My 1303 - Colonel mustard. SOLD.

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/75617/my-1303-colonel-mustard-sold

Joel ·

a few observations, the momo wheel, what diameter is it?
Lbug speedos are impossible to see with anything smaller than 350mm

breather box is for hooking up abit different to that
usual install is either side goes to the rocker covers, and the front one drains back into the case, u have a mechanical fuel pump so cant drain back there, what i did was tapped into the side of the alt stand, u need to original breather hose still hooked to the air cleaner

i did a howto somewhere on the bushing-o-doom
think its in tech mods
i also did one on igntion barrel and switch replacement but i never ended up putting it online
add a relay while your at it

Joel ·

how u have it above would work

only thing u dont wanna do is create a sealed system which is what i see alotta ppl do with those bugpack breathers

ie 2 outta ones to the rockers and the middle one to the breather connection on the oil filler, no breather to the atmo or air cleaner

that pressurises the case and forces oil outta all sortsa a places

my steering wheel is a 350mm momo and my speedo is unobstruckted but my seats arent vw and sit abit lower

helps if ur not 6'11 either

colonel mustard ·

Yeah, No I'm not that tall. I'll throw up some photo's once the wheel is in.

With the breather, its not sealed on the unit itself, but I see what you are saying. I think having one hose go to one side air cleaner on the carbie sorts that also?? They old kadron air cleaner has a place to stick a breather tube on, and that will help too. 🙂 thanks for the ideas...

What is this about a relay..... :P are you talking for the ignition??

Joel ·

oh yer relay....

between the ignition switch and the solenoid

by the time the power goes from the battery in the back up to the ignition switch in the front, thro the pissy little contacts in the switch then alway the back to the starter, combine that with the load a solenoid takes to pull in ( not huge but still alot for a circuit like that) u can understand why vw igntion switches fry after a few years

chuck a relay under the back seat and run some 8 guage from the battery to it then to the solenoid.

easy as

colonel mustard ·

Cheers Joel!

Any other ideas people.... any sweet ideas for stuff...???

colonel mustard ·

should I put that fuel filter in the engine bay... most say no..... Im trying to work out how to not have it touching the exhaust. zips?

psimitar ·

colonel mustard wrote:should I put that fuel filter in the engine bay... most say no..... Im trying to work out how to not have it touching the exhaust. zips?
You should have 2. One under the tank and one by the pump. First stops crud from the tank and second stops crap from the line 🙂

Joel ·

theres no reason for 2
1 under the tank is all you need, and a quality metal EFI one not one of those pathetic $2 clear plastic rock catchers

he already knows that one near the pump or engine fullstop is just stupid and not recomended

colonel mustard ·

did the fuel line/filter a few days ago. the front section neds to be done in a few months, but the tank needs to be taken out to do that (get the tank cleaned out also).

scrapped the kadron idea for now. having the 34pict rejetted/kittted shaft done, ignition switch, new dampner, and fuel pump going on tomorrow/friday.

The shifter bushes are a few weeks away, as is the clutch cable. steering wheel should also be in the next few weeks.

saving the breather/exhaust/clutch for when i do the new engine. Have sanded the engine lid ready for painting, and gettting hoodjax of VWCOOL in a few months... (start my job next week... money neeeeded!!)

colonel mustard ·

Update!!!

Iv have the carbie shaft done, and a kit done also.

Got the new fuel pump in, and the steering dampener also, and the ingition switch. Its going alot better... but not perfect. the exhaust will always let me down.

colonel mustard ·

Also, I have decided that the new exhaust will wait for the new engine, as will the kadrons, which I can still get my hands on. The breather box will also be going on the new engine. It's probably going to be a 1776. 🙂

colonel mustard ·

the update is.... that I'm still a poor student... haha. but I have organised some replacement guards... which i just need to save for.. and still dont have the kadrons or new carbies of any type. Going to keep the body rough now, and get some widers wheels for the rear and new steelies for the front (they are all pretty beat up sadly...) Won't be driving to warwick most likely. However on the plus side, hopefully once I graduate at the end of the year and go into a full time job, the new engine will be a go ahead, after a slight lowering and brake upgrade... 🙂

bajachris88 ·

What u studyin bro? and where?

I think i have seen a bug like urs at UQ.... am i right?
i'm stuck within the confines of QUT's concrete jungle...

colonel mustard ·

you may well have seen a bug like mine at UQ up at cromwell college, infront of the principles residence (a mate lives there) as well as a pink bug (75L) up there. I'm studying Youth work with a organisation called Scripture Union...currently located at eagle farm, but moving next week to the valley. What are you studying at QUT?

colonel mustard ·

So, this is now my official "my car" thread. The list has changed slightly as I have learnt a fair bit from the forum thus far!!!

The steering wheel is still not installed, as I have tried, and failed. A mate is going to help me with that one is a few weeks 🙂

got new front brakes going to happen in a few weeks (hopefully pick up the parts at action day...) Getting new calipers and Rotors from John Sherman (http://www.volksconversions.com.au/) and other brake parts from Classicveedub.com.au.

Worked out that kadrons from Rod Penrose are my best option, that will be organised after the brakes are installed.

Clutch and exhaust still haven't gone in (kadrons will go in at the same time, and maybe an 050 disi with pertonix coil and electonic ignition), only because of my rear end damage which will need to be fixed before all that other stuff comes in. Yeah, more money for parts and labour. Will need to get new gearbox mounts, fender beading, taillight seals, engine seal etc etc. list goes on.

thanks for listening to my rants 🙂

DaveCarter ·

Looks like its going good. Hopefully see it at Warwick 😁

colonel mustard ·

Not likely... haha.

Plans for the weekend not confirmed for myself yet, But will most likely be the "pit crew" for Trevor Luckhurst (1970 beetle, running 1915cc w/webbers), and potentially Mark Bretherton (1970 beetle running 1776 with twin kadrons). Two tow cars, two car trailers, two race cars..... I'll be driving the accomadation/tool wagon. hahaha. Possibly a 76 bay camper, or maybe even a 69 beetle (1915cc w/webbers) for town driving.... we shall see. Are you making the trip Dave? by yourself?

DaveCarter ·

Yeah im coming up with my dad. Hopefully going to have a 1776 with twin webbers in it by then 😁 Came up last year and thought it was awesome. I got to run on my Ls last year LOL

colonel mustard ·

Nice man. I'd love to go for a run down the track.... we shall see. 🙂 its a good fun weekend from what i hear. I only came on the sunday last year, and drove my mums commodore up... the aircon was cool, but aircooled is more fun! 🙂 I'll try and catch up with heaps of forum members while I'm there, and try and take a HEAPPPP of photos. 🙂

DaveCarter ·

Yeah it is so much crusier if you camp there. Sleeping next to the track, waking up to the sound of someone tuning their Volksie. Great times. I probs won't run this year because it was fun and everything last year but i saw nothing. I was in the pits behind the 20b kombi when he did that massive wheelie that is up on youtube and that is pretty much all i saw...... although i probs would have driven 10 hours just to see that

76bug ·

someone asked u to crew for them??🤪

colonel mustard ·

Yes 76bug, 2 People infact. I'm booked out this year, Sorry. I will be busy all weekend, - If you see a guy working in a Mazda Australia mechanics uniform, come have a chat 🙂

t_tuffnut ·

Wow, sounds like you have some great mods in mind. I'm a noob to all of this, but how hard was the engine swap? Was there a lot of mucking around or did it just bolt straight in?

Are you going to put a VW sticker on top of the ferrari one on the wheel? Probably be good for another 10hp or so!

Also wondering, where did you get the chrome fuel filter? I've got a rubbish one in my 67 at the moment and am looking for better filtration.

colonel mustard ·

Hey dude! I actually have not done an engine swap or anything that crazy yet. I'm told its not too hard with the right tools, but I won't be doing that in a while.

I'm also told, that the steering wheel that i got my hands on is quite rare, so i don't really want to modify it, and don't see that i will need to.

The chrome fuel filter was from classicveedub.com.au - but I will be losing it from the system in a few weeks... Not going to run one in the engine compartment any more, and just going to get an efi filter... they are better quality, and i will just have the one filter under the tank, thats all it really needs. 🙂

colonel mustard ·

doing brake pads and rear adjust this arvo.. maybe getting the steering wheel on too.

Picked up a stinger (for my new exhaust thats not yet on the car - thunderbird )from rohan @ action day $20 🙂 will post pics soon.

Have organised new carbies, not kadrons. picking them up at warwick. its a surprise, and its secret for now.

I graduate my course at the end of november, so things will be slow untill then. 🙁 but have plans for 2010 for colonel 🙂

colonel mustard ·

Well, change of plans for the brakes, its now going to be tomorrow arvo. dont you hate that when you get put back, its annoying, but its free so i cant complain.

