a new home!!!
Short story- Had been advertising it for past 12 months, last show for the year came and it took out "Sound off series" for 3rd year running, laid down 58.9 horsepower on the dyno and was just packing up when a couple walk over and asked if the car was for sale and price..... and it was sold on the spot. Was a sad day but I'd had my fun with it and it has gone to a good home.
So to everyone on here a huge thank you for all your comments and making me part of your community, it's something I'll never forget.
VW for life.

Thanks for the remarks guys. Next project is a house. lol. Then looking at another flat four down the track but just not a VW🙁
It was awesome to finally see the car in Hot Vw's, that shoot was done almost 2 years ago so it's been a long time waiting.

Phwaor that's amazing. I was reading through it today when I spied yours and looked like a lunatic running around trying to find my girlfriend (who isn't interested at all, might I add) to tell her that this car was from Australia and on the forums.
