Got bored, had some paint laying around, quite a few lagers, and a dozen ciggies on hand and..ha ha ha! here is the result
Type3Sicko ·
it still has OG paint underneath, i simply sanded, hit the worst of the (surface) rust, sprayed with rustoleum satin black and most importantly, had a lot of laughs doing it...could be the paint fumes, could be the beer eyes but i never lose it in a parking lot! kids stare and wave, parents just shake their heads. who cares! it's registered and drives...oh, and it's still a VW afterall
vw54 ·
might have been the BOG did you do the rust or just paint over it all
Type3Sicko ·
i haven't cut any rust out yet Dave, and when i bought the car it had two spots of BOG that i could see. it will go back to bare metal when i have the time and $$ to do it properly yeah, there are one or two spots of deep rust, i sanded the whole car lightly, heavy on the worst of surface rust( which covered most of the roof and a few panels, the rest is dry and tight, primed it then sprayed it, not intending to leave it like this for too long. the deep rust was hit with the steel wheel and primed but i still need to replace a few bits with new metal. never painted over rust without prepping first. I might be wet behind the ears when it comes to VWs...but rust is a bitch that needs dealing with properly. 🙂
Type3Sicko ·
thats pretty much the worst of the rust, just bought a '72 fasty so the black will stay as it is till $$ in the VW kitty to do it properly. have no real idea how the fasty is for rust...one of those impulse cheapies...got the space...may as well fill it.
izac ·
sweet man, does look a lot better than it did before!! 👍👍
i reckon if u could somehow tint your front turn signal lenses the same red as your wheels, that would look sick haha
Type3Sicko ·
Cheers Izac, yeah, there's something about yellow paint that is rough and shitty, i'd rather look at her as she is until i can afford to do the works properly...and only the once. i have a brand new set of lenses just haven't put them on, they're not far off matching the red of the wheels .what the hell? it's registered and a daily...a bit loud, anybody have an exhaust or extractor to suit that doesn't induce industrial deafness? a blast to drive though, had the old girl wound up on the highway going down to Lennox head and the speedo read 85mph.. felt quite solid too. love those Dubs
Wannavee ·
Nice work fella
Ill supply the beer n cigs if ya in Adelaide anytime soon!
Picked up a 72 today (cheers guvna, love it)
Cant post pics up for some reason,1 pic is apparently too big of a file!
MrScooter ·
thats cool!!!
sounds alot like my weekend... it must be in the air
i have a 72 square, spent the weekend before sanding her back...........
and last sat painting her up, red wheels too!! 👍
takin her to the dubs at the thingy
RATAFIED ·
coooooooooooool i was going to do mine (72 )matt black with black wheels and fat white walls
but now im mixing a blue/primer tint
MrScooter ·
yer mines in beige primer
i'm diggin the flat look.
so many advantages, you dont have to wash the car, you dont have to polish the car, saves you heaps in time and money,
we should start a no shiny paint club...
Wannavee ·
Come on scooter, PICS PLEASE!!!!! Beige primer would look friggin cool.
Just got my 72 square, dunno what colour to do.Its baby sick/mustardy yellow now.
Originally was gunna be army themed,then i thought of Gulf Blue/white roof,then Beige/white roof,Satin black/red wheels etc
I"M SO CONFUSED!!!!!!!
MrScooter ·
i'll take some fots at the show tomorrow👍
Type3Sicko ·
won't be going tomorrow as this arrived yesterday and i'm keen to work on it and the square over the next couple of weeks. Mr Scooter, I'm glad you found yourself a square, looks the goods, any more pics? The fasty has a FEW rust issues, but as Satan gave me a grinder for chrissy... you know the rest. will post progress shots for laughs
Type3Sicko ·

That looks f....ng GREAT scooter! love the colour
I been trying to post pics each day,STILL no luck
Type3Sicko ·
By all means Mr Scooter, it is a Type 3 thread, you have a type 3 square, i see no problem 🙂 Besides,it looks the goods mate, did you go bare metal? Lee, i replied to your PM, if you need more specifics i will PM you some pics and figures Cheers, Adam
izac ·
yeah that does look good mr. Scooter...didnt realise that was yours, saw it on Sunday but didnt make the connection.
i was a bit dissapointed as i had to park mine near the drive through, would have liked to been near yours and Taz's.