Picked up some parts from 'pudgy' tonight. thanks dude!! rear drums! sweeeet! 🙂 (photos in the next few days.)

as promised, photos of the stinger.

room = messy as... 🙁

Scarab ·

great work mate.....I have finally moved from Type 3 threads to explore other peoples projects.....beetles and buses

that stinger looks awesome!! should be just the thing for Warwick ❗❗

as for the photo of your room....it could have been a photo of MY room!!!! Music theory books on the floor, acoustic hard case, a good pile of VW inspiration under the bedside table, and by the look of it, some food for the soul too 😉 all things you will find next to my bed!!.....minus the beetle exhaust and stinger 😀 (the wife wouldn't let me have something like that next to the bed!! 😂😂

Hope your plans work out with the trip to Warwick, all the best mate!

colonel mustard ·

keep looking through the threads, there is heaps of awesome stuff. 🙂

the stinger is pretty awesome for $20 (thanks Rohan!) sadly wont be going on colonel till the rear end damage is fixed. But stay tuned to this thread for future plans, a fair bit will be revealed post warwick (and by that, i mean post 23rd october when all my assessment is handed in), but as soon as i get a full time job next year, it will start looking, feeling and driving like a super should... (low and quick.. 🙂 ) - all the decent parts live nder the bed... all the stuff that needs to be cleaned up lives in the garage....

there are 3 guitars residing in my room, a cort jade 6, Ibanez JFS in blue, its a thin, hollow body jazz guitar. and the best of all.... A JS100 with dimarzio pickups, shaller tuners, and a whole bunch of other custom stuff... lots of white assessories, and best of all, Joe's signature on the back of the headstock. i have photos of me and him, from when i met him at the last G3, backstage. yep. amazing.

all the books and food 🙂 are needed for the youthwork course I'm doing with Scripture union. its called YMIS (youth ministry internship scheme) - and thats not even half of them. I'v been given more books this year than the rest of my life. one day i will finish reading them all. maybe

trip to warwick for me is now with mick58. 🙂 should be an awesome weekend. many photos will be taken. 🙂

Thanks for the support 🙂

Scarab ·

so the colonel wont be makng it to Warwick?......thats a shame, but there is always next year!! 😂 Im sure it will be a great trip with Mick058 (that is one NICE bug!!!)

sounds like you have some major plans that you are keeping close to your chest.....can't wait to hear your ideas after Warwick

you must be quite a guitarist with instruments like that at your disposal....are you in a band or anything??

well done on the youthwork course mate, there are certainly a lot of young people out there that have no direction and no hope, good on you for wanting to help in that field!

can't wait to see the photos of Warwick....I will have to make the trip up there one day.....South Australia seems to be so far away from things some times!! 😬

Keep up the good work mate

all the best Scarab (aka:Paul)

colonel mustard ·

Update..... Warwick was awesome... and i picked up a few parts, so updates to come...

Picked up late, metal rear valance - $45 from Kombi Saint / Alec. Thanks 🙂

[/img]

and since its in the same photo, I got some adjustable front struts from Joel. THANKS JOEL 🙂

Also, some discs and calipers from Joel 🙂

and rear brake shoes and cylinders from dave (STIDUB) 🙂

More updates real soon 🙂

alien8 ·

Nice to see those three bolters going into your L bug mate👍
How low you going to go?

colonel mustard ·

just hoping to fill the gap at the front (3 inches?), and rear - running standard wheels and tires, untill the budget allows me to go a bit lower. thinking the veeforce spyder wheels with Federal RS tires... mid next year. 🙂

Scarab ·

sounds good mate.....keep plugging away at it and your ideas WILL take shape before your eyes!! 😁

colonel mustard ·

Thanks Paul 🙂

Amazingly, I still haven't got the momo steering wheel on yet.... it will be on soon, as well as this.....
thanks again to kombi saint 🙂

I still have a set of new guards lined up with dave (stidub) that i have to get cash for, then its just little bits and pieces for the body work etc.

as for brakes, i need a new MC, hoses, seals, and bearings and some machining.

I secured some new carbs (thanks to steve carter 🙂 ), but im just going to use one, so need a manifold and linkage stuff for it... 🙂 should go well with the new exhaust, once the body work is done... good fun.

ryana89 ·

Hehehee that tacho is just a tad optopmistic😂😂 (11000rpm) lol. Btw $20 for that stinger... how is that possible?
Anyway your cars sounds like its going to be awesome, keep us all posted😀

colonel mustard ·

$20 is possible due to the rust and Rohan doing me a good cash deal. 11k is optimistic indeed.. 6k ... Maybe. 🙂 it's going together slowly...

DaveCarter ·

Should be able to get 6. I was revving mine to six at warwick and it is a mild cam with the timing hugely retarded to the problems we have had with pinging

colonel mustard ·

Well, for what i swapped it for, it was a fair deal.. and good oppourtunity.

Dave, i don't think the ol' 1600 will like being revved that hard...

DaveCarter ·

she will do it. My stocker did like 5200 and that was just stock with extractors

izac ·

wow. not good for the enigine i bet 😏

colonel mustard ·

yeah.... not really good for it...... but one day i want to be stupid and put massive jets on a 1600 and see if i can blow it up........ haha.

bajachris88 ·

You got a C/W crank dave? or factory bottom end?

DaveCarter ·

on the 1904 it is a counterweighted 74 stroker. The 1600 was completely stock

colonel mustard ·

Hey Dave, you have msn? Add me if you do. (ness_and_pat_in_mexico@hotmail.com) or add me on facebook... even though i won't be on FB for ages.

izac ·

tuned my carbs up today and it easily revved up to 4500rpm but didn't want to push it past that. I'm sure it would do 5200 if i wanted it to but dont really wanna warp the crankshaft 😂 🤓

colonel mustard ·

why this isn't in members rides.... I'm not sure.

got some new photos 🙂

As it is now

Single DNCF 40mm - Ramflow air cleaner.

The new exhaust.

New rear valance

then new (second hand....) front struts.

At this point, in the next few weeks the brakes will get done... then i will concider what to do after that.

🙂 just need seals and hoses for the brakes... and then if im really unlucky, a new M/C.

colonel mustard ·

oh, incase anyone was gonig to ask, the twin manifolds and linkage have gone to a new home. > there will be a single manifold, end ports and the other DCNF for sale soon.. 🙂 - or pm me if you are keen keen keen!

DaveCarter ·

I like your single carb manifold. Looks good

colonel mustard ·

Its a bit rusty, and the heat risers are gone, but i dont need them here.. it rarely gets cold enough.

the single is a good upgrade for the 1600.. and has worked out a crazy load cheaper than kadrons.

I am trying to get out of this setup for a little as possible, because its only going to be like that for 12 months. But from what I have discussed with Joel, it will be heaps heappppppppppps better than what im running now 🙂

AND.

Made these today/ my first videos. be nice!

colonel mustard ·

This is just a mess around edit of a post, probs best not to pay any attention to it......... unless you care about my dreaming... haha/

Suspension:

front - tapered springs to run 6inch wheels (below - vfroce spiders). rebuild for all front end components [ tie rods/ends, ball joints, bushes ]. new swaybar for lowered front end. flip kit to avoid tie rods hitting body.

Sherman strut brace.

Text

Rear- urethane bushes. swaybar. Squareback torsion bars

Wheels. - Vforce spiders

What they will, kinda look like (thanks for inspiration Barry)

Tires.

15x6??

Brakes.

Front- type 3 calipers (twin pin, single bleeder), Sherman slotted discs

Rear- Type 3 drums.

ctefeh ·

Colonel,
Just pay regular attention to the foam filter in that Ramflo. It breaks down if too old and will get sucked into the carb or engine.

Enjoy
Ctefeh

colonel mustard ·

Cheers mate!

I will most likely invest in something with a flat top to avoid water coming in, once i have a bit more cash. I think they are about $40 each from micks. might even find them cheaper on ebay...

this is the style I would like

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=330369177605

DaveCarter ·

nice videos dude. good to see the colonel. i have been meaning to do a walk around of mine for a while now. looks like i need to pull my finger out lol

colonel mustard ·

yeah, it was good weather and had a few minutes. 🙂 thats the first time most people will hear the scaryness of that sound. hopefully, it will change in a few weeks
🙂

DaveCarter ·

i like it lol

colonel mustard ·

haha. well.... you can have it. haha. its pretty much stuffed. when i got hit, it bent one of the tubes.
the thunderbird is what i should have purchased originally. i guess i just wanted to be different from my mate. silly choice since i only had a 1600.

DaveCarter ·

Fair enough. Can't wait to see it done. So when are you planning on throwing it all together?

colonel mustard ·

once i can get a bit more cash together. just managing to pay the bills at the moment. i finish all the assessment for my course this week, so i will be able to pick up a bit more work after that.

the brakes hopefully in the next 2 weeks. (then if they dont get better, its another $200 for a M/C)

then body work 🙁 - $1500 is the guess.

I've never pulled an engine from a vw before, but im thinking about doing it myself. I know i can do the exhaust and intake myself. just need a hand with clutch alignment (my mate is a mech and has tools i can use) Its also having another car that i can use while mine is out of action for a week or so. the last parts i need are...

Brake seals
flexable brake lines
Master cylinder (maybe)
Spark Plug leads
Spark plugs
Blue Fuel hose
Intake gaskets
Intake boots/clamps
Copper Exhaust nuts
Breather hose
Breather vents
Gearbox mounts (urethane)

That should get me stopping, intake, exhaust, clutch and oil breathing done..... Hopefully by new year

then mid-mount for the gearbox, and strutbrace(early next year...). then front end lowering. and after that is wheels/tyres (probably 6 months away).

The biggest choice i have to make is, do the body work or just bodgy it up with a large hammer. - that would save me $1500 that i just dont have.... its a fun game.

DaveCarter ·

Aren't the police covering the damage?

colonel mustard ·

uh yeah... already spent that. Paid for my course, which was just a bit more important.

its not a huge job given that with a few hundred $$'s more in parts, it would just be labour... i just dont have the money for it, and i cant find anyone that is reconmended for VW's locally.

It doesnt need to look pretty, but it needs to be straight.

next one the to buy list is gaurds and bumpers/brackets. trying to avoid non german stuff. (but planning on doing the bumpers and light surrrounds in matt black..... 🙂 - but still keeping the rest of the body rat style.)

DaveCarter ·

ah fair enough. LOL at least you got them to pay.

colonel mustard ·

$2500. 🙂

DaveCarter ·

oh well done 😀

colonel mustard ·

i have photos of what it looked like when i got hit. i'll show you one day. you may cry

colonel mustard ·

DaveCarter ·

Ouch dude. Thats the one bad thing about bugs. Rear enders, the one crash that usually isnt your fault, can be the most expensive. You do the engine and the rear body work and it is big $$ to repair. At least it wasn't to much body damage. All repairable. Would have been spewin though

ryana89 ·

Sorry if you've already mentioned, but was that a towbar that did that damage to the bumper/rear?🙅

Ryan😀

colonel mustard ·

VE SS commodore. But they reinforce the front of all popo cars, apparently.

izac ·

dude stop making video's and hurry up and put that carb on!!! 😉

in regards to the air cleaner, its a shame you can;t run the ramflo as they do seem to flow a lot better than the flat top ones... maybe not for the tall ones with more stand off though...

colonel mustard ·

$$$'s my friend... not much to go for the carb, just intake gaskets and boots/clamps and a linkage.

but i have to save the $$$$'s for the body work ($1500 apparently)

but i want to do the clutch at the same time... it will all be done in the space of a few weeks.... but i need to save and buy parts first. its lame.

colonel mustard ·

Update.... Kinda.

