Has anybody had any experience with ceramic coating pistons skirts, cylinder walls or combustion chambers? I've heard that valve faces can also be done? Is there anything else that benefits from ceramic coating?
Any ideas on pricing or opinions on the benefits?
I know topless has done this, but I haven't spoken to him about it since he put the engine together.

I can smell something,is something burning馃槈

I would only coat the piston tops and combustiuon chambers, to retain heat and obtain a better burn.
KruizinKombi 路
Why?
vw54 路
CAUSE
we used to do it at QF for LAughing Larry Perkins. Only the combustion chambers and Piston tops.
Thats where you want to retain the heat and stored Energy as such.
KruizinKombi 路
I was udner the impression that Ceramic Coating could also be used to reduce friction?
vw54 路
I would rather use a Grahite spray on the skirts of the pistons.
This would asnd does reduce friction, again we used it on Aircraft Engines at QF.

Jak Rizzo got horribly beaten up for talking about ceramics here not long ago. Think you should speak to him. He has checked it out.
jakriz 路
heres the list of things that I have done & am having done. Please don't laugh at me anymore, i'm getting a complex.
All my tinware
full exhaust system inside & out including muffler my barrels, my pistons as dave has mentioned, my manifolds, my combustion chambers on my heads, my sump, my oil pump & my oil coolers.
Also, Steve & I are having our front struts done, tie rods, lower control arms & sway bars, but thats just for looks other than anything else.
regards
Jak
Ps promise not to laugh!!!!!
PPs yes it would be overkill on the street but it's all for the track remember
amazer 路
im not laughing at you but this bit ... "but thats just for looks other than anything else"... ok ok I AM laughing at that bit.
what does it look like?

Sh!t Hot - thats wot!
Dont know if ya taking the mickey Amazer but this finish is the ants pants.
The silver/chrome is "almost" as good as chrome.
IF you are after looks this is MUCH better than chrome cause it is MUCH harder and wont chip, scratch etc
HEaps cheaper too.
Example is a elcheapo exhaust that say T'bird headers that normally rusts within 2 weeks looks like a million dollars FOR EVER for say an extra $75-ish
amazer 路
me? take the mickey? surely not.
You can tell I am, the mouth is moving. (fingers?)
You can get 2 weeks out of a thunderbird? I've seen them rust as you put on the muffler putty.
Nah i just found the 'its a race car' 'just for looks' thing a bit humourous. No disrespect intended at all.
[add a bit] I really didnt know what it looks like

yeah getting it ceramic coated is around the same price as getting stuff powdercoated too 馃檪
Andy 路
Jakriz,
That's lot's of different parts to coat. Your talking about a few different processes there aren't you??
Still all ceramic though I assume.
KruizinKombi 路
So Jak, am I to understand you got the inside of the cylinders done, or just the outside? Does it make any difference?
Did you do just the crowns of the pistons, or the skirts as well?
As far as I'm concerned, the piston crowns, head and probably the valve faces are a given, just to retain heat as Dave suggested. I'd also do the outside of the cylinders purely to prevent rust (which hinders heat transfer) and the tinware to insulate it. What I'm trying to find out is whether there is any benefit in ceramic-coating the friction surfaces....
Dave, surely Larry Perkins would not have used ceramic coating without some kind of assessment of its benefits? Do you know if it made any difference?
Thanks to all who have responded, but I'm a long way from the answers I'm looking for still. :thumb
I've posted this info before & no-one said they actually made a phone call to actually find anything out. I hope someone benefits this time

Jak, I did see the post last time, but I'd rather hear it from a happy customer. I will ring them when I rebuild my 2.0 litre, but that's going to be some time off yet. 馃檪

wonder how much it would cost for a whole car...................................... mite not chip as easily as paint.
Bizarre 路
What i have heard looks good is say a set of old Porsche wheels.
Sand/bead blast them and then get then coated in clear
Comes up a treat apparently
Andy 路
Col,
I had the complete type 4 exhaust done (from tail pipe to heater flaps) by HPC.
1 1/2 years and ~40k km later and almost looks as good as when it went on!
:thumb
Never did any internals though.

Better get the pic eh :P

Hey Andy that picture was done when your motor was rebuilt i suppose, can we have an after 40,000km picture, gotta love the before and after photos, hmm please.Mick.:kiss

Lugnuts, it was a pic when the kombi was rebuilt, the motor just got a clean up. It's due for a rebuild now though 馃檨
Will try and get a photo the next time I get the digital cam. Do you want the oily side or the dry side? :P Dam pushrod seals 馃槧
vw_carrera bike's definitely not for sale, it's part of the family 馃榾 Thanks for the link though!!