Adam, i didnt see a matt black square there 🥲 should have come man
Wannavee ·
Adam,Cheers mate, got pm.I sent reply,i cant attach pics for some reason
Type3Sicko ·
Yeah, bummer, Sick Girlfriend and new VW take priority over VW show, maybe Warwick? Did the weather hold up okay? good turn out.? Definitely next year.
Wannavee ·
Emails sent Adam
And a pm
Hippy-71 ·
They all look sweet as !
I have mine ready for the blue slip inspection this Thursday, fingers crossed, cann't wait to get it rego'd and cruze to work in it !
Was going to sell it but I'm not too sure now..i've become kinda fond of it after do'n it up.
I was think'n of paint'n my rims red like I had on my low-light bus ...not too sure ..
Type3Sicko ·
Don't sell it just yet, if you are that close to rego.. Roll it for a while, see how it feels, can i live with this car, am i embarrassed to be seen in it? I should think not, if you don't like the way it feels or looks or drives, change it! Won't cost the earth, VW's are blank canvasses, is that how you spell it? that's why so many people love em, self expression and all that shit... it's true, do what YOU like, it yours isn't it? Who gives a shit what people say bout your Dub, hopefully complimentary, but anyways, enjoy your Dub and don't stress, my drives to work in the morning have an impact on the rest of my day, i'm less stressed, happier coz i'm driving a car that is older than most other cars on the road that all look like each other, can find easily in a crowded car park, enjoy the sound a flat four makes, and judging from peoples looks, little kids and grownup alike Dig the old Dubs that are just that little bit different.. think about it for a while. Hapiness is a registered VW... most of the time 🙂
vw54 ·
The fasty has a FEW rust issues, but as Satan gave me a grinder for chrissy...
Please dump the MONZA exhaust B4 you kill the engine
Type3Sicko ·
Thanks Dave, the Monza belongs in the seventies, I have only turned it over once since friday, sounds pretty good, tuning wise, but they really were for looks... too much cocaine will make anyone think shit like that looks good. Still, i remember quite a few units were sold in OZ during those heady days, along with fibreglass kits, horrendous chop jobs, centre consoles, stonewashed denim jeans and matching jackets, richard wilkins.. lycra/spandex...no wait...that looked alright on some of the ladies. will be taking engine out over weekend for a look see at overall condition, roll it as is or recondition. The rust will be cut out carefully with a grinder. THAT much i know. I love VW's
Wannavee ·
Adam,youre a nutbag.Funny shit mate 😂
HIPPY! dont sell it mate,i BADLY wanted to buy it when i messaged you a few weeks back (Lee in Adelaide) but the budget didnt allow at the time
Sorry i never got back to ya.
Hang onto it and just cruise the thing.I rekn youll regret selling
MrScooter ·
kombinationdetailing wrote:By all means Mr Scooter, it is a Type 3 thread, you have a type 3 square, i see no problem 🙂 Besides,it looks the goods mate, did you go bare metal?
thanks, no i didnt go all the way back to metal, i just did some minor body repairs, a bit of a tidy up. then the spray putty undercoat! woo hoo. i'm lovin the matt paint!
the only sad thing bout the weekend was there wasnt enough type3's, if sunday was any indication, it would seem that they might be rarer than splittys, dare i say?🙄
Wannavee ·
Mate,I'm lovin that matt paint on yours.
Some more pics if you have any
MrScooter ·
yer ok, i'm on the miss's laptop at the mo. my pc just shat it's self! all my pic are on that. Doh! i'll get my stuff together and post it on membs rides.....
Type3Sicko ·
good to see a very healthy interest in the type 3's, unfortunately i have not started grinding yet, late finishes at work have left me exhausted, will hook in on the weekend...Mr Scooter, that wasn't a Dell (boat anchor substitute) your talking about, where did you buy your spray putty from, i'm liking the result, feel free to post more, pics here or start your own, i don't mind, just show us some pics, cheers.... my instability from the eighties still haunts me whenever i see re runs of the factory, MTV re runs or Mullet hair fashions for men and women. can't escape the eighties, Alans (Das Dubber) 80's revival drag Bug was tempting, but bank balance says.....not another one
MrScooter ·
naa not a dell.
pc up and running now. it was just one of those days when more than one thing failed and a few incompatability probs,,, bla bla bla...............
so heres some phots of the square from the weekend, should i mension i got the trophy for best original type3?????
i might have to paint it or do something different for next years show, to stay in the running......
there are a few more things i want to do to her yet, like most dubs,, a work in progress.