I'm going to be taking a break from AVD, however I still need some info on carbie linkages, for the dcnf. help is appreciated. cya round crazy town.

DaveCarter ·

haha i dont believe it

bajachris88 ·

colonel mustard wrote:the brakes hopefully in the next 2 weeks. (then if they dont get better, its another $200 for a M/C)
Buy overseas man... $200 is rediculous! As a fellow uni student you can so stretch that elsewhere!

And clutch alighnment... i got hte tool. i used it.. and won't use it again till the next clutch disk in like 5 yrs to come. Feel free to borrow. Takes a second to stick in and sort out.

Its easy... its a plastic shaft thats a 'fake' gearbox input shaft.... puts the gear teeth of the clutch disk in alignment with the gland nut... so when you fit the engine back to the gearbox the input shaft goes all the way in easily with no complications...

then you just torque up the pressure plate on top. VOLLA!

You want me to come around on the holidays or sumfin? Extra set of hands for ya. 👍

bajachris88 ·

colonel mustard wrote:i have photos of what it looked like when i got hit. i'll show you one day. you may cry
On the bright side its an opportunity to fit that removable apron!

(if i remember right you scored one already cut off?)

The pros would luv ya for the panel... make it the deal that they make it removable and same colour.

colonel mustard ·

Thanks for the advice/offer Chris. I appreciate it.

Well, last night I snapped The handbrake cable in colonel (RHS..) and the drivers door is filling up with water, because the window seals are stuffed. Im concidering just putting him away in the garage for a couple of months, becuase I just can't afford to do anymore with the very very little cash that I'm trying to live on. On the plus side, all my assessment finishes this week (then the course is over!) and I will be looking for full time work, (it will be tough to find a place that will let me have as much time off as i am wanting - youth camps, nats trip in may, large christmas break next year, etc) so the fun begins. AS i just mentioned, I would really like to have colonel going strong (brakes, lowered, bodywork sorted) before I make the 2000km drive to sydney and back, so its going to take a fair bit to get it to that stage - hence why I'm going to keep him in the garage for a while, and not do a dodgy Job. But I will be asking for help outs early next year, as i want to do most of the stuff here at home, and not have to fork out for a workshop to do everything. Colonel will never run if my hands don't get dirty.

bajachris88 ·

Don't worry mate, we will get it sorted.

Buy a cheap bulk buy of sausages and you could have a bbq to draw a massive vw crowd working on the car for a day.

would be able to have a full pit crew with all they guys you get along here.

colonel mustard ·

I did think about this the other day, And I think I willl do one, I just neeed to get a few $$'s together for alll the parts I need. I figure with 3-4 people, i could get the brakes sorted and the car lowered, in a day. its just going to cost $300-500 in parts. Fun.

colonel mustard ·

Ah........ ouch.

bajachris88 ·

haha, xmas all over!
before you submit, email to mick motors..., copy that picture into an email message and ask if they can compete with that price.

he replied back quickly to me, and i saved $200 off the total cost when i spend half a g's worth just a month ago. [Primarily cause he matches prices, and eliminated shipping]
He matched like 85% of the prices, and had 99% of all of it in stock.

No kidding though, it would be a wise move. and no waiting time for ya!
👍

colonel mustard ·

Well, I'll be spending a bit more than that in one go.... Fair way off though, sadly.

He is in the Garage now... have to brush the cogwebs off the bike tommorrow.

colonel mustard ·

updated.

+ rear hub seals
+ front wheel bearing/seals
+ master cylinder
+ machining & paint

Yay!

t_tuffnut ·

What site is that list from? The only online shop I have found is Classic Vee Dubs.

colonel mustard ·

that list is from cip1.com (american site) classicveedub is the best aus online site, however, there are many others. Vfoce, vintage, rod penrose, peter richards, and micks are also good. 🙂

t_tuffnut ·

Thanks Colonel, they are great. More ways to get rid of this burdensome income of mine!

colonel mustard ·

If you have any to share......

haha. my car isnt going anywhere.. need to get me more hours at work to get it back on the road.

colonel mustard ·

noooooooooooo

ryana89 ·

I hope thats the handbrake cable that you snapped and not a new replacement one. I've seen a car that looks just like yours (mustard L bug) 2 days in a row now, ill have to take a few pics

Cheers

Ryan

colonel mustard ·

where abouts have you seen it?

colonel mustard ·

and yes, thats the old cable..

ryana89 ·

Up here in Hervey Bay (near a place called centro). Doesn't come off as nice as yours, but its a pretty bug non the less

colonel mustard ·

colonel mustard ·

colonel mustard ·

bug selecta and paint.... good times

Joel ·

if that mustard was red id swear we have a copycat on our hands 😂

colonel mustard ·

Airklewd super?? - kinda where a fair bit of the inspiriation came from.

The steel wheels are just he intermediate option... bit of black paint and some emery cloth. good stuff 🙂

colonel mustard ·

dark green..... probs not.

colonel mustard ·

So..... My super has finally been deemed (by a few local super/beetle drivers) unsafe to drive.

Issues that need to be solved before it can be driven -

1. Handbrake cable is broken
2. rear drums are at highest adjustment
3. there is next to no brake pedal
4. front discs squeal
5. front shocks are stuffed (can make them go to the bumpstops...)
6. steering wheel rubs
7 front wheels hit struts (potentially type 3 wheels on there...)

and thats just the brakes & suspension.

its also now having trouble going into gear right because the gearbox mounts are shot..... so its becoming goooood fun.

Basically, if you have any parts you would like to donate, or have time to lend, i would really appreciate it. Student budgets are hard... especailly when there are camps etc that you have to pay to be a volunteer on..... car always comes second.
Currently im searching for more work, trying to save and get all the bits and pieces i need, then get the brakes working and the bar lowered over a long weekend early in the year.

STIDUB ·

mustard, thatg should read, front inserts - for space filling purposes only,
oh had a thought when i was 2 streets away, check the lines going from your res down to the master, they could be kinked/blocked & not giving the master any fluid, or if you have pliers & a glass bottle somewhere you could pop them off the master to see if its blocked that way.
shoulda thought of that while i was there😂

hellbugged ·

🥲........driving a VW is not a cheap form of transport unfortunately

Craig Torrens ·

probably best to sell your car out as parts and find another.......

hellbugged ·

🙁 but true

MISS VDUB ·

The boys are right... if you can't afford to get this car on the road in the first place the ongoing costs will kill you in the end. No point having wine taste on a beer budget, it will kill you in the end. Sound like too much for you to afford right now. Better off getting something more sensible that you can afford with low running cost and low maintenance... oooh maybe a Hyundai?

Now you can understand why we not only have 2 Splitscreen kombi but also another daily driver. We do more than 100km each day too and from work up and down a mountain. It's not fair to make a VW do this, and the up keep is huge i willl tell you that. The excel uses very little fuel and it's never had a thing wrong with it, we service it ourselves. Sure, there are plenty of other cars i would prefer, but you have what you can afford. There is a point where you stop being vain, and start using your brain.

colonel mustard ·

well, given that most people think hyundi's are worth something, id not get one for what i could part this car out for.
Also, this is one of the most rust free original supers (or any bug reallly) that i have seen, and parting it out would be a waste.

the main cruncher is that, even if i get another car (like a laser or something) for $1500... + insurance and rego etc thats still over $2000, and thats counting on that car being is amazing condition. Sorry, But thats stupid.

comfortably if it was spent wisely (not on shiny stuff) & installed at home, perhaps even including lunch for the volunteers 👍

Sides ·

What is it with you and lunch Dave ???

Should get you a banner ad... "STIDUB - welder/fabricator/scooby nut. Will work for food. 0055 WELD ME"

😂

Col Mustard - group stuff into what NEEDS to be done to be drivable safely and do that first, then do the other stuff as $$$ lets you.

Just checked your list...you've doubled up on a lot of things - like 2 sets of Urethane knobby bushes, 2 pair pivot bushes, 2 pair rear bump stops, 8 brake line clips... you only need 1 pair of each of them to do a car (and you probably don't need the brake line clips at all). Plus ditch the bump steer kit and center caps (falsl into shiny stuff category to me)...saved you over $100 already. Also give Mick's a try... I'd suspect they're cheaper on most of those things.

Never heard of anyone needing to replace all four tie-rod ends at the same time - are all of 'em really shot ???

colonel mustard ·

too of the tie rods have busted boots, and i have no idea how long they have been like that..... I must say though, there is some serious sounds coming from the front. I will eng up gettting all the stuff from micks, it just easier to talk to some one face to face & see what your getting, rather than getting a box that has doubles or the wrong stuff...

thanks for the tips sides 🙂

STIDUB ·

Dave, Whats wrong with enjoying a nice lunch during a decent days work?
from looks every bit of his front end is original,(old & stuffed) other than steering dampner - it looks unusually out of place being shiny & clean

Joel ·

inner tie rod ends rarely wear out on supers

clunky noise would just be shotty ball joints and swaybar bushings
and possibly top strut mount bearings

colonel mustard ·

Sway bar isn't even on tightly... Hahaha. But, once all parts are purchased.. A BBQ and two days of work may be in order....

Sides ·

STIDUB wrote:Dave, Whats wrong with enjoying a nice lunch during a decent days work?
Heh - nothin mate. Today I dug out that IDF manifold that needs welding... what do you like on your sandwiches ???

😉

Col Mustard - post up when you've got the bits and I'm sure there'll be people to help turn the spanners.

