Big thanks to Rod Penrose for sorting me out a brand new Peloquin slippery diff,,, looks the goods, Leon will have it all fitted up early next week so i can go break something else now :-)

How many dollars mate !!
TheMiniMan ·
$2400
yeah,,, i said something a little different to "Ouch"!!!! but similar sort of jesture :-)
I run a quaife diff in my race mini & it`s basically the same set up,,, just that this one is about 4 times bigger :-)
& on their advert they claim that if i break it, they will replace it :-) apparently they have been running over 500hp v8 powered sand buggys with them for long long time with no dramas, so i`m sold on that idea ;-)
dangerous ·
You cant just say that without showing us a picture!?

they're gonna hate you Matt with the way you drive LOL

^ what he said 😁

Tick ...tick ...tick ...
BOOM!!!!
ROFL 😀😀😀
grogy ·
wow that was quick, so u r probably the first in aust, to be the test pilot. mine is still in customs
Camo ·
$2400 - wholly hell and nothing against the product or Rod, but is this for the Differntial only or complete gearbox setup with diff.
Cheers, Kevin
grogy ·
it just arrived, so if anyone has an intermediate housing bus to bug, they want to sell, it be great
matberry ·
Wow
Matt you'ld have to be the perfect test pilot.
Good luck mate, keen to hear how it performs.
TheMiniMan ·
hee hee,,, yeah well,,, my mini one hasn`t broken in over 10 years of really hard racing abuse & i really do drive it very much harder than the kombi :-) so,,, with that "R&D" i expect it`s the axles & CVs going to go POP on the Kombi next :-)
all up this Kombi box owes me over $10K now :-( Not counting the numerous 2nd hand boxes i`ve used to keep me running inbetween Blow-ups :-)
The 2nd hand one that i just fitted a few weeks ago is about to go POP now too,,, i reckon it`s got 3 days use left in it :-) & that`s with a rubber stopper under the throttle peddle only alowing 1/3 of the go-go juice :-)
Can`t wait to get back to 30ft long, 2ft high wheel stands & dragging off ferraris at traffic lights & overtaking V8 comodores at 160kph then changing into top gear again :-)
best start saving up now for the next complete transaxle assy change-over hey??? ;-)
TheMiniMan ·
Groggy,,, how much did yours cost if you don`t mind me asking???
& they`re packed very very well hey? I was very impressed with the attention to detail & quallity machine work & excellent material chice,,, very nice looking thing indeed.
TheMiniMan ·
The Diff is in & working well (so far) you can barely notice it`s in there compared to the lockrite
It`smooth, easy to turn, no wheel skipping, no pushyness, just noice :-)
we shal see how long it takes before this one goes bang :-)
swapped over the bell housing,,, & had to drill & tap new threads into the box for the clutch cable bracket as they were basically stripped out, replaced the clutch while i was there & the entire gearbox swap only took just on 3hrs & 20mins , all by myself :-)
Off to Byron this arvo to surf for the next few days,,, anyone know a good cheap tow truck down that way ????? 🙂 :-) :-) :-) :-) ;-) :-)
General_Failure ·
wow. With all the $$$ spent you could have just gone for one of those really beefy converted paddleshift tranny setups from a getrag.
Awesome diff by the way. Living my dream, man. You'll have to keep us posted.
pete wood ·
hey miniman, has it blown yet?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Matt if you break that diff centre then the rest of us will go and buy one as we prolly wont break it in a lifetime LOL
but yeah the question is have you succeeded yet???
TheMiniMan ·
General failiure,,, i wish i had now :-) that`d be way cool ;-)
Pete,,, shhh,,, don`t say it too loud, it might hear you :-)
Brenden,,, i think you shoild all go & buy one anyway, that way i won`t feel like i`m the odd one out :-0
no,,, it`s going really really well,,, i even took out the rubber stopper that i stuck under the throttle peddle restricting it to 1/3 travel while the 2nd hand box was in there,,, i`m confident we have it all sorted now (cross fingers:-) )
It seems to be coping quite well with the massive multiple 360deg burn-out donuts with a 30ft wheel stands upon exiting said insanity,,, & imediately after throwing it into yet another series of tyre shredding 360deg donuts it still holds up well :-)
I will have to sort out some vids of it onto youtube :-) it`s a giggle :-)
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,,, the CVs are showing some slight signs of protest now (again) :-)
anyone have a set of porsche flanges & CVs they don`t need???????? :-)
grogy ·
hi, cost me 2251 not included phone calls etc
matberry ·
So Matt , are you gonna go the whole hog straight up and go 935 CV's, with offroad rubber and angles, probably worth it, instead of doing it twice...?
hellbugged ·
i don't believe any of this rubbish...........maybe a VIDEO would change my mind 👍👍👍
Adam Debisasi was running porsche CV's on his oval, and i believe he had contacts that made it a cheaper option than kombi ones 👍
matberry ·
Porsche/BMW are 930, I'm talking about 935 which are probably 30% bigger again❗