MrScooter ·
another
MrScooter ·
her bum
MrScooter ·
this is what she looked like when i first picked her up in january.
Type3Sicko ·
Sweet! I haven't seen straight bumpers on any of my rides for a while, nice job Mr Scooter, did you chug a bit of caffeine for the task of taping and painting? Also was it through a gun, i like the venetians? What was the story bout the type 3 next to yours? Green over white?
Wannavee ·
You guys have got a lot to answer for!
I spent today giving my poo yellow (thanx for the rare colour code Adam) square a fine sand down and bought 3 cans of satin black!
Attacked the thing then a mate said it would look better by using spray putty to fill the low points (its my first paint job!)
That in turn made me spray bog practically the whole car and re sand the lot.Glad i did though, lots better than my first attempt.
Tomorrow should see the thing totally painted with 2 more satin black rattle cans, paint the recently painted white roof to bright red and I'm done.
I swore a budget of less than $100 and I'm well inside that (except the scotch)
Will try n post pics tomorrow night
Apologies to the purists
Cheers for the pics Mr Scooter, love that colour
Type3Sicko ·
Can't wait Lee, how are the fingers after using rattle can to paint your square?still good enough to lift a scotch or four 🙂, i used ten cans on the square, mind you, i hope you used a mask or respirator when painting AND sanding, that shit gets right up your nose and things don't taste quite right if you don't use one. I'm taking the engines out of the fasty and square today, lifted the tar boards out of the square (we had a lot of rain, that i seem to get caught in EVERYTIME) there are a few pin holes near the accelerator pedal and under the passenger seat, the fasty was retrimmed not long ago throughout, so as much as i hate it, the carpets and boards will come up as well to find, hopefully nothing. I will post pics tonight, Dave, just out of curiousity, why are the Monzas not so good? is it the design and overall flow of exhaust gasses or are they just plain Crap and bad for your donk? Hey Lee, anything looks better than Poo yellow, except of course Poo brown, sorry if you have a Poo brown VW, to each their own
MrScooter ·
sounds like you guys have been busy.
i did paint mine through a gun, works out a lot cheaper. 4ltrs of spray putty undercoat ( i only used 2) and 4ltrs of thiners, cot me about $80.
Type3Sicko ·
Mr Scooter, did those weathershields come with the Square or did you purchase? if you did buy em, where from? Looks good. 4 litres, holy crap, that's four kilos extra the poor little 1600 has to cope with... what was the rust like when you bought it?did i mention how envious of your bumpers i am. Nice ride mate 🙂
MrScooter ·
the weather shield i got from george @ classic veedub. they work too!, i also got from him some door and decklid rubbers, eye lids and empi short shift kit.
the blinds i got from vintage in sydney with some other stuff... oh and some bits, sportswheel, disc pads and things from micks.
hardly any rust in the square when i got her. just a little bit in the bottom passenger door. the floor is dry as', and bits of surface rust where the paint had worn thin, that happens after 35+ years or so. she looked like some worked had been done before. the vents around the wipers have been removed.
i just got into her and gave her a tidy up. and sprayed heaps of rust proofing stuff in every little nook and kranny...... ahh love that smell.......🤪
she had a ding in the right side rear tail light where it had been backed into something. i banged a few if these out , little bit of bog straighten it up.
i have a few more things i'd like to do.......... like painting the roof matt black, and fitting a wooden bowed roof rack.. maybe also a meshvisor, some spots... and then..... and then..... where do you stop?
we could always slam her!! 🥷 but the front scrubbs out already......... 😠
keep those pics coming, lets see how those rides turn out...
wanna see you guys at the next meet, whenever that is? klubfest??
Wannavee ·
Yeah Adam, all painted.Sent a pic to yiour email coz i still cant post pics DAMN IT! Always says 'file too big' with one photo!