👍

So you've put up all of those nice pictures of the sparkly new stuff that you didn't quite need, but neglected to spend the money on the things you actually need to, to keep your car safe and drivable? And now you want people to throw in some cheapies to you? Maybe sell off the stuff you bought that you don't need, and put the fund back into making your car roadworthy. Sometimes in excitement our wants sometimes overtake our needs. A hard lesson to learn, but best learn it young.

alien8 ·

Count on adding 40% more $'s for parts than you have to now. Once you start pulling stuff apart all the little bits and pieces add up.
I agree that maybe putting it into storage for a while until you are more financial is a good idea. Take the bus, train or buy a cheap scooter.

colonel mustard ·

squizy wrote:So you've put up all of those nice pictures of the sparkly new stuff that you didn't quite need, but neglected to spend the money on the things you actually need to, to keep your car safe and drivable? Well, thats one lesson learnt. Another is don't be a full time student and expect sympathy from people... Sadly, I got the rough end of the stick having to pay for a course (no hex and no youth allowance) that cost more in a month than i could earn - resulting in my car not feeling too great.
Iv also learnt not to trust all mechanics... because they either tell you its fine or dont worry about it..... as much as i know my MC is stuffed - causing my issues, noone appart from STIDUB has agreed with me.

Sorry to put a downer on people, but no i dont expect people to go out of their way to bail me out, but im sure there are enough people on here with stuff lying around that they will never use, that could help me out enough to drive my car again. But as I have always expected, alot of people in the vw community are nice, but dont really care about the younger generation. hence, why vws will die out faster..

It's all good though. I do appreciate many peoples help though, in particular Joel, Dave (stidub), steve carter etc. thanks 🙂

alien8 ·

Chin up mate. all that study will pay off. You will have plenty of play $'s for the dub. But for now just be patient. Your dub needs some lovin, one part at a time. I think I might have a set of oem control arm bushes you can have. The press in type. If ya want em that is.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

If i was closer i would help, and if i had spare parts you could use they would be yours. Im sure that you would do the same for others if they asked. Keep going, get the car drivable and then get it all done piece by piece.

Mick058 ·

Colonel, im not sure what your schedule is like with study but i think your just going to have to suck it up a little and get yourself a shift job. I'd pretty pretty sure one of the fast food retailers would hire you. Maccas is always looking for people. Any old car needs a little attention. My experience with my 69 bug was that it was reliable and kept going. Fix the issues you have and you should be somewhat right - once you get through them

Go to Maccas, apply for a job and earn a little dosh. Doesn't matter if you hate it, its work! IF you find a better job while working at Maccas, good, move on - but at least your earn some while you look.

all the best!

71dub ·

i agree with mick058. a least working at maccas will give some income while you are looking for something better and will get the dollars coming in .to get you under way for purchasing the parts you need .all be it a little bit at a time

MISS VDUB ·

You need to realise that the people on here aren't bagging you out but trying to give you REALLY good advice.

Experience teaches you some really good things, people have been in your shoes, you just learn what priorities are. Guess what, i drive a Hyundai as a thrash about because it's cheap. I have my toys for the weekend although the ute is a daily also, but i've gotten those things through alot of hard work not by asking for help from others with my cars.

I'm still studying too, i do it externally around working a full time job. This means i sacrifice weekends to get it done. It's not fun, but it will be worth it in the long run. I also have a killer mortgage, so sacrifice alot of things that i would love to do or have. Same thing with your car, it will happen in the long run with alot of hard work. You just need to work out what is important right now... buy a cheap run about while you study work and save. Good things come to those who wait.

There will be plenty of time to have the things you want. I've learnt this.... Don't have wine taste on a beer budget.

colonel mustard ·

I'm not trying to be rude, but sometimes someones good advice isn't always good for everyone.

hmmm. why even bother.

Stanley ·

colonel mustard wrote:But as I have always expected, alot of people in the vw community are nice, but dont really care about the younger generation. hence, why vws will die out faster..
We are nice but in my oppinion that's a bold statement but probably comes from frustration.

We've all been there.

MISS VDUB ·

Yeah totally disagree with that statement too Stanley. VW's will never die out because those who have a pure passion for them will get them regardless of how hard they have to work or wait to have one. Some peopel have to wait all there life to get that dream car they've always wanted.

I'm not an "Old Fart", and have had nothing but help and good advice from those with VW and life experience. The truth can be hard to swallow sometimes but i would never say that the more "experienced" vdubbers out there don't give a shit, they're just realistic in life's expectations.

Well said..............its all about priorities.

Scarab ·

sorry to hear of your frustration Jason, I do truly feel for you!....it is sometimes very hard to be passionate about something, but then not have the funds to feed that passion the way you would ideally like to. I really admire the passion you have for all things VW!

please don't take peoples suggestions as 'knocks' or 'digs' at you or your situation.....after reading through the comments listed above, there is some real wisdom being put out there for you, if you are willing to grab a hold of it and run with it.

I don't think I would be wrong in saying that 99% of the people on here have been in similar situations as yourself at the moment....I know I definitely have been, and I still seem to go through the financially lean times quite regularly! Unfortunately it is often hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel sometimes.....but keep chugging away and the light will definitely appear.....eventually. (maybe that light is the glow of the Golden Maccas arches as per Mick's suggestion 😂)

That being said, I am sad that I am in no way able to assist you with working on your car as I am so far away, or even with donations of parts etc. as I have nothing here to suit a beetle, but hang in there bro, you WILL get there!! While you might feel that no-one is willing to help etc. I don't think it is the willingness of people that is a problem, it is often the distance or the time involved that stops people lending a hand when we all have such busy lives these days. At least you have a core of people on here to give you suggestions of ways that you might be able to get your bug back on track. I know it is little consolation, but it is something to keep in mind none the less mate 🙂

Hope you get on OK mate, and feel free to contact me anytime, happy to chat anytime bro....PM me if you like 👍

All the best

Scarab (aka: Paul)

colonel mustard ·

Thanks Paul.

Not that I really need to explain this, but I thought I would.

I currently have two jobs, however due to my age I recieve VERY limited hours. I could get a full time position, but then I am unable to have time off to volunteer for things like Red Frogs and Camps (SU Qld..), which makes things hard - And I do feel my priorities are right, I pay to volunteer for things like camps and stuff. My car does come second and is not the center of my life. its a passion, and my car to get around in (because its cool!)
It will get fixed eventually.. but for now is under covers in the garage.

Scarab ·

good on ya mate, and well done for trying to put back into the community too with your volunteering!

thanks for explaining further, it puts things into perspective knowing that you are already working two jobs AND doing volunteer work....it is suprising that you still have time for a hobby like your bug.

well done mate, keep up the good work.....you will get there in the end!

76bug ·

hi mustard

you have stated many times that you dont have the money for the parts at this stage for your bug thats fair enough i can understand that. this is just a suggestion, while you have the car parked under cover why dont you jack the front end up on stands pull the whole front end out inspect every part and clean it and write down what you need, get under the car with some rags and a tin of petrol and get it looking clean. at least you can learn how it all goes together and you will be ready for when you buy the parts. once that is done move onto another part of the car.

colonel mustard ·

Dear 76bug.

This is a very good suggestion, and I do plan to do this in the next few weeks, as well as clean up some surface rust, etc. 🙂 A very good suggestion indeed.

76bug ·

not a problem mustard i think you will learn a lot, why dont you post up a few pics of your progress it would be a good guide for yourself as well

colonel mustard ·

as it happens, i surely will. 🙂

Sides ·

Yeah - excellent idea - a clean car is always MUCH nicer to turn spanners on, though best you use degreaser or even kero rather than petrol (safety).

You may even be lucky and find not quite as much stuff needs immediate replacement as you thought (like those tie rod ends).

annosL ·

Good point Sides, when I stripped and cleaned my L bug I found some parts serviceable and so were put back, being a pensioner my budget is limited, just takes a bit longer, safety first and do the best with the resources you have. I have learnt heaps and for a do-it-yourselfer doing up a VW beetle the resources on this forum and the net in general are enormous, there is nothing you can't get information about, a lot more than any other car! good luck with it Colonel Mustard! always good to read your posts👍

colonel mustard ·

rear first. Gotta get some jack stands, and take a trip to micks. 🙂 Sold A DCNF so i got a lil' bit of casho together. 🙂

Scarab ·

well done mate!......slowly BUT surely! it will be back on the road in no time!!

colonel mustard ·

Thanks Paul, You are an absolute champ 🙂

I had work today, and when got home, I got started on some bits and pieces.

Painted the drums and rotors and one backing plate. they need a bit of work still - more paint, machine discs, emery cloth the drums and put the hubs back together.

will alll look different tomorrow when its dry, and when iv done the insides. paint first, the i wont get paint on the freshly machined surfaces 🙂

Scarab ·

good on ya mate....keep going with it....small steps are what it takes to complete the journey

colonel mustard ·

Doing more painting currently, good sun today! Might actually dry properly. the matt black on the tail light surrounds had to be redone, im re-sanding them now.

Joel, there was white under that light blue, and dark blue under the white...... fun. lots of 360 grade paper going into those this morning. Camera battery is currently dead, get some pics up late tonight.

Joel ·

sonic has been painted about 5 different colours
factory colour was honey brown lol

colonel mustard ·

I saw very little of brown... Lots of blue though. The sun is awesome to dry stuff with today🙂

t_tuffnut ·

I thought I'd have a crack at a picture of my bug in the style of your signature. A few minutes in photoshop later and this is the result. As you can see, I've got some paintin to do as well.

Keep up the posts.

STIDUB ·

found my old handbrake cables, if you want em msg me, ill be passing by your place tonight, no promises they wont break just the same though

colonel mustard ·

I want them I want them I want them.... did you find any of those rear seals too??... i just need to get it back together....

colonel mustard ·

Thanks for the handbrake cables Dave.

