What are these 3 hole through the rear firewall for?
jedidan ·
This is where the electrical junction/outlet box attaches in the engine bay.
I've got one in my '76 bug. it is attached via 2 self-tapping screws.
the third hole (bottom) is an earth connection that goes to the box.
Not sure myself what this junction box does, perhaps used for hooking
up testing equipment during a scheduled maintenance or service.

When I dismantled my 72 S I noticed these holes and couldn't remember if I took something off in that spot. My Beetle dosn't have this J-box installed? Could it be for the computer diagnosis hook up machine thingie?

My 75 L bug has one, and I am sure that the manual calls it a connection for the test computer. I will see if I can find the page when I get a chance.

yup volkswagen computer diagnositic plug
aus got them in 72 but US and such got them earlier which is why our bugs had the mounts but no plug
its all redundant equipment now, theres only a handfull of diagnosis test centers left in aus
i pissed all mine off and used the wiring for gauges
sure beats pulling new wires thro the black hole

Yes it was the VW diagnostic connector and it worked well back in the old days when the dealers had the diagnostic analysers.

it was just connected to a heap of senders and circuits around the car
there was a really good site on the net ages ago somewhere that explained all about it
the circuits tested for things like blown bulbs bad earths etc
most of the senders have been chucked over the years tho
there was one on the factory battery that checked the water level, another on the crank case that measures TDC and even one on the spark plug lead and one of them could test for compression somehow
most ppl have never seen the spark plug lead sender it looks like this
usally got chucked after the 1st lead change