Anyway,i had Waaaaay too many scotches,6 cans of satin black and one of gloss red for the roof.Looks fine to me and got the thumbs up on its first drive so i reckon i got the desired result for my first paintjob.
A mate is getting a square now, after seeing what can be done with mine, thatll be good when he's finished it.Real fussy guy with bodywork. Not like me
Type3Sicko ·
Happy Days! Great to see peoples enthusiasm for the underdog...incidentally, does anyone know sales figures for type 3 ? just the years 1969 to 1973. I had a look under the fasty's carpets...nice and dry, so, it's just rust in the c pillars, winscreen, rear quarters (minimal) and the bottoms of both doors, should keep me busy for a while. keep those type 3's coming guys and girls.
Type3Sicko ·
Lee and Mr Scooter, are you guys running a standard exhaust on your type 3's, if not, what have you got, just curious to see how many people have had their rear valance bent and mangled to fit a system....this shits me to tears...Yeah mate, We'll just bend that useless bit of steel back out of the way...better yet, lets cut some holes instead!👎
Wannavee ·
Got a set of extractors, thats about it Adam.Dunno what brand they are though.
Theres no cutting or damage to rear valance
Tucked in nice. Will try n send a pic to your email
Type3Sicko ·
Cheers Mate 🙂
MrScooter ·
i have extractors off the heaterboxes, then a hot dog! thats it!......👍👍
that ratty one (green bits on white and the rest) that was parked next to me at the dubs, had extractors and a small stinger, LOUD!!! but i liked it!😂
cheers mick
Type3Sicko ·
Next time you are down this way Mick, give us a bell or txt, have a look see/ compare type 3 illnesses. have a good one.
MrScooter ·
yer no wuckers!
Type3Sicko ·
taking engine out today for a new clutch, pusrod tubes, dual carbies getting a tweak and a general look see at what else needs replacing, change oil, plugs, points and new rotor button, degrease engine and gearbox, fixing exhaust as it's too pharking loud, my neighbors give me the hairy eyeball when i leave for work at 6.30am...pretty rude but that's volksies for you...also expecting to have this work cut short as my 1st nephew or niece is expected this weekend, we have a type 3 set aside for their first car, should be finished by the time they are ready to drive, start em young i say 🙂 there's enough hyundieds around as it is.
Wannavee ·
Type 3's will still be around when Hyundeads are converted to Coke cans!
Type3Sicko ·
Amen to that good buddy 🙂 did an engine swap yesterday, fasty into square...square being stripped for modest rebuild...1641, the fasty engine turned out to be more powerful than i expected...will run the Monza exhaust till i get my new system. gave the engine bay a good clean...Kero and a brush did a bang up job. the engine out of the square has shat it's oil pump seal well and truly, found a dented pushrod tube leaking oil as well, the clutch has almost given up too. will put pics up tonight after i have tidied the shed a bit...and had a few lagers, gotta keep the fluids topped up 😁
Wannavee ·
Bloody hell Adam,youve been busy!
Started to clean engine today after a huge night and found a pretty full on fuel leak.
Changed all fuel lines just incase there is other ones knackered.
NO wonder its been chewing fuel!
Sounds like i have issues with reverse gear too.Doesnt sound real good when reversing, sorta whiny grinding sound
A bit like listening to my ex missus 🙂
Type3Sicko ·
Grab yourself a clutch kit Lee, no biggy to put in, just have a spare pair of hands for engine out/in muscle work. I think my Sachs kit was less than $230 from Mick Motors... drives like a new one, tidied up the shed afterwards, makes a difference to be able to walk around not over VW's to work on them
Type3Sicko ·
the engine swap was no drama...it's always good to keep the fluids up on a hot day🙂
Type3Sicko ·
Engine went in easy, drives beautifully, shifts quietly but i cannot get the GEN light to go out, read wiring diagram (sober) cleaned wires and contacts...still no good. Thought i'd see how the wheels off the fasty would look with a quick wipe with this stuff, will remove wheels and take tyres off to polish entire wheel properly..good stuff.
Type3Sicko ·
this is after about five minutes of gently wiping rim with a small section of the cotton wadding, will probaly use Mothers and a bit of gentle toothpaste and brush to remove tarnish, should be good after i've hit it with the dremel
type3kid ·
dude your shed is awsome....