STIDUB is a champ!!

colonel mustard ·

Took discs to be machined today. caused an argument between 2 mechanics about if my drums need machining.... good times. painting brake parts may work, but it still chips and stuff. glad it no show car.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Should get smoe pics of those tailights up

hellbugged ·

good stuff........start with the little things and essentials to keep your ride going safely and you will get there

colonel mustard ·

discs didnt get done, they were given back so they didnt get thrown out..... - long story. they will get done when i get back from schoolies. been given a bit of work this week, so I may take a trip to micks when i get back too.... and organise that lowering. fun times ahead. 🙂 thanks for a the kind words fella's.

colonel mustard ·

todays purchased - that this weeks pay have funded.

still need....... front brake hoses, backing plate plugs, split pins.

And all the front and rear suspension bushes

+ I need to paint the caps for the front rotors, machine the discs and pack bearings.

Also trying to chase up jack and jack stands from my mate - he needs to finish the "major service" on his jetski trailer in the next few weeks. Yay! watersports soon!

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Lookin good, ive already got plans for where my next three pays are going and most of it is into my car.

STIDUB ·

what size split pins?

colonel mustard ·

ah... the rear axle nut ones... are they a certain strength... or just grab them from M10?

colonel mustard ·

brasss exhaust nuts which iv been chasing for ages!!!!!!

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

lookin good, always gets motovation when new parts arive.

Scarab ·

woohoo.....progress!!!! cheering for you mate!

Paul

colonel mustard ·

Heading to micks this week to try and pick up a few more bits and pieces 🙂

colonel mustard ·

Went to micks yesterday and got some bits and pieces that i required. still have a long list - due to the fact that i want to lower the car at the same time as I fix up the brakes. this may not happen though as i really need to drive it for work ect. the next item on my list is the master cylinder. its one of those items that has a few people arguing over if it needs to be replaced or not. my theory is that if i do it alll at once, then its all done and i dont have to pull stufff apart again.

anyway, this is what i go from micks.

intake stuff

rear hoses

magnetic drain plug. 🙂

STIDUB ·

you have split pins next time i can stop by

colonel mustard ·

Yesterday.....

started cleaning the dcnf..

Some brake parts still to be painted..

rear shocks

THANKS JOEL!!!!!!!!

Scarab ·

some nice progress there mate...keep chipping away, step by step and it will be done before you know it!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

colonel mustard ·

Thanks Paul!

Not far to go with the braking, just need a new master cylinder, machine the discs, to paint a few bits and pieces, and then get it all together. then this and that. need to get a better job though.... not earning enough to get ahead. bit lame.

is it over 2 litre?? I recon it would be sweet as a 1916 with twin spark, dtm fan, 44 IDF's. nice setup. one day.

for now though, just painting up a few more bits. Going to do the calipers Red, after my next pay. still need to take a bit more off the drums with emery tape. and the discs are yet to be machined. &, I still need a new MC, but that looks like it will have to wait to after new year, when i hopefully get a full time position.

trickysimon ·

Its Beths 2.9 Vert isnt it?

trickysimon ·

Nvm. Answered my own question:
Pictured above is an example of what we are capable of with a Generation II MassIVe engine. This 2.9 lter engine features our proprietary twin spark plug arrangement and produces 249 HP and is installed into Beth Raby's 1979 VW Beetle Convertible!! As a full daily driver, this engine has achieved better than 30 MPG, even with monsterous 52mm IDA Weber carburetors!!!!

colonel mustard ·

you also answered my questions. haha. nice one 🙂

66deluxe ·

That pic is of the 2.9 but i went in it with a roller cammed 2270. 120ft.lb of torque at 1000 rpm is a nice experience.

colonel mustard ·

Some shots of the carb re-kitting.

Dirty(ish) carb

bare mainifold

All the gaskets

it was a clean surface on the manifold and i cleaned the carb base, it seemed level enough.

Top main gasket

has 32 vents

Enrichment jigger

accel pump

Top cork gasket (for air cleaner)

The finished item, with intake boots and clamps on the manifold.

Now i just need an air cleaner... 🙂

WINGS!

colonel mustard ·

well... i got most of my brake bits painted, just got calipers to go(tomorrow I hope. started putting the rears back together (trial fit). its a fun process, that will hopefully get easier in the new year when i try to get a full time job.

So, what can i replace it with....... And how come noone mentioned this.. ha

colonel mustard ·

The painted bits... rust is not my friend, so I'm preventing it!

Hadn't driven the car in 4 or 5 weeks.... and only had 9psi in the rears.

colonel mustard ·

front caps!

rear seal kits!

just re-using the same bearings.

disc grease seal

more rust prevention - if its out and can be painted, do it. in black, not yellow, green, and pink.....

have all the hoses I need, just need a M/C now

nearly ready to go together, just need discs machined.

not an issue they have a spring which returns them back soon as theres no pressure ie cable pulling on the lever
just leave it be, or even hook up a choke cable if u have cold start probs in winter

Now on the wishlist.

awwwwww... need a job!

ian.mezz ·

you need a brace on the base of that carby and manifold so every time that you gas it , it dont move.

yeah because if its not braced the two rubber boots on each side of the manifold will twist a bit and they will one day split.
the old vw one has the heat pipes that go on the exhaust pipe to hold it in place. them heat pipes are rusted off in that picture of yours.

STIDUB ·

add up the cost of decent inserts & the tapered coils, then compare the difference in $$ to V-force struts which do all that & more, yes more costly but no need to upgrade in future, adjustment is far more usable in reality compared to the topline gear looking at the legs you have & the height joel has on the upper limits, just a thought to ponder over....

what happened to the idea of stock springs with stock wheel/tyre?

colonel mustard ·

I want the vforce wheels. I wish I had the cash to buy that orange 1303 in melb, and then I'd be set. Sadly, that's not possible.

Will do a topline order once I get some full time work early in the new year.

thats a smart thing to do. we got our red vw cheap after a bloke spent $35000+ on the rebuilt.

DaveCarter ·

yeah it is definitely the way to go. People say you will never get the money back that you spend and it is true. You are better off going with an unfinished project or something that is already done like that orange one in adelaide.

colonel mustard ·

In reality, it would be smart to just scrap the famed colonel mustard 1303. But I'm far too attached to the car to let it go. I'm currently content to drive it around town when it's able and safe. My longer term goal is to get a daily car that has aircon, is better on fuel, etc (looking at golf's) that I can drive everyday, and long distances - as my work will eventually call for that. The next part of the plan, car wise is to get another 1303 or put some serious cash into restoring colonel. In a happy make believe Jason land, I'd like a daily (golf?), weekend fun driver, and a track car/registered. & car trailer.. Long term? Yes. Very. Between this I still have stuff for music to buy (guitars etc) and laptops/computers etc for work, camp organisation, youth group stuff). I'm also wanting to move out of home before the end of 2010. Yep - now you know my 5 year goals AVD.

In short I'm well attached to colonel, and I really like 1303's (why?? Becuase struts just feel right to drive, and curved screen feeels most modern. I'd love a late 50's model one day though).

So at the Moment, I'm just trying to get colonel the best I can on my budget. Full time job hunting now!

Btw. I really appreicate the advice from you chaps, Ian; Joel, Dave, steve Carter, Dave Carter. 🙂 thanks'!!!

Yesterday, I got my new handbrake cables in, new shoes and drums sorted. Brakes will need adjusting again soon, but they are a bit better, even though, once the fronts are sorted out, its going to be awesome in the brakes department.

At this stage, im also 99% sure I wont need a new M/C, but i will be prepared to do it if needed, its the last stage of the brake upgrade.

Scarab ·

Hey Colonel, just thought I'd catch up your progress, and it would seem you are well on your way mate, well done!!

All the best for the new year (I know its late, but haven't chatted lately 😂) and hoping you are able to get your 'famed colonel mustard' back on the road properly soon.

All the best mate,

I Care!!!!!!😵 This is probably my second most watched thread, second to Joel's Subi Bug

Joel ·

awww how sweet 😎

Scarab ·

Mate, please don't think that people don't care, with Ryana89, Joel and myself, thats at least 3 people who care!

I have found that there are a few 'VW snobs' on here....the ones that think that their opinions are the only ones that count and if you're not doing things the way they would or make a comment that they dont think you should....they end up cutting you down quick smart. (PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A VERY SMALL MINORITY OF POSTERS!!).

Generally, I think you will find that 99% people are genuinely interested, even if they dont make a comment on your thread. I know I check most threads on here, but dont really post on too many. I generally post on peoples threads that have bothered to comment on mine....selfish I know 😂

Anyway, take heart mate, knowing that there are definitely people who are interested in your build's progress and are hoping that you are back on the road ASAP enjoying that mustard bug!!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

I like reading to its preety much the only reason i look in the bugs section.

colonel mustard ·

Well thankyou for the support gents.

the missing stuff...

I ended up getting the calipers painted red. without taking ages to detail them, im happy with the result. I figue, by the time i get wheels where you can see the caliper, it will be time for a pad change and a repainting of the calipers.

about 2 weeks ago I got my new (well second hand) drums and New (thanks dave/stidub) shoes on, also have a handbrake again.

and then a few days later, I took a trip to the sunny coast. had very few issues, just started noticing front end noises (tie rods/balljoints) and the 70km/h shimmy. made it home fine, travelled about 300km's, max speed 120km/h. Know i know why some of the guys rave about kamei's - if they do what they say they do, I need one!

Here's some shots from the trip - (the shretchy strap was a "just in case" I had ALOT of stuff in there....) I was able to pack a 2 x 12 100watt amp behind the rear seat, 2 guitars on the rear seat, and 2 peoples luggage for a week long camp, alot of music books, stuff to repair the car and a passenger..... it was a full car!

Colonel next to some of the sound equipment for camp..... it was a loud concert... 🙂

At the giant BP on the way up.....

And a joke for the drift boys....

Also got my new disc's from john sherman.

new bearings arrived from classicveedub on wednesday.

Great work👍 And I must say, the Colonel is a very pretty car! Straight to the desktop background😂

Joel ·

colonel mustard ·

calipers, Joel? And the struts (which will be soon, as all my tie rods are shot, so front end rebuild sooooooon) Got any more fun stuff? :P I do apprcieate the help man 🙂

This is kind of like my new year's eve camping trip.

