Had a heap of lessons in the instructor's 121 bubble car 馃憥. Also tooled around whilst on my Ls and Ps in my mum's very beat up Datsun 180B wagon. Despite having oil in the water, water in the oil, bald tyres, needing new plugs every month or so and not having seen the inside of a workshop in far too long, it just would not die.
Soon after I got my Ps I got my '72 bug and really started to learn to drive. From there to my current golf.

Absolutely. Mine was the povvo pack, with 1850, twin strombergs, hot dog, wood interior and sunroof, plus I added TR7 alloys. The Dolomite Sprint's that were raced where the 1850, but with the 16 valve head.

Wish I'd met that cop, the one that got me wasn't cool about me being a learner, maybe the fact that I had only one L plate on, was speeding and no licenced driver with me (my mate wasn't going to admit to having a P licence) had something to do with his bad attitude.馃槵

yeah, like Joel, i don't remember "learning" to drive.............must have been in the blood 馃檮
i do think ride-on mowers are great thing to begin on for feel, opposite locks, rear wheel lock turns, closed space manouvering etc........pretty much everything
but there were lots of vehicles around the whole time I was growing up, from full blown off road buggies, bajas, country buggies, home built VW based paddock bash buggies, "bushwacker" mini bikes, go-karts..........right through to kenworth aero-dyne (400HP 18 sp road ranger),MACK trucks, bulldozers, excavators, lots of different buses and coaches.........alll well before i was thinking of getting a licence.
the day i turned 16 at 9.30 am i was booked for my L's........ mummies turbo TX5 telstar copped a beating then for a while (i'm probably lucky to have survived that period).........till i bought my first regoed beetle..........that i still own today
matberry 路
Well.......when I was 5 I used to steer (drive?) the Landy on Fraser Island ocean beach, I did get some sort of lesson in my first 'around the friends farm rally track' in our bush basher (later MY bush basher), wait for it, a 54 beetle with all the roof cut off,not even a screen, welded doors, roll over bar, baja buggy. Of and no brakes. I would have been about 12.
I, like Daimo, was waiting at the cop shop at opening time for my learners, and 6 weeks to the day passed my first and only driving test.
My dad had a funny driving test, living out west, he fronted to the cop shop for the driving test and the policeman started writing out the licence. When questioned about the test, the copper said, no need, I've seen ya driving for years !!!
I feel sorry for kids today without any experience getting on the road with a modern car that potentially goes fast enough to kill them and all thier mates.

First Driving lesson with the old man was from home to Dromana in an XE falcon auto. Had driving lessons in a Holden Nova (camry S**t box). Drove mums camry once or twice馃檮 Prefered dads Falcon as it was clapped out and he didn't mind me using it as he worked 10 mins from home but my G/f was on the other side of town so he never had to fill the thing up while I was driving it. I was also in a band at the time so it was roomy enough for a quad box, guitars, amp etc.. Got my grandfathers vw 65 notch on the road as my first car. Still own it, still has the origional reg. In almost orig condition but last june it had it's first accident since I took ownership of it in over 14 years.馃槩 Havn't driven it since I picked it up from the panel shop and ride a motorbike daily.

My mother would'nt let my dad teach any of us kids how to drive. He was a very bad driver, wheras my mother was taught to drive by her car and motorbike racing, engineer father.
I was taught to drive in a 1953 Vauxhall Wyvern, in 1959.
About 6 months after getting my licence my mother then taught me how to drive the Vauxhall as if is was a limousine and Lady Muck was sitting in the back with a tall glass of champagne on the fold down table on the back of the front seat, which was not to be spilled.
About another 6 months later she taught me how to drive like a racing car driver, with racing lines, apexes, clipping points and braking distances in the corners. That is what her dad had taught her, so she taught us all to drive like that which is why after 40 years or so each of driving neither me nor my sisters has had an accident.
TOUCH WOOD!!!!!
At that time my best friend was taught to drive by his mother who was the first woman in England to get a special drivers licence to enable her to drive her brand new 1930s MG.
He was a very good driver. She was incredible.
One wet day she did a hand brake turn in a 1955 Ford Customline to avoid an accident. She saw what was about to happen, shouted to us to hang on, threw the car into a hand brake turn, put it into first gear, put her foot on the accelerator and came screaming into the accident area backwards with the tyres smoking, missed by a few feet and then accelerated away. WOW!!! I'm still amazed by it.
I'd never seen such a thing before. She then proceeded to teach us both how to do a hand brake turn.
