new battery

Just had new battery installed my car after having it continuely not wnat to start after stopping the beetle. I also had an orange light come on next to the indicator arrow (on the left of the arrow). My car is now running fine and starting after the engine has been stooped. However when I am going over 50kms the orange light still comes on faintly. Does this mean that I need to getr my alternator checked? I only got the battery installed this morning before I went to work.

If it is to do with the alternator, how much will or should it cost roughly to repair/replace?

If anyone can answer my qusetions that would be lovely.

been a long time since i was on here so hello everyone.

What year is your Beetle? Is it a generator or alternator for sure?

Maybe a couple hundred to replace alt or gen. It is worth checking if it is regulator or diodes. An auto electrician you trust could help, or if you have roadside assist, they could come and do for free if you have not had too many calls.

On my Beetle the red light also is a warning for the fan / fan belt.

Has this been checked on your car?

the coloured gells fade after 40 years

the oil lights in pre 68 beetles are actually green but most have turned yellow by now

never understood that one, its not labled oil and green....
anyone who knows nothign about cars wont do well with that one

Very interesting that the oil light gell is green! i have just checked a couple of NOS pre-68 speedos I have and YEP they're green for oil!

Any that I have used have always shown as amber/yellow!

I never knew that! Learn something new everyday!

Thanks for that!

GREEN was always OIL in early VWs...
RED was generator charge...

Later they changed them both to RED and eventually labelled them... due to US regulations..

If the green light is still the oil lamp...
NOT Good... replace the oil sender on the engine...
they cost under $10...
hopefully that may fix the oil pressure problem...??

If someone has switched the lamps in the speedo...
then the green lamp would be Generator charging...
which again is NOT good...
You have generator or regulator problems...
when the [normally red ] generator lamp comes on..
it means Your battery is NOT being charged...

Left Green Oil pressure lamp - Low or No oil pressure
Right Red generator charging/not charging/broken fan belt

RISKYBUG ·

also what model is your new battery?
i just got a new one for my sbug and it's a smf57
it look the best one to fit and also terminals around the right way
and has a nice little charge indicator
so what model do others run in there vw's ?

68AutoBug ·

I always use EXIDE batteries..

the P460D has the recessed posts and the terminals are on the correct side..

I also bolt the battery in place using the VW bracket

best still to cover the battery with a piece of rubber or mudflap

as When people put their knees into the back seat

the seat comes down and the springs short out the battery...

[also sold as Champion brand..P460D]

din 66 type works for me
euro model batt, terminals correct n recessed
larger size for tunes when parked..
i always go for a factory second
1/2 the price n go for just as long.. 😉

btw as an extra precaution i have a sheet of 12mm thick rubber covering over the top of the battery
so no custard guts in the back seat gets a hot fried ass which means no more ride..
+ carry a fire extinguisher 😵
