Wanted - Assistance With Importing A Car

Hi all,
I have been contacted by a dubber from overseas who will be moving to Canberra soon, and wishes to bring his left-hand-drive 69 VW. He has asked me for advice on importing the car into Australia, specifically:

''So far, it has never been a problem to import and register it. But Australia seems to be a more complicate case. I have already visited some relevant websites and I'm aware that Í must bring it in as a vehicle manufactured before 1 January 1989.

My request to you guys is: is there any experience / assistance / advice you can give/share with me to help to bring the car into your country?''

If anyone could offer advice, assistance, and certainly the relevant websites and contacts for importing a vehicle, I will gladly pass it on to the gentleman. Thanks!

I've imported a 75 Corona Coupe from Japan. It's not too hard.

Everything your mate needs to know is right here:

He will not have trouble with a 69, even in LHD. Just fill in the forms and pay the money.

He'll have to pay GST on the value of the car. He may have some minor hassles registering the car in the ACT with LHD, but it should be possible. An engineer's inspection will probably be required before registration and new seatbelts.

Oh yeah, get the car steam cleaned inside outside and underneath to avoid any hassles with customs. If they find a spider or dirt on the underside, then they will demand it be re-cleaned at a cost of a few hundred dollars.

Also, make plans to collect the car as soon as it clears customs, otherwise the port will charge you $170 a day for storage!!

Cheers,