And yeah...where's those vids Matt😂sounds like lotsa fun
TheMiniMan ·
well,,, I`ve found the next weakness already :-) didn`t take long.
A little story, please bare with me for a bit---> When i did the upgrade to Albins 1st & 2nd gear kit (a while ago now) i figured i`d upgrade the clutch while i was there, because it was already starting to slip from 2nd to 3rd & from 3rd to 4th,,, oddly enough it wasn`t slipping doing standing start wheel stands tho ???,,, but as i like thrashing around in the sand pit at Moreton Island & we carry huge weights & lots of people & mountain bikes & spares & tools etc etc etc in this thing up big nasty hills 20 times every weekend ,,, i really don`t want to have a shredded clutch doin all that,,, soooo i talked with my old mate Jim Berry at italia Spares as he`s been playing with clutches longer than anyone i know & makes my mini race puk plates for me & he came up with this u-Beauty BMW 2600lbs diaph & set it up with only 400lbs of peddle pressure to save all the dramas that i had years ago with the old P76 V8 slplitty ute with 2700lbs breaking forks & cables & then funny enough peddles were breaking,,, & i just didn`t want a puk plate in this car ,,, nor did i want to keep snapping forks, cables & peddles again,,, so contrary to what i already wanted (hydro system) i decided i`d just go with What Jim was saying & fitted the Bimmer set up, knowing i can still fit a hydo later anyways
well,,, it gripped like sh!t to a blanket but just flexed everything up bad,,, the cables, the bowden cable bracket & the entire floor where the clutch peddle pivot assy is, was flexing,,,, but as i kept having way more dramas holding boxes & diffs to the dam thing, the clutch was the least of my worries (at that point)
Now,,, the whole time i owned this car (up to this point in time) hadn`t realised that it was only getting 2/3rds throttle from the linkage in the engine bay not being set up that well,,, fixed that & now have 195hp at the back rubber things (dyno dynamics dyno)
However,,, just before 3rd gear went bang at Byron,,, (not long after the autocross & the motorkhana) the new , super u-beauty Bimmer clutch was slowly showing signs of protest & it wasn`t long before it wasn`t wheelstanding anymore & the clutch was "STINKY-STINKY" every time i gunned it (der) :-) But it gripped well enough for casual driving so i figured i`d start saving for another clutch job :-(
But then the diff spat itself :-(
so i decided that, what little money i had, would be better spent on the new diff & while i was there i just (being tight-arsed) just put a new clutch plate in "Hopeing" all would be well,,, i mean the diaph/pressure plate looked ok to me :-) & the clutch felt sweet again,,, all-be-it still having major flex issues in those areas (which i will attack soon because i can`t quite get enough freeplay & have full travel at the same time,,, so i have over adjusted it all to get enough travel & of course my throw out bearing obviously won`t last too long until i fix those flex issues)
But now,,, well,,, i have found the next week link & yes it`s the clutch (again)... Jim said to send him the whole package again inc flywheel etc & he`ll sort it out,,,, but i`m going to have to hold off for a while untill i can save up some more money & also i need time to swap my minis engine over to the new one so i have a car while the kombi clutch is out,,, soooo ,,, in goes the old rubber stopper under the throttle peddle again.
:-(
No more wheel stands for a while :-(
Sorry hellbugged,,, if you can imagin i`m the first person to want to show pics/vids of my sillyness in this thing & i assure you i will do so once i`ve sorted the clutch & i think i`ll have another chat with matty-B about those porsche CV assys,,, mine are asking me to use less throttle :-)
If you`d like some videos of this doing dohnuts & wheelstands, then i believe a few people took footage of it at the Holden sporting car club motokhana late last year, but that`s another funny story :-) i`ll try to be quick
I entered the motorkhana just to test the box & to have some fun & "re-learn" how i used to drive the old splitty V8,,, well this thing has way way more grip than the old splitty ever had (it was a bitumen motorkhana) & it took a while to get the hang of it again, but the very first event it pushed bad (just like it did at the autocross) because of the lockrite diff,,, so some "aggressive" driving stytle was needed to get the bum out & tail it around spinning the rears , back off the peddle a tad as it`s lining up & it grips , floor the right foot & it stands up & launches with the flywheel effect
:-) ...But, after the first event , (giggling my head off) the cams officiials & clerk of the course came over & stopped me & said --->"Ar,,,er... we have some issues with your driving & we don`t think we should let you have another run" :-)