Chilling out by the river.

Enough music for a campsite with 4 people?

Site was powered up via diesel, 20A at 240V 3-phase. We ran three to four 1500W spotlights as well as the sounds, just to put a decent load on the generator as it was still being run in!

colonel mustard ·

haha. looks like more than enough for 4 people...

ours was enough for 400+ people.... 🙂 good times

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Im going camping sometime soon with the missu and i dont go camping without a tv and all those things so im gunna have a packed car too,, i like driving it when its full, makes it look lower.

As for the parts joel tits good to have someone who has done everything im waning to do.

now that really is a shocking typo josh 😂

colonel mustard ·

Josh, wash your mouth out with soap, and your hands with some sort of acid....

colonel mustard ·

The new valance - will need to be painted

This is my new exhaust, which cannot go in due to the current damage to the valance. - this may need to be done at the same time/ or the current one just removed and the car transported to and from on a trailer.

this is what the initial damage was....

it no longer looks that bad, but i will be replacing the gaurds and bumper + brakets - & engine lid.

this is what it currently looks like.... kinda (not the best camera)

Ollie ·

Keep us posted Mustard - I shall be checking everynight at around 1 to 2 am...

You know I mean it

colonel mustard ·

I guess you do mean it but I don't know why?? I'm just trying to get my rear valance fixed. and do some other bits and pieces. its all fun. Took a trip to dave's (Stidub) house this arvo and checked out the progress on his car, and picked up some stuff to get my car moving along. 🙂

Scarab ·

Great work mate, I am another one who checks in regularly on your progress mate. Glad to hear its moving along nicely....wont be long and you'll be going for a 😵‍💫😂

Scarab (aka: Paul)

ian.mezz ·

gOOD tO sEE THat you are getting that over due Maintenance doNE🤪🤪

Scarab ·

HEY!!!!! Ive been checking in here regularly and you know what.....Over a week and no updates!!!!???? Whats going on????? 😂😂

Hope all is well for you mate!!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

colonel mustard ·

Hey Paul!

I've just spent the day (about 6 hours) putting a jetski back together with my mate (its kinda his.....) he decided to pull it all apart himself because he had no end of trouble with cruddy marine mechanics - and being a qaulified auto mech, he thought he would give it a go. In my book I'm now a jetski mechanic, and so is he.... and thats my week pretty much.
I have been driving colonel, just locally, and it's going ok, (good temps for driving at night currently..) but the suspension needs attention sooon. rear shocks seem to be getting super noisy, and lots of knocks too. not so great, but had a little more work this week, so might get some cash soon - (and darn stidub now has me searching for some special rear shocks... adjustable...) Still seaching for a full time job, but big citys are lame, and jobs are hard to come by. thinking about applying for a position in a high school with SU qld... but not so sure what to do currently.

hopefully some updates in a few weeks.

Scarab ·

Mate, well donr on your new jetski mechanic qualification!! 😂 Its all good as long as your mate lets you take the ski out every now and again!!

As for your knocks and rattles....turn the radio up until you can afford to get them sorted out!!

All the best for your job search mate, and will be looking forward to updates!

Paul

ryana89 ·

G'day, I've been waiting on some updates too, but I can see you've been busy with jet skis and what not. Just a side note, what brand was the jet ski and was it 4 or 2 stroke? They're amazing things, as I recall going into our friends local auto/marine work shop where they were working on a jet ski with a shot crank bearing, it was a 3 cylinder Yamaha 2-stroke with 3 carbuerettors with absolutly MASSIVE throats!!! Also whats the go with your youtube channel, as I went to go watch a video of the colonel the other day and apparantly the videos dont exist🙁

Anyway all the best with your job search and the bug👍

Ryan

colonel mustard ·

Hey Ryan.

It's a kawasaki - 2 stroke 1100cc 3 cylinder, carbie'd - 3 seater.
The issue with it was that where the shaft from the engine to the prop went through the hull it was leaking in many places, allowing alot of water in and choking the engine. So we had to pull the engine and everthing else out, clean it, get some parts and put it all back together - then actually get to run it properly for the first time. That's a ling story short anyways. It has heaps of guts. Can pull 2
tubes (with adults) and 2 adults on the jetski itself - In the Brisbane river, with 20 other boats around.

YouTube videos - I took them down cause I thought they were pretty ordinary really.

The lack of updates is mainly just becuase of the lack for money and finding it stupidly hard to find jobs in Brisbane - but have to money to set myself up away from home/and a very unreliable way of getting anyway over half an hour away.

Scarab ·

Lovin' your new signature pic bro!! 👍👍

Paul

colonel mustard ·

Yeah. Had a few spare minutes today to get a new pic, between making pancakes for highschool kids and raising
money for Timor kids.

In other news, I'm totally having debates with people, here there and everywhere, about
alternatives to building a 1915... Fun.

Scarab ·

mmmm....pancakes **drool, drool** 👍

Paul

colonel mustard ·

Come to Brisbane and I'll make you some... Cost you $2... Comes with icecream..

Anyway, what's going on with your project (s) Paul ??? - feel free to pm me if you want, anytime man 🙂

Scarab ·

My project has hit the same financial wall as yours at the moment bro.....but slow and steady wins the race eh?? 😁

As for the tempting pancake offer....I think you'll find it might end up costing me more than $2!!...and Brissy is a long way to go for a pancake!!

All the best mate....and keep your eyes peeled for a PM in the future 👍

Paul

colonel mustard ·

Paul. my eyes are always peeled.

went for a ride in Joels 1303 on sunday.... Im now more wanting to get my suspension and braking 100%... because his car was just awesome... and i cant wait for mine to handle that way! 🙂

Scarab ·

Sounds good mate....there's nothing quite like going for a ride in someone else project to get you motivated on your own!

Scarab (aka: Paul)

Ollie ·

Hey Mustard, any news to report? Are you running the 1600 or something diff?

i know the feeling well
its taken nearly 10 years of trying different combos to get it to ride and stop like that

colonel mustard ·

OMClarke wrote:Hey Mustard, any news to report? Are you running the 1600 or something diff?
still running the 1600 indeed. will be for a while... it will be celebrating when i put the dcnf and thunderbird on... but, still a few months off that...

any news to report...? yes. Today I got my momo on. totally ruins the speedo... but it feels much better than the stock wheel. 🙂

colonel mustard ·

Joel wrote:its taken nearly 10 years of trying different combos to get it to ride and stop like that
years of other people learning, and i know exactly what i want... just have no cash to do it... for ages I thought that there was no way i would buy the sherman rear disc kit... sunday changed my mind really fast.

colonel mustard ·

Ola!

Hey Paul, my eyes are hurting from being peeled... :P

current update - have ordered a sway bar and camber and caster ajdusting bushes from topline. Still need to order tapered springs from them

other things on the to-buy list are: Sherman strut brace, front and rear service parts

other updates can be found in my vforce wheel thread 🙂

Scarab ·

Sorry mate....to ease the pain of peeled eyes, try blinking every now and again 😂

Will definitely drop you a PM sometime soon, but in the meantime, its good to hear you are still moving forward on the Colonel mate, well done!

I just noticed your last post is shown as 5.07 AM.....what on earth are you doing out of bed at that time of day??

I didnt actually realise there was two 5.07's in the day, I think Ive only ever seen the PM version!! 😂

Dont forget, onward an upward mate,

Paul

colonel mustard ·

Well, I got a new job, and the guy I work with likes early starts. So it's meet at 5am. He was late this morning so I got paid to AVD on my iPhone in the carpark. 🙂

Scarab ·

What are you doing for your new job mate?

Im not real keen for early starts myself....you would have been sitting there for a while if I was your boss!! 😂

14000 and 1.........shopping trollies to fix 😂

Good to see you're on the way again. One piece at a time hey

colonel mustard ·

Yep. Wheels next.... Or maybe something else, but that's a surprise that will be revealed slowly over time...

It's way to early, but iphoning in the carpark waiting for the other guy again.

Scarab ·

when you say wheels next....is that for Colonel, or for the shopping trolleys???? Coz we all know how most shopping trolleys need their wheels replaced!!!!😂😂😂

mmmm....I like suprises!....now its me who will have their eyes peeled, waiting for the reveal! 😁

Paul

DaveCarter ·

mmmmm isnt wheel shopping fun. Doing it atm for the fully sik 31

colonel mustard ·

Where the heck did you pop up from.....
good to see you on here 🙂

yes, wheel shopping is great, finding it difficult, even though i know exactly what i want/need.

fun.

Sides ·

So you've got all the "must-do" stuff done on the car now eh Mustard ???

If so then hey - nice goin dude !!!

colonel mustard ·

Hey sides,

can't say i do actually. I have all the brake stuff ready to go - but .........

all my tie rod ends and both ball joints are shot, im getting some serious clunky noises happening....

but my reasoning is this (and some may say its stupid, and it probs is) - I want to get it lowered, so im buying all the parts (lowering appropriate) from topline, and getting the flip it kit machined into some hubs (dave olsen/DB) getting narrow springs and getting new wheels and tires (buckled steelies dont balance well, and 12 psi isn't great every 2 weeks) so its all done in one hit. I was going to be getting my front brakes done by a certain mechanic (who we both know) - yet i dont think he agree's with me lowering the car, so im waiting to get all the stuff i need, then maybe suggesting having a working bee with pizza as a reward 🙂

Sides ·

Yeah, OK - fair enuff - it's good you have a plan !!!

The front stuff I have no idea on since I've never worked on a super or L, but let us know when it comes to rear end lowering time... done that job more than few times (and yes, it can be a right pain just like everyone says)

btw - you can do all your mods and lowering and still keep the stock wheels, at least for a start... might make the $$$ and timing aspects a bit easier to manage....