Wannavee ·
Youre shed sucks,i hate it DAMN YOU!
Ill take the white square (??) in the background!
Ive booked local vw guru to go over the square,he'll probably put a clutch kit in it with a major service and safety check.
I havent got time mate,i work as a contractor in building industry and it keeps me busy.
And my shed is a 6x3mtr tent from Supercheap with a dirt floor thats not real good for doing mechanical stuff.
I spose you could call it a shent?!
MrScooter ·
Wannavee wrote:Started to clean engine today after a huge night and found a pretty full on fuel leak.

NO wonder its been chewing fuel!
i had the same prob last thursday, i had a massive fuel leak, the car reaked of petrol, i lost nearly 1/4tank driving home. which is only 10ks down the road....
had that panicky sick in the guts feeling, all the way down the mountain from cooroy.
it was one of those 'chatting to God moments - PLEASE GOD, DON'T LET ME BURST INTO FLAMES.........
changed all the fuel lines...
for only six fiddy..
we live for another day!
move onto the next thing now... the door rubbers and front window leak, but only when it buckets down...
Wannavee ·
Getting major service wednesday.I'd rather someone that knows these things go over it for any potential probs.
Have bought an extinguisher today though!🙂
On that note,i saw a squareback owner at the shops last week and where was his extinguisher? In the boot screwed to the engine cover! WTF?
Not the brightest of ideas ive come across 😂
Type3Sicko ·
Fire extinguishers are a must I usually carry two, one strapped to the firewall in the cabin and one in the rear cargo area...$30 a pop makes sense tp protect your car, not forgetting to mention the people/family that ride with you, i replaced the fuel hoses in the engine bay with new stuff and the hose/tube that comes off the bottom of the fuel tank (taking tank out is easy and recommended if your VW has been sitting for a while, POR 15 have a tank cleaner and sealer kit that works well and doesn't cost the earth. thanks for the kind words on the shed, it's a bitch to clean if you let it go...at least i can see the floor. Mick, i've had that feeling several times and not always close to home either have you replaced the fuel line from tank to engine bay?, basic leather tool roll with spare hoses and clamps in the front luggage area is a must, how are other peoples Type 3's going, any dramas with repair/resto? I'll be stripping engine this week to the bare case, haven't stripped an engine since the 90's and getting out the lowering stick is on the cards as well...what shocks should i consider if i'm only dropping the square 2.5 inches? the ones on the square at the moment are okay but once you get into the sticks and away from the highway they feel limited and harsh
Type3Sicko ·
found the reason why the ride was shithouse...front bump stops? what front bump stops? and bushes...what are they? Mushed and non existent...oh and are shocks supposed to rebound? ...well up in the air she goes, it's only money 🙂 more pics to learn from soon.
Wannavee ·
Mr scooter, where did you get the clear front indicator lenses fella?
MrScooter ·
lenses are from classic veedub, you will have to modify them. a little bit of re-drilling the screw holes, and a bit of sanding on the ends to make them fit..
like most veedub stuff, there's always something to modify and nothing ever works out right first time through.
although wheni lowered the front end, it was too easy and i did it in only 20min, for both sides......
my car is running a bit rich at the mo. you can smell the fuel through the exhaust,, any way to fix this?? like how do i adjust the mixture, with out throwing out the balance and stuffing the whole thing up?
Type3Sicko ·
I'm having the same dramas Mick, bought a carby kit to rebuild both but i guess you don't want to go that far yet...1 km from home, cruising along at 110 a big ole BANG! puff of black smoke through the tail pipes and she died COMPLETELY...rolled to a stop and had a few ciggies, ended up jump starting from second battery...chugged and puffed to life, another puff of black smoke and off she goes, like nothing happened, i'm swapping generators today, plugs and points...very frustrating...let me know if you have any luck Mick. cheers, Adam
RATAFIED ·
Type3sicko what sort of fuel line did you use and what size im thinking about changing it all aswell
Klaus ·
good to see hippy 71 that the wagon is about to be regoed sat in my yard for long enough, a very good wagon, motor was out of a 70 000 km 70 fasty, floor from a 71 wagon that had a side hit early on in its life so minimall rust and body is a 72 which used to be an auto and interior that is pretty clean and the back seat looks like it had never been sat on. but what it needs is one of these
Type3Sicko ·
Carl, i used the standard 6mm fuel line, Klaus...when the dollars are in the bank and a non original type 3 lands on my doorstep i'd love to do that...looks like a full engine bay there.. Cool
Wannavee ·
Klaus,WTF is that in there?