well, my old mate Allan McConnel came over & it all settled down & i said i`d take it easy for the next run :-) well the next run was much the same :-) (the officials were way up the other end of the car park) & i figured i could get away with it again & yep,,, you guessed it,,, more crazy arse antics from me & more frying tyres & gripping up into 1&1/2ft wheel-stands into the finish garage :-) & ok,,, they weren`t 30ft,,, maybe 15-20ft long would be more accurate :-)
i know there are videos of it as there were quite a few people holding cameras (if you can imagine) :-) But suddenly my name isn`t on the results or the entry list & no such vids have appeared on you-tube (as yet)
i`m wondering if the cams officials had a word to everyone at the conclussion of the event & maybe asked them not to show them,,, but i have heard talk from some members that say they`d seen those vids :-) so they`re out there somewhere :-)
& of course i will make my own vids once i`ve sorted the clutch & CV issues... i also have a helmet cam so i can get some in-car action too :-)
At least the box & Diff are still inside the case & working well :-) (so far) :-)
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
You are destroying a 2700lb clutch set up?? My brother has gone to a 3000lb full puck in his Type 3 and no probs so far. He's making 250odd HP on 15psi with that soon to be 20psi and aiming for 300hp. His Type 3 aint light either.
I know it's fun to get up to the antics you do but seriously is it worth the amount of money you have spent repairing breakages that could have been avoided by some more sane and sensible driving? Why don't you use one of your Mini's to race motorkhana's?
I won multiple motorkhana classes in of all things a Honda Life. 360cc of pure grunt, no wheel spin and totally boring for spectators but my times were making some of the more fancied "race" cars look stupid.
As usual good luck with the clutch and I look forward to the next report!!
dangerous ·
Aaron is using Commadore axles and CVs.
Not sure if yours will have too much angle for them,
but the 930 is the same flange and spline size,
and are wider so handle the angles better.
195 at the wheels?
.....Aaron has 570 so the commadoore stuff should be fine if angles are not excessive.
debiasi4 ·
i was thinking the same thing - there must be another problem to break with this amount of power
matberry ·
Guys it has to be the angles coupled too big offroad rubber. Been here before years ago. Commodore wouldn't stand a chance, with the larger angle. Mt dual cab with na type 4 and a lok rite gave blue printed race prepped 930 cv's a very hard time, yes the stayed together but for what Matt wants I'd go straight to 935's. Hey it's not my money anyway😁
TheMiniMan ·
hee hee,,, yeah it`s not my money either Matty,,, it`s the banks money at the moment :-(
I`ve only smashed 2 Cvs so far tho,,, one was "meant" to be new before i bought the car, but Paul (previous owner) said that there were major issues breaking Cvs for some time before a problem with the axles was found, but he didn`t elaborate much , just that he assumed it was fixed,,, The CVs that are in there now are simply old spare ones from when i had my v8 splitty, & i think they`re just crying out from old age wear & tear,,, clickety click is all that`s happening at the moment, but obviously i`m keen to sort some stronger ones anyways, so maybe the 935s would be the go,,, maybe the commodore,,, i don`t know what i`ll do just yet tho,,, the angles aren`t too bad with the whole engine & box mounted slightly lower, but the rear tyres are pretty big & eally do stick pretty dam good, so it`s just natural that the (maybe 20 years old) CVs are showing some signs of wear :-)
I keep a spare complete axle assy in the car with spare bolts etc . all cleaned & greased & good boots fitted , wrapped in plastic ready to fit on the side of the road/track if/when need be :-)
But the clutch will need something better very shortly,,, i can`t have 1/3 throttle for very long,,, i get all antsy & wanna smash the peddle :-)
My race minis isn`t ready yet & it`s not really suited to motorkhanas, as much as this Kombi isn`t :-) but i do have a buggy i`m building & it should do really well,,, just have to fork out about $6000 for the reverse gearbox & diff from Quaife :-(
traction is the name of the game in motorkhanas Brenden & you know that`s why you went so well in your little honda,,, Remember we talked about old Henry honda a while ago & he ran an automatic & did really really well because he didn`t have massive wheel spin (& of course he drove very well also)
I can see the Hydraulic mech happening soon,,, i can see another whole flywheel & clutch package happening then too,,, & i`ll sort the CVs in the middle of it all i spose
I might have to make hay while the sun is shining & finish off a few mini engine builds for customers so i can afford the kombi pleasantrys
& no,,, i`m not backing off the right peddle when it`s all back in there :-) you guys aught to know me better than that by now :-)
Twin turbos after all that is sorted too remember 👍👍👍

🙅 .....you're an idiot
but at least we get a laugh out of you 😂
now in all seriousness, why don't you try some skinnier tyres and pump them up to 60psi. that way the back end will let go before something breaks. you need a cheap fuse.