👍

colonel mustard ·

have ordered a lower swaybar from topline... need to get their tapereed springs to go with my new adjustable struts. noticed their rebuild kits are mega expensive so will be emailing people to try and get some parts - any suggestions (bushes/balljoint/tie rod ends) - have some ideas on upgrading tie rods depending on price too....

and yes, wheels are the least important part. Rear lowering hopefully at the same time - same weekend. just have to find a time when a few people can give me a hand on a weekend. 🙂

STIDUB ·

mustard, the topline order wont be heppening till end of march at the earliest, hes out of stock currently. 😬

colonel mustard ·

well... that puts spanners in stuff... or so the saying goes.

Sides ·

Heh heh - STIDUB the parts pimp eh ???

😂

colonel mustard ·

yep... hubs, swaybar (wait, arent you his parts buddy?) potentially tie rods....

Sides ·

Heh, well - he's gotten some stuff from me (rear sway), but so far I've only gotten talk and the odd photo back from him !!!

AND he keeps trying to sting me for a spin in Jezebel... sheesh...

😏

colonel mustard ·

"I'm interested in a uh... Rollcage..."

I have heard he may be getting you some other stuff.... 🙂 I still haven't seen your car in the flesh sides, so hopefully at cotton soon.

STIDUB ·

yeah thats me, parts whore, provided its easy im keen 😂

colonel mustard ·

Nothing is easy, as the past week has proved. Now I have the cash; parts
are hard to get. Let me know when your doing the hub stuff Dave, I have cash foryou. Also, vdubengeneerijg, have a quote yet?? I'm interested 🙂

Scarab ·

G'day mate, hows things going? Guess you are working flat out and no time to work on the Colonel.

Hope all is going well for you bro!

All the best,

Paul

colonel mustard ·

Parts collecting is going very slow.....

other interests are also grabbing my money. oh fun.

a mate got a free prelude, and i asked for the seats... and when he found out why, he wanted them for his bug... so fail there. even though they wont suit. but anyway. there are the same as mr dave carters. (mate, if you see this, send me a text, I'v lost your number......)

colonel mustard ·

So a certain forum member gave me a good talking to on saturday arvo... and iv been told to pull my finder out and make this thing safe.... so a bit of other stuff is on hold, and its time get moving!

colonel mustard ·

Canadian tie rods from vdub engineering arrived yesterday arvo. Dave dropped these to me last night!

Took some pics of my set this morning. 🙂 Cheers Dave!

They are painted in grey hammertone. quite heavy for a tie rod!

colonel mustard ·

Some other stuff thats happening.

got my flip it kit in (spare hubs from stidub) and the hubs painted.

More pics of how the machining was done will come soon.

discs ready to go

painted calipers.

Next to come is the swaybar, bushes and tierodends. fun.

Scarab ·

nice work mate! glad to see you are moving forward! congrats!!

Paul

Mick058 ·

been almost 10 days - whats going on?

colonel mustard ·

well... the job I was doing ended.... so that didnt help..

tie rod ends and balll joints, and it will be go time..

STIDUB ·

wheres the pics of the greased/bearing'd hubs with discs on it that some guy with a shed with almost everything did for ya???

hey mick, you going to nationals?

colonel mustard ·

THose photos would be on my iphone... not sure if i can get them on here...

Scarab ·

hey mate....whats the go....you dropped off facebook????

Paul

colonel mustard ·

Hey Paul.

You would be correct in saying that.

I guess I really didn't like it still... Not to worry. I will check in from time to time... just for some important stuff... 🙂

Scarab ·

Hahaha....no worries, just noticed you weren't there...

Guess we can always catch up on here 😁

Paul

colonel mustard ·

My email is jasonaniolkowski@gmail.com feel free 🙂

colonel mustard ·

So.... no email from you paul.... :P FB would i be on again....

I have located some control arms that im going to clean up and get bushes for. its slow goings again though.

t_tuffnut ·

Hey colonel,

Just email the pics from your iphone to yourself, then download them on a PC/MAC.

My brother does it all the time. He sent me through a video using the same method yesterday.

Gotta get me an iphone.

colonel mustard ·

Hmm. good point. i shall do that.

no iphone will be better... should be released.. sooon...

colonel mustard ·

Just realised i havent posted pics of my hubs with rotors and discs together up yet....

I will try and find them after work tonight and throw them up. I have the pull the calipers off again to fit some anti squeal parts and correct caliper bolts, and paint the non contact part of the disc silver. So there will be photos tonight and maybe tomorrow night.

In more recent news, i snapped another clutch cable, so we may have some other progress towards the end of the week. could be interesting.

colonel mustard ·

So.... its been update time for a while, iv just been slack... whoops.

Parts from mick motors!

Parts from STIDUB (he purchased them for xena, but isnt using them, as he is going hydrualic clutch and awesome custom mounts!) Cheers again mate, enjoy yours swapsies...

And here are the tie rods with ends fitted. the tie rods are from canada - (from lanner, and me/dave will make a tread about the product once i have some better photos, and some of them installed in his car/my car and the third secret owner, if he wants......)

I used never cease (which is like a metalic compound??) to make sure they were easy to adjust/remove.

better Pics of the hubs semi assembled a bit later [yes i know they are in the bottom of the box} & (capped internet means it takes ages to upload pics to photobucket!)

Camo ·

Always good feeling when new parts arrive, always puts me on a high. I hope your engine is out or is planed to come out to fit those rear gearbox mounts.

Kev

colonel mustard ·

Hey Kev,

Engine will be coming out after i get back from a camp week after next, sadly im not driving it at the moment cause the clutch cable is broken...

Its coming out to do the mounts, gearbox shaft seal, (and clean the gearbox, its been coated in crud since the reverse switch crapped out and leaked stuff everywhere) clutch kit (all new stuff thats been sitting on my shelf for over a year), new rear main, and a long over due tune up - tappets, new ace aircooled oil that mick won at warwick and gave to me, (cause he had a subaru... 😁) spark plugs, fun stuff.

colonel mustard ·

some other progress pics....

Caliper on

the disc painted for "anti rust..."

the other night i installed the clips from sides, wire burshed the caliper bolts, and used loctite to hold them in... and torqued to 29 ft/lb.
- i will try and put up some photos of that later in the week... or after i go to dave's next time. 🙂

other stuff...

front r/h side.... I have to get a bumper before i change it over.

and.... this is going to look different in the next few weeks...

colonel mustard ·

I may be painting a sway bar today.....

Yesterday Mr dave butler pressed some bushings out of my new controll arms... i tried doing it without a press and failed badly, so thats DB.

I'm going on a camp next week so progress is put on hold! I need more sandpaper and paint when i get back... I'm pretty much just reco'ing stuff and rust proofing along the way. trying to make it nicer to work on..

vassy66T1 ·

Good work Colonel.
Keep it up 👍

Mick058 ·

looking good mate!

colonel mustard ·

Got the new clutch cable in. and the brake pedal actually sits where it is supposed to now! WOOOOO

As stidub is going on a road trip... brakes arent happening this weekend coming, but i may be able to convince him to do them next weekend. 🙂 Just waitning on a few bits from dave butler, and eccentric bolts. 🙂

hellbugged ·

cool......if it was easy to build a hot rod, everyone would have em.........just keep plugging away

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Hows it going colonel i am missing the weekly updates.

colonel mustard ·

Ah, thanks for the bump Josh, I was going to bump this up today, but forgot about it. many updates, yet very few photo's as all the stuff is at dave's place in the cave, sitting waiting to get going. Fingers crossed that brakes will be done this saturday... I hope.

Other updates include,

- Got a berg shifter (and i hear that stidub is going to be writing an article about how you can change a car so much with a berg shirter)
- colonel leaks again, need to buy new gaffa! we had a crazy load of rain here on tuesday night. I drove to ice skating and was lean steering. freaky!
- many more fun things to come!

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Sounds good id love to see it in the flesh one day. You should bring it to the nationals or something

colonel mustard ·

maybe in a few years. thats a bit far for it to drive currently.

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

Wat bout warick? will it be there this year?

colonel mustard ·

I am aiming to go up to warwick for at least one day, in a convoy with a few friends 🙂

if all goes to plan, warwick could be the first event i take it to 🙂 you coming up for warwick?

71-BEETLE-SEDAN ·

im thinking about it see how school is going with exams and stuff

DieSchnelleKafer ·

off topic, but how do u make these photo's? i have seen them all over this forum

cheers

Boss Lady ·

www.busselecta.com theres one for most vws there, aircooled at least👍

colonel mustard ·

Thanks boss lady 🙂

Ollie ·

Hey Mustard, sorry if it's posted up - couldn't see it - where did you get your drilled rotors 🙂?

colonel mustard ·

They came from John Sherman. and he can do them in any pattern. about... $100 each disc... plus, $75 for drilling (per pair) or slotting. 🙂

I'll let you know if I am happy with them, once i get them on the car!

Ollie ·

Thanks mate that would be great!

colonel mustard ·

Ok... so... its going to take me hours to get photo's up...

but. major service done, engine running like a treat.

New exhaust in. yeah, thats right... FINALLY. its in. Sadly the paint didnt hold up in all area's... so i will have to do something about that.

Berg adjusted... but still not right. so, word on the street is, for it to work correctly... I need new gearbox mounts (I have them, just not the time and effort to get them in, will have to though & the clutch at the same time!), and a coupler bushing and rod bushing. woooooooo

photos to come.

colonel mustard ·

and by photos to come, i most likely do not mean today. as my internet has been capped.

hellbugged ·

how do you mean "not right"?

colonel mustard ·

it sometimes wants to get reverse gearing back down from 3rd, which is bad on corners and stopping...

also, first isnt top left... its slightly aside....???

matberry ·

Mmmmm.....heard those symptoms once or twice. 😂

colonel mustard ·

yeah.. well box mounts are stuffed...

matberry ·

Do the shift rod bush first.

hellbugged ·

matberry wrote:Do the shift rod bush first.
X2

STIDUB ·

...or just do the whole lot at once 👍

hellbugged ·

well one job has to be done first as apart from the locating grub on the nose cone, they are seperate jobs 😁.........do the bush's first, note the difference.........the engine mounts would have be $^!* to give described symptoms.........so you do the shift rod and i'll bet it's like a different car.

you do the bush that doesnt require gearbox removal, then do the engine mounts, dare i say, just in case..........

boo moo hoo ha ha haaaaaaaaaaa 😉

sure you got the shift plate right way round, not up side down...etc etc

if nothing else it will arm musturd with some more knowledge on what symptoms are tell tale of...