Dunno bout ya fuel problems guys.My missus hasnt worked on too many vw's so she just said (being the smartass she is) 'Its a fuel problem!😂
She also mentioned (as a non smartass) that it could be timing??
Cheers for the lenses info scooter
Type3Sicko ·
have cleaned up the carbies a bit to see what they looked like under who knows how many years of neglect, have had a trying weekend with jump starts, no starts, almost start and then finallly kick over...then stop. Vokda and Kaluha are helping in this matter
Klaus ·
ej20t in a previously unmolessted 68 wagon , goes just a little bit better than stock ha ha. Wagon looks pretty average and is now well known in area for pissing all over commo and rice body kit boys. one guy was winging to a common friend that its not fair that a shit box vw made him and his crapadore look bad .
With your carbs check balance bar flex pipes and that the aluminium top half isnt warped leaving a gap between the bottom metal throttle plate . I've rebuilt many a type 3 carb and always had to flatten out carbs using file or sandpaper on a flat piece of timber or steel.
another reason why i went subi power. Oh and that pump circuit of carbs has the ball bearing unstuck.( under brass threaded plug in float chamber)
Type3Sicko ·
Thanks for the pointers Klaus..that subi powered type 3 does look the goods, did you have much trouble with the plumbing.?
Klaus ·
not really just alot of them, 7 in total . 2 x rad , 2x heater, 2 x int cooler rad , 1 x rad overflow. Wiring was the most time consuming as the front cut i go was from the top of the range legacy so cruise ac abs central locking auto and a crap load more, worth it in the end.
Type3Sicko ·
looking at that spaghetti juction of wires makes me think i have nothing to bitch about... what modification do you need to slot the subi in the back? engine mount, bracing etc...looks like a head full but the extra ponies would probably be worth it
Klaus ·
basically the motor sits in a cradle using factory subi eng mounts, which bolt up to 10mm plates welded and reinforced at the back and the front is mounted up near where the irs subframe mounts, the whole cargo floor was cut out to fit water to air intercooler. And theres a brace welded across there too which has the subi engine stabiliser bar mounted to.
Type3Sicko ·
probably woud'nt be much of this happening too often eh Klaus?
Type3Sicko ·
you were right about the carbs Klaus.."little bit" of sanding to do, cheers for the info. found a slight crack , though it looks like it's from the inside out...WTF ?
Klaus ·
Plenty of that in the yard with 3 other type 3's ( 64 ,65 notch and 67 fasty) and 3 splitscreens and a lowlight sc, so never a dull moment.
Type3Sicko ·
i like the old stuff better than the new stuff..
Hippy-71 ·
The ratwgn is definately up for sale 😠....have other projects that need funding....so I'm open to realistic offers anyone....12mths rego, new tryes, lowered shocks brakes goes great heaps of power I was supprised how well it goes !
Will also consider part trades.....
Type3Sicko ·
took the heads off the original engine from square, i don't think they have been off EVER! i drove this fairly gently for 2500 klms before i pulled the engine, not knowing it's complete service history...books stamped up to 90K. spark plugs looked normal, carby manifolds nice and serviceable, carbies were okay apart from idle screw broken off and float valve stuck.... then i found these catastrophes. how do i remove the wrist pin? holding piston on? Gently i know but it's in there pretty damn tight? who sells heads or machines them on the Gold coast?
Type3Sicko ·
new barrells and pistons are on the way, just wondering if there is supposed to be burnt oil in the inlet manifold? I'm thinking not, curious as to why? and what do these numbers signify? 057 0n the left head and 067 on the right...anyone? Thanks, Adam
Type3Sicko ·
I'm after some engine tinware for the square, is there anywhere i can buy complete NOS tinware? or do i need to get a sheetmetal Whizz to make some up from my mangled mess? Muchas Gracias!