I checked out the links you posted Andy... If I am to believe the supplier's claims then I have found the info I wanted, thanks. :thumb
I would still like to hear it from somebody who has done it though, I don't generally believe advertising. 馃檨
lugnuts 路
Andy,no rush whenever you get around to it,the dry side preferably i wanna see how this ceramic coating stuff holds up in real life,Mick馃槈
Andy 路
I didn't even clean it for the photo. That's about 1 1/2 months wirth of dirt.

Purple Martin 路
Andy, I can tell from the brick wall that you're parking on a slope facing uphill. I don't park facing uphill any more since a carb overflowed one night and filled cylinders and sump with fuel. It was a pain in the arse.
Andy 路
Thanks Purple,
Been there done that. I have a solenoid cut off 馃榾
koolkarmakombi 路
lol @ Andy, every kombi I have personally known has done that hey! Man that engine looks sweet, you even wiped your dinner crumbs off before you took the piccy. Bet there was a bit of cleaning.....

Damn that muffler looks great after 40,000ks,i think ive seen the light,im converted, hallehlooyah, thanks Andy and Jak.:jesus

Is it too hard to beleive that when people on this forum make suggestions or give new ideas that it really is in the hope that they help people?
What is beyond me is how it took a pic of a 40'000 k ceramic coated exhaust to convince some people.
Heaven forbid if some of us did things a little differently.
Now, I wonder if I can Ceramic coat my chidren?...............
Jak
Andy 路
Hahahahaha,
Jak I was just as bad. I had never even considered ceramic coating until I saw an old muffler on a bus I went to look at.
The bus was that rusty from having a hard life on the beach I was amazed it still drove, but the exhaust looked in great nic!!
I never bought the bus but had to ask what was on the exhaust.
Never looked back since 馃槈
PS: It CAN'T protect the inside though. They to spray inside as much as they can if you ask, but obviuosly there is a limit to how far they can get in, particularly the exhaust. Just make sure the system is sound first. My exhaust was old but had no pitted rust in it.

if you get a new exhaust coated it will just about outlive you its that good as for internals talk to the supplier this stuff works as they say i have found competition coatings to be excellent listen to what they suggest and you will get the benefits and its not really that expensive the heat dispersant is fantastic as is their graphite coating :beer
KruizinKombi 路
Jak, I was already sold, just on the comments prior to the photo, but have to admit that the photo really drives it home. That looks great Andy! :thumb
I had a look at the companies suggested, and will definitely be using ceramic coating, including the pistons and bearing journals. I'm not doing it yet though, I'm just planning and trying to work out how much money its gonna need. :o
I definitely think the extra expense will be worth it though. I'm trying to plan a motor that won't mind having a supercharger bolted on later, and heat control is the most important factor at the moment. 馃檪
So far I've decided on a counter-weighted crank (loved the sound of the kombi at the Melbourne Dyno day!!! :thumb) and stock everything else, but ceramic-coated. I inted to use programmable injection later when I can afford it, and once that is sorted I'll start playing with the supercharger. :thumb
I heard the kombi at the Dyno Day was good for 500 Nm. I don't plan to rev it hard, but heaps of torque is good!! :thumb馃榾馃榾

Kruzinkombi,
Sounds like you have had a lot of thought in ref to your new motor and the coatings that will go in/on it!
Would like to say "THANKS" for the rap you gave my Kombi (a few posts up!) at the Melbourne Dyno day.....it did sound OK, however it went better then I expected.....it will be going alot better when I get the time to tune my haltech injection and get some Berg duel valve springs and "porsche elephant swivel foot adjusters".
Hope you have fun building your motor!
regards
Mick
KruizinKombi 路
G'day Mick, I didn't even make the connection!! Well now I know who you are. 馃榾
I was more than impressed by your engine. So much so that I've decided to put a CW crank in my 2L when I eventually do it. I know we discussed strokers at the dyno day, but this motor is going to exy enough anyway. I'm more interested in finding out how good a 2L can be. Your motor convinced me that I don't need the expense of a bigger donk. :thumb

Certainly looks like it. The silver also stands up well, even to oil stains etc (not that push rod tubes ever leak do they??). I was told the black gives slightly better protection for only a few more dollars.