A........stuffed shift bush
B.......stuffed engine mounts

it's like self education as you go

just keep eating

matberry ·

The other reason apart from Daimo's excellent description above, is why replace a part with an inferior one if it's not f#%^! . Most replacement parts aren't as good as the older genuine ones your trying to replace. Sure the coupling might be bad, inspect it, check for play and softness of the rubbers, if ok, leave it, not to mention, the coupling will be removed when doing the bush anyway. As for engine mounts giving those symptoms.....😂😂

colonel mustard ·

well. how about the mounts making the car shudder, going down a hill...? Ie, driving down a hill, foot off throttle in 2nd/3rd... ??? Thoughts?

matberry ·

colonel mustard wrote:well. how about the mounts making the car shudder, going down a hill...? Ie, driving down a hill, foot off throttle in 2nd/3rd... ??? Thoughts?
More info please Colonel Sanders (ps. any chance of sending me a PM with the 13 herbs and spices recipe) .

Joel ·

a quick spy shot of colonels new altitude adjustment 😎

STIDUB ·

lol that was before it settled, damn you & your low standards joel, it tucks wheel now, gotta play with it again asap, cheers for the pic tho, i dont have any either, other than when he left around midnight, ooooh so quietly haha

oh, and that garage suuuuurrreee looks familiar 👍

colonel mustard ·

I tried to leave as quietly as possible. Pretty sure some ippy folk heard me though. sounds great on the highway at 110... 🙂 need a 5th gear!!!!

it sure does tuck wheel. 🙂

STIDUB ·

ok, so fine tuning night went longer than planned, but now the front end handles like its on rails, the rear on the other hand... thats like jelly 😂
a lil playing with camber & toe & the new bolts from topline have made a world of difference, kinda jealous yours moves now, though, your out of credit in garage hrs now haha, my bugs turn again👍

...after the clean up from the last few days,

enjoy the twisties, ....less tyre scrub 👍

as for anyone else with a super, GET NEW ball joints, tie rods/ends anr urethane everything! NOW! (you wont regret it at all) ...unless your a pansy😘

colonel mustard ·

Got home at about 1:30...... drives nicely at 120 now. 🙂

Anyone have suggestions for new brakes that squeal at a slow stop?? thinking im getting the dremel out and making some chamfered edges!

Oh.... I'm out of Garage hours with so much more to do!!! (looks like i will be there more often, garage/ cave tidys + getting a certain car ready for action day, etc!)

Next stop... Rear end stuff... 😀 Its gonna be fun!!! Hopefully it can go smoother than the front end.

again... id post photos... But bad internet till the first of the month apparently

The whole of that side of Ippy loves it when I leave... Dave says I sound like a diesel.... But louder... I did get home at a silly hour though.

DARN YOU JOEL!!!! IT WAS MEANT TO BE EASYYYYYYYY. you and you car giving me bad bad bad ideas!

I'm sure if i ever have to do what we did to those springs last night again, Im just gonna call vforce! ❗

colonel mustard ·

ryana89 ·

Hurry up and spam the pictures please😂
Theres so much anticipation.....

STIDUB ·

ask and ye shall recieve, no pics of the rear shocks in but this should do ya, camber helps it handle alot, fatter rubber would help but ah well, will have to wait for mustard's net to speed up again before you get more but here u go...

Joel ·

No wonder I could hear you swearing from here...

It takes 5 mins to unbolt them from the car, and bout 2 mins to compress them on the bench (make that 10.2 secs with a rattle gun 😂)

I tried once compressing the springs in the car, never did that again

matberry ·

🤓

😵‍💫

colonel mustard ·

Well Now that I have finally had a chance to sit down and do a semi long reply. here goes.

Tips for doing stuff like replacing your whole front end. Spray everything that you're removing with penetrene or crc or something like that. Surface rust and tight bolts are reallly annoying and difficult to remove. We espcially had issues with the tie rods and the center rod just not wanting to come out.

Adjust your struts before you put them in the car, if they are the ring clip type. And dont expect for everything to go right the first time (thats not a surprise to anyone is it?)

so. what else...

The Tie Rods are fantastic. 200 times easier to adjust than stock. smoother to adjust, and nice to be able to get 2 spanners on there like a modern car. 🙂
The only tip I have about tie rod ends, is try your hardest to get the ones will allen key holes in the top. it makes it so much easier, and It would have helped heaps If I had them on mine - (was so much easier on daves...)

the discs are good, I think. Having really large pad squeal issues that I need to resolve asap. I feel that maybe the pads are just too hard, or need the sharp edges gone... Will Keep you informed. Otherwise. Happy with the discs. I actually have a solid pedal again, (better than when I got the car 2 years ago) and it stops nearly as well as your beetle Joel (better than my rents commodore.. by a long way) so once the squealing is gone, and i adjust the drums again (needs to have the hoses done and a bleed) I will be a super happy chappy about my brakes.

What else....
Dave Butler makes the best camber adjusting bushes out there, and I am very thankful for them. Cheers a bunch DB, very much appreicated. Also, (as you may have seen a few pages back) DB drilled the hugs and pressed in the bush for flipping the tie rods on a super (a topline prduct) - worth it, do it, works a treat. Cheers DB.

Speaking of topline. We tried using the original camber bolts cause the topline ones had not arrived yet. (the originals were stuffed!!! badly. couldnt even really use them to adjust the camber.... the job they are meant to do....) So, I must say the Topline ones are worth every cent. went in no probs. didnt do anything stupid that bolts sometimes do. perfect. Another great topline product. very happy.

Ummm....
To clarify, For quite a while I thought I had a master issue. I don't. I feel it was a combo of inccorectly installed pedals, post clutch cable replacement (not the recent time, the time before, the recent time contributed to fixing it) and flogged calipers. Many thanks to Joel for the calipers. they dont make the ticking noise of death... they work. 🙂 thanks!

Also, Yesterday Arvo I got new rear shocks put in. Many thanks to Dave Sides for a great deal on those, they are fantastic, ever if it did raise my rear over an inch. :P Very happy that it feels better over bumps and stuff. Now i just need to get the torsions, bushes and bump stops changed over. I fear the current torsions are sagged... not so good.

Yes, I do have many more things (in my posession) to happen to colonel in the next few weeks/months. 🙂

And Lastly, But defs not leastly, A HUGEEEEEEEEEEEEE thankyou to STIDUB (dave) [toomanydavesssss] for his hard work, garage and food. 🙂 thanks dude. 🙂

Ah. and yes, even though I got a great deal on the struts from Joel, As I dont really want to have skinny wheels forever, I don't plan on changing the height again.

I do hope someone just gives me a $1800 gift voucher for Vforce... :P

STIDUB ·

thought about it, but couldnt be arsed taking the bottom bolts out again, could only get a normal ring spanner into 3 of the 6 for some reason, it was great fun though yeah 😬
i think i need ot buy another air compressor, supershit one died when i tried to be nice & change oil etc, big sucker from trade tools will replace it id say.
Joel wrote:No wonder I could hear you swearing from here...

It takes 5 mins to unbolt them from the car, and bout 2 mins to compress them on the bench (make that 10.2 secs with a rattle gun 😂)

I tried once compressing the springs in the car, never did that again
and mustard, no probs, theres paint flakes & oil drops on my floor though! not to mention the grease & brake fluid on the carpet 😂 (dont panic boss lady wont kill anyone, its offcut from old stuff, great for laying on instead of cold concrete, shoudl probably go get my creeper hey?

colonel mustard ·

Yes, You should go get the creeper and the items that are on it... and the items on the table, and the table for the cave so we can get moving. I feel like im going to be there quite a few times in the next 3 weeks, pulling some crazy hours.

as for the concrete... that green acid fixes everything.

Gone to the dry garage of Zane at Coomera.

She's already being pampered. Got the gearbox mount out, went to Roger at southside vw and got some good advice. the mount was fine, but it was the metal cup around it that roger rekons is the culprit. it wasn't fitting firmly around the mount, and thus when it flexes you get that whack/knock. Solution, squish it together with a bench vise so there is no room for play 🙂. was good fun removing (bruises to show haha). Bought vw rubber torsion bar bushes, might lower the rear end a spine whilst getting into it.

Tomorrow, we will be refitting the gearbox mount and will pop out the rear quarter window for zane to tackle that rust while i do the shifter bush and maybe a spot of welding on the front of the chassis and pan to fill in that rust after a good poke and wire wheel.

Bloody Zane got the clutch play perfect first time without stalling! i gotta adjust that. so much different compared to the jacked up baja. drifts very nicely too 🙂

Engine mounts were shagged completely and thus were the culprit for the shudders and thumps. One was split in two. Both have been replaced after e engine was removed, and the front gearbox mount was done anyways. Shifter bush was busted, sitting in the bottom of the tunnel, that has been replaced. A paper element air cleaner has been fitted as after cleaning the foam filter we could see through the foam across the street. Breather filter has been cleaned. A quick shifter kit below the stock shifter has been fitted. New tail light lenses as well.

All in all, we both took it for a test drive, and the shifting is now superb and no more flunks or shudders. Yay! Hasn't hurt the budget much yet either. 22 bums per engine mount. The rear quarter window has been popped out and the rust has been removed and treated. Debating whether to weld or glass over. To be determined. The door rust has been removed and filled and primed. It's awaiting top coat when the humidity drops.

Thats it for the moment. The kangaroo hopping needs addressing, but the tune up for the engine will come soon and will hopefully sort it. New plugs, oil and Lucas stabilizer additive awaits. Clutch wing nut needs to be further tightened. Other than that, not far from rwc 🙂. Of course electronics await.
