BUZ my drag car for Gunnedah & Warwick this year

Hi guys

Can you tell me what gear box do I need for a swing axle for drag racing. I need a used one.

What year model bug?
and what numbers on gear box do I need to look for?

As I'm putting a 1915 in my 58 bug for Warwick this year.

Thanks heaps
Rose

Best stock choice would be a '73 or later 1300 trans.
I think is has an AM code stamped on the under side.
AB code should have the same ratio, but may not be as strong in the first gear and spider gear area.

Other identifying items are a very long clutch arm and bolt-on clutch cable bracket on the side cover.
Also three bolt mount on nose one, that can be changed back over to early style with 7 nuts and a gasket.
But just solid mount that sucker with custom mounts under the bell housing and intermediate studs.(no nose cone mount).

OH!
Here you go:

I'm a big fan of L Bug box's, but your limited by your budget, as with most things.

rose ·

Yes I don't want to spend a fortune as I just want to put it in for to have some fun at Warwick.

Thanks Dave for the info much appreciated.

This is the 58 bug that I'm going to put the 1915 in for warwick and yes it is going on a car trailer to get up there.

68AutoBug ·

You wouldn't really race BUZ would you??

😂😂

Good girl.
Correct maths for you.🤓

Being swingaxle an L-box is IRS and huge job to convert to swing axle.
Plus the tall gearing will slow you down, especially in the first 1/8 mile.

A more common 1500 beetle tranny is also a good option,
but the 1300 has lower gearing,
an so accellerates faster.

OK we have a 1300 box , 1916 engine with twin 44s, we will have to make a start getting it ready for Warwick

rose ·

Here's the engine that's going in him.

hellbugged ·

either there is a midget in ya donor there rose........

or a young daughter i din't know you had.........

or are you shrinking now you've gone past 40? (they say it does happen!)LOL

rose ·

I had fun getting it down the side of the house with just a handbreak that almost didn't work. Yeah I also thought that I looked very funny like a ricer 😂😂
Do you think that it would be a good seat height for my seat to drag race and back a bit?😂🤪😂

40?!
Yeah right.

rose ·

I like you Dave sticking up for me😘. The young wipper snapper's having a go at me about being old.

RISKYBUG ·

so what bug is that 1500?
will that handle the hp's?
btw that dose look very funny you could do a 12" roof chop and still see out

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

milk crate on the floor?? Drove a beetle with a milk crate for a seat once. Was indeed an exerience!!

hellbugged ·

you pair of dags DB and Rosie 😁........we're the same bloody age (well close enough).......and since when was saying someone could be mistaken for their daughter less than a compliment

you need 1 5/8 merged exhaust for this 1916?, i'll give you one.....

rose ·

Hi Damien

It's funny a few people now have thought that Ian is my day as well so I must be doing alright 😂😂 I think its halarious when they ask can I go get my dad to talk to about the vw's.

Thanks heaps I would love the exhaust, are you going to Hawks nest car show or maybe someone from up there is going to go to the show next month that could bring it along. Does it have a muffler?

Or is someone coming down before then would be great to get it going soon as I'm thinking about taking it to Gunnedah for a run end of next month.

Thanks heaps
Rose

ps milk crates are fun to use for a seat you fall off when you go around corners😂😂

rose ·

Good old BUZ, 58 model 1192 is solid as a rock he will handle the extra hp no worries.

Can't wait to have some fun on the road with the 1915 in him.

I also need a new set of five wide wheels to fit on 4 wheel drums.

ian.mezz ·

These race seats come out of a escort that someone used to race or rally around in years ago, forgot the blokes name , they have a wire mesh under the base.

rose ·

here's a pic of my engine now with my nice extractors thanks Damo I got Ian to clean them for me 😂😂 And I have stinger to put on them as well.

vw54 ·

drags yum

colonel mustard ·

Exhausts looks heaps better now! nice. interesting seats you have there...

hellbugged ·

jeeez, should've cleaned em first hey, could have doubled the bill........😏

rose ·

rose ·

good work Rose!! lol looks like you'll be my competition/racing partner at warwick..... see how my gearbox goes too... im running a 1500 gearbox with a superdiff....... hmmmmm we'll see

rose ·

Sounds good I'll give you a run I'll be happy if I can get a 10.5sec pass from good old Buz.

I'll let you know how I go when I have a test run at Gunnedah in a couple of weeks.

Well mine is an old 6volt gear box and the bell housings been grinded away to fit the 1916 with a 12 volt flywheel in and an old standard vw clutch out of another bug🤪😂

not too worried about the time i run (although i wouldnt complain if i got a good ET🙂 ) ill be happy to not break anything on my car.... the set up is new and untested so it will be interesting to see what happens... cant wait🤪🤓

Dak-A-Tak ·

Rose , you need to through away all the extra weight . Bumbers ,interior ,side glass, anything that isn't used for racing !Less weight will look after clutch and box !
Having fun is what it's about .

JVLRacing ·

rose wrote:dona car for gear box
😍cute😂

rose ·

Yeah the bumpers are coming off and also the seats inside as well. It's all heaps of fun. I love it. Well I don't weigh much either I'll just keep Ian out of it😂😂

beetleboyjeff ·

I noticed that you had even taken the roof rack off. lol

I thought you were putting a stinger on it?

Craig Torrens ·

Rose, if you do use a stinger then make sure you go up in your jets............otherwise you will lean out!

rose ·

I do have a stinger to go on it.
At the moment with the exhaust that's on it, it shoots flames out of it with a muffler on it 😂
beetleboyjeff wrote:I noticed that you had even taken the roof rack off. lol

rose ·

Not sure if I'm going to use the stinger or not yet, thanks Craig for the info, if I do what size jets should I run?

Craig Torrens wrote:Rose, if you do use a stinger then make sure you go up in your jets............otherwise you will lean out!

rose ·

No Gunnedah drags this weekend to wet around the track it may be postponed to 1st Aug.

polak ·

yeah heard about that, what a bummer.....👎

ian.mezz ·

Rose and Buzz best time was a 10.16

Rose showing the boys her motor and the boys were impressed😂

Rose gave Buzz a good racing and i think some rust may of flown off the motor.😂

colonel mustard ·

Good work Rose. Time to ring Stan and ask him for a freshen up on the 1916? Twin plug setup with antisurge sump.... Yum!!!!

colonel mustard ·

PS - I can't wait to run my stinger (courtesy of Rohan - action day! ) on my thunderbird system! Maybe at Warwick next year... Good fun to be had 🙂

polak ·

good work rose, ran stong all weekend.... 1st pic is great! 👍

Craig Torrens ·

Not bad for a 20+ year old Pobjoy motor 👍.............I guess they are bullet proof 😎

colonel mustard ·

I'd agree with that Craig.

rose ·

Comes down to the skill of the driver as well 😂😂

I wouldn't mind taking it up to Gunnedah at the end of the month to give the v8 boys a run.

Buz did me proud. He got me a trophy for best reaction at Gunnedah last month .002 out of 50 odd competitors.
Yippee.

Craig Torrens ·

you just need the rev counter now so you can take it past 6000rpm 👍
