Here are some pics from between 1990 and 1995.
Not that long ago.
Ross Freestone at the 1990 VW Nationals:

Is that Henry's bum?
dangerous ·
Some from Oran Park and some from Eastern Creek.
Most of these shots are by Stuart Twidale from Toowomba.
dangerous ·
This was the 2442 engine that ran as quick as 11.29 from memory..119mph.
We never got to run that week end due to pesistent showers.
It was a long drive home with no racing and no doolar support except my own wallet.
I cant believe it has been that long since I raced interstate.
dangerous ·
This may have been as early as 1988.
No Pink Here!!
dangerous ·
This one from the mid ninetys,
after running a mid ten pass.🤓
That's Craig Brown on the left,
and Michael Nash on the right.
Bergs engine 1995 VW Nationals.
Check out the Araldite Manifolds.
Didn't hurt, that sucker ran pretty hard.
And my car at the track only the second time I ran it, early 1991.
I had just changed the tyres to front runners
and proper drag slicks.
A 1200 is slow ·
The last time I saw that ghia it had a turbo with a holley on it...I think it ran an 11.4 or so the day I saw it. That was about '94 or so I think. Any idea if it is still around? It was a nice car.

Hi Steve,
yes that is Henry trying to wrangle the drive job off Ross.
It is ironic that that very Bum
was the only thing stopping Henry from having a go.
Sorry Henry, but that is your words!
(I have a memory of an elephant.....OH,and the enormous genitals too, but that is a story for later).😂

Hi Mark,
Yes Mark still has the Ghia,
but it now has Autronic on it.
It ran as quick as 11.0 with the Holley.
Initial dyno testing with the EFI produced a slipping clutch,
and without an ANDRA sanctioned track,
and a new family, Mark has had different priorities since last century.
Hopefully the new found VW drag racing enthusiasm in Victoria may stir up the blood.

Great pics Dave....seems like not that long ago.🥲

Great pics Dave.
Especially like Henry's buggy.
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Young Pagey almost the long haired lout LOL
Dave do you know what Stuart Twidale is up to these days? didn't he used to have a pretty stout Volksy as well??
vw54 ·
I will have to dig out some of my old pics and scan them

Stuart sold his blue bug some years ago.
It ran as quick as 11.36@117.
It had a Craig Brown 2387 with Autocraft heads.
It is in NZ now but is missing in action.
Stuart had a very nice R32 Golf for some years
with all the bells and whistles,
and various upgrades,
but I see it is for sale in the latest VWMA.
Probably so we can't hassle him for not running at Warwick!
debiasi4 ·
my first tripto the natswas in '95 to see the bergs run when i was 15 - it was unforgetable to see so many tuff vws - i even got to go to henrys house and sit in his buggy it inspired me to build my first one ill never forget his shelf full of sets of 48idas

BeetleJuice ·
Here is Stewy's Streeter complete with stinger!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Cool thanks Craig!!
Yeah we need some vids of Dangerous' blown set up in action. The sound of a supercharged volksy will get anybody enthuiased!!
I do have some old Jambo videos somewhere at my Parent's place. Might have to dig them out and find a video player to watch them on!!
matberry ·
I got vids, but how to post????
Great shots guys
vwsteve ·
i remember stewys car, i always loved the way it looked and sat nice
BeetleJuice ·
It's a shame Stu sold the car when he did because we never saw it's true potential! He was very conservative off the line and short shifted through the gears.
Should have been good for flat 11's or even a high 10.
CP
matberry ·
And he sold my old trailer with it to NZ.....this was beautifully put together, but I think you could count the number of passes on one hand!
vwsteve ·
i would really love a set of rims like on his car, anyone know of any?
Dak-A-Tak ·
Look at those legs ! Days when yellow car was very simple but All my mates helping to crew made it great fun .
I,ll put up sum pics soon , scan , resize, photobucket ?

Dear "Dangerous Dave"...Thank you for the squiz down memory lane with the pics !!! Yes that is definitely Henry lending a hand & dishing out wisdom before a pass at Willowbank.Henry now works for the NRMA in NSW & instructs
field service knowledge to the breakdown crew in the network. He always looks me up & I make sure that he comes around for a meal at diinnertime...that way I know he is not on the milkshakes & pies like "Rocketman" Rod Penrose.
The 2nd engine (2440) fitted to Houndog that was used at Surfers in 84 & Canberra in 89 was purchased by Henry & I am pretty sure it was turbo modified & used in the Ghia project of Mark's car as Henry had some form of racing/mateship relationship with Mark.I do remember Pagey well..he was only a young boy when I first saw his yellow bug at the Valla Spectacular in the 80's...I also remember the immaculate presentation of his car...well done Pagey.I envy his hairstyle back then as I do not know how to use a comb anymore !!!!

Since we are all dishing out friendly jokes.
I think you might still be able to use a comb...
..... on your back there Ross😂
(see second pic in singlet!!!)
Houndog ·
Dear Dangerous Dave...as in the interest of power to weight ratio do you
suggest a wax ?????!!!!!!
humpty ·
Wow that brings back some great memories.... 92-94 in particular as I was living in Sydney back then and hanging with the Hellbug crowd.... I have some nice pics of Henry and B4's Ovals near the lake at Oran park somewhere, plus pics of Marks Ghia, the old blown 1776 (?) motor in your pan car Dave, Keith H's EFI/intercooled/T04 Blue Oval and heap of other cool shots.... Must drag them out....
I think it was 95 that I drove from here in WA, via Adelaide to make the nationals... B4, AB and myself had an awesome road trip too... We must do that again next year I reckon... Maybe to Portland next time!

I found this picture when I was moving house recently. It was probably about late 1997 at Willowbank. Car had the 1835 motor at this time with 48IDA's. I will have to check my notes but best ET/MPH of this setup was around 11.89 @ 111MPH.
Dak-A-Tak ·
Michael , I remember the day well , really the X girls only !!😂 That car was one little rocket ship .
Here is a couple of my old days ( when I was young )
An lovly friend .

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Gee Pete that haircut LOL
One of your old flames stroking your stinger LOL
Stanley ·
cool Pete...what sort of times were you running back then?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Back then it was all about looking cool hey Pete??
from memory he was running 11/12's.
dangerous ·
1992 winternationals.
As you can see I was ahead of Ross in this photo.😂
Actually the truth was that Ross had run well into the tens by then,
but on this run,
he ran an 11.1 @ 120mph,
and I broke a type 1 CV joint.
polak ·
hahaha those pics a brilliant, well before my time, as well as a veedubber..... 😂 i love all the nostalgia racing stuff, as u can see how everything has evolved and changed to what it is now.... i still have a set of Henry's wheels with the original rubber he raced on!! look trick on my bug, but u wouldnt want to run them.🙅 rears still sticky but fronts need a bit of the old Bert Munrow black bootpolish to fill in the cracks 😂😂
for those who dont know me or my car, these pics were taken about a year and a half ago, totally different now🤪
Houndog ·
Dear Dave...that shot in 92 was taken when we were reversing to straighten our cars to stage...sorry about

When I was young coming first was a proud moment.
Now coming second is much better for my image with the ladies.
